Trying to Keep Up: Eligibility…
➤ Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports a “Louisiana judge has granted RJ Luis an injunction, paving the way for him to play for LSU this season. Luis, a member of 2022 class, went undrafted in 2025 NBA Draft and signed a 2-way contract with Utah [Jazz] and was traded to Boston [Celtics] before being waived.” (link)
➤ Former Georgia safety JaCorey Thomas plans to file a lawsuit seeking a TRO that would allow him to return to college and enter the transfer portal, per CBS’ Matt Zenitz, who notes Thomas took part in rookie minicamp with the Carolina Panthers. (link)
➤ Meanwhile, the SEC released the following statement following a videoconference of presidents and chancellors: “College athletes, not former professional athletes, have been at the heart of the Southeastern Conference. Individuals who choose to leave college athletics, sign professional playing contracts and compete professionally should not then be permitted to return to college competition. Allowing that to occur will blur the line between college and professional sports, create significant competitive equity concerns and reduce opportunities for high school and current college athletes. College sports are for college athletes. The current confusion around national eligibility standards emphasizes the need to advance the Protect College Sports Act.” (link)
➤ A Colorado state court has denied Colorado football student-athlete Ezra Christensen’s request for a preliminary injunction. (link)
Asked about NIL Standard’s recent rankings that evaluated Nebraska’s NIL at 29th nationally ($23.7M), good for ninth place in the 18-team Big Ten, Huskers AD Troy Dannen wouldn’t specifically comment on the rankings, per the Omaha World-Herald’s Tom Shatel, but did offer up a disclaimer. “The numbers that float around I can tell you are much more inaccurate than they are accurate. That’s how the market got out of whack. There’s no transparency. Sometimes you hear somebody did something, and no they didn’t. It’s agents floating numbers. There are all sorts of performance incentives. A million-dollar deal might actually be $200K but winning the Heisman Trophy makes it a million-dollar deal.” More…
➤ According to Dannen, generating revenue is the top item in his job description and doing things such as “making season ticket holders pay a donation to keep their seats for the postseason” or “‘reseating’ an arena or stadium based on donation levels” is a necessary part of doing business in today’s new college sports era. Dannen: “I will say I do almost feel like we spend more time apologizing for doing the job that athletics requires in 2026. If we don’t do our job, our future is severely limited. No one’s doing this because they like having people upset and calling and yelling and threatening. That’s not the way this is done. … Right now it’s time to turn it up. We didn’t do it because we didn’t have to. Today we have to. There’s a fine line. Depending on where you stand on that line, we either push across it or we don’t push far enough.” (link)
Florida State AD Michael Alford acknowledged the pressure on Football HC Mike Norvell to deliver on-field results after the athletic department and donors spent the previous two years aggressively funding the program's infrastructure. Despite amassing just seven combined wins over the past two seasons, the Orlando Sentinel’s Mike Bianchi points out that Seminole Boosters generated a record $106M in pledges during the recent fiscal year to fund roster acquisitions and the hiring of GM John Garrett. Alford on how he’ll evaluate Norvell: "I'll know it when I see it. ... I'm not going to establish hypothetical benchmarks, but Mike and all of our coaches know our expectations and what our fans expect. When you have provided the resources to be successful, there's more pressure and standards that you have to go out and compete on the field." (link)
More from Kansas State AD Gene Taylor during a conversation with the Boscoe’s Boys podcast. On introducing stadium-wide beer sales while retaining halftime exit and re-entry: "We have about anywhere from 6K to 7K fans leave at halftime. … We think there'll be less people go out because they know they can still have a beverage here, but at least we'll take the pressure off, at least for the first year, to let us learn where the pressure points are, where do we need to improve either facilities or restrooms. So, we're going to take this year to evaluate it. And if we think we can manage it by changing some things within the facility structure, then we may go next year, we may change the process. … We think as a conservative [estimate], it's going to net us an additional $500K to as much as $850K to possibly even higher." (link)
Cal Co-ADs Jay Larson and Jenny Simon-O'Neill highlight recent facility upgrades and commercial milestones as well as outline the strategy behind launching an internal media studio to drive corporate partnerships. Larson on establishing administrative alignment across the university: "It's obviously a transformational time in college athletics. ... For this to get done right, we need alignment from the chancellor to the ADs and the GM, the AD for football, the head coaches and extending into the community. And I think you're seeing that throughout the last year and beyond to create this great momentum for our department." Securing Dialpad as the official jersey patch sponsor: "We call it the perfect partnership when you combine all those things. The need for additional revenue and to have the UC Berkeley alum at Startup U, to have a founder and CEO of a tech-based company located in the Bay who believes in his alma mater and believes with what we're doing here in Cal athletics. You couldn't ask for a better partnership." (link)
CBS’ Brandon Marcello examined the financial stratification among football programs in the Big Ten, where teams like Ohio State and Oregon reportedly boast rosters exceeding $40M while others scramble to reach the $21.3M revenue-sharing floor. The disparity forces head coaches to alter on-field strategies and prioritize fundraising just to survive in a conference threatening to splinter into multiple financial tiers. Here’s what leaders across the league had to say…
➤ Ohio State AD Ross Bjork on the need to establish financial predictability: "Everybody in our industry, we're OK with costs increasing. But when you can't forecast that, and you have no certainty — people use the word cost containment. That's the wrong word. I want cost certainty."
➤ Illinois Football HC Bret Bielema on altering his defensive scheme: "The reason I had to make a change on defense was I couldn't afford to pay the numbers. I had already gone after an offensive line and had to put money out that I needed to get done for that, and then I knew I could buy, in a way, patch together a new defensive scheme that wouldn't require as big of players. But some of those big D-linemen, those guys are going for an ungodly amount of money, and you just can't have them at the number we were at."
➤ Wisconsin Football HC Luke Fickell on accepting the fundraising requirements of the role: "I don't love it. But you know what I hate a hell of a lot more? It's freaking losing and not being able to compete. And that drives me a hell of a lot more than not liking the money you got to raise or the amount of money you got to pay." (link)
Nonprofit news outlet CalMatters filed a lawsuit against UCLA this week to obtain information about how the university pays its student-athletes. CalMatters’ Adam Echelman explains: “Last fall, CalMatters submitted records requests to 16 University of California and California State University campuses, seeking information about payments to their Division I athletes, but many schools provided little or no information in response. The lawsuit states that taxpayers are entitled to know the names of players who have received money and the teams they play on.” Also from Echelman: “After meeting with attorneys at Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, which represented CalMatters, both [Cal and UCLA] provided some records, which give a first-of-its-kind glimpse into the new dynamics of college sports. They each said they spent about $20.5M paying athletes in the 2025-26 academic year, which is the maximum amount allowed. UCLA said it paid 229 athletes. UC Berkeley said it paid 147.” San Diego State reportedly distributed $8.661M to student-athletes while UC Santa Barbara shared $1.392M. All other schools listed paid athletes less than $1M. (link)
The Baseball Oversight Committee has “decided to scale back the initial rollout of ABS, taking it from full implementation to experimental, meaning it can only be used in conference games this year,” according to Baseball America’s Jacob Rudner. (link)
Pepperdine and Playfly are expanding their strategic partnership, with Playfly being selected to lead outbound athletic ticket sales for The Mountain at Mullin Park, Pepperdine's new on-campus arena scheduled to open December 2026. As part of the agreement, Playfly will provide a dedicated staff member in the Head of New Arena Sales position focused on driving ticket sales and cultivating new fan relationships ahead of the arena's opening. “You’d think a fighter jet had just buzzed USC’s football practice field.” That’s how the California Post’s Ben Bolch describes the new sound setup in the Trojans’ $200M Bloom Football Performance Center. Designed to simulate crowd noise at “eardrum-shattering decibels,” the system utilizes three loudspeakers attached to light poles at each corner of the practice field, replacing the old portable speakers that didn’t pack the same wallop. HC Lincoln Riley: “From what we were using before to now, it’s like going from the minor to the major leagues. So it’s a huge advantage for us, it helps recreate both as the Coliseum has ramped back up and we’ve had some awesome home-field advantages, it gets us ready for that, and going on the road to some of these Big Ten venues, it’s been super helpful. … It’s got some real power. Operating in those moments and players being used to it is a real thing and the more you can recreate that stuff, the more prepared they’re going to be. … I’m glad we did it, it turned out tremendous.” (link)

Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger reports that SEC presidents and ADs will convene in Birmingham on Tuesday for a previously scheduled, two-day meeting, centering on an exploration into a conference-only governance model. Dellenger adds: “The focus, for now, is on self-governance and not a competitive breakaway. Already seen as an unusual gathering, the meeting now takes on more significance as SEC leaders meet at a time of unrest. They must grapple with the eligibility situation, where LSU may be violating the league’s intraconference transfer rule & NCAA policy banning pro-players. The meeting’s original intent focused on the move to create conference-only rules/enforcement - transfers, eligibility, the cap, etc. - as a way to avoid legal challenges. For now, most view this as a governance breakaway and not a move to compete only against its own members. It is not clear, but unlikely, that substantial decisions will be made. The meeting is expected to feature presentations and serious discussion on both the continued effort to pass federal legislation and self-governance, which is a top priority for many SEC presidents and ADs.” (link)
Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti has spent his career “pushing against convention,” per SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who notes his disinterest in headlines, good or bad, can ruffle feathers, but it’s also created an air of mystery around the league boss. On criticism of his tenure, Petitti: “When I have one-on-one conversations with reporters, I’m pretty transparent. I always have been. Understanding how to do that [is important], but if anything, if you’re saying [have I been] guilty of focusing on the work and less the messaging? I’ll put my hand up and say, ‘That’s probably me.’ In this job, there has to be better balance. That’s a lesson well learned.” More…
➤ Nebraska AD Troy Dannen on Petitti’s standing within the league: “Tony does his business with his ADs and his presidents and not the media. And as a result, there’s probably a little bit of mystery and uncertainty about him outside of the Big Ten. That said, inside the Big Ten, because of how he does his business, he has the athletic directors and he has the presidents in a really good place.” Washington AD Pat Chun adds: “If he doesn’t have enemies, he’s probably not doing his job well.”
➤ Petitti has become somewhat of a “convenient villain in college sports’ ongoing identity crisis” as his reluctance to publicly explain his sometimes radical pursuits leaves others to define him. Former CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus: “Nobody is going to push Tony Petitti around. He has a lot of authority. He uses that authority, I believe, in a responsible way. But if he feels strongly about something, he’s going to be the No. 1 advocate for the people for whom he works. And if that rubs people the wrong way, so be it. That’s his job.” TurnkeyZRG CEO Len Perna adds: “You need years to learn how to do this job — even in peace time. But Tony’s never known peace time. From Day 1, he’s had to be a ‘wartime’ commissioner, with extraordinary challenges. He’s right on the 24-team CFP. He’s right to explore PE. … He was right to heed Michigan and pause it. Tony’s really good now, and will continue to get better with time.” (link)
Kansas State AD Gene Taylor joined the Boscoe’s Boys podcast to discuss navigating modern collegiate roster economics, managing structural changes surrounding NIL, the College Sports Commission and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ On managing roster investments under CSC oversight: "When the College Sports Commission got involved, they've started really clamping down on above the cap NIL. In other words, it has to be approved. It has to go through. And there's many, many of those dollars that are floating out there that aren't getting approved. … We've had, we think, legitimate deals that we put through the CSC that we think have all the deliverables … that constantly comes back and say it's overvalued by 50%. So, there's a lot of schools, I know the dollars we're spending, and there's no way those dollars are flowing to those athletes unless they're going to start paying them under the table."
➤ As for committing to maximum revenue share thresholds and expanded scholarship allocations for 2026-27: "We'll be above $21.3M, which is the number this year, plus the additional scholarships. So yeah, that's always going to be our goal is to hit the maximum rev share number. Now, there's some things going on with the Protect College Sports Act that start adding in some potential other funds that get up there. That's still a little bit of a ways before we have to worry about that. But if it passes, then that's going to be another challenge to schools to come up with that second pool of money that they need for retention." (link)
Army West Point AD Tom Theodorakis pens an effort to help fans better understand how the athletics department is organized, specifically the role served by the Army West Point Athletic Association (AWPAA). “While many institutions are only now creating nonprofit organizations, LLCs, and commercial ventures to adapt to this new era, Army West Point Athletics has operated under a flexible and innovative organizational model for years.” More…
➤ “Through a Cooperative Agreement (CA) with the Army, AWPAA combines the operational flexibility of a modern nonprofit organization with the oversight, accountability, and values that define West Point. This unique model allows us to move with greater agility while remaining fully aligned with the Academy's mission. … The AWPAA structure has increased organizational flexibility, strengthened hiring practices, streamlined procurement, accelerated decision-making, and expanded our ability to generate new revenue. Most importantly, it allows us to be proactive rather than reactive as college athletics continues to evolve.”
➤ “AWPAA receives only limited funding from the Academy, $15.5M, representing a relatively small portion of our annual operating budget. The majority of our funding comes from philanthropy, corporate partnerships, ticket sales, premium seating, concessions, licensing, and other externally generated revenue. Our operating budget for Fiscal Year 2025-26 is approximately $61M. These resources directly support recruiting, coaching, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, nutrition, leadership development, team travel, facilities, and the extraordinary Division I experience we strive to provide every cadet-athlete.”
➤ “The landscape of college athletics will continue to change, but our purpose never will. We will continue to innovate, diversify our revenue streams, invest strategically, and remain responsible stewards of every dollar entrusted to us—all while staying true to the values and mission that make West Point unlike any other institution in the country.” (link)
Troy agrees to a four-year, $2.1M jersey patch partnership with Troy Bank & Trust, per WTVY News 4’s Ty Storey, who notes the deal, which includes an option for a fifth year, marks the first of its kind at the Group of Six level. Through the agreement, the financial institution will become the official jersey patch sponsor for all 16 of the university’s athletic programs and its logo will be featured on all coaches’ in-game apparel. The bank will also maintain branding on the right-field wall at Riddle-Pace Field, on press conference backdrops and on digital signage. The collaboration was brokered by Playfly Sports’ Troy Sports Properties. (link)
Montana highlights a new partnership to have the University of Montana Foundation serve as the first official jersey patch partner of Griz football. Rather than feature a corporate sponsor, every Grizzly football player will wear a "For Montana" patch in 2026, raising awareness of the Foundation's newly launched For Montana Scholarship Initiative, designed to expand scholarship support for Montana-resident students. The patch was made possible by an anonymous donor who provided a gift to athletics to secure the location on the Grizzly jerseys. (link)
Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger reports that in a surprising twist, the NCAA re-reviewed the waiver request of Michigan State football student-athlete Rodney Bullard and is expected to grant his request for additional eligibility. Bullard’s hearing over a potential TRO was slated for Thursday. (link)
Appearing on the Assorted Crackers podcast, Ole Miss Grove Collective Executive Director Walker Jones said the Rebels’ program asked the FBI for assistance in determining whether former HC Lane Kiffin had bugged the team’s offices during the chaotic process that led to his departure for the same role at LSU. “We actually had the FBI come through and walk the building for bugs and for everything. We knew kind of what was in Baton Rouge, and we knew how they operated. I remember getting on my knees and looking underneath the desk, like checking for, is there some sort of bug in my office? Somebody was like, ‘What are you doing?’ I’m like, ‘You just trust me. You don’t know this guy like I did.'” More from Jones on the weeks following Kiffin’s acceptance of the LSU job as key staffers were slated to follow him to Baton Rouge: “We literally had to have two different text threads, two different staff meetings. We had to ask coaches to leave the room. We had no hall room conversations, nothing written down, nothing written on the grease boards in the office, because half the staff, we literally were going to be competing against.” (link)
Murray State has finalized $4M worth of upgrades at Rudolph Family Field at Roy Stewart Stadium. The Racers have installed a new FieldTurf and track surface, added a small auxiliary field behind the north end zone and made major upgrades to the Draffen Family Performance Center. Murray State will also unveil a new videoboard that will be installed this season. As for the $100M Leading the Pack campaign, the Racers have raised $52.75M. (link)
