From across the college athletics universe, more details on the NAIA’s five seasons of eligibility proposal: “If approved, the fifth season will be available to all 2026-27 incoming and current student-athletes. The proposal requires that student-athletes complete 96 credits to be eligible for a fifth season, as well as the discontinuation of the 20% rule as it pertains to seasons of competition. (The 20% threshold for financial aid limits will remain unchanged and is not a part of the proposal.)” A virtual business meeting to vote on the proposal will take place on November 4. (link)

Can college football programs manage the risks associated with utilizing AI? The Athletic’s Austin Meek seeks to answer that question with coaching staffs across the country now leveraging AI tools to optimize game preparation, roster management and athletic performance. Nebraska (DI) Football HC Matt Rhule began implementing Claude Code to analyze the Huskers’ practice schedules, game scripts, travel itineraries and practice GPS data to flag inefficiencies, such as play calls practiced repeatedly but rarely used in games. Florida (DI) operates an AI-Powered Athletics initiative using its HiPerGator computing environment to analyze over a trillion data points from its Athletics Databank, including GPS, neuromuscular performance and injury metrics, to predict injury risks and guide recovery. In addition to player tracking, Nebraska Assistant AD for Strategic Intelligence Sean Padden also utilizes ChatGPT to transform raw data from Championship Analytics into digestible narrative game strategy books for coaches. However, Victory Cybersecurity Consulting Founder Travis Whitesel warns programs of cybersecurity risks, advising staff not to input sensitive data into public platforms and that human oversight remains essential when handling AI outputs. Padden adds: “It will flat-out lie to you. It can be a wizard, but it can be a drunk wizard. You have to check the work.” (link)

Carnegie Mellon received a $250K commitment from the Bikulege Family Foundation to support the football program. (link)

Carnegie Mellon also received a $3B donation from Citadel Founder/CEO Ken Griffin, the largest gift in the history of higher education. $1B will be split evenly between investments in the School of Computer Science that will now bear Griffin’s name and the university’s highest priorities. The remaining $2B will launch a new 35-acre campus in Miami, FL that is slated to begin enrolling students in 2028. President Farnam Jahanian: “Throughout our history, CMU has anticipated moments of profound technological change and responded with new ways of thinking and solving problems. Artificial intelligence represents one of the defining intellectual developments of our time, and it demands that we rethink how we educate students, conduct research and partner with others. UC Santa Cruz is facing a $53M core funds deficit for FY27, with the university having already saved $26M for a three-year savings total of $99M. (link)

A number of CUNY institutions are projecting FY26 structural deficits: York (NY) - $9.9M, Baruch - $7.5M, Medgar Evers - $5.1M, Brooklyn College - $4.8M and Lehman - $2.9M. According to CUNY Committee on Finance and Administration documents, CUNY is projecting that the system-wide deficit will grow to $61M in FY26 as expenditures are up 8% year-over-year and tuition revenue and fees are down 1%. Marucci Sports is once again privately owned after Fox Factory Holding Corp. sold the baseball bat manufacturer to a group led by Marucci Founder/CEO Kurt Ainsworth for $225M, per Nola.com’s Timothy Boone, who notes the company plans to remain in Baton Rouge, with existing brands and leadership in place. In a statement, Ainsworth: “Having the opportunity to lead Marucci back into founder-led, private ownership is incredibly meaningful to me. Marucci started in my backyard in 2004 with a simple goal: to make the products players want and need to be successful. That same goal has guided us for more than twenty-two years, and it will remain at the center of everything we do.” Fox Factory acquired Marucci back in November 2023 for $572M, but began looking to sell in February after not bringing in the expected financial returns.
