Edition #95

August 28, 2026

Pepperdine and Playfly Sports, the sports industry’s leading revenue maximization company, announced an expansion of their strategic partnership, with Playfly selected to lead outbound athletic ticket sales for The Mountain at Mullin Park, Pepperdine’s new on-campus arena scheduled to open December 2026. Are aggressive ticket price hikes maximizing your revenue, or just forcing your core fans to finally question what their loyalty is actually worth?

That’s the core question framing the newest CRO.ticker. Here are three key takeaways from today’s edition:

The Danger of Dynamic Pricing: While sports properties leverage unprecedented demand to push aggressive ticket hikes and accelerated renewals, blindly relying on dynamic pricing threatens to alienate core fans who are beginning to weigh the true ROI of their fandom against the cost of attendance.

De-Risking Revenue with Fan Experience: Because organizations cannot control on-field performance, commercial leaders are pivoting away from the product on the grass. Instead, they are hyper-focusing on frictionless game-day logistics, digital navigation, and sheer entertainment to drive sustainable revenue even during losing seasons.

The ROI of Untouched Tradition: While modern sports properties constantly try to reinvent the fan experience every 18 months, the US Open’s commercial dominance proves that massive hospitality revenue often stems from the discipline of building a signature tradition and leaving it entirely alone.

PACKAGING PASSION

Maryland Deputy AD/CRO Joe LaBue joined PressBox Sports and talked about the need to enhance the game-day fan experience to drive sustainable revenue independent of on-field performance. Key takeaways…

Prioritizing the fan experiece to establish revenue consistency: "I can't come to work every single day and be like, 'Well, I’ve got to hope we win nine or 10 games on the football field this year.' ... We've taken the approach of fan experience. ... How do we make that better? So, there's been a lot of intentional work over the last 12 months in terms of trying to figure out what are some easy wins, what are some things that we can do differently to drive fan experience?”

Overhauling game-day logistics and digital navigation: "If that's your first impression of a game day, just something as easy as getting to the stadium. ... You can go to our app now. We've got an interactive map that'll take you from leaving your driveway to getting into College Park. Once you’re in the stadium, whether it’s SECU or Xfinity or any of our facilities, where do I get this specific concession item? … We know we’re not going to get a ton of feedback saying this is unbelievable, but what we’re not going to get is maybe some people complaining about it on Monday morning.”

Rebranding the student section to drive engagement: "We're launching the Terp Tank in Section 16. It is a total high-energy section. ... We have a dunk tank. We're going to be dunking people. ... It's creating that passionate place and your kids see it and you're like, 'Yeah, I want to be a part of it.'"

On expanding the university's footprint into Baltimore: "We can't say we're the flagship university of this state [without] being intentional about understanding there's an entire state outside of PG County. ... The roots in Baltimore, not only from alumni, fans, student-athletes...it's a special relationship." (link)

Keurig Dr Pepper launched the ninth season of its college football-themed "Fansville" campaign, partnering with agency Deutsch to release over 200 localized assets designed to mock the sport's chaotic reality, according to Marketing Dive’s Chris Kelly. The campaign heavily features controversial LSU Football HC Lane Kiffin, capitalizing on his dramatic departure from Ole Miss last December by staging a scene where he is pulled over by former Oklahoma linebacker Brian Bosworth for an "illegal lane change." Kelly notes the campaign drives significant commercial returns, with CEO Tim Cofer recently pointing out it generated over double the sales lift and a 30% higher incremental return on ad spend compared to the national average. KDP SVP of Brand Marketing Derek Dabrowski on the strategy behind tapping into the sport's inherent theatricality: "[Kiffin] understands that college football is at least as much about entertainment as it is about competition. What makes people like that awesome is they generate conversation, and that’s what we’re trying to do as well." Dabrowski also highlighted how the marketing team utilizes artificial intelligence and first-party data to hyper-target consumers across 50 different markets: "We can stay efficient and get greater ROI through precision at scale and dynamic creative optimization. Ten to 20 years ago, this was a [fantasy] that we can actually capitalize and make real now." (link)

Coca-Cola revived its "Fan Work Is Thirsty Work" marketing platform ahead of the fall football season, launching an integrated campaign featuring a 74-stop campus tour and personalized packaging across 13 college and 12 professional teams. The company expanded the initiative to emphasize grassroots social engagement, partnering with digital creators at specific universities while launching its inaugural integration with Yahoo Sports College Fantasy Football. The campaign—developed by WPP's bespoke Open X unit alongside agencies like VML and Ogilvy—mirrors the hyper-localized strategy Coca-Cola successfully deployed during the recent World Cup, which generated over 9B social views and propelled the brand to a 5% quarterly volume spike. Marketing Dive’s Peter Adams notes the targeted collegiate push allows the brand to aggressively capture the college football market while chief rival Pepsi maintains its official partnership with the NFL. WHAT’S FANDOM WORTH

Demand for Premier League season tickets remains exceptionally high, with all 20 top-flight clubs operating waiting lists despite 14 organizations raising prices for the 2026-27 campaign. Coventry City executed the highest hike at 16%, while Ipswich Town increased prices by up to 14% and Everton jumped 7.2%. Five clubs—Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest, and Tottenham Hotspur—froze their prices entirely, mirroring a similar trend from last season. Eight clubs pushed their most expensive non-hospitality offerings past the £1,000 ($1,364) threshold, led by Fulham's £3,192 ticket in the Riverside Stand and Tottenham's £2,223 package. Liverpool faced massive fan backlash over proposed Consumer Price Index-based hikes, ultimately forcing ownership to cap this year's increase at 3% and guarantee a price freeze for the 2027-28 season. Season ticket sales represent a relatively small portion of overall club turnover, though match-day income accounts for 24% of total revenue at Manchester United and 22.4% at Tottenham, highlighting the financial reliance on massive, modernized venues to maximize premium inventory. Demand for the Indiana Fever continues to skyrocket during the Caitlin Clark era, driving significant season ticket price hikes ahead of the 2027 WNBA campaign despite the organization pushing back on reports of a massive blanket increase. While social media circulation suggested an average 21% markup for the upcoming season, Pacers Sports and Entertainment Chief Revenue Officer Barry Gibson countered that nearly 90% of legacy accounts will experience just a 0% to 6% base increase. The total package cost will inevitably rise for all buyers due to the league adding three additional home games to the schedule, forcing fans to absorb the expanded inventory. Individual buyers entering the market recently face much steeper financial hurdles, as fans who purchased full-season packages during Clark's rookie year are reporting increases ranging from 12.7% to 33%—pushing some standard two-seat packages from $2,400 to $3,200. The franchise is aggressively capitalizing on the unprecedented consumer momentum by accelerating its renewal timeline, forcing buyers to commit by the end of August rather than the traditional November deadline to secure their seats. The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing intense fan backlash over single-game ticket pricing, with average get-in costs ranging from $150 to $270 despite the team finishing with the fifth-worst record in the NHL last season. MLSE (Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment) maintains the overall 2% price increase sits below national inflation, but the organization's reliance on dynamic pricing pushed standing-room tickets for the home opener against the Montreal Canadiens to $268, while obstructed-view seats for a Tuesday game against Utah command $127. MLSE SVP of Communications Dave Haggith argues that “dynamic pricing...gives fans a range of price options, with higher prices for the most in-demand games and lower-priced tickets available for other games." Longtime MLSE exec/former Pacific FC Managing Director Paul Beirne: “The real question this pricing raises isn’t, ‘Are the Leafs too expensive?’ It’s, ‘What is my fandom worth, and what else could that money buy me right now?’ ... For a long time, there was no good answer to that second part. There is now." (link)

JohnWallStreet Founder Corey Leff on the latest edition of The Sports Advisers podcast brought together former Carolina Panthers CEO Nick Kelly, Next League Chief AI & Innovation Officer Shripal Shah, DIRIGO Advisory Founder John Brody and Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes to break down the commercial infrastructure behind the U.S. Open. The panel detailed the USTA's staggering $623M in 2024 revenue, noting that 90% of that capital stems from the two-week New York tournament. They also outlined the tension between maximizing premium hospitality at Arthur Ashe Stadium and fulfilling the organization's mandate to grow tennis nationally, warning against attempting to blindly replicate the New York spectacle in secondary markets like Cincinnati. Here’s what you need to know…

Shah on the overarching lesson behind the commercial dominance of the Grey Goose Honey Deuce cocktail: "The lesson's not in the cocktail. It's the discipline of leaving one thing alone for 19 years. It feels like every property these days wants to rebuild the fan experience every 18 months, and then people wonder why they don't have the traditions. Tradition is something that you don't change every 18 months."

Kelly on the hidden value of empowering corporate sponsors to drive hospitality: "80% of the fan experience is driven by the USTA. ... 20% of the fan experience, they rely heavily on their partners. Everything that Amex does, Chase does, Heineken, they create another elevated experience. ... Take less money potentially from one of your partners if they're willing to elevate the experience."

Crakes on the economic reality driving exorbitant secondary ticket markets: "The reason why there's this explosion of demand on secondary markets, both legal and illegal, is because it's a scarce resource that's being priced too low." (link)

PLAYING THE LONG GAME

NASCAR Executive Vice President and Chief Media and Revenue Officer Brian Herbst joined the Varsity podcast with Puck's John Ourand to detail how the racing series is navigating massive media consolidation during the second year of its $7.7B broadcast package. Herbst defended the decision to split the rights across five partners—Fox, NBC, Amazon Prime, TNT Sports, and Nexstar—explaining the fragmented approach is necessary to capture diverse audiences as traditional cable distribution declines. He also outlined the organization's three-tiered original content strategy, culminating in a heavy investment to support Paramount's upcoming Days of Thunder 2 production to attract casual fans. Takeaways…

"We've seen that our fans will follow if we're shifting from Fox or FS1 to Amazon, or from NBC and USA to TNT. The viewership numbers we’re doing on cable in 2026 are essentially the same numbers we were doing on cable in 2022, despite a declining universe. Did I think we would end up with five partners? I would not have taken that bet. But what we’ve seen is that when you have the promotional megaphone of five different media companies, we’re future-proofing our sport for the next generation of consumption.”

On the timeline for the next media rights negotiation window: "We need to prove ourselves to every media partner every day. Our report card is due in 2030. What we've historically done is a lot of industry reconnaissance in the year before our rights window comes up, so that would be 2029. Then 2030 is usually where it gets into formal negotiations."

Strategic value of supporting the Days of Thunder 2 production: "We've seen those types of moments cut through the typical loyal NASCAR audience and get people to sample the sport. It's probably been the biggest investment the company has made in the last four or five years." (link)

Former Apple Head of Retail Ron Johnson spoke with Retail Brew's Vidhi Choudhary ahead of the September release of his new book, Shop Different: How Retail Revealed Apple’s Genius. In the book, Johnson explores the foundational philosophy behind the launch of the Apple Store in the early 2000s and explains why physical brick-and-mortar locations remain essential despite the rapid acceleration of e-commerce. He also outlines how artificial intelligence will eventually transform the in-store consumer experience by hyper-personalizing retail interactions. Notable notes…

On the inability of artificial intelligence to replace the physical retail footprint: "AI is another new technology that will change how we shop, but it will not change where we shop. We will always rely on a combination of physical stores and other buying experiences. ... AI is a technology that will improve the physical store experience, and it will improve the digital experience. But I don’t think it’ll shift people from physical to digital or digital to physical."

Utilizing technology to cultivate hyper-personalized customer relationships: "The change I would make when people opt in is I would love to have a customer walk in the store and have every employee naturally know how they use their Apple products. ... Wouldn’t it be great if, when a customer walked in the store, I had interacted with that customer before, I got an alert on my phone that said, 'Ron’s back,' then you start to build a family among customers? It’s that ability to use technology to improve the human connection between the employee and the customer.” (link)

The NFL has announced that Fanatics will join DraftKings and FanDuel as official betting operators of the league. ESPN’s David Purdum: “The multiyear partnerships provide the sportsbooks with access to official league data, the ability to advertise during games and intellectual property rights for league and team marks and logos. As part of the deals, DraftKings, FanDuel and Fanatics will collaborate with the NFL on what types of bets are offered, intelligence sharing, advocacy efforts and responsible gambling initiatives. The league objects to bets tied to officiating and injuries or any wagers that can be knowable in advance or easily manipulated by a single person. Financial terms of the new deals were not disclosed.” (link)

Major brands like Starbucks, Trader Joe's, and Jack in the Box are increasingly using limited-edition physical collectibles to drive consumer traffic and generate organic social media content as value expectations shift. Marketing Brew’s Kristina Monllos notes Jack in the Box recently launched a line of "Jibbis" bag charms and glass sipper cups tied to its Philly cheesesteak Munchie Meal to celebrate its 75th anniversary, experimenting with both meal tie-ins and standalone merchandise sales. Jack in the Box VP of Brand Marketing Sheena Dougher explains the push to gamify the fast-food sector: "People want more for their money, and it goes beyond the food. They want experiences from brands. ... [The goal is to make it] a game where you’re on the hunt to collect, or make something extra rare that makes people so excited." Sway Group CEO Danielle Wiley on the downstream commercial benefits of physical product drops: "At the end of the day, you're gonna get all this content from nano and micros. ... I think anyone who can jump into this is going to because all these brands need just so much content right now." (link)
