Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger clarifies his reporting on the College Football Playoff’s extension with ESPN: “The ~$125M conferences gained from ESPN for CFP expansion is not additive as it replaces lost ticket/sponsorship revenue from conference champ games. All champ game media value was ~$225M + $125M of ticket/sponsorship = $350M.” (link)

Iowa State held an introductory press conference for freshly minted AD Jared Benko, who described his plans to adopt a professional front-office model to accelerate commercialization efforts, discover alternative revenue streams beyond traditional ticketing and philanthropy, how athletics works within the university ecosystem and more. Here’s what he had to say…

➤ "To compete at the highest level, we have the resources and we need to continue to create additional resources to be disciplined about how we invest them. ... We can't count on one or two revenue streams and expect them to keep up. We have to continue to grow all of them. Philanthropy, ticketing, premium partnerships, events, and even find new ones."

➤ Utilizing consumer data to construct enhanced fan profiles: "Historically, you know, a fan purchases a ticket and maybe you have a little bit of information. But what we've done in the past is start connecting, what are their concession purchases, what are their retail purchases, and you start building profiles of ways we can continue to enhance their experience."

➤ Balancing future infrastructure investments against revenue-sharing demands: "I think right now for a long time, you could, you know, you go back five, 10 years ago, you really could make facilities a priority. And we're gonna continue to make them a priority, but you've got to balance a little more than you did 5, 10 years ago." (link, link)

Utah AD Mark Harlan addressed his department’s media exposure, television scheduling, and operational initiatives during a media availability ahead of the No. 10 Utes' game against No. 14 Houston this weekend. Notable takeaways…

➤ On hosting ESPN College GameDay: "I think it’s remarkable. There’s not a lot of schools out there that have been able to host three of the last four years. There’s some in the Big Ten and SEC [that] would dream of that, but we’ve got it here at Utah."

➤ Early progress with Crimson Brand Partners (CBP): "I’m thrilled by the start. This is a journey, multiple-year journey. I think [CBP CEO] Matt Webb and his team have done a great job collaborating with all of us to really, what we said all along, is to create the best possible experience. We’re trying stuff at football. We’ll start seeing that in basketball. ... You’ll see the debut of the new north end zone field suites this weekend. ... They’re up to 70 people [employed]. We used to have 16 people on it."

➤ Venue renovation strategy leading into the 2034 Winter Olympics: "That’s a joint university and CBP investment, so it’s not $40M just from them. ... It’s a constant collaborative conversation, but it’s also starting to have conversations with the Olympic organizers too, right? ... as we look at our facilities going forward, we’re having multiple conversations to see if we can hit the mark." Austin Peay AD Jordan Harmon was asked about a potential move to FBS on the GovTalk podcast: “If the phone rings, you owe it to yourself to answer it, but you've got to be really good with where your feet are to even give yourself an opportunity to have any growth. … We really don't see a lot of desire and need to make that transition. I think we again have the ability to be really successful in the FCS, really successful in the mid-major ranks." (link)

Clemson shares a first look inside Brown Family Pavilion, the Tigers’ new $40M men’s basketball practice facility. Clemson Wire’s Drew Landon notes the facility “includes about 30,000 square feet of new construction and renovations to more than 51,000 square feet of existing space around Littlejohn Coliseum and Swann Pavilion. The Brown Family Pavilion houses the men's practice gym, team areas, and coaches' offices, while the women's program is receiving upgrades to its practice gym, offices, and recruiting spaces. Clemson also expanded the strength and conditioning, nutrition, and sports medicine areas shared by both programs.” (link)

UCLA reported an actual attendance of 36,045 for a 17-7 football victory over Wisconsin, highlighting a disconnect between the program's undefeated 6-0 record in the Big Ten and lagging fan engagement, The California Post’s Ben Bolch observes, noting the Rose Bowl turnout fell well below the program's 2014 average of 76,650, even with a top-10 national ranking, a promotional giveaway of 1,000 conductor hats, and secondary market tickets priced around the cost of a McDonald's Happy Meal. Football HC Bob Chesney addressed the fan base ahead of the final four home games: "I think for them, this should be the one to give them the confidence to understand just exactly who we are and where this thing is going. … I hope that we’re making people proud and I hope that they release the fear they might have of anything else and just support the hell out of it and enjoy this journey." LSU Football HC Lane Kiffin has soured on the tradition of field-storming, citing safety concerns as fans increasingly seek to record altercations with opposing personnel for social media. After LSU's 35-34 overtime loss to Kentucky, Kiffin complained that fans followed him off the field making obscene gestures while filming the encounter. The SEC currently enforces a $500K fine for rushing the field, but Kiffin questioned the efficacy of the penalty if universities view it as the acceptable cost of celebrating a major upset. Kiffin: "What we used to have was just fans having fun with each other and excited and going to try to find their team. And now that's not really the case, a lot of them, because everybody's got their phones and they all want their moment. So let us go see if we can get a coach or a player to say something back and run right into them and hold the phone in their face and all that. I think the reasoning for it has changed and what happens. So it's not really a safe event because of that." (link)

Louisville will raise a banner honoring its late longtime SID Kenny Klein during the Cardinals' Jan. 2 men's basketball game against Stanford at the KFC Yum! Center. Klein, a Sports Information Hall of Famer who spent over four decades with the Cardinals before his passing in June, coordinated statistics for 40 NCAA Final Fours and produced decades of university media guides. Cards AD Josh Heird: "Kenny Klein dedicated his career to telling the stories of Louisville’s greatest moments and the people who made them possible. He never sought the spotlight or recognition for himself, but there is no question that Kenny profoundly shaped the history and tradition of Louisville Basketball as we know it." (link)

St. John's is also honoring Klein throughout the 2026-27 season by keeping the seat next to Men's Basketball HC Rick Pitino empty and wearing a black "K.K." band on the team's jerseys. The New York Post’s Zach Braziller notes the Red Storm has also launched a new 10-member Ring of Honor, and Johnnies AD Ed Kull says the athletic department is now in discussions to officially retire player jersey numbers for the first time in program history. Pitino on Klein: "His wife is going to be with us both home and away, which is big for us. On a personal level, it’s been a really horrendous summer. Not since 9/11 have I felt so sad, losing a person right in front of you who I love so much. We’ll keep honoring him. I keep thinking of him. My heart breaks for his wife. I miss him terribly." How SMU Solved the Athlete Payment Problem Every Department Is About to Face

Paying athletes isn't what it was two years ago. Volume is up, compensation models vary by athlete and program, and the margin for compliance error keeps shrinking. Most departments are still running it on spreadsheets or old systems that were never built intentionally for the economics of modern college athletics.

SMU felt that shift directly, and did something about it. They brought NIL, revenue-share, stipends, bonuses, per diem, and even international edge cases into a single platform with Scout, with centralized administrative control and full transparency into every high-dollar transaction.

The result: streamlined payment execution across every program, real-time visibility into spend, stronger audit readiness, and a genuinely better experience for the athletes receiving the money. SMU is now positioned to scale athlete compensation for whatever the NIL era becomes next. They not only rec

That's the infrastructure question, and more programs will be asking it soon. The ones who answer it early won't be scrambling when the next phase arrives.

Now that a small group of college sports executives, spearheaded by SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti and Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua, has negotiated an agreement with ESPN to expand the College Football Playoff to 24 teams through 2031, Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger examines the most pressing issues brought about by the new format. Here’s what you need to know…

➤ On the CFP schedule, Dellenger: “Brace yourselves for something. There will be weeknight playoff games. Commissioners have discussed holding first- and second-round games on mid- to late-night weeks as to disperse the inventory and avoid the NFL.”

➤ As to why the leagues wanted to expand the CFP, Dellenger posits that this time, it wasn’t actually about the money, but rather access. “Whether you agree with it or not, schools are investing in their rosters to such a high degree — this year's top rosters are at or more than $40M — that administrators want more access into the postseason. There is a theory — though it may not prove true — that more access means more stability (i.e. coaches won't get fired so often and so early in a season if more of them can advance to the postseason). Proponents of expansion believe there is another benefit of moving to 24: regular season scheduling.”

➤ With P4 programs now required to play 10 games against power opponents to be CFP-eligible, how might this affect the regular-season slate? Dellenger: “The theory: Because teams can afford to lose as many as four games, they will schedule more difficult, big-brand matchups to increase television value, tickets sales and sponsorships. … That belief isn't held by all. Why would schools want to risk a loss, negatively impact their seeding and potentially even cost themselves a playoff spot? They wouldn't. Also, the conferences each now play nine league games. An 11th or even a 12th game against a power conference program leads to team fatigue that may impact future games. All of that said, conversations continue between the SEC and Big Ten over a long-discussed scheduling agreement. That goes for Notre Dame, too.”

➤ As to why the CFP didn’t test the market and what’s next for the committee: “The CFP did not have to re-sign with ESPN. But the network already had invested roughly $150-200M in ownership of the conference championship games (all but the Big Ten, which belongs to Fox). That means ESPN had a leg up on all other potential bidders. This also created complications. If the CFP decided to sell to another entity — Fox, Amazon, TNT, etc. — it may have meant more difficult negotiations with ESPN over breaking these league championship game contracts. Other complications existed too, such as ESPN's ownership of CFP sponsorship rights. It all led to CFP leaders deciding to stick with the network, despite some of them being against such a move. As for the CFP Selection Committee, the organization is undergoing an evaluation of the committee and its selection process.” (link)

Expanding the College Football Playoff to 24 teams will have a “seismic impact on bowl games,” per The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman, who opines the move threatens to reduce the available Power 4 inventory for the 35 bowl games currently operating outside the playoff structure. D1.takeaways…

➤ With no league tie-in contracts in place beyond 2026, and 12 former bowl teams soon to move into the expanded CFP, non-CFP games will face match-ups between teams with lower win totals, despite non-playoff broadcasts such as the Citrus Bowl (9.1M viewers in 2025), Pop-Tarts Bowl (8.7M viewers) and Pinstripe Bowl (7.6M viewers) generating strong ratings.

➤ While Liberty Bowl Executive Director Steve Ehrhart remains bullish on his postseason game, citing its title sponsor, stadium renovations and 150 local corporate partners as significant assets that would help it remain viable, Florida Citrus Sports CEO Steve Hogan cautioned that removing upper-tier programs will result in a significant number of cuts across non-playoff bowl inventory: "Certainly, there will be a significant impact to postseason opportunities outside of the Playoff. What that means, I don’t yet know. ... At least Christmas to New Year’s, you’re going to want to fill a Tuesday, a Wednesday, a Thursday. What has traditionally been our position has been to get a feature game on top of the New Year’s Six. There’s probably room for a few of those games to feature the best P2, P4 teams that are left. … When you talk to the media entities, they’re communicating the very important need for those in-between rounds to keep the enterprise healthy. The Group of 6 has a lot of real premium opportunities.” (link)

Reactions continue to pour in from across the media landscape regarding the proposed expansion of the College Football Playoff to 24 teams, as pundits weigh in on regular-season stakes, the consolidation of power within the SEC and Big Ten and what the decision portends. With so many different opinions – far too many to include in today’s Evening Standard – we’ve prepared this addendum to keep you fully informed on the national conversation. (link)

Little Rock AD Frank Cuervo agrees to a four-year contract extension, securing his leadership of the Trojans through the 2029-30 academic campaign. Chancellor Christina Drale: “Frank has brought tremendous leadership, energy and vision to Trojan Athletics. His commitment to our student-athletes, coaches, staff and the greater Little Rock community has helped move our department forward in meaningful ways. Frank and his team have established a strong foundation for continued growth. We are excited about what lies ahead for the Trojans under his leadership." (link)

James Madison has found an “unusual” method of easing the financial burden of its impending American move, per the Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen and Catie Harper, who note that as part of its invitation to enter on or before July 1, 2028, JMU is delivering new corporate sponsorship agreements directly to the league to cover its record $23M entrance fee. Key takeaways…

➤ AD Matt Roan somewhat reluctantly acknowledged that the concept was inspired, at least in part, by one of JMU's future conference mates, Memphis. “The FedEx strategy. We wanted to cast the net strategically, so it made sense to us knowing the smaller of the two numbers that was going to be covered by individuals was the exit fee. We could target Duke Club members and people who have time and time again supported us. We are also very fortunate we have some people associated with businesses who believed in this move and who the conference wants to do business with to meet the obligation there as well.”

➤ Rather than simply collecting an entrance fee from JMU, the American gains relationships with companies that could continue doing business with the conference after the Dukes' initial $23M obligation has been fulfilled. JMU President Jim Schmidt believes that potential was an important part of making the arrangement attractive to both sides. “I think that says a lot about the conference, that they realize they can develop long term relationships with the corporate partners we brought to the table. That goes way beyond the potential of covering our fees to join the conference.” (link)

Penn State’s recent “White Out” home attendance record of 114,419, set in the middle of a multi-year, $700M renovation of Beaver Stadium, exemplifies the anomaly that is PSU’s decision to buck industry trends by increasing rather than decreasing its stadium size, per SBJ’s Matt Fortuna. Driven by a base of 94K season-ticket holders, the university prioritized maintaining fan access over downsizing, resulting in a temporary capacity spike to 110,861 physical seats for 2026, up more than 6K seats YoY. The three-year project plans to incorporate 10,523 premium seats, including the Schuyler and Marzano clubs, accounting for roughly 10% of total capacity. PSU Deputy AD for Internal Operations Vinnie James: “We knew that we didn’t want to lose the fabric of what Beaver Stadium was and meant to this fan base for decades. … I think it ultimately came down to we knew what our fans were wanting in terms of different types of seating options, so we had to deliver some of that. Mostly, though, we had to maintain our capacity. That was the biggest driver in all of this. … It was really, really important to us that people had access to come to our games, and that we didn’t have too few seats here to accommodate what this fan base deserves.” (link)

Jacksonville State has received Board of Trustees approval to begin a $2.5M construction project at Jim Case Stadium to expand the right field wooden-bleacher section, currently occupied by “Cocky Corner,” into a 4,500-square-foot tiered deck to provide more student seating. Per The Chanticleer’s Danika Morton, the plan also includes a new 4,500-square-foot weight room for the baseball student-athletes, at the end of the current hitting facility along the right field line, that will house a small nutrition area as well as offices for strength and conditioning coaches and extra storage. In collaboration with builder Bradshaw and Pitts and Bill Whittaker Architecture, the tiered-deck proposal is being fast-tracked for completion by the start of the season in early February, while the weight room will be a nine-month effort that’s expected to conclude by August 2027. The $2.5M was fully gifted to the program and the board ensured it would not be an institutional project. (link)

Rhode Island plans to unveil its new outdoor track and field facility this Wednesday. The new complex features a nine-lane track; multiple jump runways, including two long/triple jump runways with four sand pits; two pole vault runways with four pole vault boxes; two high jump areas; a separate throws facility for combined hammer/discus, javelin and shot put; a 200-seat bleacher grandstand and press box; and a new digital-display scoreboard.
