Edition #93

August 21, 2026

The NCAA has inked a sponsorship sales agreement to have Playfly Sports work alongside the association in driving local commercial revenue, while developing innovative ways to package, market and activate assets that do not conflict with current NCAA corporate partnerships. NCAA President Charlie Baker: “Playfly’s network of resources and relationships will provide benefits that could positively impact every school across our organization, provide added visibility to NCAA programs, and make us better and stronger amid the evolving landscape of college athletics.” (link)

Are your aggressive premium pricing strategies maximizing growth, or are they quietly destroying the stadium atmosphere that built your brand?

That’s the core question framing the newest CRO.ticker. Here are three additional insights from today’s edition:

The Cost of Financialization: As private equity transforms sports franchises into highly leveraged financial instruments, aggressive premium pricing and luxury expansions threaten to alienate the mass-market fans required to sustain the vibrant stadium atmosphere that attracts premium buyers in the first place.

The End of Static Signage: Technology brands are abandoning traditional stadium billboards in favor of live product integrations, using massive sporting events as functional showrooms to demonstrate enterprise capabilities like AI and cloud computing in real-time.

Monetizing the Data Ecosystem: From university-driven alumni loyalty programs to conversational AI platforms, athletic departments are aggressively building closed-loop data ecosystems to track fan spending and sell hyper-targeted, a la carte micro-experiences.

Scroll down for the NHL's strategic global expansion with Bayern Munich, the WNBA Cleveland Sirens' eight-figure founding sponsorships, the Cincinnati Reds' AI-powered concession overhaul, and MLB's manufactured speakeasy scarcity.

THE SOPHISTICATION OF SPORTS

Huddle Up publisher Joe Pompliano breaks down the transition of sports franchises from vanity assets into sophisticated financial instruments engineered by private equity and sovereign wealth funds to maximize leverage, tax benefits, and price appreciation. Pompliano notes how this “financialization” extends to daily operations and venue development, citing the Los Angeles Dodgers leveraging Shohei Ohtani's $700M deferred contract to generate $200M in immediate revenue while only paying $4M in out-of-pocket cash before escrow requirements activate. “Some will say that the financialization of sports is just a natural next step. Teams get more expensive → more sophisticated owners come in → terms change. But what people don’t realize is that this mindset impacts everything. For example, why sell tickets at a set price when you can use dynamic pricing? Why pay for a stadium out of pocket when taxpayers will fund half of it, with the remaining money secured through sponsorships, PSLs, luxury suite sales, and naming-rights deals before the venue even opens? And perhaps most importantly, why would you buy a team with cash when institutional investors will just pick up the tab?” (link)

More Private Equity Chronicles (in a previously non-PE industry): Private equity firm Charlesbank – former owner of Varsity Brands and The Princeton Review – is in advanced negotiations to acquire a stake in the Los Angeles-based law firm WSHB in a $700M transaction that bypasses historical professional ethics rules by utilizing a "management services organisation" (MSO) model, according to the Financial Times' Stephen Foley. The novel financing approach splits the firm into two entities—an attorney-owned group for legal advice and a private equity-backed MSO that handles back-office operations in exchange for lucrative fees—allowing the $24B-in-assets group to expand its professional services portfolio beyond its prior acquisition of the accounting firm Aprio. Valued at a multiple of WSHB's projected $46M in 2026 earnings, the capital influx will allow the 550-lawyer firm to scale its defense capabilities across 43 offices to combat the rising wave of litigation funded by rival private capital. Pointing out that legacy firms like Quinn Emanuel and Paul Weiss have recently explored similar private equity setups, Foley noted the concept remains largely untested against state regulations: "Rules against non-lawyer ownership are designed to ensure that commercial considerations do not taint advice to clients." Penn State is collaborating with Uptop to launch the “Penn State Rewards” program in an effort to make better use of its 800K-plus living alumni base for its commercial aims, per SBJ’s Bret McCormick. Fans who spend money at PSU athletics facilities or through department sponsors like Dunkin’, Onvo, Giant, Jersey Mike’s and Utz will receive rewards points. As a result, the sponsors benefit from higher spending in their stores, while Penn State expects to achieve higher per-capita spending on concessions and merchandise at its sports venues. Additionally, Penn State is working with WMT to build an integrated repository to handle the influx of collecting Nittany Lion fans’ daily spending data through the card-linked offers program, which can then be used to deliver personalized offers to those same fans or to source new sponsorships. Accrued points can be redeemed for merchandise, memorabilia, tickets and other Penn State experiences, while students can utilize their points to improve their standing in student ticket lotteries. Playfly Sports’ Penn State Sports Enterprises helped arrange the pairing with Uptop, which is becoming an athletics sponsor as part of the program, as well as bring other existing PSU sponsors into the rewards program’s card-linked offers roster. Minnesota launches Minnesota Memories, an initiative allowing fans to purchase pre-game, in-game and postgame experiences all the way up through gameday, including post-event photographs, video board messages, seat upgrades, on-field opportunities and more. In all, there are more than 25 experiences and 900 opportunities to choose from around every home football match-up. Volleyball experiences for sale will follow shortly, while those for men’s & women’s basketball and men’s & women’s ice hockey will be announced at a later date. (link)

Data platform Equipe is rolling out a new conversational chat tool, Equipe AI, allowing users the opportunity to ask questions, create reports, and develop visualizations with a data set formed completely from the school’s own information. Per SBJ’s Ethan Joyce, the company, which currently works with athletic departments at Texas, Iowa and South Carolina, with more schools in their funnel as the start of the college football season approaches, has raised $1.5M so far and is backed by Game Changers Ventures. Equipe CTO Sajan Gutta: “The reason we built Equipe was we feel that [providing dashboards] is not enough for a team to get out of their data. In our view, the purpose of doing something about your customer data is not visualizations and feeling like you’ve got infrastructure; it’s to actually go and use it to drive revenue.” (link)

UNIQUE & UNQUESTIONABLE UPSIDE

The NHL and Bayern Munich have established a first-of-its-kind, multiyear strategic partnership to collaborate on co-branding, merchandise, and content creation as the hockey league accelerates its commercial expansion into Germany. Here’s what matters…

The Athletic’s Chris Johnston points out the novel alliance between a North American professional sports league and a European club pairs the NHL's ambitions to penetrate an 84M-person market with Bayern's massive global reach, as evidenced by the club's 45.2M Instagram followers compared to the league's 7.3M.

As part of the push, the NHL announced four additional regular-season games in Germany for the 2027-28 season, sending the Boston Bruins to Munich and the Edmonton Oilers to Cologne following a previously scheduled December 2026 matchup between the Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators in Düsseldorf.

Pointing to the vast disparity in global audience scale, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly explains why the league opted to align with a foreign soccer behemoth rather than attempting to navigate the international market alone: "We both have established fanbases; we both have established business partners. We want to collaborate and share information with respect to those business partners, and find ways to collaborate and move the business forward. Bayern is a world-class brand. It is known worldwide. It’s iconic. It’s unmatched in its credibility and its authenticity in terms of how it creates its fans. We want to learn from that." (link)

Tech brands are shifting sponsorship strategies from traditional signage toward native product demonstrations in live athletic environments to showcase enterprise capabilities to prospective clients, according to JohnWallStreet. Lenovo deployed 25,000 devices and 350 engineers across 600 sites during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, generating over 20B impressions on its AI-stabilized Referee View broadcast feed alone, while Microsoft expanded its NFL partnership by placing 2,500 MS Copilot+ PCs across 32 clubs alongside Azure AI scouting tools. Similar activations include Owl AI partnering with Google Cloud at X Games Aspen and launching an AI officiating system with Major League Pickleball, aligning with an industry trend where forward-deployed engineering job postings grew 800%, Salesforce committed to hiring 1,000 engineers, and OpenAI capitalized a $4B+ deployment company. Owl AI CEO Jay Prasad emphasized that technology partners now prioritize functional integrations over static visibility: "Technology brands don’t want to just be there and have a presence, whether it’s signage or hospitality, they [increasingly] want to impact the sport. We would rather see deeper partnerships that have bigger canvases in which we can create [solutions] than just doing straight activation." (link)

SBJ’s Rachel Axon reports the WNBA's newly minted expansion squad Cleveland Sirens are aggressively capitalizing on expansion momentum having secured three founding sponsorships with Progressive, KeyBank, and the Cleveland Clinic that will collectively generate eight figures annually. Under the direction of Sirens President and Rock Entertainment Group EVP Allison Howard, the franchise utilized an immersive 45-minute presentation—including a mock draft and 200-employee cheer tunnel for Progressive CMO Mari Pumarejo—to secure Progressive for both the chest and abdomen uniform patches. Chelsea FC Women have agreed to a new partnership with Fertility Plus as the club’s Official Fertility Partner. This partnership includes a first-of-its-kind fund available to every women’s team player that will provide bespoke fertility support, including assessments, treatments, counselling and workshops through Fertility Plus. The W Profile: Raquel Ferreira
Executive Vice President and Assistant General Manager, Boston Red Sox

As the Executive Vice President and Assistant General Manager for the Boston Red Sox, Raquel Ferreira is one of the highest-ranking women in the history of baseball operations. Her leadership is defined by an unparalleled mastery of institutional knowledge, a deep commitment to the human element of player development in an increasingly algorithmic sport, and a quiet, undeniable competence that has made her an indispensable asset to six different heads of baseball operations and four World Series championship teams..

THERE’S A LOT OF MONEY TO BE MADE

The USTA is capitalizing on surging live-event demand by executing an $800M renovation of Arthur Ashe Stadium that dramatically expands premium hospitality inventory and drives up overall attendance costs, The Athletic's Matthew Futterman reports. The reconfiguration removed 3,500 middle-tier loge seats—previously averaging $291 per session—and replaced them with 5,000 lower-level courtside seats, including 2,000 club seats. This move effectively doubled the revenue potential of those locations, as standard courtside seats average $560 per session while those with hospitality access exceed $2,300. National Tennis Center COO Daniel Zausner acknowledged the new luxury clubs—which displaced legacy player locker rooms into a new $250M training facility—are necessary to fund the broader operation: "There’s no question that there’s a lot of money to be made from the courtside seats and the suites to help fund everything else that we’re doing." (link)

Talking Tickets publisher Dave Wakeman warns that athletic departments and professional franchises are jeopardizing long-term brand equity by prioritizing short-term revenue over authentic fan engagement, pointing to a 2025 UCLA football game where the announced attendance of 27,143 masked a turnstile scan of just 12,383. To properly diagnose fan loyalty, Wakeman introduced the "Real Attendance Score"—calculated by multiplying the sell-through rate by the turnstile scan rate and subtracting comps—noting a peer-reviewed study of 48 Division I men's basketball programs revealed an average no-show rate of 37%. Wakeman contends that aggressively raising prices—highlighting the Lakers' recent 14% to 45.9% ticket hikes—alienates the mass audience that actually generates the vibrant stadium atmosphere necessary to attract both premium buyers and broadcast partners. Wakeman: "When a fan feels like an ATM, you lose the fan... maybe not all at once, but slowly they begin to care a little less. When you lose the fan, you start losing the mass. When you lose the mass, the atmosphere dies. When the atmosphere dies, premium customers start leaving too." (link)

The Cincinnati Reds and Delaware North Sportservice executed a highly profitable concession conversion at Great American Ball Park, ripping out underperforming belly-up stands and replacing them with open-concept marketplaces featuring 32 Micros Simphony self-checkout units. Utilizing predictive analytics powered by Databricks, Delaware North Head of Analytics Rishav Dash and General Manager Andy Worden identified specific stadium bottlenecks and installed high-speed exhibition cooking equipment—such as pizza ovens capable of producing six pies simultaneously—to eliminate warming lamps and accelerate service. SBJ’s Bret McCormick notes the change dramatically improved throughput, reducing average transaction times from 90 seconds to 38 seconds while generating a 25% jump in per-capita spending, a 30% increase in total transactions, and a 40% boost in overall revenue at the targeted first-base stand. The real-time heat mapping software currently delivers forecasting accuracy between 95% and 99%, drastically reducing food waste while propelling the venue into the top half of MLB's Voice of the Consumer concessions rankings. (link)

Major League Baseball clubs are increasingly utilizing hidden speakeasy concepts to drive premium hospitality engagement and redefine the in-stadium experience, Yahoo Sports' Shlomo Sprung observes. The Los Angeles Dodgers, for instance, integrated Tommy's Bar into a $100M center-field renovation, offering access via a rewards system while renting the space for $7,500 on non-gamedays. The Seattle Mariners partnered with Sodexo Live District Manager Megan Murray to build the "Sea-cret Door" at T-Mobile Park, and Sprung notes the team intentionally throttles supply by opening the door for only 30 of 81 home games to sell $20 to $30 themed cocktails, a strategy VP of Fan Experience Malcolm Rogel noted builds long-term equity over immediate profits: "We talk about return on experience and designing this first around the guest experience and later about the economics. So much of this goes toward your brand and the perception of what it's like to go to a Mariners game, and this plays more to our brand than just maximizing revenue." More. (link)

Dick's Sporting Goods is expanding its footprint in the sports trading card market by deploying buyers to events like the National Sports Collectors Convention to curate individual card assortments for new Collectors Clubhouse spaces within its expansive House of Sport locations, according to The Athletic's Larry Holder. The pivot from solely selling sealed retail boxes to operating a hobby-shop model aims to capitalize on a lucrative sector that recently generated $1B in annual revenue for competitor Target. While Dick's CFO Navdeep Gupta acknowledged the collectibles space carries a lower gross margin, President and CEO Lauren Hobart emphasized the category generates incremental gross margin dollars by increasing store visit frequency and attracting a younger demographic. “The collectibles business, the trading card business, are such exciting, incremental opportunities. So while they do have a lower margin than our overall mix, I think thinking of them as pressure or any sort of negative thing is the wrong way to look at it. It’s incremental gross margin dollars, bringing people in more frequently, appealing to a younger audience, totally incremental from the rest of our store and driving trips. So we’re thrilled about that business and Navdeep’s point: The math will (work) so that we can grow gross margin the full year.” (link)
