Edition #94
August 25, 2026
The NCAA has inked a sponsorship sales agreement to have Playfly Sports work alongside the association in driving local commercial revenue, while developing innovative ways to package, market and activate assets that do not conflict with current NCAA corporate partnerships. NCAA President Charlie Baker: “Playfly’s network of resources and relationships will provide benefits that could positively impact every school across our organization, provide added visibility to NCAA programs, and make us better and stronger amid the evolving landscape of college athletics.” (link)
Are surging professional sports franchise valuations the sign of a bulletproof asset class or a fragile bubble waiting for a correction
That’s the core question framing the newest CRO.ticker. Here are three key takeaways from today’s edition:
➤ The Valuation Bubble: The perception of sports franchises as a flawless financial hedge is vulnerable. If local media rights collapse, taxpayers reject stadium subsidies, or core fans are priced out, financial multiples will inevitably reset, potentially wiping out billions in team equity overnight.
➤ The Helmets-Off Growth Play: By tapping into viral touchdown celebrations and the massive social followings of players' partners, the NFL is converting off-field cultural moments into Gen Z and female audience growth.
➤ Revenue Departments as AI Labs: CROs are spearheading enterprise AI adoption. Because engineering or financial AI errors carry existential corporate risk, sales environments provide the safest, most flexible sandbox for executives to rapidly test and deploy emerging technologies.
Scroll down for the Premier League's refusal of institutional private equity, how a gambling ban is creating a buyer's market for front-of-shirt sponsors, the Phillies' unorthodox front-office restructuring, and the internal tension over player comp tickets.
REWRITING THE PLAYBOOK
Sports-as-the-ultimate-AI-hedge has become a widely held maxim across the global business landscape over the past year. But, what if it’s wrong? Huddle Up publisher Joe Pompliano breaks down the potential economic triggers that could derail the massive surge in valuations…
➤ "If fans get priced out, attendance becomes all about who can afford a ticket, which is usually a different customer base than the one that represents the core fanbase."
➤ "With local media rights falling in most markets due to the demise of regional sports networks, many investors are now modeling out scenarios of what a team's operating income might look like if media rights fall 10%, 25%, or even 50%."
➤ "If governments suddenly decide that the economic impact of a sports team is no longer worth it... then owners will have to bring in new partners or shell out a few billion dollars for new stadiums, both of which would reduce the price they can pay for a team."
➤ "Say there is a team with $500M of annual revenue that is currently worth $6B. That's 12 times revenue. But if revenue falls 10% and the multiple resets to 8 times revenue, that same team's valuation all of a sudden becomes $3.6B, a 40% decline. The team doesn't even have to go bankrupt; buyers just have to demand a more normal return." (link)
The NFL partnered with creative agency 72andSunny to launch its 2026 kickoff campaign, "The Season Is Your Stage," a marketing push designed to scale fan engagement by capitalizing on the viral popularity of touchdown celebrations. The campaign centers around a fictional "Celly Studio" where athletes like Indianapolis Colts safety Cam Bynum and Chicago Bears receiver Rome Odunze workshop their post-score routines, aiming to convert the 350M social media views player celebrations generated last season into a participatory content ecosystem. The initiative represents an extension of the league's "helmets-off" strategy, pivoting away from historical penalties for excessive celebration to instead promote player personalities as a primary vehicle for international expansion. NFL SVP of Global Brand and Consumer Marketing Marissa Solis: "It starts with the players, but it can also start with a fan that goes viral." 72andSunny Chief Creative Officer Zach Hilder on relying on the universal appeal of dance to bridge cultural gaps as the league expands into Europe and South America: "Everyone can do a celly." (link)
Recent viral videos of NFL quarterbacks Justin Herbert, Joe Burrow, and Jaxson Dart interacting with their significant others—Madison Beer, Olivia Ponton, and Marissa Ayers—at training camp are part of a coordinated "helmets-off" marketing campaign designed to expand the league's female and Gen Z demographics, according to Front Office Sports' Ellyn Briggs. The content push aims to leverage the creators' combined 70M social media followers to outpace the NFL's standalone digital reach and arrives alongside a recent $32M franchise investment to launch a professional flag football league ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. NFL SVP of Social and Influencer Marketing Ian Trombetta: "Whether it’s Training Camp, weekly practice or a major event like the Super Bowl, we look for authentic opportunities to highlight our players and the people who are part of their journey. … The content is authentic, genuine and relatable, and that’s resonated strongly with women and young fans, who are key growth audiences for the NFL." Briggs notes the initiative caters directly to shifting consumer habits, as a recent study from USC Annenberg and the Acceleration Community of Companies revealed 49% of Gen Z fans develop an interest in sports through cultural moments rather than on-field play. The Philadelphia Phillies executed an unorthodox front-office restructuring by shifting GM Sam Fuld to President of Business Operations after Fuld, a former player, completed a two-year Executive MBA program at Penn’s Wharton School. The Wall Street Journal's Jared Diamond explains that Phillies owner John Middleton engineered the academic sabbatical to retain both Fuld and rising executive Preston Mattingly—who subsequently assumed the GM role under President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski—while grooming Fuld to eventually oversee the entire franchise upon Dombrowski's retirement. The restructuring positions Fuld to oversee ticket sales, sponsorships, and marketing, creating a rare bridge between a club's player personnel and commercial departments. Middleton on utilizing the demanding Ivy League curriculum to maximize Fuld’s unique intellectual profile: "He’s a Stanford-qualified student who happened to play baseball really well as opposed to a baseball player who happened to go to Stanford." WHERE THE MONEY MOVES NEXT
CROs are increasingly spearheading enterprise AI adoption due to the experimental nature of revenue organizations, according to Revenue Brew's Beck Salgado. AIQ CRO Brian Geddes utilizes AI models like Claude to streamline project-specific workflows, such as generating RFP documents to validate pricing assumptions against competitors, and he explains why revenue departments serve as ideal testing grounds for emerging technology: "If you talk about a CFO seat, the biggest risk is existential. It is much more weighty when you’re talking about finances. Same thing on the engineering side, you could really goof up a code base if you don’t move through it deliberately. On the revenue side you have more room to be creative and play a little bit." Egon Zehnder Leadership and Talent Advisor Irina Wolpert echoed this sentiment, explaining that sales environments naturally attract professionals with archetypes suited for rapid technological experimentation. Wolpert also explains how successful AI implementation elevates executives into prime candidates for future CEO roles: "Any profession, including CROs, where you’re beginning to see people who are beginning to separate themselves from the pack, it’s absolutely people who are playing with the tools, but who are finding ways to actually have impact in their day-to-day." Premier League CEO Richard Masters addressed the league's stance on institutional investment during a recent media briefing. Despite the influx of foreign capital across global sports properties, Masters emphasized the league has no intention of selling equity in its central media rights or future revenues to private firms and strongly supported individual club investments, specifically highlighting Jeff Bezos's recent consortium purchase of a 38% stake in Liverpool. More from Masters…
➤ On the absolute refusal to entertain private equity investments at the league level: "We’ve never had those discussions with anybody. Perhaps we don’t give out the right signals. Even during Covid, when people had big problems in front of them, we didn’t go near a solution like that. The Premier League model works very well. We have a very strong media rights business, we’re number one in that market, and there’s no need for us to access that sector."
➤ As for the $2.7B Liverpool acquisition by Jeff Bezos serving as validation for the league's financial health: "That is proof positive that people still look at the Premier League and think it’s a strong investment. It’s also a testament to the job Fenway Sports Group has done. Think about the club they bought all those years ago, the position it was in then and the position it’s in now, the progress they’ve made and all the trophies they’ve won." (link)
Eight Premier League clubs are navigating a buyer's market for front-of-shirt sponsorships as the league's ban on gambling companies takes effect for the 2026-27 season. Here’s the deal…
➤ The influx of available inventory allowed Silicon Valley data infrastructure company ClickHouse to secure a deal with Fulham, replacing online bookmaker SBOTOP. ClickHouse VP of Product and Marketing Tanya Bragin on the strategic appeal of targeting a mid-table London franchise to secure hospitality assets without paying a massive premium: "Top teams are going to be a much bigger investment for us to sponsor them. Until we’re a public company, mid-table would be ideal in terms of price range."
➤ Other organizations are executing similar pivots, with Everton replacing Stake with CMC Markets and Brentford swapping Hollywoodbets for Indeed. Meanwhile, gambling brands are redirecting their capital to unregulated assets like sleeves and training kits to maintain their foothold in English football, highlighted by Manchester United recently securing a £20M ($27M) annual training kit partnership with Betway.
➤ Fitzdares Marketing Manager Henry Beesley on the downstream financial impact of the regulatory shift: "Increasingly, bookmakers are going to be on the sleeve sponsorship, and the value of those sleeve sponsorships is going to increase significantly." (link)
➤ Newcastle United have agreed to a three-year front-of-training-kit sponsorship with fintech company SumUp. The Athletic’s Chris Waugh reports that “while Newcastle have not publicly confirmed the value of the SumUp tie-up, sources at the club insist it is worth £5M per season, which would take Newcastle’s total annual income from training-ground-related assets to around £11M per year.” (link)
The W Profile: Jess Smith
President, Golden State Valkyries
Responsible for overseeing all business operations for the franchise, leveraging her deep expertise in ticket sales, strategic partnerships, and operations. Her leadership is defined by an unparalleled ability to monetize fandom, an innovative approach to corporate sponsorships, and a fierce, foundational belief that professional sports teams can drive massive commercial revenue while simultaneously embedding deep, purpose-driven equity into the community.
MAKING THE MARGINS MATTER
SBJ's Ethan Joyce examined the balance professional sports franchises aim to find when managing complimentary player tickets and family seating, noting the comp tickets can cause tension between player relations and revenue-driven ticketing departments. The integration of mobile ticketing platforms—like MLB's Ballpark app—has streamlined the distribution process while allowing teams to track ticket usage and prevent unauthorized resale. However, establishing designated family sections remains a source of conflict as organizations attempt to balance VIP treatment for players' families with the necessity of maximizing revenue from premium inventory. More key takeaways…
➤ Minnesota Vikings Director of Family Engagement Quinn Gjersvig on establishing boundaries: "At the end of the day, I work with the families, but we all answer to the players. So respecting their boundaries and their wishes is something that I take a lot of care and pride in."
➤ An anonymous ticketing executive on balancing family access with premium sales: "There’s a delicate balance between making families feel VIP without actually giving them VIP seats that we sell for a lot of money. Generally, it’s a few rows behind the team bench, and maybe some other locations where it’s not quite a club or premium seat, but close to it. Also, we don’t necessarily allow family members to have access to our premium lounges. Those are exclusive experiences that we want to reserve for our paying customers, and we don’t want a flood of non-paying guests to take up the limited space we have there.”
➤ Former sports executive Lou DePaoli on the reluctance of franchises to publicly discuss ticket allocations: "I can understand why people don’t want to talk about this, because a lot of teams are very loosey-goosey on this. It depends on the game, depends on the day of the week, depends on what player’s asking." (link)
Event management company Diamond Sports Alliance has unveiled a scheduling consortium to utilize Arkansas baseball and softball fall exhibition match-ups as a means to raise NIL funding. Per Whole Hog Sports’ Matt Jones, the teams will play in what equates to softball-baseball doubleheaders on four dates in September and October, with outreach events for fans, such as autograph sessions, in between the games at Bogle Park and Baum-Walker Stadium. Dubbed the Diamond Classic, events will be conducted on September 18, October 3, October 17 and October 23. Brandon Lacy, a Fayetteville attorney who serves as the group’s registered agent and director, said the idea for the Diamond Sports Alliance was formed last year when he realized the Razorbacks were hosting fall baseball and softball events at what appeared to be a financial loss. “We’re not a collective. We don’t want the NCAA or the [College Sports Commission] to view us as a collective. That’s not what we do. We are holding events. We are promoting events. We’re making money off these events. The players are our talent at these events. … At some point we may venture into possibly putting on some youth clinics, training clinics, opportunities for these players to maybe make additional revenue if they want. We’re just not there yet.” (link)
Publicis Groupe's sports marketing division partnered with Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce and Lionsgate-owned 3 Arts Sports to launch Tekta, a dedicated consulting arm designed to streamline and measure corporate investments within the $4.5B college NIL market, according to Marketing Dive's Peter Adams. The joint venture merges Publicis' data-driven fan intelligence and measurement capabilities with Kelce's athlete perspective to establish an end-to-end marketing solution offering access to tens of thousands of DI athletes across 68 Power Four universities. The platform aims to reduce market fragmentation by ensuring compliance with state and conference regulations while delivering 50% to 70% faster speed to market for advertisers compared to legacy offerings. Publicis Sports CEO Suzy Deering: "Many of our clients are looking for ways to connect with customers at a local level, while also delivering scale and laddering up to a regional or national program. This has been challenging — if not impossible — to do from a brand standpoint, given all the pain points." (link)
Amerant Bank Arena, home of the Florida Panthers, has selected Sodexo Live as its new food and beverage provider, per SBJ’s Bret McCormick, who notes the “deal was described as multi-year, though no further detail was given.” (link)
