“Companies want marketing leaders to fix growth, reposition the business, build demand, sharpen the brand, align sales and prove impact fast. But the data is screaming that too many CMOs are being handed transformation-sized mandates on trial-period timelines. That is not just hard on CMOs. It is expensive and self-defeating for companies.”

Puck's John Ourand caught up with SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey yesterday at the In the Arena conference to discuss the future of college athletics. Sankey’s most important comments…

➤ "The notion that you’re going to take like 130 football programs, put them in a negotiating pool, and everybody’s going to make three times the money—I think that’s fiction. I think the notion of a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for combined media rights in this environment is a nice story to tell, but it’s really about control. And so I don’t like that part.”

➤ Would the SEC ever expand to the West Coast? "No. I don’t even have that conversation. We were approached. I’m the one person who didn’t take it away from the Pac-12. If you play any sport in the Southeastern Conference, you have at most a two-hour plane ride from point A to point B. The longest trip prior to expansion was from Columbia, South Carolina, to College Station, Texas. Now it’s from Columbia, South Carolina to Austin, Texas. So we’ve allowed our fans to make trips. We’ve made our scheduling decision around nine games. You know, coaches don’t like that necessarily, but you can point to geographic access. And you watch our fans travel to different places.”

➤ Expanding the College Football Playoff to 24 teams: "There are a lot of ideas, and our concerns relate to how you manage the economics. Is there value in 24 or not? I don’t think people understand the difficulty of going week to week to week to week in December. … We’ve looked at it and said CFP selection decisions are negatively impacting regular-season scheduling, particularly big non-conference games. That needs to be addressed first, and also the economics, what we do with conference championship games, where the games fit, and understanding the impact.” (link)

New Big East Commissioner Tim Brosnan has outlined a business philosophy shift designed to lean into commerce to better monetize the league’s assets, per SBJ’s Mike Mazzeo. “This assignment that I have accepted: it’s not a job for me. It’s a passion. And I want to cap my career knowing that the greatness that is the Big East is secure for years to come. And I believe that the Big East can and will prosper in the years ahead, and that its legacy and traditions will endure far beyond my years.” More key notes…

➤ Among the business opportunities Brosnan is pursuing, the conference has initiated discussions about more co-promotion with TV partners including Fox, Peacock, Turner and ESPN, while pushing sponsors for greater regular-season activation around the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments. Brosnan: “Our focus is on hoops, 24/7/365, there are no days off or distractions from football.”

➤ Additionally, the league is developing a commerce committee to determine how to better integrate and share best practices across member institutions; exploring digital content opportunities, with an eye on its 150K students as potential content creators; offering its "full-throated" support for the passage of the Protect College Sports Act, and re-endorsing NCAA President Charlie Baker’s call to ban prop betting. (link)

➤ Brosnan on the Big East potentially expanding in the coming years: "I think that not this year, but in a couple of years, there will be more opportunity to expand the conference... I don't think that's now, but I think it's coming." (link)

Northwestern AD Mark Jackson joined the Big Business on Campus podcast with JohnWallStreet Founder Corey Leff and Playfly Sports Chairman Michael Schreiber to discuss tonight’s opening of the Ryan Field and more. Here’s what you need to know…

➤ Northwestern's unique competitive advantage: "It is a unique combination of, obviously, academic prestige, competing in the Power Two as a private university. There's really nobody else you know in the top 10 of academic institutions that has that makeup. Then [being] connected to a world-class city like Chicago only adds to the allure. … Although not the biggest alumni network in the world, I would argue in many ways the most influential. When you think about billionaires per cap across the Power Two, we have more than anybody and that's not to be said in an arrogant way. We just have a tremendous amount of success, so we pride ourselves in that we're uniquely Northwestern.”

➤ Generating new revenue through premium offerings and stadium operations: "In the history of Chicago, to start, we've never had a premium product around college football. That’s no slight to our previous stadium, but it was literally falling apart. ... The creation of the LLC itself allowed us to create a dynamic team and we brought in the who's who of college and professional sports to build around that team and allow us to grow revenue in a way that's never been done here before. So, as we start off, yeah, we're 3 or 4x of overall revenue.” (link)

Cal Co-ADs Jenny Simon-O’Neill and Jay Larson appeared on the Tell The Whole Damn World podcast to discuss navigating co-leadership, expanding corporate revenue streams, facility upgrades and more. Here are the main takeaways…

➤ Simon-O'Neill on the operational structure of paired leadership: "When the chancellor [Rich Lyons] was in the private sector, he worked at a company that thought that co-headships were really important to the business model. … So when he appointed us in this role, he was really intentional about the way we were set up so that we could be successful. Right off the bat, he said, ‘it's really important that you set the stage for success and make sure that people aren't able to split you.’ When you’re talking to one of us, you’re talking to both of us."

➤ Simon-O'Neill on capital project milestones across campus facilities: "When we took on this role, we vowed to solve some 20-year problems. ... We're excited about our basketball practice facility. ... [We’re] also excited to have a revamped Hall of Fame that we just opened a couple of weeks ago. And then the team store, that’s one we’ve been thinking and talking about for a really long time.” Larson adds: “A couple that are open soon, beach volleyball, the new facility on the west side of campus, will open up in late October. Softball will open up in the spring in time for the season to start." (link)

➤ The NBA has retained Excel Search & Advisory to lead its search for the next WNBA commissioner, SBJ’s Tom Friend reports, adding: “The speculation on external candidates has ranged from the political world (Michelle Obama and Kamala Harris) to the corporate world (Ally Financial’s Andrea Brimmer) to outside sports executives (Renie Anderson, the NFL’s chief revenue officer and executive vice president, and Duke AD Nina King) to former players (Swin Cash and WNBPA President Nneka Ogwumike).” (link)

Western Michigan held its introductory press conference for new AD Alex Gary, who said during his remarks: “Here’s what I believe. Where we are today is not our destination. It is a strong foundation. When you have a strong foundation, you don’t start over. You accelerate. You raise your expectation, you raise your ambition, and you raise your belief in what’s possible. The people are here to do that, and certainly the passion is here to do that. The opportunity is here to do that. Now we just have to put it all together and make sure that every alum, every Bronco, everyone feels that the best days of Bronco athletics are ahead. Because we’ve come too far not to go farther and we’ve done too much not to do more. We are proud of where Western Michigan Athletics is today. And now we need to build what Western Michigan athletics can become. …We’re the best program in the MAC. That’s evidenced by back-to-back-to-back MAC Director’s Cup championships. Now we want to be the best program outside the Power Four." (link, link)

Intersport and the American Volleyball Coaches Association have partnered to launch the creation of AVCA Match Point, dubbed an “elite” two-day women’s volleyball championship event that will take place at Freedom Hall in Louisville from April 10-11, 2027. Nebraska, Louisville, Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Stanford and Wisconsin are on board, with two additional programs to be announced at a later date that round out the eight-team field. (link)

Continuing its positional series, Collegiate Sports Connect has published a new Coach Intel report benchmarking guaranteed compensation for Division I Football running back coaches. The data highlights a robust Power 4 market where elite recruiters and backfield developers command a $425K median salary, with the top quartile pushing past the $600K mark. Notably, the report reveals a massive financial premium for assistants carrying elevated leadership designations; upgrading a running back coach's title to "Assistant" or "Associate Head Coach" correlates to a staggering $250K increase in median pay over the standard title ($650K vs. $400K), with six of the top seven earners holding this distinction. This massive investment at the top creates a pronounced financial separation between conference tiers, as the Power 4 baseline is more than triple that of their Group of 6 counterparts ($127,675) and dwarfs the FCS median of $60K. Take a look at the full report. (link)

Nike stock has fallen 43% this year following its delisting from the S&P 100 as the company prepares to report fiscal Q1 2027 results, according to Sportico's Sara Germano. Wall Street consensus projects $646M in profit on $11.3B in revenue—down from $1.1B in profit on $11.6B in sales during the same period in 2024—amid projected low-to-mid-single-digit revenue declines. The loss of star endorser Kylian Mbappé to On after 20 years coincides with sell-equivalent ratings from J.P. Morgan, Morgan Stanley, and Bank of America, where analyst Lorraine Hutchinson lowered Nike's price target from $47 to $30. Nike CEO Elliott Hill and newly hired CFO Dave Denton will host the company's first investor day in nine years in November to address product pipeline strategies. Meanwhile, Dick's Sporting Goods Chairman Ed Stack attributed the segment slowdown to shifting consumer preferences away from traditional lifestyle sneakers that “simply aren’t resonating the way they once did.” (link)

NCAA members distributed $1.77B in revenue-share payments, $163.4M in new scholarship spending and $42M in Alston awards in 2025-26, per the College Sports Commission, with those funds reaching almost 35K student-athletes. “Of the 319 opted-in schools, 307 compensated student-athletes directly and 68 reached the cap or came within five percent of it.”  More from Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger: “Plaintiff attorneys receive a 0.75% cut of annual rev-share spend. That’s $13-15M this year, which goes to escrow until the appeal. Attorneys also get 18% of $2.77B in back-damages to athletes (~$500M) and $20M up-front. Total over 10 years should eclipse $700M.” (link, link)

House members are preparing to make what could be significant revisions to the Senate-passed Protect College Sports Act, per Ross Dellenger, who writing for On3, notes such changes threaten to ignite a major procedural battle between the two legislative chambers ahead of Congress’ final day on December 18. There are plenty of “pain points” for House lawmakers, such as the absence of a prohibition against student-athletes being classified as employees, the inclusion of a private-right-of-action concept allowing players to sue institutions and federal oversight caps on conference expansion. Senate leadership insists the current draft is a non-starter for major House amendments, with one “leading voice” in the Senate saying that wholesale House alterations stand to torpedo the bill entirely or trigger retaliatory Senate additions, including salary caps for HCs, ADs and university presidents; mandatory one-year non-compete periods for changing jobs; and potential threats to universities' tax-exempt status. “We are sending it over for adoption as is. It is a final product.” (link)

The Washington Sun’s Reese Gorman and Jesse Dougherty report the major sticking point House Republicans have with the legislation is its failure to prevent student-athletes from gaining employee status. The House-backed SCORE Act, which stalled out and ultimately died in the legislative body earlier this year, barred college athletes from becoming employees, which has long been a goal of the NCAA. The PCSA, however, is neutral on employment, even if labor advocates believe its antitrust protections for the NCAA and conferences would stunt future organizing efforts. “If House Republicans insist on adding an employment ban to this bill, that could affect support among Democrats in the Senate. [Sen. Maria Cantwell] fought hard for the PCSA to avoid the employment question. … To support the bill, those Democrats all broke with the AFL-CIO, which vehemently opposes the legislation. A full-on employment restriction, though, would conceivably be a no-go for many Democratic backers.” In addition, the bill’s failure to impose limits on athletic scholarships for international student-athletes and provisions on conference expansion and realignment have raised concern. (link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini examines how the The Protect College Sports Act’s proposed "Lane Kiffin Rule,” which aims to prevent FBS HCs and staff from leaving programs during competitive seasons, could affect the annual coaching carousel. “How could anyone hire a high-level coach in time for the recruiting and transfer portal periods under the season’s current calendar, in which high schoolers can sign during the first week of December, transfers pick their new schools during the first two weeks of January and the College Football Playoff lasts until late January?” One anonymous AD who supported the PCSA: “I don’t have a good answer for that.” Last season, 24 of the 33 new FBS HCs accepted a new position before their previous team’s season finished. Ultimately, coaches had to give up something for the sake of the larger bill and this was it per AFCA Executive Director Craig Bohl: “A great number of coaches said, if we’re asking for some limitations on players’ movement, we coaches need to have skin in the game. While the bill’s not perfect, coaches feel this is a pathway forward to providing some stability.” (link)

The National Invitation Tournament (NIT) and Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT) have announced changes to their 2027 postseasons, including the reduction of both fields from 32 to 24 teams while shifting selection procedures. With Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championship expansion to 76 teams, the overall number of NCAA-supported postseason opportunities remains steady at 100 student-athletes per gender, with the "First Four Out" receiving automatic qualification, No. 1 seeds and host rights in both secondary tournaments. Under the updated NIT guidelines, exempt bids will shift from the top 12 conferences to the top 10 based on KenPom rankings, alongside one additional exempt bid each for the ACC and SEC, utilizing an average of seven key metrics (including ESPN BPI, NET and Wins Above Bubble) to determine qualified hosts. Meanwhile, the WBIT is establishing a mandatory .500 overall winning percentage for at-large consideration, while guaranteeing under-consideration placement for teams averaging a top-100 NET/WAB ranking and automatic qualification for non-NCAA regular-season league champions ranked 110 or better. Both tournament fields will be revealed on Selection Sunday, March 14, 2027. (link)

Wake Forest has agreed to a multi-year deal, with options to extend, to have Playfly Sports replace Learfield as its exclusive multimedia rights holder and corporate sales arm. Wake Forest AD John Currie: “As we bring The Grounds to life in 2027, we want a partner who understands how professional sports franchises build lasting commercial ecosystems around their venues, and Playfly’s experience doing exactly that makes them the right fit.” (link)

The Atlantic 10 inks a multi-year ticketing partnership with Playfly Sports that centers on sales for the A-10 Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Rice has reportedly agreed to a 20-year naming rights deal with First Community Credit Union that will change the moniker of Rice Stadium to First Community Stadium. The University of Louisiana System has engaged Deloitte to examine its athletics budget problems and recommend solutions, including whether its member institutions should depart the DI ranks for a lower subdivision or even drop to DII or DIII. UL System President Rick Gallot on the $150K study: “We really want an objective set of recommendations that will help us make sound decisions. … They have no limitations on their findings and recommendations. We’re going to need support from all levels in order to really make some of the decisions that we’re going to make … We’re not going to shy away from them.” Per the Louisiana Illuminator’s Piper Hutchinson, dropping to FCS likely wouldn’t help Louisiana Tech, Louisiana or Louisiana Monroe’s financial situation much, as they would still face significant scholarship costs but with less broadcast revenue. “[Recommendations] could include capping coaches’ salaries or switching conferences. Though Gallot seems ready to tackle the problem, athletics administrators and university leaders have expressed reluctance to leave Division I. … While competing at the highest level has some advantages, namely better media rights revenue, dropping to a lower division could significantly reduce travel and scholarships costs, the top culprits behind their fiscal problems.” (link)

San Diego State’s football team is currently dealing with a mumps outbreak as it continues prep for this weekend’s Pac-12 opener versus Texas State. Per ESPN’s Mark Schlabach, a university bulletin to SDSU students noted San Diego County Public Health Services had confirmed 14 cases and that the outbreak remained contained to a single athletic team. While the school has yet to confirm the affected program, the San Diego Union-Tribune previously reported it was football. The Aztecs' initial Wednesday availability report included nearly 36 student-athletes, including 17 who were listed as doubtful or out. Football HC Sean Lewis: “The football gods have not really favored us with the injury luck. Guys have got to be ready to step into the light when the time comes. ... We've been given a nice storm here. But this too shall pass, and we've got to be able to see our way through it." (link)

U.S. District Judge Tiffany Johnson has tossed out a lawsuit led by former college swimmer Riley Gaines against the NCAA, alleging it violated her rights when it allowed transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports. Per Politico’s Bianca Quilantan, Gaines and more than a dozen other current and former college student-athletes sued the association in 2024 under Title IX, with the NCAA's now defunct policy allowing transgender women to compete on sports teams and to utilize facilities that align with their gender identity at the center of the suit. Johnson ruled Monday the NCAA isn’t covered by Title IX because “there is no evidence that the NCAA received federal financial assistance” from the federal government. Gaines said in a statement that she will be appealing the decision. “This momentary setback will not deter me or other women athletes in the least. Rest assured, we will be appealing this decision. We are on the side of truth. I am confident Americans will rally to our side to fight the NCAA. Working together we will defeat the NCAA’s continuing efforts to trample women’s rights in sports.” (link)
