Should a professional hockey league be publishing its own steamy romance audiobooks?
That’s just one of the heated questions framing the newest CRO.ticker. Here are three key takeaways from today’s edition:
➤ The CMO Transformation: Facing flatlined budgets and 4.3-year turnover rates, marketing leaders are absorbing AI governance, PR, and enterprise tech, prompting structural overhauls and giving rise to the "marketing engineer" as companies swap traditional brand stewards for highly accountable commercial operators.
➤ The Romance Pivot: The NHL is placing a massive bet on "romantasy" and "BookTok" trends to monetize its surging female viewership, launching a "Hot for Hockey" campaign featuring steamy audio stories narrated by genre authors. However, analysts warn that chasing niche internet trends risks alienating the core fanbase.
➤ The Yield Game: Stadium operators are pushing the limits of premium extraction, sparking some backlash from legacy fans. While the Orioles rip out 2,000 upper-deck seats to build social drink rails, the Philadelphia Eagles are facing legal action from tailgaters furious over a private parking operator doubling oversized rates to $200.
Scroll down for the Vegas Golden Knights reclaiming 25% of their ticketing inventory from brokers, Black Box Wines landing a league-wide NHL sponsorship, and Fulham building a four-story, members-only spa inside Craven Cottage.
THE EXPANDING MANDATE
A Marketing Brew survey of over 450 professionals reveals a gap between expanding marketing responsibilities and flat budgets. Data shows 60% of respondents believe the CMO role is more important today than five years ago, yet only 17% assert that every company requires a full-time executive in the position. Here’s a bevy of key data…
➤ Practitioners report absorbing new duties, with 65% managing AI strategy and governance, 48% handling public relations, and 46% overseeing entertainment partnerships. Gartner data indicates marketing budgets increased by just 1.3% over 2025 levels, creating friction as 79% of surveyed leaders feel they face shorter timelines to prove results compared to other executives.
➤ The demands contribute to high turnover, driving the average CMO tenure down to 4.3 years according to Spencer Stuart. Expectations surrounding artificial intelligence further complicate the job, with 66% of respondents citing pressure to appear "AI-first" even when the tools do not improve creative output. Said Differently CEO and former GE Chief Marketing and Communications Officer Linda Boff argued that brands must retain dedicated leadership: "I firmly believe the role of the CMO is critical in the organization. To be the keeper of the flame, the consistent voice who is representing what that brand means, and how to grow that brand is nobody's part-time job." (link)
➤ Reporting in Digiday, Sam Bradley highlights broader shifts across executive leadership where Forrester data reveals only 36% of Fortune 500 companies still utilize the traditional CMO title—down from 55% in 2024—while 46% of chief marketers report to someone other than the CEO. Additionally, Gartner data indicates marketing spend as a share of revenue flatlined at 7.8% this year compared to 11.2% in 2018, sharpening C-suite friction over performance timelines.
➤ CMO Huddles CEO Drew Neisser contextualizes: “Companies want marketing leaders to fix growth, reposition the business, build demand, sharpen the brand, align sales and prove impact fast. But the data is screaming that too many CMOs are being handed transformation-sized mandates on trial-period timelines. That is not just hard on CMOs. It is expensive and self-defeating for companies.” (link)
Meanwhile, workers in the technology and advertising sectors are increasingly adopting the "marketing engineer" job title to describe roles bridging artificial intelligence automation and traditional brand strategy, The Wall Street Journal's Katie Deighton observes. LinkedIn data shows postings for the position increased 29% last year, while Live Data Technologies tracked 173 professionals starting the role over the past 12 months, up from 98 the prior year. Companies like Figma and blockchain platform Optimism—which automated 80% of its marketing output under Head of Growth Marketing Greg Bresnitz—are actively recruiting the hybrid positions to build AI agents for competitor analysis and personalized advertising. Profound, an AI marketing platform that recently raised $180M at a $1.8B valuation, is backing the trend through a dedicated job board and hackathon, and Co-Founder James Cadwallader says: "Marketing is non-verifiable by nature—it’s very hard to verify if something is good or bad. You’re always going to have to have a human being that acts as the orchestrator, as the adjudicator, to determine what the agents should build." (link)
Finally, marketing leaders are overhauling organizational structures, workflow documentation, and talent development to integrate artificial intelligence while meeting heightened commercial demands, according to Ad Age's Adrianne Pasquarelli. At Ad Age’s Business of Brands conference, executives from 37Arc, Boston Consulting Group, Culligan, Raines International, and Very Plants outlined plans to establish brand intelligence layers, automate routine reporting, and shift junior staff toward high-value growth initiatives. To Raines International Managing Director/CMO Lisa Mann, the modern market mandate is redefining executive accountability: "We are going from a brand steward to a chief growth architect. The job is broader, more commercial, more tech-driven, and more accountable than ever. Growth is the absolute job description." (link)
🎙️ Toledo AD Tom Moreland Outlines Revenue Growth on NACMA Podcast
Toledo Vice President and Director of Athletics Tom Moreland joined Fairfield AVP/Deputy AD Zach Dayton on the latest edition of the NACMA Timeout Podcast to share his strategy for driving commercial growth from the AD chair. Key takeaways…
➤ Prioritizing proactive, outbound sales and development staffs, mirroring professional sports front offices, to build deep, one-on-one relationships rather than relying on passive fan affinity.
➤ Highlighting his experience as one of the industry's first CCOs to demonstrate the effectiveness of placing all mass-facing revenue areas (ticketing, fan experience, corporate partnerships) under a single, unified leader.
➤ Leveraging Northwest Ohio's 1.7 million population base by aggressively investing in staffing and technology, projecting significant ROI over the next two-to-three sales cycles to lead the MAC in ticket sales and annual fund growth.
LEARNINGS: NEW NHL SEASON
The NHL is launching a "Hot for Hockey" marketing campaign for the 2026-27 season to capitalize on the female viewership surge driven by adaptations of hockey romance novels like "Heated Rivalry" and "Off Campus," according to SBJ's Alex Silverman. NHL CMO Sean Eggert, who joined the league from Under Armour in May, is steering the rollout of 60-to-90-second audio stories written and narrated by popular genre authors that reframe real-life hockey storylines into the romance style. The initial installments feature Golden Knights center Jack Eichel and Hurricanes center Sebastian Aho, targeting a demographic that Circana reports purchased 51M print romance books over a 12-month span ending in June 2025 and generates roughly 16M annual sports romance audio downloads. Eggert says the strategy relies on influential BookTok creators to convert literary engagement into live game viewership, adding: "This is an audience that picks up this tonality in a really meaningful way and is going to have a younger cohort lean in and start to share and hopefully take action. I think everything that we’re trying to do is to evoke an emotion and a reaction from a consumer in a positive way to attend and watch." (link)
House of Strauss publisher Ethan Strauss criticizes the NHL's "Hot for Hockey" marketing campaign, arguing that league executives are misinterpreting viewership growth to pursue a romance-novel demographic. While NHL CMO Sean Eggert attributes a 164% jump in female playoff audience on ESPN to a "romantasy" trend, Strauss cites Bernstein audience data showing that older viewers (P55+) flocking to traditional broadcast television following the NBA's move to Amazon Prime actually drove the ratings spike. Strauss warns that pivoting promotional strategy toward niche internet trends like "BookTok" risks alienating the league's established fanbase: "The Bernstein data dive revealed that the major explosion in NHL viewership came from P55+. As in, persons aged 55 and older. That’s definitely not the demographic the NHL craves. ... Reaching new audiences, with an entirely different message, really does run the risk of undermining your value proposition to core consumers. One actually does come at the expense of the other.” (link)
The Las Vegas Golden Knights will celebrate their 10th season with a comprehensive business overhaul under President of Business Operations John Penhollow, according to SBJ's Alex Silverman, who notes the changes include altering ticketing operations and launching a new broadcast partnership with Beasley Media Group. The franchise reclaimed arena control by removing resellers who previously held 25% of T-Mobile Arena inventory, driving a 19% YoY increase in new season-ticket sales despite full-season equivalents dropping by roughly 1,000. COO Rich Wang noted the club also capitalized on fan feedback to boost partial plan sales by 84% while shifting focus toward community group sales, and Silverman notes the Knights also rolled out a new YinzCam-developed mobile app integrating AXS ticketing to streamline access to a $5 locals menu. (link)
Black Box Wines became the NHL's first official corporate partner in the wine category under a multiyear U.S. sponsorship agreement with E. & J. Gallo Winery. Activation will center on an at-home viewing platform called Wine Wednesdays spanning digital, social, and retail channels, alongside a presence at league tentpole events and digitally enhanced dasher boards. The NHL cited female fan growth as a primary driver for the partnership, with ESPN recording an average female postseason audience of 786K per game—a 164% increase over 2025—and Wine Market Council data indicating women account for 54% of U.S. wine consumers. The deal gives Gallo, which sells 90M cases annually, league-level partnerships across three major men's sports leagues alongside Barefoot (NFL) and Mark West (MLB) to market Black Box offerings ranging from $4.99 singles to $19.99 3-liter boxes. THE YIELD GAME
Law firm Bochetto & Lentz is threatening legal action on behalf of Philadelphia Eagles season ticket holders and tailgaters over new parking rules and rate hikes at the stadium complex, The Philly Voice's Molly McVety reports. Comcast Spectacor's Sports Complex Parking Venture introduced regulations directing oversized vehicles to designated lots near Xfinity Mobile Arena and Lot N while banning drop-offs and companion standard-sized cars. Prepaid passes cover four spots with options to add two more for $100 each, while drive-up oversized parking rates doubled from $100 to $200. Lead attorney George Bochetto: "This is not simply about where a vehicle is parked. It is about whether a private parking operator can unilaterally disrupt longstanding traditions, restrict fans' access and impose an extraordinary new financial burden on the very people who have supported Philadelphia sports for decades. ... The Sports Complex Parking Venture should not be permitted to suddenly corral those fans into a single lot and then gouge them by charging nearly twice as much for the privilege. We intend to go to court and stop it." (link)
The Baltimore Orioles are renovating the left field upper deck space at Camden Yards to create a more social setting that features a standing room area with field views, a drink rail and F&B offerings, per SBJ’s MIke Mazzeo, who notes the “space is set to open at the start of the 2027 season. It will require the removal of around 2,000 seats, with the new estimated capacity of the ballpark being 40,234. It will be accessible to all fans with tickets on gamedays. On non-gamedays, it will be available to be rented out for private events. The team’s construction partner on the project is Gilbane, with Populous doing the design.” (link)
The Chicago Fire are commencing sales for 600 luxury seats at the under-construction $750M McDonald's Park, which features 4,500 total premium seats within its 22,000-capacity layout. Six months into sales, the club has sold 45% of its suites—with top-tier options pricing between $450-600K annually under 10-year commitments selling fastest—prompting an early soft launch that has already claimed 20% of the luxury seat inventory. The venue's most exclusive offering, the 80-ticket invite-only Chairman's Club, costs $25K per seat annually for access to all events, while 320 west-sideline seats feature a player-pathway speakeasy club and 200 loge box seats start at $10K annually. Fire President of Business Operations Dave Baldwin tells SBJ’s Bret McCormick: “We’ve been really impressed with the support from local companies and individuals who are civic leaders. Maybe not the biggest soccer fans but they recognize the level of luxury that’s going to be at McDonald’s Park. It’s going to be a who’s who of Chicago.” (link)
Fulham has expanded its waterfront Fulham Pier hospitality development adjacent to Craven Cottage with the addition of Sæl Spa, a four-level private members' wellness club along the Thames. The facility aims to drive repeat non-matchday revenue beyond the football calendar, featuring a 15-meter heated rooftop infinity pool, a spa penthouse for contrast therapy, a waterfront sauna, recovery-focused dining at The Pantrī, fitness studios, and private treatment rooms. The wellness club joins Fulham Pier Hotel, Lighthouse Social, Brasserie Constance, Flo Bar, and Riverside Market as part of the venue's commercial model, though the spa facility closes on Fulham home matchdays. (link)
Meanwhile, FC Barcelona is launching a new long-term individual VIP seat licensing model at Spotify Camp Nou in partnership with Legends Global, transitioning into a new commercialization phase for its hospitality portfolio. Following an initial phase that generated over €380M in committed revenue across nearly 5,000 sold seats alongside fully booked suites and boxes, the club is making its remaining 2,000 VIP seats available through 15- and 30-year contracts with upfront payments. The club expects to market the inventory over two and a half seasons, projecting approximately €700M in committed revenue over the duration of the contracts to exceed initial financial forecasts for the Espai Barça project.
