How many grasshopper cocktails does it take to literally burn out the blenders at a major league concession stand?
That’s just one of the buzzy questions framing the newest CRO.ticker. Here are three key takeaways from today’s edition:
➤ Sweating the Concrete: Ownership groups continue to aggressively re-engineer their footprints into 365-day revenue engines, from European soccer clubs booking concert residencies to American franchises ripping up standard concourses to build ultra-premium speakeasies and VIP bunker suites.
➤ The B2B Billboard: Front-of-shirt and jersey patch sponsorships are undergoing a massive B2B takeover. Enterprise tech and infrastructure firms are swooping in to buy premium uniform real estate, showing that consumer-facing sports assets are a lucrative sales funnel.
➤ Agile Commerce: Franchises are driving massive per-cap spikes through hyper-curated, shape-shifting commerce, like converting a standard hot dog stand into a Friday-night Wisconsin supper club or a dedicated museum-store for game-used artifacts.

MAKING SPACE PAY…
The Lenovo Center, home to the Carolina Hurricanes and NC State men’s basketball, debuted its initial $100M phase of a planned $300M multi-year renovation during a preseason hockey game last week. The upgrades included 700 new lower-bowl seats expanded concourses, renovated locker rooms, upgraded lighting, and premium hospitality spaces including the Lenovo Legend Club and private Bunker Suites. The three-phase overhaul is funded in part through Wake County hotel and prepared food taxes, and Centennial Authority Executive Director Jeff Merritt explains says there remains a $200M budget phase ahead of board approvals: "Some time this fall or early next winter our board will get the final GMP, the guaranteed maximum price to finish the job. ... It’s a la carte. We have to fit it in a budget. And what the board had asked the design team to do was give us a menu of projects. Let’s say the number is 25. We may be able to afford 19. What’s the best use of that money? What gives us the most bang for the buck?" (link)
The Buying Sideline team toured three premium hospitality clubs at Subaru Park to review the Philadelphia Union's matchday offerings, highlighting how the organization is maximizing its existing stadium footprint by converting former working spaces into distinct luxury environments. The review evaluated Club LSA, a field-level VIP amenity offering unparalleled postgame player access; The Commodore, a spacious, English pub-style room located directly behind the Sons of Ben supporters section; and 2010 North, a private, speakeasy-style lounge featuring loge boxes and a polished cocktail program. Union CRO Charlie Slonaker: “As you look at trends in MLS and all the other leagues, you can kind of see that everybody is sort of adding more and more premium. I think there's sort of a never-ending appetite for more and more hospitality areas. … The best thing I ever heard on the topic was from our architectural partner in Gensler. Parking should be ultra-premium, and you should be able to go from your parking right into a nice club or right into a stadium, and then your seating should be right there as well." (link)
European football clubs are increasingly turning to summer concert residencies to maximize non-matchday revenues during the offseason. The Athletic’s Philip Buckingham notes Manchester City stands to capitalize on an 11-night residency by Oasis at Etihad Stadium, where the club will retain all food, beverage, and hospitality earnings—with catering sales averaging £15 to £20 per attendee and premium ticket packages exceeding £1,000 per person. A 50K-capacity venue can net between £1.2M and £1.6M per night, contributing to a broader industry trend exemplified by Tottenham Hotspur, which generated £77.3M in non-football revenue during the 2024-25 season across 17 concerts—including six nights of Beyonce grossing over £45M—and NFL games. Industry consultant and TheStadiumBusiness Founder Ian Nuttall: "The clubs have to sweat this capital asset. These venues are hugely demanding from a financial perspective. All the time your stadium is empty, it’s costing a huge amount of money in finance, maintenance, staffing and overheads. The more events, the more people you have visiting, the more revenue you’re bringing in." (link)
MLB recorded its fourth consecutive annual attendance increase in 2026, drawing 71.75M fans (29,540 per game)—a 0.5% increase over 2025 and the league's first four-year growth streak since 2004–07, according to Front Office Sports' Eric Fisher. The Dodgers led all franchises for a 13th straight season with a club-record 4.03M attendees, while the Rays posted the largest overall increase by nearly doubling attendance to 1.4M upon returning to Tropicana Field, and the White Sox delivered the largest organic gain with an increase of 535K to reach 1.99M. The Mets experienced the largest drop, falling by 472K to 2.71M, while the A's recorded a league-low 799,240 in Sacramento. Fisher notes the positive momentum faces potential disruption as the collective bargaining agreement expires December 1, with a management lockout anticipated over owner efforts to introduce a salary cap. New Podcast 🎙️ Leadership Strategy with Tom Moreland
In the latest episode of the NACMA Timeout Podcast, new Toledo Vice President and Director of Athletics Tom Moreland details his transition into the AD chair after successful stops as Chief Commercial Officer at Illinois and Senior Associate AD for Strategic Initiatives and Revenue Generation at Purdue.
Moreland emphasizes the necessity of treating college athletics as a business, pointing to professional sports models as a blueprint for outbound revenue generation, and outlines his goals to position Toledo at the top of the Mid-American Conference in corporate partnerships, ticket sales, and annual fund growth.
THE PRICE OF PROMINENCE…
The Premier League's voluntary ban on front-of-shirt gambling sponsorships has reshaped commercial opportunities across the division, paving the way for technology and consumer brands to acquire prominent inventory, SportsPro's Eoin Connolly observes. Teams like Everton, Nottingham Forest, and Aston Villa relocated betting sponsors to sleeve patches, while elite clubs secured lucrative agreements, highlighted by Liverpool's five-year deal with Turkish Airlines valued at a reported UK£300M ($401M). Connolly notes the regulatory change enabled B2B software company Temporal to score front-of-shirt placement with Crystal Palace, while performance drink brand Knox Hydrate secured Newcastle United's jersey front along with naming rights to the club's training ground, which will now be known as The Knox. Temporal CMO Clair Byrd: "We try to make investments that are responsible. And so we did a lot of work to figure out if we could actually replicate the Premier League platform – the digital footprint and reach – with the same consistency and frequency via other channels. ... And we could not. We would have to spend five or six times more money than we were investing with Palace to get the commensurate reach to the same amount of people in the same amount of places." (link)
The Philadelphia 76ers signed a multiyear jersey patch sponsorship with solid oxide fuel cell manufacturer Bloom Energy, finalizing the second-most lucrative patch agreement in the NBA. While financial terms were undisclosed, Sportico’s Kurt Badenhausen notes the Golden State Warriors currently lead the league with a $50M annual agreement with Iren, followed by the Los Angeles Lakers (Albert) and New York Knicks (Experience Abu Dhabi) at over $20M annually. Facilitated by Elevate, the partnership includes a seven-figure community investment and jersey branding for the G League Delaware Blue Coats, expanding the local footprint for a company that generated $3.1B in revenue over the last 12 months and recently joined the S&P 500 with an $81B market cap. (link)
The Phoenix Suns selected online checkout company Paze as their new jersey patch sponsor starting in the 2026-27 season, replacing PayPal in a multiyear agreement that includes entitlement rights to the team's season ticket membership program. Paze will also serve as the official digital wallet and online checkout sponsor for the Suns, joining the Atlanta Hawks as the second NBA franchise to feature the brand on uniforms while offering fans 50% off online team shop merchandise during a launch promotion. In a separate move, the Brooklyn Nets signed a multiyear jersey patch deal with cloud technology company Alibaba, designating the firm as official technology and cloud sponsor for the team's 60th anniversary season after previously partnering with All In Won. (link)
The R&A will double Sunday adult ticket prices for the 2027 Open at St. Andrews compared to 2022 as part of a sharper commercial push to offset stagnant revenues and surging administrative costs, according to a financial analysis by Money in Sport. Group turnover grew just 4.4% from 2022 to 2025 (reaching £157.3M), while a 60% surge in administrative costs (to £44.8M) dragged operating profits down from £12.7M to £2.7M. The steep ticket hike—which also represents a 36% increase over 2026 pricing—comes under heightened scrutiny because The R&A already holds £188M in net reserves alongside £17.1M in The R&A Foundation assets, resulting in funds accumulating in investment portfolios rather than supporting home golf unions or offsetting losses at facilities like Golf It!, which posted an underlying operating loss of £1M in 2025. The R&A: "Our commercial strength underpins our ability to invest into golf and deliver on our strategy. Whilst always recognising our broad role in the sport, we must selectively seek opportunities to enhance our profitability." (link)
FINDING THE WHITE SPACE…
The Atlanta Braves expanded their game-used memorabilia footprint at Truist Park with the 2026 debut of South End Trading Co., a 1,200-plus-square-foot storefront that merges a retail shop with an artifact museum. The new space replaces a 500-square-foot location and capitalizes on a growing collectibles market, driving a 55% YTD increase in Atlanta's authentics business and a 67% YoY jump in game-used sales. Other MLB franchises including the Kansas City Royals, Pittsburgh Pirates, and New York Mets have also increased their investment in the authentic merchandise sector to monetize consumer demand, and Braves VP of Retail Operations Lisa Williams notes: "We pay attention to the collectibles market in general, and we sell baseball cards here, so we’ve kind of had our eye on that and the card boom. We saw that same trend here, coming back to playing baseball in 2021 — it was a big jump. We could tell this is something, and it’s not just a fad. This is here to stay. It kept growing, and we could see it’s not just little kids. It’s the dads who grew up collecting, and the moms are now buying with their kids, and they’re sharing this together. That transcended into the game-used element." (link)
The Milwaukee Brewers partnered with Delaware North Sportservice to launch a convertible concession stand at American Family Field that transforms into a nostalgic Wisconsin-themed supper club on Friday nights. The Wisco Supper Club, which flips from a traditional hot dog stand in under an hour to align with the team's Friday City Connect jersey schedule, generated a 76% revenue increase and a 30% jump in per-transaction spending over the standard setup, per SBJ’s Bret McCormick, who notes the installation features custom menus including prime rib grilled cheese and grasshopper cocktails, prompting the franchise to retain the concept throughout its 2026 postseason run. Delaware North GM Kevin Jezewski: "It’s performed financially better than I ever thought, and it’s bringing more business to that area. When we make grasshoppers, the blenders are burning out because they’re so popular." (link)
The Green Bay Packers and Kansas Chiefs are launching a co-branded pop-up retail store at fancyrosi studio in Munich for three days ahead of the Lions-Patriots game at Allianz Arena on Nov. 15. The 50-50 joint venture splits costs and revenue while pairing the Packers' internal merchandising team with the Chiefs' commercial presence in Germany, where Kansas City has held international marketing rights since 2021 and Green Bay since March 2025. Green Bay is handling product design and development, while Kansas City leads the in-store experience. KC Chief Media and Marketing Officer Lara Krug: "It would be more difficult to do in the U.S. because fandom is so much more mature, in terms of avidity. The international program allows for some of these collaborative approaches." (link)
The Denver Broncos signed Canadian aerospace firm MDA Space as the franchise's first "space partner" in a multiyear sponsorship agreement, according to SBJ's Ben Fischer. Broncos executives approached MDA Space CEO Mike Greenley after the Ontario-based company acquired Boulder-area spacecraft manufacturer Blue Canyon Technologies, building on momentum from the Colorado Rockies' 2024 jersey patch deal with York Space Systems. Under the non-exclusive agreement, MDA Space secures rights surrounding player introductions at Empower Field at Mile High, with additional brand activations scheduled for 2027 as the franchise leverages Colorado's prominent aerospace footprint and proximity to U.S. Space Command. Broncos CCO Dennis Moore: "[The Rockies’ deal] opened our eyes to the industry and we moved fast. We read that article about their acquisition of Blue Canyon, and we got directly to [MDA] CEO Mike Greenley. We think MDA is probably the first of several space-specific partnerships we’d have."
