When did the college football arms race pivot from NIL funds to weaponized pot roast burgers?

That’s just one of the meaty questions framing the newest CRO.ticker. Here are three key takeaways from today’s edition:

The Admissions Flip: Facing shrinking demographics and mounting operating deficits, universities are aggressively deploying automated direct-admit offers and pivoting toward AI curricula to lower entry barriers and immediately prove degree ROI to skeptical families.

De-Risking Creative: Following Callaway's messy split with Good Good Golf, organizations are now embedding mandatory reshoot clauses into creator contracts, elevating talent vetting to the C-suite, and empowering agencies to kill non-compliant creative before it ever goes public.

Content Beyond the Core: Pro sports franchises are increasingly engineering culture-first entertainment to hook non-traditional fans, as seen by a 9-inning TikTok romantic comedy at Wrigley Field and a GTA-animated Bulls schedule release.

Scroll down for UEFA's new authenticated sleeve patch collectibles, NYCFC handing off minor-league business operations to private equity, and Apollo's $10B private aviation acquisition.

THE COMMON CENTER OF SPORTS & HIGHER ED

Texas Tech secured a 15-year, $75M stadium naming rights agreement with financial services firm Galaxy, replacing AT&T (who paid off a $21M deal early) and removing the name of former president Clifford B. Jones, whose initial $100K gift helped build the venue in 1947. Huddle Up publisher Joe Pompliano notes the sponsorship aligns with the crypto and AI investment firm's development of the Helios campus, a 2,200-acre data center located 60 miles from Lubbock that the company purchased from Argo Blockchain for $65M. Here’s what you need to know…

Data shows 71% of Americans oppose local AI data center construction—prompting over 500 municipalities to limit or ban new projects—but the firm is utilizing a $3.5B debt offering to build facilities that will lease computing power to CoreWeave, projecting $1.2B in annual revenue once operating at full capacity.

Pompliano argues the $5M annual commitment to the university functions as an inexpensive community relations investment to protect the infrastructure project from political friction: "In the end, it’s no coincidence that Galaxy’s sponsorship deal with Texas Tech perfectly matches CoreWeave's 15-year lease at Helios. Revenue is secured, and now Galaxy is simply moving a small portion of that money to Texas Tech to de-risk its construction and planned future expansion. That is a smart strategy and another example of how sports, politics, and technology are often intertwined." (link)

Extra Points’ Matt Brown examines some of the new regional stadium food and beverage offerings across major college football venues from Levy Restaurants and Aramark for the 2026 campaign. Check out the goods…

UCF is introducing "Pretzel Swords" alongside opponent-themed hot dogs such as the "TCU Super Frog Dog," while Tulane is highlighting local culinary flavors through "Thai Fried Pork Ribs," a "Louisiana Crawfish Roll" and the returning fan-favorite "Beignet Chicken Sandwich."

At LSU, offerings are set to include "Boudin Crawfish Nachos," a "3rd & Footlong Banh Mi Dog" and frozen spiked slushies, while Air Force is debuting its "Air Superiority Sandwich." Meanwhile, defending national titlist Indiana is rolling out "The Bad Elmer’s Pot Roast Burger" – a chuck roast burger smothered in Bloomington's Upland Brewing Co. porter onion gravy and topped with tater tots.

Arizona is introducing "The Zookeeper," a multi-protein burger featuring beef, chicken, bacon, Spam, egg, cheeses and peanut butter and jelly. Brown on the physical toll of Arizona's unique stadium offering: "Listen, I enjoyed Epic Meal Time when I was in college as much as the next dude, but would I want to eat that in the 106-degree heat? While also being awake enough to scream BEAR DOWN and be aware of my surroundings? … At my age, I do think that sandwich would kill me." More. (link)

In response to The Wall Street Journal’s critical look at Syracuse’s business model earlier in the week, Chancellor J. Michael Haynie addressed the campus community regarding higher education disruption, framing the university's 1.5% annual operating deficit as a prompt to adapt rather than a financial crisis. While student demand remains high, Haynie emphasized the need to clearly communicate degree value to prospective families through targeted academic and campus investments. These initiatives include a new AI portfolio, the Center for the Creator Economy addressing a $500B industry, the Whitman 2030 business school plan, a Micron-partnered Center for Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing, and three new residence halls scheduled to open in fall 2027. Additionally, a faculty committee examining the university's financial structure will deliver an independent report by Nov. 15. Haynie stressed that higher education must accelerate its pace of adaptation to serve students and maintain long-term viability: "The jobs our graduates will pursue are changing. What students want from their education is changing. Their reasons for pursuing a degree are changing. Higher education has a long history of moving slowly. We do not have the luxury of that pace right now. We will move with urgency because the institutions that do not adapt will be the ones left behind." (link)

Colleges across the U.S. are increasingly adopting direct admissions initiatives to combat shrinking high school demographics and financial headwinds, offering admission based on high school transcripts without requiring formal applications, essays, or fees. Participating institutions on the Common App have more than tripled since the 2023-24 cycle to represent 20% of platform partners, while higher-education platform Niche features over 160 participating schools offering an average of $17K in annual merit aid, according to The Wall Street Journal's Roshan Fernandez. With national non-profit acceptance rates topping 70%, schools are leveraging automated offers to widen applicant pools and boost yield; Jacksonville State garnered roughly 2,000 direct-admit submissions and converted 150 to 200 enrollments in its first cycle. National Association for College Admission Counseling CEO Angel Perez on the benefits of reversing the traditional recruitment model: "Instead of a student applying to the institution, the institution applies to them. It’s a way for students not to have to jump through hoops in order to get into college." (link)

NACMA Timeout Podcast
Tom Theodorakis, Director of Athletics & CEO, Army West Point

In the latest episode of the NACMA Timeout Podcast, Army West Point Director of Athletics & CEO Tom Theodorakis sits down to discuss the unique responsibilities and strategic priorities of leading one of the nation's most distinct Division I athletic departments.

The 22-minute episode explores the mission of developing cadet-athletes into future military leaders while simultaneously pursuing high-level competitive success. Theodorakis dives into the realities of funding academy athletics, dispelling common misconceptions about government subsidies by highlighting the critical role of external partnerships, while detailing massive ongoing facility investments and the continuous effort to deliver an extraordinary Division I experience that aligns with the overarching mission of the United States Military Academy.

PREMIUM, OFF-SEASON & NEW FAN DEVELOPMENT

Under Armour and the Baltimore Ravens recently signed a 10-year partnership extension featuring an exclusive apparel collection, continued youth football investments, and naming rights to the new Under Armour Landing hospitality area at M&T Bank Stadium. Retail Brew’s Jeena Sharma reports the agreement introduces a multi-drop premium merchandise line sold exclusively at the venue's year-round Flock Shop, allowing inventory to shift alongside weather and consumer demand. Under Armour Senior Director of Sports Marketing Ryan Collins emphasized how the deal reflects a broader retail evolution away from basic logo placement toward elevated consumer experiences: "It’s been more of a strategic partnership together versus transactional. It used to be that something was just some signage that has turned into a much wider and more expansive relationship than before. ... I think a little bit more premium, a little bit more elevated products, some tastefully done products are becoming more in high demand. There’s a lot of just simple fan gear that is out there. We try to elevate and bring more of a premium touch to that." (link)

UEFA and Fanatics are launching sleeve "debut patches" for the 2026-27 Champions League season with plans to expand the program to the Women's Champions League in 2027-28, according to The Athletic's David Ornstein. Players making their first appearance in the 36-team competition will wear specialized patches that Topps will authenticate and embed into 1-of-1 trading cards after the match. The collectible initiative accompanies a six-year extension of UEFA's commercial partnership with Fanatics through 2033, a deal brokered by Relevent Football Partners. Ornstein notes patch cards have generated substantial secondary market value across leagues including MLB, the NFL, and the NBA, as demonstrated by Dick’s Sporting Goods purchasing a Paul Skenes debut card for $1.1M in March 2025. UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin: "Renewing our partnership with Fanatics for UEFA club competitions reflects the strength of our collaboration and our shared commitment to delivering best-in-class products for fans and collectors globally. Fanatics know how to make big moments feel special. We are excited for what’s next." (link)

The Chicago Bulls' Grand Theft Auto-inspired schedule release video generated over 1.1M views across platforms within 24 hours—ranking fourth among NBA teams—and reached 150K engagements and nearly 4M impressions within a week, according to data from Mondo Metrics and the Sponcon Sports newsletter. Digital Content Director Nikko Tan and VP of Content Marketing Luka Dukich developed the animated feature featuring mascot Benny the Bull and forward Matas Buzelis, embedding local Chicago references and NBA Easter eggs to drive watch time. Dukich highlighted how animation provided creative freedom to produce shareable offseason content: "It gives us space to play and do different things that are harder to do if you’re doing an actual, physical shoot. ... You don’t even have to be a Bulls fan to watch that and get excited." (link)

Minnesota Twins owner Tom Pohlad is working to rebuild fan trust following last season's roster teardown, as average home attendance at Target Field sits at 21,371—trailing 2025's 21,836 mark. The franchise absorbed an additional $8.3M in payroll as buyers at the trade deadline, promoted top prospect Walker Jenkins, and collaborated with Delaware North and the Minnesota Ballpark Authority on over $4M in stadium improvements, including $3.4M spent on concessions. Additional ticket initiatives—such as $2 beer happy hours and a Home-Field Advantage program offering up to a 20% credit capped at $2,000 per account—helped generate a 13.7% increase in ticket scans, according to Senior Director of Ticket Sales Craig Gumz. Twins EVP/CRO Sean Moore: "Winning is the ultimate supplement to make the experience at Target Field go. The music sounds sweeter, the food tastes better when the team on the field is having better success." (link)

RISK: TAKING, MITIGATING

NYCFC is the first MLS club to hand off business operations for its MLS Next Pro affiliate to Hometown Soccer Holdings (HSH), a joint venture between the league and private equity firm KKR. Under the arrangement, NYCFC II will relocate to Middlesex County, N.J., beginning in 2027 to compete under a new local brand at Nexus, a $350M sports and entertainment district featuring a 6,500-seat stadium developed alongside The Sports Facilities Companies. HSH will manage ticketing, sponsorships, branding, merchandise, and venue operations, while NYCFC retains sporting operations, talent development, and youth programming at the site. NYCFC COO Jennifer O’Sullivan: "This is the best of both worlds. They still get to be a part of New York City FC’s professional pathway. So, they’re still going to be benefiting from that, but they now also get to compete as a club with its own supporters, its own community, its own sense of purpose." (link)

Serie A is considering binding bids from private equity firms including Carlyle, Bain, Oaktree, and Nextalia for a 10% to 20% minority stake in a venture holding its international media, betting, and sponsorship rights, according to Reuters. JP Morgan is advising the league on the sale, which values the international business between €3B to €4B based on €200M in core annual earnings and €250M in sales. Any transaction requires approval from at least 14 of the league's 20 clubs, coming after a previous €1.7B domestic rights deal with CVC collapsed in 2021 due to a lack of club consensus. (link)

Apollo is acquiring control of fixed-base operator Atlantic Aviation at a $10B valuation from KKR, which acquired the business for $4.5B in 2021. Bloomberg’s Ryan Gould reports that KKR expanded the network from 67 to 108 locations nationwide while investing over $2B in capital, including a development at Teterboro Airport that increases hangar space from 50K to 90K square feet to accommodate up to 30 additional aircraft. Gould also notes Atlantic Aviation holds long-term leases at 15 of the 20 busiest U.S. business aviation airports, servicing high-traffic events including the Kentucky Derby in Louisville and markets hosting NFL franchises. Atlantic Aviation CEO Jeff Foland detailed how investors have shifted their perspective on private aviation infrastructure: "Ten years ago, I think you would have looked at a business like this and tended to view these as gas stations for airplanes. I would tell you today it’s viewed very differently." (link)

The Chicago Cubs are launching a 17-micro-episode scripted romantic comedy series titled "Nine Innings to Love" exclusively on TikTok. Greenfly Director of Strategy Neil Horowitz explains the in-house production takes place across nine innings at Wrigley Field (so it’s not just a clever name) to engage non-traditional sports audiences by capitalizing on serialized digital trends like BookTok. The launch reminds Horowitz of this past remark from Clemson Ventures VP of Content Kevin Richardson, who told him: "How do we get the non-Clemson fan who doesn't care about wins and losses, who doesn't care if we won a championship or not, but they care about something else? Rather than assuming all content must center on games, practices, and player interviews, organizations are exploring how to build content libraries that can be distributed across multiple platforms and streamers, creating entirely new revenue streams and audience pathways." (link)

Limited Supply host Nik Sharma joined Heatmap.com’s Dylan Ander to discuss the evolution of social commerce and creator marketing following a presentation at the Social Commerce Summit in New York. Sharma outlined how direct-to-consumer brands are shifting from traditional performance advertising to building exclusive creator networks, citing the commission-based affiliate model pioneered by Comfrt founder Hudson Leogrande. He also contrasted the success of operationally sound celebrity brands like Feastables and Lemme against failed ventures involving figures like Kyle Kuzma (Barcode), Gwen Stefani (Give Beauty), and Adam Levine (Calirosa Tequila). More from Sharma on the shift from traditional ad targeting to creator-driven micro-cultures: "In my opinion, personas map right to culture and creators create or operate within micro cultures and every angle that you test as a performance marketer is basically, you know, equated to creators within micro cultures." (link)

Meanwhile, Ad Age’s Gillian Follett explores how brands are restructuring creator ad approval workflows following Callaway's termination of a three-year partnership with creator group Good Good Golf. An Association of National Advertisers report found 84% of brands rely on external agencies for influencer marketing, with review chains encompassing 5 to 50 individuals depending on company scale, according to Sixteenth President RJ Larese. Experts advise brands to build at least two mandatory reshoots into creator contracts, outline clear brand values within campaign briefs, and elevate high-investment talent vetting to executive leadership. An influencer agency CEO underscored that preventing brand damage requires reviewers empowered to reject non-compliant creative: "I once saw an ad that was almost as controversial [as Good Good’s] that came through to me, and we didn’t even let that go to the brand. We were instantly like, ‘Re-film. Absolutely not.’ So, it does happen. You just have to have a backbone." (link)
