A Dallas County judge has issued a 14-day temporary restraining order against the NCAA, the SEC, and Commissioner Greg Sankey to block restrictions preventing plaintiffs from participating in the 2026-27 season based on exhausted eligibility. The Athletic’s Chris Vannini explains the ruling marks the first time an individual conference has been subjected to a major injunction, legally permitting more than 40 plaintiffs—including NFL rookies like Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Wesley Bissainthe and Dallas Cowboys receiver Jordan Hudson—to return to college rosters. The mandate, Vannini adds, undermines the universal bans quickly established by the Power Four earlier this week while forcing the NCAA to re-open the transfer portal for the specific group of athletes. The ruling explicitly states that “it is the Court’s intention to place Plaintiffs in the position they were in at the end of their last college sports season. As long as they would have been eligible to continue playing college sports in the following semester if they had a fifth year of eligibility, they are eligible today.” (link)
The Big East will not follow other conferences in establishing a rule barring pro athletes from returning to their schools, according to NJ.com’s Adam Zagoria, who reports: “In a Zoom meeting between league officials and athletic directors from the 11 Big East schools, a decision was made to stick with the ‘status quo’ and ‘monitor the situation and see how it plays out,’ one source said.” (link)
The Mountain West issued the following statement regarding football eligibility: “Consistent with NCAA eligibility standards, the Mountain West Board of Directors has unanimously adopted a conference rule prohibiting professional athletes from competing in the sport of football. Under the rule, a student-athlete shall be ineligible to represent a Mountain West institution in football if the individual: declares for a professional sports league draft and does not timely withdraw; appears on the roster of a professional sports league; or signs a contract with a professional sports league to provide athletic services. Any student-athlete who meets one or more of these criteria shall be deemed ineligible for football competition at a Mountain West member institution.” (link)
According to Puck's John Ourand, the ongoing eligibility dispute involving LSU attempting to roster former NFL players Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris is accelerating momentum for the Protect College Sports Act on Capitol Hill. Sources indicate to Ourand that the PCSA currently has enough votes to pass the Senate, though House action remains unlikely before the November elections. Proponents argue the standoff provides the necessary leverage to finally establish a unified national framework with antitrust protection, with one lobbyist who supports the PCSA telling Ourand: "This has galvanized the SEC, and even the Big Ten, to pass a bill, as imperfect as it might be." Another lobbyist who supports the bill adds: “Lawyers are now lining up to sue the SEC instead of the NCAA. I mean, it’s just a mess. Everybody should want some acceptable guidelines and guardrails on what you can and can’t do. Let’s just have one rule that’s enforceable and has liability protection from the federal government.” (link)
American Conference Commissioner Tim Pernetti joined the Canzano & Wilner podcast to explain the conference's commercial strategy and how the Group of Six is actively lobbying Congress to pass the Protect College Sports Act. Key notes…
➤ Establishing unified Group of Six leadership to drive systemic change: "The idea of competing on the field doesn't need to be competing in the boardroom. ... A healthy group of six and a healthy American conference for that matter are good for college football. Why? They play us on the field, they're building their rosters with our student athletes, and they're recruiting our coaches to be their leaders."
➤ Adjusting the regular-season football calendar to accommodate an expanded postseason: "Let's have a uniform start date for the season, which next season is going to be week zero. ... It gives us multiple bites at the apple with college football before the NFL starts playing, which is great for television and for exposure and also gives the ability to build multiple buy weeks in."
➤ Pushing lawmakers to pass the legislation without overcomplicating the mandate: "This bill that first came out in May looks very different now than it did in May. I would argue that it's better, but I think what we have to be careful of is boiling the ocean because the more requests you take to make modifications that may be in the interest of some and not all could send things off the rails." The Kansas Athletics Board of Directors approved a FY27 budget with a $13.2M deficit as the department navigates athlete revenue sharing and ongoing renovations at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. KU projects the $2.6M YoY improvement will lead to a break-even point in 2028 before generating sustainable profits in 2029. Jayhawks CFO Pat Kaufman on how the university will utilize those future returns: "Build our reserves back up that we depleted these last few years, it’ll allow us to repay the line of credit we’ve taken out and grow this department again." To offset a $10.1M jump in overall expenses—which includes a $5.2M athlete compensation surge that maxes out the university's revenue-sharing cap—the budget relies on a $12.7M bump in variable revenue driven by jersey patch sponsorships and the Union Jack Classic matchup against Arizona State. Jayhawks AD Travis Goff estimates the matchup in London will generate roughly $2.5M in profit, yielding $1M more than a standard home game during the current construction phase. (link)
The Minnesota Star Tribune’s Chip Scoggins examines St. Thomas’ direct jump from Division III to DI, positing the school signed up for something much different than the “cauldron of chaos” it found upon arrival. With the Tommies beginning their second year of being eligible to compete in postseason tournaments, AD Phil Esten noted the “stratification in Division I is craziness” with St. Thomas’ yearly athletic budget reportedly “less than 10% of what Ohio State spends.” Esten: “Let’s be honest with ourselves. We’re not trying to win the Big East. We’re not trying to win the Big Ten. We’re not trying to win the SEC. We’re trying to win the Summit League, or the conferences [Tommies football and hockey] are in. … I’m bullish enough to think that we can compete across the board in most of our sports for conference championships. And I don’t think we need the most of everything to do so.” (link)
West Georgia initiated an independent external review and reported a compliance violation involving a football student-athlete to the NCAA and the United Athletic Conference. As a corrective, self-imposed measure, Football HC Steve Englehart did not participate in Thursday’s opener against Chattanooga. UWG President Michael Johnson: "When we identified the issue, we didn't make excuses. We took responsibility." Wolves AD Jason Carmichael adds: "In working through this matter, Coach Englehart has consistently demonstrated professionalism, transparency and a commitment to doing what is in the best interest of our student-athletes and the university." At this point, UWG “has found no evidence that any member of Athletics staff knowingly attempted to circumvent NCAA bylaws.” (link)
Now this is cool: Idaho Director of Video Production Richard Pathomsiri commissioned senior fine arts student Emma Cuddy to reimagine the football program's digital game-week posters by producing 12 original, 18-by-20 inch oil paintings throughout the upcoming season. The Athletic's Ira Gorawara notes the initiative debuted ahead of Friday's season opener against Cal Poly, featuring quarterback Joshua Wood gripping a spear on a California beach alongside wild mustangs, a piece that required roughly 30 hours of meticulous brushwork. The university will photograph each completed canvas to distribute digitally before auctioning the original artwork, with Cuddy retaining a cut of the final sale. Pathomsiri on trusting the slow, methodical creative process to cut through digital fatigue: "What you need to do is try to put football players in situations that seem bigger than life. ... There are people out there that can capture so much feeling and invoke so much inspiration in you." (link)
Keystone Sports and other international college athlete placement agencies face growing obstacles as federal visa restrictions and tighter roster limits threaten their business models, according to Sportico's Daniel Libit. The subsidiary of Oslo-based Keystone Education Group charges foreign athletes up to $10K to navigate the U.S. collegiate pipeline, an avenue disrupted by a 10% drop in international student applications and the NCAA's five-year eligibility mandate. The industry is also dealing with the Department of Homeland Security's four-year cap on F-1 student visas, which forced Keystone Sports executive Gonzalo Corrales to scramble for emergency embassy appointments for 350 clients in July. University of Kentucky assistant professor Simran Kaur Sethi notes these pressures incentivize firms to misrepresent the college sports landscape to prospective families: "Some of them are really telling parents that there isn’t any issue on college campuses, so your son or daughter is going to be fine, because universities are their own bubble. Living in America, we know that isn’t true—but agencies don’t live in America. However, they’ve got to keep their business going." (link)
Utah State launched One Aggie Studio, a centralized multimedia initiative designed to consolidate departmental storytelling to elevate brand engagement and bolster recruiting efforts. The platform features the new Aggies All-Access Podcast hosted by play-by-play voice Scott Garrard, which debuts with Aggies AD Cameron Walker serving as the inaugural guest. USU plans to roll out a comprehensive digital content hub later in the 2026-27 academic year to house all long-form features and behind-the-scenes video content under one unified banner. The ACC Board of Directors has unanimously adopted a resolution directing Commissioner Jim Phillips to enforce certain eligibility requirements when an athlete seeks to return to collegiate participation after intentionally pursuing a professional career. Under the resolution, a league member institution is not permitted to include an individual on its football or men’s or women’s basketball roster when that individual has: previously declared for an NFL, NBA or WNBA Draft, and did not appropriately withdraw consistent with NCAA requirements to retain eligibility; signed a contract with the NFL (or other professional football league), NBA/G-League, WNBA (or affiliate) or any team that is a member of any such league. For the NBA Summer League, a contract means an Exhibit 10, a Two-Way Contract or any agreement providing for compensation beyond expenses and a per diem; or been listed on any roster for an NFL (or other professional football league), NBA/G-League, or WNBA (or affiliate) team. (link)
CBS’ Jon Rothstein reports “the Big East will meet with its member institutions later today to discuss its eligibility standards moving forward.” (link)
The College Football Playoff might soon join the parade of rule-makers prohibiting professional athletes from returning to play in college, according to Ross Dellenger, who writing for On3, notes playoff leaders touched on the subject of CFP participation rules back in June during the aftermath of the Texas Tech-Brendan Sorsby fiasco. Some industry leaders believe the CFP should adopt a policy disqualifying a program from postseason competition if it rosters a professional player. Dellenger adds: “In fact, CFP leaders are expected to meet soon on a call where this topic and others will be discussed. Imagine that the NCAA, power conferences and the College Football Playoff each have a rule banning pro athletes. Some may call that collusion. Others may call it wise. Even others would say that it ushers in more lawsuits, that the CFP would be cracking the door — like the SEC and Big Ten, too — of being a defendant in the next wave of eligibility challenges. Would a state or federal judge grant an injunction on three levels — the NCAA, conference and CFP — to permit pro athletes to play in college?” (link)
The 33 players who secured a TRO in Louisiana’s 19th District aren’t backing down after the SEC’s passage of a ban on pro players returning to college. Per LouisianaSports.net’s Matt Moscona, District Attorney Tony Clayton feels the league is in violation of Louisiana law. “There’s an injunction in place that prohibits the same conduct that they just passed. … I think [Commissioner Greg Sankey] ought to be forced to come down here in Louisiana court and explain to us how he can overrule a Louisiana judge. It’s violative of these players’ rights.” Clayton also mentioned he will test Sankey’s retained right to enforce additional punishment beyond the league’s outlined criteria. “I believe that 3605 of our code of evidence law states emphatically that, the NCAA, its employees, its affiliates, its members, the whole nine yards are prohibited from taking any actions to hurt these kids. And what Sankey has done is a complete violation of state law.” Judge William Jordan will oversee the preliminary injunctive hearing in Baton Rouge on Monday and, if granted in the players’ favor, Clayton believes all of the plaintiffs in the suit should be granted the opportunity to play without penalty. (link)
Public outcry over the issue of pro athletes attempting to return to college sports is reportedly providing a boost to efforts to pass the Protect College Sports Act, per Semafor’s Burgess Everett. NCAA spokesman Tim Buckley said the “outrage” over the topic has “really changed some minds on Capitol Hill about the need for this legislation” and could help shore up support. “The events over the past week have been helpful to help us drive home the point. You don’t need to take our word for it or the conference’s word for it. This piece of legislation gives senators the ability to fix this problem for their constituents.” With Senators having pushed back the legislation’s consideration until September, Everett posits the delay might just improve the bill’s fortunes by helping it accrue 60 votes as the pro player controversy builds. Buckley adds: “The polls are really clear about this and you don’t need to be a political genius to understand it is wildly unpopular … to use college sports as a fallback.” (link)
Florida State AD Michael Alford joined the Front Row Noles/Seminole Sidelines podcast to discuss revenue allocation, his evaluation process for jersey patch sponsorships and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ On evaluating FSU’s competitive roster spend relative to national peers: "There's a group that is up there [in roster spend], I'm talking seven schools, eight schools that are different. Then underneath that, there's another group of peers. That's where we are, being competitive within that field and able to compete. When I go through our schedule, in my mind, I'm kind of looking, ‘okay, we're more than them. We're more than them. … We're right with them’ and then go through the list. And that's something that I talk to various ADs across the country, talk to agents, just getting a real idea of where people are and sharing that information, and we’re supporting as much as we can.”
➤ As for FSU’s commercial partnership strategy and securing the ReliaQuest men’s basketball jersey patch: "You run your evaluations, I call it your CPIs, your cost per impression. You're doing the math of what your value is and we know what our value is. When we talk to various companies, and we've had offers that I have literally just said, ‘It's not where I think our value is. I'm not going to discount it that much or negotiate it down that much.’ … We have an offer on the table right now, that I'm going through an evaluation on, for some of our sports. It's a constant something that we're looking at." (link)

BYU has officially restructured its athletic department, splitting football off from the Cougars’ other 20 sports, per The Deseret News’ Dick Harmon and Tad Walch, who note gridiron HC Kalani Sitake will now report directly to university Advancement VP Keith Vorkink, while AD Brian Santiago will oversee the remaining programs. Coming just nine days before the football season opener, the decision underscored both the “hurtling rate of change in college sports and rumors about friction between Sitake and Santiago.” The sudden disruption comes approximately a month after Sitake, without naming names or making specific requests, publicly called for additional football investment to help the team get over the hump and into the CFP. Vorkink: “It is crucial to remember that everything we do in athletics at BYU to compete in this dynamic, ever-changing landscape, will be done in a way that aligns the athletic department with the mission of the university. That is always our overarching objective.“ More. (link)
Playfly has released its inaugural Audience Power Rankings, predicting Ohio State, Texas and Georgia will finish as college football’s most-watched regular season teams, while forecasting that 20% of the preseason AP Top 25 will fail to crack the 25 most-viewed schools list. Powered by Nielsen audience data spanning 2,400 games alongside Vision Insights fan base sizing, the predictive model excludes conference championships, postseason play and unmeasured networks like SEC Network, ACC Network and CBS Sports Network.
➤ Overall, the analysis projects Nebraska, Florida, Auburn, Clemson and Florida State to crash the top 25 viewership rankings despite SMU, Utah, Iowa, Houston and Louisville holding down preseason AP ranks. Per SBJ’s Austin Karp, the data also forecasts Washington (+12 spots), BYU (+9) and Texas Tech (+9) as the season's biggest risers comparable to their 2025 viewership rank, while FSU (-8), Oklahoma (-6) and Florida (-5) will witness the largest declines.
➤ Historical data from the study underscores a massive power disparity as Big Ten and SEC programs accounted for 97 of the top 25 viewership spots over the past five years despite making up only 75 of the preseason AP Top 25 selections – whereas Big 12 and ACC teams occupied 40 preseason ranking spots but yielded just 22 top 25 viewership finishes.
➤ Playfly Head of Insights Gregg Liebman: “There are few, if any, rankings that are really dear to the B2B sports business marketplace, which is what marketers and rightsholders should care about. It’s really about the strength and value of these brands and how that translates to viewership, which often translates to revenue through patches and other assets.” (link)
