The Protect College Sports Act has cleared the second of three procedural votes in the Senate after receiving 77 supportive votes today, per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, who notes Sens. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) and Alex Padilla (D-CA) flipped from no to yes after Tuesday's initial vote. Lawmakers are reportedly targeting next Wednesday or Thursday for a final vote on the legislation. Semafor’s Burgess Everett reports Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) has “filed cloture on the amendment and the underlying bill. Without consent this will take all of next week to get through.” (link, link)

Lawmakers are eyeing key changes to the Protect College Sports Act’s expansion provision to provide more flexibility to move conferences, per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, who notes “the change reduces the independent probationary period for schools from five to three years and terminates the concept after six years. … At least five ACC schools - Miami, Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina & Stanford - have expressed concerns to lawmakers over the provision. Though the revisions would not fully meet their requests, the move is a compromise from lawmakers who are attempting to prevent the so-called ‘super league.’" (link)

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark visited with JohnWallStreet Founder Corey Leff and Playfly Sports Chairman Michael Schreiber on the Big Business On Campus podcast to discuss the league's growth trajectory, commercial expansion, as commercial revenue grew around 185% last year and is on track to do the same this year, and more. On utilizing under-monetized Olympic sports to create new IP: "Right now my focus is volleyball, soccer, baseball and softball. Those are the four. ... I think there's real opportunity to create new IP and monetize that IP. We haven't been as focused on some of the Olympic sports as maybe some of our tent pole events like our football championship or men's and women's basketball tournament at the end of the season. So, we're making a concerted effort to really focus on Olympic sports, creating new IP, and ultimately monetizing those opportunities. And I think you'll see and hear about that over the course of the next six months."

Preparing for the conference's upcoming media rights free agency: "We do a strategic business plan every year. ... This year we did [a north star slide]. And that north star is about rallying around the January 30 opportunity when we become a free agent to go back into the marketplace. So, everything we do between now and then sets us up for that moment. Our schools are investing in performance like never before. How do we as a conference continue to raise our profile and our narrative and our position within collegiate athletics? How do I continue to work on some of these sub-licensing opportunities like we did last year? Because that gives some of these different distribution platforms access to us now, and they get to experience what a potential partnership long-term might look like with the Big 12."

RedBird Capital’s role in revenue growth: "Our partnership with RedBird is a strategic partnership. And at the core, it's about driving our commercial business. ... They were drivers of our PayPal deal. They were drivers of our New Era partnership, and we're currently working on quite a few commercial opportunities to date. At the core, it's really about how can they give us access and help us given the enormity of their ecosystem and their relationships and drive value for the conference, which they've already done and they continue to do. Aside from that, they kind of serve as a safety net for our schools. If and when they want to tap into some capital, it's there.” (link)

Former National Labor Relations Board General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo has joined the United College Athletes Association (UCAA) advisory board, becoming a key expert in the group’s efforts to unionize college student-athletes, per Sportico’s Michael McCann. After being fired by President Donald Trump back in January 2025, which led to the rescinding of her memo asserting that student-athletes at private universities qualify as employees under the National Labor Relations Act, Abruzzo is now shifting her focus to state labor agencies. Through the UCAA, she is advising a campaign before the Oregon Employment Relations Board representing Oregon State women's basketball players, while securing over 100 union authorization cards across the sport. Abruzzo envisions a professional-style sectoral bargaining model for college sports and remains a staunch opponent of the Protect College Sports Act, arguing the bill's revenue-sharing caps undermine true collective bargaining. "If there was true collective bargaining, there would be a grievance arbitration to address and resolve conflicts and whatever systemic issues arise." (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White joined The Mike Keith Show to outline new gameday operations updates at Neyland Stadium, discuss ticket demand dynamics and more. On high season ticket demand, exploring potential stadium expansion to manage pricing and secondary market dynamics: “We have 29,400 accounts on a waiting list. We average three and a half tickets in a count. ... We'd love to [add seats]. I think the only place to do it is in [the] north end zone. And beyond that waiting list for season tickets, we also have on average about 20K students and we only have 12K seats in our student section. .. We need more student seats. I'd love to have more seats for season ticket holders. It would also maybe help drive down the secondary market a little bit, add a little more supply.” As for adjusting security perimeters and entry choke points to manage game-day crowds: “We're going from 35 to 60 [magnetometer screening machines]. ... The goal of it is to reduce the congestion closest to the gates. And we saw great success with that. I got a screenshot of gate 21 five minutes before kick last week and it was a ghost town.” (link)

Kentucky AD J Batt is looking to hire an Executive Assoc. AD for Player Management to help oversee NIL and revenue sharing in Lexington, per Kentucky Sports Radio’s Jack Pilgrim. When asked about the role, Batt noted it was important to lean into the current landscape of college athletics and find creative ways to accumulate talent and win at the highest level across all sports. “As we look at the continued evolution of student-athlete NIL and rev-share, one of the areas in which there is an opportunity to create competitive advantage is in both the construction of and the evaluation of those dollars. … How are those contracts put together, how are we managing this both at the program level, but also from the entire department, right? Creating a 30K-foot management of the entire student-athlete rev-share, NIL, et cetera, opportunities, there is real advantage of how those things are put together. So having somebody with expertise in that, negotiating those contracts is important, but also developing a robust evaluation of how those dollars are spent and how those dollars perform as they translate on the on-field, court, et cetera, success.” (link)

North Carolina has released a statement regarding its independent investigation into allegations related to the culture and climate within the UNC football program that reads in part: “The investigation determined that certain actions demonstrated a disregard for Carolina’s values and standards of conduct. The investigation also found that these actions were isolated in scope and not a systemic failure.” More…

“As the University previously announced, General Manager Michael Lombardi resigned from the program effective September 3. Steve Belichick has resigned from his position of defensive coordinator, effective October 27, 2026, following the conclusion of his current medical leave. … All necessary corrective actions are now underway and will be overseen by Carolina Athletics and the Office of University Counsel. With these actions, the University considers the investigation to be resolved.”

“Separately, Carolina Football has suspended Keeyun Chapman from the team indefinitely in connection with an incident Tuesday night. Chapman’s suspension, like the actions resulting from the investigation, reflect the University’s commitment to accountability and the well-being of its student athletes. We believe the steps announced today will help make Carolina Football a stronger program and one that continues to earn the pride of the entire Carolina community.” (link)

Of the commitment, $1M will provide flexible support for a wide range of football priorities, including recruiting, equipment, nutrition, athletic training, professional services, team travel and other program needs, while also establishing a permanent endowment benefiting the program; $3M will provide long-term resources across many of those same areas; and $1M will go toward the establishment of an endowed coaching position supporting Tulsa's linebackers coach that will be named after the donor family. Florida has received a philanthropic gift from Consumer Cellular Chairman/CEO Ed Evans to support construction of a new championship-level golf course in Gainesville to benefit the Gators’ men’s and women’s golf programs, while positioning the university to host premier collegiate, amateur and professional tournaments. The Evans University of Florida Golf Club will encompass more than 500 acres and feature an 18-hole course designed by Beau Welling and Steve Smyers, a Hart Howerton-designed clubhouse and guest cottages. Pirate Nation Gets Its Own Credit Card: ECU Athletics and Impact Card Launch a New Revenue Model for College Sports

ECU Athletics has partnered with Impact Card to launch a cobranded credit card and fintech rewards platform that turns everyday fan spending into direct revenue for the athletic department.

The model is simple. Every swipe generates new revenue for ECU Athletics at no additional cost to cardholders. Fans earn Impact Points on all purchases, with three to five times the standard rate on athletics related spending like tickets, merchandise, and concessions. Points redeem for ECU Athletics experiences, tickets, and direct donations to the programs Pirate Nation cares about most, from scholarships to facilities.

"The next frontier for college athletics is right in front of us and this partnership reflects exactly the kind of new, bold thinking ECU Athletics is focused on," said Jon Gilbert, Director of Athletics at East Carolina University. "Our fans and supporters have always shown up for this university & athletics department, and the Impact Card gives them a way to be rewarded for that loyalty every single day, not just on gameday."

For athletic departments navigating revenue sharing and rising costs, Impact Card offers a recurring, fan funded revenue stream that rewards loyalty year round, not just on gameday. It also gives corporate partners a new platform to reach fans through exclusive offers and experiences. Alumni, season ticket holders, and families can all carry the card.

CollegeAD shares the latest on Air Force’s AD search: “According to sources familiar with the process, officials have begun putting together an internal committee to help select a new AD. That committee, we were told, will make a recommendation to Superintendent Lt. Gen. Paul Moga, but ultimately, it'll be Moga's call on who the next AD will be. As for a timeline, one source described the school as currently being in ‘no rush.’” (link) For those interested in pursuing the position, the D1.dossier for Air Force is ready to help you save time and be better prepared. The FBS Oversight Committee ruled that it lacks the authority to overturn Western Michigan's 13-12 loss to Michigan on September 5, despite acknowledging that Big Ten replay officials failed to follow proper protocols when restoring one second to the clock before the game-winning touchdown pass and that "the outcome of the game would have been different." The decision follows formal appeals from MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher, which prompted the governing body to issue updated timing guidance via National Coordinator of Officials Ron Snodgrass and Secretary-Rules Editor Matt Young: "The official time for all college football games is the time displayed on the in-stadium game clock. When a replay review requires time to be restored or otherwise adjusted, the replay official's decision will be based on the embedded game clock contained within the program feed. If the broadcaster is unable to provide an embedded game clock, the replay official will use the game-clock graphic displayed as part of the broadcast feed." (link)

Athletics Admin’s KC Smurthwaite posits that Albuquerque serves as New Mexico Athletics’ greatest advantage, with new AD Ryan Berryman wanting the Lobos’ to be part of what defines the city. “What makes this place special is that we are the flagship institution in a city and metro area that’s over a million people. There are no major league pro teams here. And whether you went to UNM or not, people identify and embrace the Lobos. If you want to be a part of that where people are going to talk about the Lobos at the coffee shop, to the grocery store, to church, to everything in between, this is a great place for you.” More…

While generating more revenue without stripping away the identity that made the asset valuable in the first place is an example of the balancing act programs such as New Mexico face in the industry’s current era, for Berryman, it’s the people that remain the most important resource. “Retention of our student-athletes and our coaches is vital in this era. How people perceive us outside of this ZIP code, outside of these state lines matters. We’ve been really intentional about telling our story online. We’ve invested a lot into the digital strategy and creative content space.”

“We are a flagship member of the original [Mountain West], and we will act like it. We can sit and talk about what we don’t have or what could have happened or what should have happened or whatever. Or we can just go out and prove it on the field and on the court and in the classroom. Let’s be the best versions of ourselves. The noise will always be there at a national level, but what can we do here within our buildings, within our walls, to make this place proud and just to excel?”

Smurthwaite says Berryman is unusually accessible for an FBS AD, including on social media, where questions, complaints and unsolicited ideas can arrive at any hour. Berryman views that less as a nuisance than a reflection of New Mexico’s business model. “We have thousands of stakeholders, and every one of them matters. We don’t have one huge mega donor that’s going to give us $100M and bankroll everything. We have to be the Green Bay Packers model here. Every opinion matters. And we’re not going to have every great idea come from within these four walls of the office.” (link)

The sports executive search industry is expanding as properties increasingly rely on professional headhunters despite a crowded field of new competitors, according to SBJ's Terry Lefton. Prodigy Search Founder and CEO Scott Carmichael reported his firm is tracking toward its best year with business up at least 30%, a jump driven largely by private equity investments funding mixed-use venue developments and women's sports properties. TurnkeyZRG Chairman/CEO Len Perna observed that private equity and PE-backed sports agencies are pushing more roles to search firms, while The Team’s Amy Segal highlighted a rising demand for technology specialists to improve general business decisions. Excel Search & Advisory President Chad Biagini put it like this: “PE dollars continue flowing into sports and for good reason. The industry is healthy. Capital is the fuel.” (link)

Texas Tech will feature a State Farm logo on special ‘Let’s Ride’ football uniforms for tomorrow night’s matchup against Houston. We look forward to celebrating this partnership Friday night in front of a sold-out Galaxy Stadium and a nationally-televised audience on Fox.” (link)

Oklahoma President Joseph Harroz Jr. says the North Park Arena litigation gives OU the “full green light for the Sooners’ planned $1.3B entertainment district,” adding: “When we think about what makes universities great, part of that is not just what you experience for the four years you’re here or in your graduate work here. It’s what opportunities you have to stay around that ecosystem after you graduate.” (link)

Northern Arizona AD Richard Duran announced a reorganization of the department's senior staff. The reshuffle elevates Stayson Isobe from his previous role as Assoc. DePaul this week officially broke ground on its new $50M basketball practice facility. Blue Demons AD DeWayne Peevy: "This facility will certainly be transformational for both our men's and women's basketball programs. But I want everyone here to understand that this is bigger than basketball. What we're building will serve all 15 of our sports and 230-plus DePaul student-athletes. They will train here. They will recover here. They will receive sports medicine and performance support here. They will fuel their bodies here and learn how nutrition impacts performance and lifelong wellness. They will learn and develop here. They will build relationships here that will last long after their time at DePaul is finished.” The facility is slated to be ready by fall 2027. (link)

Wake Forest’s mixed-use development, The Grounds, has identified its first five retail tenants ahead of its fall 2027 opening. Per SBJ’s Bret McCormick, the first wave includes: The Jimmy – a Mediterranean and Italian-inspired restaurant from N.C.-based restaurateur Jim Noble that will fully occupy the two-story building nearest Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium; The Fieldhouse Tavern – another two-story space that will feature a food-forward sports bar from Winston-Salem restaurateurs Tom and Brandon Brock; Bagels & Co. – a breakfast and lunch concept with a strong presence in college towns and communities; Tremble – the second state location for the fast-growing Pilates franchise; and Allegacy Financial – a multipurpose location for the financial institution. Retail village portion owner Front Street Capital and Carter is collaborating with the university on tenant selection with Wake set to benefit financially over the long-term through ground lease income derived from the retail village, as well as from potential revenue sharing opportunities. Adidas has secured a multi-year extension to remain the exclusive apparel and footwear sponsor of Overtime Elite (OTE), expanding its scope to include the Overtime Select high school girls' basketball showcase and the OT7 7-on-7 football league, according to reports from Forbes and Yahoo. Per Youth Sports Business Report’s Cameron Korab, the partnership trades performance gear, NIL education and professional development programming for early brand access to top high school prospects and exposure to Overtime's digital footprint. While OTE has produced more than a dozen professional athletes, former top-five NBA Draft picks Amen and Ausar Thompson (Nike), and Alexandre Sarr (Decathlon) ultimately signed shoe deals with competing brands upon turning pro. Adidas North America VP of Sports Marketing Chris McGuire: "Overtime is one of the most exciting and innovative platforms in grassroots sports. This extension reflects how much we value what Overtime has built and the opportunities it creates to build meaningful relationships with rising athletes early in their careers." (link)
