Louisiana Judge William Jorden issued an injunction allowing 42 student-athletes from various sports to play a fifth season, including Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, both of whom plan to follow Football HC Lane Kiffin from Ole Miss to LSU. ESPN’s Pete Thamel notes Jorden “explicitly stated that LSU, NCAA and SEC are all enjoined from taking ‘actions that negatively impact’ the athletes.” According to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, Louisiana plaintiffs attorney Ryan Downton says he would ask the court to hold LSU in contempt if the school decides not to add the players. The SEC, who will appeal the ruling, in a statement: “We disagree with the court’s decision. The SEC's Presidents and Chancellors unanimously adopted a clear and reasonable standard: member universities should not place former professional athletes on their rosters. The Conference and its member universities have the right to establish, through agreed-upon governance procedures, the rules under which they voluntarily compete and to expect those rules to be followed. The SEC will continue to defend this standard, the principle of fair competition, and the Conference's authority to govern competition among its member universities." (link, link, link, link,)

Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti joined Andy & Ari On3 yesterday & here are his key comments…

The B1G’s willingness to support a rule requiring its teams to play at least 10 power conference games for CFP consideration if it helps the SEC support the idea of a 24-team format: “We’re comfortable making commitments to do that as a league. I think you’ve probably seen some reporting around what the SEC is asking about as part of the process of getting to 24. I think [Commissioner] Greg [Sankey] is right. His position about doing things to strengthen the game. … If you get to 24, we’re going to put our money where our mouth is. We’re going to do what we said, which is we’re going to improve our schedules.”

Head coaches driving momentum for a 24-team playoff format: "I give a lot of credit to our coaches. I think we did a good job as a staff here at the Big Ten in explaining why we want the 24. We went to them very early on in the process to get their thoughts about it, how it would be scheduled, the format, the access, all of it. And they were united in talking about it. Our coaches have a lot of influence. … I think other coaches started having the same opinions and that built the momentum because ultimately the coaches are the ones that have the loudest voice.” (link)

Georgia Tech AD Ryan Alpert and AVP/Executive Deputy AD Brent Jones were guests on JohnWallStreet’s Big Business on Campus podcast. D1.takeaways…

Alpert on standardizing valuations during apparel negotiations: "There's always a cash element to these deals. There's a product element to these deals and there's a sponsorship element. ... If you want to take cash and translate it to product dollars at retail or you want to take your retail dollars and translate it to cash, I think that's a little bit of the misnomer out there and sometimes the leading headlines when people say their deals are so great is a lot of that can be influxed in product, but what are you using as a product standpoint? Do your programs need more? If they have a multitude of uniforms and they have enough gear, how are you then taking that product dollar and translating it into cash or sponsorship dollars that can help you several different ways in your athletic department?”

Jones on repurposing campus real estate to generate premium revenue: "We are transforming our student cafeteria, which is brand new in Fanning Center, into a sports bar. ... This is not assigned seating. It's all general admission. It's stand-only. It offers about a 100 outside and about another 150 to 200 inside. It's going to have three premium bars. ... It is literally going to have the best sight lines probably in America for a college football game."

Alpert on declining to move the Tennessee game to prioritize season ticket acquisition: "Knowing that we could have a tremendous home schedule with Colorado and Tennessee to start the year, it really helped us in our sponsorship growth. That really helped us in growing our season ticket base this year. ... Every deal, every situation, every contract, every offer needs to be evaluated for what is its upside and what are we trying to gain from a programmatic standpoint." (link)

DePaul AD DeWayne Peevy sat for a Q&A with the CALS Report podcast to outline the Blue Demons’ new five-year plan, "Beyond the Dream," following an overhaul that increased annual fundraising from $1.1M in FY20 to a department-record $15.6M in FY26. The updated roadmap targets specific internal metrics by 2031, including $50M in total fundraising, 10% annual ticket revenue growth, 5% annual donor growth, and 90% season ticket renewal rates. More of what you need to know…

Requiring evidence that athletics drives university enrollment and admissions: "I don't think athletics can simply declare that it's the front porch. ... We want to evaluate our relationship to applications and enrollment, to interest, student engagement and retention, to alumni participation, fundraising and donor acquisition, corporate engagement, media exposure. ... The question is no longer whether athletics creates visibility, it's whether we can convert that visibility into measurable institutional value."

Prioritizing revenue generation and basketball during recent budget cuts: "We have had to make some difficult reductions in force while the competitive cost of college athletics is rising at a high level. ... We kind of gave priority to investments capable of driving future growth, particularly basketball, revenue generation, fundraising, and the new practice facility. Because those things had to continue. They couldn't stop." (link)

UMass entered the 2026 football season looking to snap a 16-game losing streak and USA Today's Jordan Mendoza caught up with Minuteman AD Ryan Bamford to find out what changes the program made in the offseason. Bamford says of managing an independent football program: "It was a real challenge trying to find our footing, given the fact that we didn't have a conference to play in. There's a reason why Notre Dame's the only one that's persisted as an independent, obviously because of their brand and their revenue lines and all the ways that they can support their football program in particular. And there's a reason why all the rest of us have gone in and out of independent." More Bamford: “I would argue a majority of the inputs that impact success have completely changed here. I couldn't have said that in the last decade. … We're not thinking about ‘How do you win a handful, three, four, five games?’ We're thinking about winning as many games on our 12-game schedule as you can. Nobody's running from the idea.” Looks like the process is working, as the Minutemen on Thursday night defeated Rutgers to end the streak. (link)

North Carolina Men’s Basketball HC Michael Malone has spearheaded a $20M+ roster build for the program ahead of the 2026-27 season, marking a 40% payroll boost over last year’s $14M investment, per Inside Carolina’s Greg Barnes. Following the March dismissal of HC Hubert Davis after a first-round NCAA Tournament exit, Malone, who lacks traditional UNC program ties, reinvigorated donor engagement beyond his contracted $6.75M direct revenue-sharing allocation, uniting Tar Heels’ AD Steve Newmark, MBB Executive Director/GM Jim Tanner and the Rams Club through a more integrated roster construction, fundraising and NIL planning process. Malone outlined the immediate challenge he faced upon taking over the program in Chapel Hill: "The day I was hired was the day the portal opened, and when you consider when I walked into a room, and there’s 100 names on the board of which I know none of them, I think we’ve been able to put together a pretty good team, a competitive team, but we have so much work to do." (link)

Following the resignation of North Carolina Football GM Michael Lombardi yesterday, WRAL’s Pat Welter, Brian Murphy and Jack Hagel provide details on his departure, noting the probe is ongoing and “lawyers hired to conduct the investigation are also questioning people about whether defensive coordinator Steve Belichick used drugs on the job or provided drugs to at least one player — and, separately, about whether a member of UNC’s recruiting staff had a sexual relationship with a player, people familiar with the investigation told WRAL. The lawyers also asked about possible sexual relationships between assistant coaches and recruiting staff, the people said.” Additionally, interviewees were reportedly asked about “the culture of the football program under Bill Belichick and Lombardi. They said a lawyer who conducted the interviews was questioning current and former Tar Heels players, their parents and staff members as part of the investigation. The firm was seeking documents and screenshots of text conversations, they said. And the people said they were asked whether they had reported any potentially questionable behavior to Bill Belichick.” Lots more. (link)

SMU suspended Volleyball HC Sam Erger for two matches for "impermissible communication,” a university spokesperson confirmed to The Dallas Morning News Thursday. Tennessee is honoring East Tennessee native and the late legendary singer-songwriter Dolly Parton by selecting one of her tracks as the football program’s new fourth-quarter song at Neyland Stadium, per Volquest’s Mike Wilson. The exact song UT has chosen and how long it will be utilized after Saturday’s home opener against Furman are unknown. Parton’s tune will replace Morgan Wallen’s “The Way I Talk,” which has served as the Vols’ anthem between the third and fourth quarters since mid-2024. (link)

Space inside the ARCC that currently holds those departments will be transformed into dedicated locker room space for the baseball and softball programs. (link)

The SEC has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama against LSU, including President Wade Rousse and AD Verge Ausberry, and Football HC Lane Kiffin. In its complaint, the league requests the court “enter a preliminary and permanent injunction prohibiting Defendants from violating the Conference’s First Amendment rights by compelling the Conference to associate with conduct that is contrary to the Conference’s purpose and mission.” The SEC’s argument that the school and Kiffin “began an orchestrated campaign to recruit professional athletes to join LSU’s football roster for the 2026-27 season” represents an aggressive league approach, as it takes steps to self-govern and enforce a league-wide rule. Per Thursday’s filing, “every SEC member institution — including LSU — has affirmed that individuals who choose to leave college athletics, sign professional playing contracts, and compete professionally should not then be permitted to return to college competition.” More from On3’s Pete Nakos. (link)

As the SEC's federal lawsuit against LSU was filed and became public on Thursday, Commissioner Greg Sankey was on the stand testifying in a Baton Rouge court in the preliminary injunction hearing involving former NFL players Zxavian Harris and Dae’Quan Wright. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that Sankey’s testimony at today’s hearing lasted more than three hours with the commissioner staying in his custom monotone for the duration. One Sankey takeaway: “The NFL is not a recruiting ground for college football. It never has been.” (link)

WAFB Sports Director Jacques Doucet on today’s Baton Rouge court hearing: “[Plaintiff’s Attorney] Tony Clayton is hammering SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and his attorney, Jason Williams, keeps objecting - and nearly always getting overruled. After the latest such time - Clayton said ‘as my grandma used to say - ain’t no fun when the rabbit got the gun!’ The judge ordered that comment to be struck from the record.” (link)

South Carolina Attorney General/Republican Gubernatorial candidate Alan Wilson speaks out in support of the SEC in its ongoing battle with LSU over the issue of pro athletes attempting a return to college. “College athletics is meant for just that, college students! Putting a previous NFL player on a college roster against the directive of the Southeastern Conference, not only circumvents the authority of the conference, but also undermines the spirit of college athletics. It is in the best interest of South Carolina colleges and universities to stand with my fellow Attorneys General against this practice and in support of the SEC.” (link)

Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch also weighed in on the pro-college player eligibility debate: “As Mississippi’s Chief Legal Officer, I stand with Ole Miss and Mississippi State … I support their right to do what is necessary to protect the integrity of their programs and the integrity of the sport. I support their right to promote the best interests of their student-athletes.” (link)

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry took to X to respond to South Carolina AG Alan Wilson and Georgia AG Chris Carr: “Calling them ‘NFL players’ is at best disingenuous, and at worst intentionally deceptive. They are not professional football players circling back after years in the NFL. They are college players who were told, by the NCAA, that they were done. So they took the only door that was open—only to watch the NCAA change the lock behind them.” (link)

U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken has overruled objections from incoming Division I student-athletes to the continuation of the House settlement, clearing the way for direct revenue sharing and roster limits to proceed without court-ordered changes for Year 2, per CBS’ Brandon Marcello, who notes “this was expected.” (link)

Republican leaders have announced that the final two weeks of the pre-mid-term election House session have been cancelled, with members set to depart Washington no later than September 17 and not return until mid-November. Per Politico’s Meredith Lee Hill, Mia McCarthy and Riley Rogerson, the move will severely curtail what had been a full September legislative calendar. “Leaders would recall House members for those canceled weeks if the Senate moves forward with a party-line budget reconciliation package in the meantime, GOP leaders indicated, though that is not anticipated. The decision comes as candidates agitate to get back on the campaign trail and as GOP leaders continue to struggle to maintain control of the House floor.” (link)

College Football Playoff officials are considering a move toward triggering a mandatory 30-day negotiating window with ESPN as they pursue the value of potential expansion options, per Ross Dellenger, who writing for On3, notes sources caution the decision has not been formally made, but talks are accelerating to the point that network officials and staff members are expecting it to occur. The decision would signal serious interest in exploring the worth of a 24-team playoff format, while not committing to expand. The CFP Management Committee spoke during its Tuesday call about triggering the window which would grant playoff officials flexibility to meet the Dec. 1 deadline — a contractual date in which leaders must decide if the current 12-team field will expand in time for next year’s event. “Already, the networks have pushed back a deadline for conferences to notify them if they will eliminate their conference championship games — a necessary move in any 24-team expanded bracket. That deadline is also expected to align with the CFP expansion date of Dec. 1.” (link

Sam Houston State AD Bobby Williams will retire at the end of this academic year as the longest tenured DI AD in the country. President Alisa White: “Bobby Williams' extraordinary tenure has helped shape Sam Houston Athletics and strengthen our university in lasting ways. His commitment to student-athletes, coaches and staff, along with his leadership through a transformational period for our athletics program, has created a legacy that will be felt for generations. We are grateful for his 45 years of service to Sam Houston and for the lasting impact he and his family have made on our Bearkat community.” (link)

Boston College AD Blake James has received a two-year contract extension that would keep him with the Eagles through 2031, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel. (link)

Iowa State announces the official launch of its AD search. As part of the process in conjunction with Parker Executive Search, ISU President David Cook will consult with an advisory committee consisting of university representatives, the Iowa Board of Regents and community and former student-athletes. What type of qualities or traits is Cook looking for in the next AD? “In this day and age, we’ve got to remember what's important. This is about students and student-athletes and that's something that Jamie’s done for the last 20-plus years. … That's critical to Iowa State. That's critical to the values of the institution, to our fan base, to our alumni. That's going to be something that's going to be really important to us.” (link, link)

The Pac-12 is launching the "Pac-12 Field Pass," featuring in-game player and coach audio access; instituting live broadcast integration from its officiating replay command center; mandating player availability reporting; and installing an executive league governance team led by Executive Committee Chair/Texas State President Kelly Damphousse and AD Committee Chair/San Diego State AD John David Wicker. Additionally, the league made its bowl partnerships official, for both the former and current members, and finalized the tiebreaker policy for berths in the Pac-12 Championship Game on December 4 (on the home field of the No. 1 seed). Spectrum has inked multi-year, Learfield-facilitated agreements to place its logo on the 25-yard-lines at Wisconsin’s Camp Randall Stadium and TCU’s Amon G. Carter Stadium, as well as on South Carolina’s Dragon Seats [sideline benches] and student club space in Williams-Brice Stadium. (link)

Virginia Tech agrees to an enhanced partnership with Virginia Credit Union to place the financial institution’s logo on the field between the 20- and 30-yard lines at Lane Stadium. In addition, the agreement will create opportunities for Virginia Credit Union to engage directly with the VT community through fan-focused experiences, promotions and community initiatives. Ongoing Gateway District construction that’s limited capacity at David Booth Memorial Stadium to just 32K could cost Kansas as much as $1M per football game this season, per KCUR’s Sam Zeff, who notes the project is one reason athletics is projecting a $13M budget deficit this year, on top of last year’s $16M shortfall. That’s not the only financial headwind the department is currently facing as the school anticipates bringing in almost $4M less in apparel sponsorships, merchandising and investment income, while projecting to spend $2M more on NIL licensing and student-athlete salaries and $3M more on scholarships and housing. As a result, the university is diverting money from academics for the second year in a row to subsidize athletics with $16M and drawing down a $50M line of credit the athletic board approved back in April. On a positive note, philanthropic giving is up and KU expects to make about $2M from the Jayhawks’ game against Arizona State in London on September 19. Despite the multimillion-dollar deficits, Kansas AD Travis Goff remains bullish on athletics’ financial future. “There's a chance to get into the black in next year's budget. I'm not necessarily assuming it will happen. It'll be very close. Then the subsequent year, which would be 2029, is heavy into the black, starting to really pay down that line of credit.” More. Middle Tennessee unveils plans for a $16M upgrade to the west side seating area of Floyd Stadium that’s expected to add more than 2,200 new 24-inch chairbacks with substantially wider 48-inch seating treads. In addition to the new seating, existing benches in the upper corners of the west side will include backs for greater fan comfort. The project will include patios on the north and south ends of the west sidelines that will be open to all fans, featuring limited concessions, televisions, picnic tables and a party deck. Two 57-foot ribbon boards will also be added between the patio and party deck at each end of the west side, enhancing in-game production for fan entertainment. Designed by Gilbert McLaughlin Casella Architects, with Reeves Young serving as the general contractor, the project is scheduled to begin immediately following the 2026 football season, with completion set for August 2027. Eastern Washington is moving forward with the $8M second phase of its Roos Field upgrade project, with plans to construct an elevated press box above the eastern grandstands. This next stage of development is expected to commence next year and be completed in time for the 2028 football season. The effort is part of nearly $250M that EWU expects to spend on facility and capital improvements over a 10-year period. (link
