“It’s a mockery if we allow something like this to happen.”
An unnamed SEC President to On3 on the NFL-back-to-college tension
Featured Opportunity...
The Big Ten has officially banned NFL players from returning to the conference, with the league specifically preventing “football players who have signed a professional contract, were on a professional roster at any point or declared for the NFL Draft as an underclassman without withdrawing, from maintaining eligibility for athletic competition at a conference institution.” CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello adds that for any team that plays a former NFL player, the HC will face a suspension of 50% of contests and the school will be subject to fines. Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich notes players who weren’t drafted or just participated in rookie mini-camp tryouts, like new UCLA student-athlete Trent Hendrick, who was a part of the Louisiana lawsuit, are still eligible. (link, link, link)
Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger: “SEC presidents are expected to direct ADs against accepting pro players - under threat of penalty. Per bylaws, [Commissioner] Greg Sankey and/or presidents hold authority to deem a player ineligible, fine/suspend coaches, etc.” An anonymous individual told Dellenger: “This is Sankey’s ‘Sorsby Moment.’” (link)
More from the SEC ahead of this week’s presidents, chancellors and ADs meeting in Birmingham as On3 gets this from one SEC president: “It’s a mockery if we allow something like this to happen.” Another league president, when asked if there would be enough pressure from the rest of the league to force LSU to stand down, responded: “We shall see, but if we can’t enforce our own rules, it only spirals downward from here.” One SEC AD remarked that if LSU plays either former Ole Miss student-athletes Dae’Quan Wright or Zxavian Harris, the Tigers should be disqualified from the SEC season and/or pay a $1M fine. LSU reportedly has no intention of backing down from its stance with some sources believing that if the SEC were to penalize the Bayou Bengals, it could provide the school with grounds for a lawsuit against its own league. An SEC Football HC told On3 that if the SEC presidents and chancellors don’t step up, particularly on the intra-conference transfer issue, “then I think it’s over. We get litigated to death, and it all comes crashing down.” More. (link)
The ACC and Big 12 are also both considering league-wide policies banning pro players from returning to the conference, meaning that all four power leagues are now set to discuss such a rule. (link, link)
Dellenger adds: “Important to note that league-wide rules do not absolve a conference from legal challenges. In fact, conferences will likely now be sued by athletes as defendants in separate lawsuits or added as defendants in existing lawsuits, many times in front of the same judges. If/when this happens and conferences are enjoined from enforcing their league-wide policies, the conference commissioner and/or his presidents will then need to determine how aggressive they will be on sanctioning schools directly for playing an ineligible athlete.” (link)
NCAA SVP for External Affairs Tim Buckley sent a memo to membership outlining the message to senators about the Protect College Sports Act that reads, in part: “Every senator needs to hear from your school why letting pros take scholarships and playing opportunities away from 18- and 19-year-olds is wrong and how this bill will put a stop to this. The message for your senators: The bipartisan Protect College Sports Act mandates Division I college athletes receive scholarship, healthcare and revenue-sharing protections. Pros are suing to return to college and winning in state courts, and in turn, younger college students are losing opportunities for scholarships and competition. The bipartisan bill is supported by every corner of college sports, has earned bipartisan support and is teed up for a vote after recess. We need your support.” (link)
LSU Football HC Lane Kiffin and the Tigers reportedly touched base with multiple players on NFL rosters or their representation, attempting to get them to file a lawsuit against the NCAA in order to return to school, per CBS’ John Talty and Chris Hummer, who note that “includes some of the players who ended up in the Louisiana lawsuit, which sources have pointed out wasn't tried in Baton Rouge by accident.” The Tigers have signed three former NFL players thus far and have had conversations with others who remain in NFL camps ahead of the league's August 30 cut day. While Kiffin and LSU aren’t the only SEC programs following the controversial plan, they led the initial movement, which tipped over dominoes for other teams in the league. Kiffin: “I wouldn't like to be my boss that hired me and then come and say, 'Hey, here's these guys going around the country playing, making teams better. Why aren't we recruiting them because we may end up playing against them?' That's the way I'm thinking about it, and I don't think that's unique." More. (link)
The Tenth Circuit has granted the student-athletes’ request to expedite the appellate briefing schedule in the Wisne case, ordering a very quick turnaround, per Boise State Assoc. Professor Sam Ehrlich, who adds: “The court cannot yet commit to September oral arguments, however.” (link)
Unisun Sports, on behalf of the ASUN and UAC, inks a long-term media rights agreement with ESPN, marking the first time multiple Division I conferences have joined together under a unified MMR deal. Beginning with the 2026 academic year, ESPN will serve as the exclusive home for both leagues, with a comprehensive slate of ASUN and UAC regular-season and championship events set to be featured across ESPN+ as well as additional exposure on ESPN’s linear networks. The deal includes linear coverage of the ASUN and UAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championship games as well as regular season men’s basketball; over 1,200 digital productions on ESPN+; comprehensive live coverage of regular-season competition across multiple sports; the ability to produce 188 local linear games; and more. Collegiate Sports Management Group assisted Unisun Sports during the media rights evaluation and negotiation process. (link)
Oregon State leadership has objected to an effort by OSU’s women’s basketball team to unionize, per OBP’s Kyra Buckley, who notes it will now be up to the Oregon Employment Relations Board to determine if the respective student-athletes qualify as OSU employees and if they meet the requirements to be recognized as a unit. The objection was expected by leaders with the group helping the athletes organize, the United College Athletes Association, which has signaled it will continue to pursue the endeavor. Buckley adds: “Now that OSU has responded to the women’s basketball team’s petition, an administrative law judge with the state employment relations board will hold a hearing. The judge will put forward their recommendation to the full board, which will decide if the athletes qualify as employees. Whatever the Oregon Employment Relations Board decides could be challenged in state, or even federal, court.” (link)
Liberty inks a deal to have K-LOVE, Inc. serve as its official jersey patch sponsor for the 2026-27 season. Through the agreement, the media company’s logo will appear on 10 of the Flames’ game day jerseys [football; men's and women's soccer; men's and women's basketball; baseball; volleyball; softball; lacrosse; and field hockey], marking the first jersey patch sponsorship in the athletic department’s history. Van Wagner helped broker the deal. (link)

Virginia brought in a record $120.4M in total fundraising dollars during FY26 from 11,166 Virginia Athletics Foundation donors. The revenue breakdown consisted of $30.9M to scholarship & operational endowments; $28.5M in John Paul Jones Arena seating plan commitments; $27.3M in sport enhancement funds; $17.7M to the annual fund; and $8.8M in planned gifts. Included were 522 major gifts of $25K or more with record five-figure (328), six-figure (172) and seven-figure (22) commitments. VAF gifts represented 25% of all athletics department revenue in FY26, while the remainder of the total came through other revenue (29%) – sponsorships, university endowment distribution and postseason proceeds; ACC distributions (26%) – media rights and football and basketball postseason revenues; ticket sales (10%); and student fees (10%). St. Bonaventure raised a record $3.4M during FY26, surpassing the department’s previous standard by more than $1M. As part of the overall total, the Bonnies Athletic Fund achieved its $1.3M overall goal by bringing in a total of $1,301,332, while setting a record for donors with 2,279. It marked the fourth straight year the BAF surpassed the $1M plateau. Additionally, the Bonnies brought in almost $750K during its Athletics Giving Day; donors contributed nearly $1.5M to the Men's Basketball Excellence Fund and $60K to the Women's Basketball Excellence Fund in support of institutional NIL; and the Sixth Man Club, which supports operational excellence for the men's basketball program, raised $599,200 from 40 donors. More from Nebraska AD Troy Dannen, this time with Sports Nightly to discuss ticket sales, the financial landscape of college football, and the impending shift in non-conference scheduling driven by College Football Playoff expansion. Dannen noted that ticket sales for the Sept. 5 home opener against Ohio are moving in a “fairly normal fashion” with roughly 1,400 tickets remaining, and he expects a sellout to preserve the Huskers’ 410-game streak. Here’s more of what you need to know…
➤ The necessity of corporate investment to match a 400% increase in player costs: “We've got to invest in the ultimate resources which is the recruitment and retention of players. ... So, as much as we’re growing, the delta between us and the people we're chasing is still fairly significant. ... The donors and the fans have stepped up and supported it. Now, what other parts of the village do we need to step forward? It's going to sound like I'm pointing fingers, but the corporate community ... Those are the other parts of the village that a lot of our work right now is around trying to get them to the plate and support in every way.”
➤ Projecting a 24-team CFP and the possible elimination of FCS scheduling: “From an AD standpoint, I feel 24, we're headed down that road as early as next year. … I also believe that now that all leagues are playing nine conference games, and the Big Ten is maybe the league that doesn't have a requirement for a power-conference game outside the league, I firmly believe that we'll have that requirement coming.”
➤ Working to add multiple Power Four non-conference series: “I know we're working on two home-and-homes with Power Four teams to be added to our schedule. So that after we get through '27, we will have a Power Four team every year out through the end of the 30s on the schedule by the time we're done. That's going to be a ‘have to’ for a lot of reasons.” (link)

➤ Athletes Thread is teaming with Pathway Sports & Entertainment to bring its branding and NIL merchandise services to sports agencies, athletes, coaches and their representatives, per SBJ’s Mary Gaughan. Pathway Executive VP Bob Philp says the company’s role in the partnership will center on introductions and helping Athletes Thread build out its strategy with the needs of athletes, agents and agencies in mind. “Our goal at the end of the day is to maximize long-term recurring value for student-athletes in the college space. It’s just the next evolution in what we’re trying to accomplish and just filling out that athlete-centric commercial ecosystem and putting puzzle pieces together.” Pathway has previously inked agreements with Panini America around trading cards and athlete royalties; College Sports Co. around content and brand activation; and ALUM around real estate and entertainment opportunities in college towns. Trying to Keep Up: Eligibility…
➤ Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports a “Louisiana judge has granted RJ Luis an injunction, paving the way for him to play for LSU this season. Luis, a member of 2022 class, went undrafted in 2025 NBA Draft and signed a 2-way contract with Utah [Jazz] and was traded to Boston [Celtics] before being waived.” (link)
➤ Former Georgia safety JaCorey Thomas plans to file a lawsuit seeking a TRO that would allow him to return to college and enter the transfer portal, per CBS’ Matt Zenitz, who notes Thomas took part in rookie minicamp with the Carolina Panthers. (link)
➤ Meanwhile, the SEC released the following statement following a videoconference of presidents and chancellors: “College athletes, not former professional athletes, have been at the heart of the Southeastern Conference. Individuals who choose to leave college athletics, sign professional playing contracts and compete professionally should not then be permitted to return to college competition. Allowing that to occur will blur the line between college and professional sports, create significant competitive equity concerns and reduce opportunities for high school and current college athletes. College sports are for college athletes. The current confusion around national eligibility standards emphasizes the need to advance the Protect College Sports Act.” (link)
➤ A Colorado state court has denied Colorado football student-athlete Ezra Christensen’s request for a preliminary injunction. (link)
Asked about NIL Standard’s recent rankings that evaluated Nebraska’s NIL at 29th nationally ($23.7M), good for ninth place in the 18-team Big Ten, Huskers AD Troy Dannen wouldn’t specifically comment on the rankings, per the Omaha World-Herald’s Tom Shatel, but did offer up a disclaimer. “The numbers that float around I can tell you are much more inaccurate than they are accurate. That’s how the market got out of whack. There’s no transparency. Sometimes you hear somebody did something, and no they didn’t. It’s agents floating numbers. There are all sorts of performance incentives. A million-dollar deal might actually be $200K but winning the Heisman Trophy makes it a million-dollar deal.” More…
➤ According to Dannen, generating revenue is the top item in his job description and doing things such as “making season ticket holders pay a donation to keep their seats for the postseason” or “‘reseating’ an arena or stadium based on donation levels” is a necessary part of doing business in today’s new college sports era. Dannen: “I will say I do almost feel like we spend more time apologizing for doing the job that athletics requires in 2026. If we don’t do our job, our future is severely limited. No one’s doing this because they like having people upset and calling and yelling and threatening. That’s not the way this is done. … Right now it’s time to turn it up. We didn’t do it because we didn’t have to. Today we have to. There’s a fine line. Depending on where you stand on that line, we either push across it or we don’t push far enough.” (link)
Florida State AD Michael Alford acknowledged the pressure on Football HC Mike Norvell to deliver on-field results after the athletic department and donors spent the previous two years aggressively funding the program's infrastructure. Despite amassing just seven combined wins over the past two seasons, the Orlando Sentinel’s Mike Bianchi points out that Seminole Boosters generated a record $106M in pledges during the recent fiscal year to fund roster acquisitions and the hiring of GM John Garrett. Alford on how he’ll evaluate Norvell: "I'll know it when I see it. ... I'm not going to establish hypothetical benchmarks, but Mike and all of our coaches know our expectations and what our fans expect. When you have provided the resources to be successful, there's more pressure and standards that you have to go out and compete on the field." (link)
More from Kansas State AD Gene Taylor during a conversation with the Boscoe’s Boys podcast. On introducing stadium-wide beer sales while retaining halftime exit and re-entry: "We have about anywhere from 6K to 7K fans leave at halftime. … We think there'll be less people go out because they know they can still have a beverage here, but at least we'll take the pressure off, at least for the first year, to let us learn where the pressure points are, where do we need to improve either facilities or restrooms. So, we're going to take this year to evaluate it. And if we think we can manage it by changing some things within the facility structure, then we may go next year, we may change the process. … We think as a conservative [estimate], it's going to net us an additional $500K to as much as $850K to possibly even higher." (link)
Cal Co-ADs Jay Larson and Jenny Simon-O'Neill highlight recent facility upgrades and commercial milestones as well as outline the strategy behind launching an internal media studio to drive corporate partnerships. Larson on establishing administrative alignment across the university: "It's obviously a transformational time in college athletics. ... For this to get done right, we need alignment from the chancellor to the ADs and the GM, the AD for football, the head coaches and extending into the community. And I think you're seeing that throughout the last year and beyond to create this great momentum for our department." Securing Dialpad as the official jersey patch sponsor: "We call it the perfect partnership when you combine all those things. The need for additional revenue and to have the UC Berkeley alum at Startup U, to have a founder and CEO of a tech-based company located in the Bay who believes in his alma mater and believes with what we're doing here in Cal athletics. You couldn't ask for a better partnership." (link)
CBS’ Brandon Marcello examined the financial stratification among football programs in the Big Ten, where teams like Ohio State and Oregon reportedly boast rosters exceeding $40M while others scramble to reach the $21.3M revenue-sharing floor. The disparity forces head coaches to alter on-field strategies and prioritize fundraising just to survive in a conference threatening to splinter into multiple financial tiers. Here’s what leaders across the league had to say…
➤ Ohio State AD Ross Bjork on the need to establish financial predictability: "Everybody in our industry, we're OK with costs increasing. But when you can't forecast that, and you have no certainty — people use the word cost containment. That's the wrong word. I want cost certainty."
➤ Illinois Football HC Bret Bielema on altering his defensive scheme: "The reason I had to make a change on defense was I couldn't afford to pay the numbers. I had already gone after an offensive line and had to put money out that I needed to get done for that, and then I knew I could buy, in a way, patch together a new defensive scheme that wouldn't require as big of players. But some of those big D-linemen, those guys are going for an ungodly amount of money, and you just can't have them at the number we were at."
➤ Wisconsin Football HC Luke Fickell on accepting the fundraising requirements of the role: "I don't love it. But you know what I hate a hell of a lot more? It's freaking losing and not being able to compete. And that drives me a hell of a lot more than not liking the money you got to raise or the amount of money you got to pay." (link)
Nonprofit news outlet CalMatters filed a lawsuit against UCLA this week to obtain information about how the university pays its student-athletes. CalMatters’ Adam Echelman explains: “Last fall, CalMatters submitted records requests to 16 University of California and California State University campuses, seeking information about payments to their Division I athletes, but many schools provided little or no information in response. The lawsuit states that taxpayers are entitled to know the names of players who have received money and the teams they play on.” Also from Echelman: “After meeting with attorneys at Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, which represented CalMatters, both [Cal and UCLA] provided some records, which give a first-of-its-kind glimpse into the new dynamics of college sports. They each said they spent about $20.5M paying athletes in the 2025-26 academic year, which is the maximum amount allowed. UCLA said it paid 229 athletes. UC Berkeley said it paid 147.” San Diego State reportedly distributed $8.661M to student-athletes while UC Santa Barbara shared $1.392M. All other schools listed paid athletes less than $1M. (link)
The Baseball Oversight Committee has “decided to scale back the initial rollout of ABS, taking it from full implementation to experimental, meaning it can only be used in conference games this year,” according to Baseball America’s Jacob Rudner. (link)
Pepperdine and Playfly are expanding their strategic partnership, with Playfly being selected to lead outbound athletic ticket sales for The Mountain at Mullin Park, Pepperdine's new on-campus arena scheduled to open December 2026. As part of the agreement, Playfly will provide a dedicated staff member in the Head of New Arena Sales position focused on driving ticket sales and cultivating new fan relationships ahead of the arena's opening. (link)
“You’d think a fighter jet had just buzzed USC’s football practice field.” That’s how the California Post’s Ben Bolch describes the new sound setup in the Trojans’ $200M Bloom Football Performance Center. Designed to simulate crowd noise at “eardrum-shattering decibels,” the system utilizes three loudspeakers attached to light poles at each corner of the practice field, replacing the old portable speakers that didn’t pack the same wallop. HC Lincoln Riley: “From what we were using before to now, it’s like going from the minor to the major leagues. So it’s a huge advantage for us, it helps recreate both as the Coliseum has ramped back up and we’ve had some awesome home-field advantages, it gets us ready for that, and going on the road to some of these Big Ten venues, it’s been super helpful. … It’s got some real power. Operating in those moments and players being used to it is a real thing and the more you can recreate that stuff, the more prepared they’re going to be. … I’m glad we did it, it turned out tremendous.” (link)
