Introduction
The highest levels of professional baseball front offices are typically heavily segmented: the legal team mitigates risk, the business side drives revenue, and baseball operations builds the roster. Marti Wronski’s historic executive ascension upended that siloed structure. In December 2022, the Milwaukee Brewers promoted her to Chief Operating Officer, making her the highest-ranking female executive in the franchise since the early 2000s and at that time the only woman to hold the COO title across all 30 Major League Baseball clubs.
She is responsible for the overarching business machinery of the Brewers, managing everything from information technology and human resources to organizational culture, business strategy, and major facility projects. Her leadership is defined by an unparalleled legal foundation, a deeply integrated understanding of the team’s international footprint, and an operational philosophy that insists elite business execution requires dismantling departmental barriers to find the underlying "why."
From the Courtroom to the Clubhouse
Wronski’s operational expertise was not built in ticket sales or marketing, but in the rigorous, high-stakes trenches of corporate law. Armed with a law degree from the University of Wisconsin and experience as a litigator at Foley & Lardner LLP (as well as time spent teaching as a law professor at Marquette University), she joined the Brewers in 2003.
Over the next two decades, she operated as the franchise's central nervous system. As General Counsel, she didn't just review contracts; she evaluated the entire operational health of the organization. Because every major initiative—from multi-million dollar stadium HVAC systems to global corporate sponsorships and elite player contracts—had to cross her desk for legal clearance, she gained an exhaustive, granular understanding of how the Brewers functioned as a business. She naturally evolved into the organization's ultimate "connector," synthesizing the competing demands of vastly different departments. By the time ownership elevated her to COO, she already possessed the rare ability to view a complex organizational problem through both a strict legal lens and a pragmatic commercial lens simultaneously.

The Brewers Playbook
Wronski approaches the operation of a Major League Baseball franchise with a strategy that treats organizational culture and structural agility as the ultimate competitive moats—especially for a team operating in the league's smallest media market. Her playbook encompasses three critical pillars:
➤ The Analytical "Why": Wronski fundamentally rejects the idea that a sports executive should passively approve deals. She utilizes her legal background to interrogate the underlying strategy of every business decision, constantly asking why a partnership is happening and who needs to be involved. This rigorous cross-examination ensures that the Brewers' business analytics and strategy teams operate with maximum efficiency and total alignment.
➤ Protecting the Pipeline (Globally): Wronski recognizes that a team's enterprise value is inextricably tied to its player development infrastructure. She oversaw the massive operational complexities of opening the Brewers' state-of-the-art baseball academy in the Dominican Republic. Navigating international work permits, volatile political climates, and complex building projects, she ensured that the franchise provides its young, vital international talent with the absolute best nutrition, training, and rest facilities to remain globally competitive.
➤ Elevating the Premium Experience: Managing the physical footprint of American Family Field is a massive component of her mandate. Wronski drives the strategy to continually upgrade the fan experience, most recently spearheading premium expansions like the exclusive "Truss Club" behind home plate, proving that the organization is endlessly focused on adapting the stadium to capture high-margin, modern consumer demands.
Lessons on Alignment and Culture
Wronski has built a historic career on the philosophy that a leader’s most important job is not to dictate, but to synthesize. She operates with the understanding that corporate silos destroy value; if the sales team isn't communicating with the legal team, the entire franchise suffers.
Crucially, she approaches corporate culture as a tangible business metric rather than an abstract HR concept. As she has stated regarding business transformation, sustainable success only happens when the majority of people in an organization have aligned beliefs and when leadership mindsets fuel consistent action. Her success proves that the most formidable executives are those who act as the structural bridge, ensuring that the visionary goals of ownership are translated into executable, daily realities for the staff.

Takeaways
➤ Legal Rigor is a Commercial Asset: Wronski’s path proves that a deep background in corporate law is an elite operational advantage. The ability to dissect complex contracts provides a leader with a granular understanding of how a business actually functions.
➤ Ask the "Why": The most effective COOs do not just execute strategy; they interrogate it. By constantly asking why a deal is being made and forcing different departments to collaborate, an executive prevents costly organizational silos.
➤ Infrastructure is Enterprise Value: Her work building the Dominican Republic academy highlights that modern sports executives must be as adept at international real estate and logistics as they are at traditional sports marketing, ensuring the team's talent pipeline is fundamentally protected.
➤ Culture Drives Action: By overseeing human resources and organizational culture, Wronski demonstrates that "soft skills" like aligned beliefs and team mindsets are actually the critical engines that drive consistent, profitable corporate action.

Quote to Remember
Wronski doesn’t dwell on being one of few female executives in MLB, though she adds: “But at the same time, I get why it needs to be important and I’ve embraced that in the last couple of months because the goal is for that not to be as big a deal. I know that it matters because of the number of young women I’ve never met who have sent me random letters and notes and texts and emails. It should be about, ‘He or she or they is really good at what they’re doing and I think they contribute,’ and take out this whole ‘female piece’ – that ought to just be a given.”
