Is buying a random slot in a live-streamed trading card pack actually just an unregulated sports bet?

That’s just one of the high-stakes questions framing the newest CRO.ticker. Here are three key takeaways from today’s edition:

➤ The Brick-and-Mortar Rebellion: From Ted Leonsis prioritizing his $1B arena overhaul over regional sports networks, to the Atlanta Braves cutting out third-party developers to keep all $97M of The Battery's real estate revenue in-house, franchises are realizing that premium physical venues are true economic engines.

➤ The Valuation Hack: Josh Kushner and Bob Iger are aiming to tap sovereign wealth to overhaul the balance sheet without relying on traditional private equity. The strategy relies on reclaiming thousands of broker-held tickets for massive yield and extracting extreme operational efficiencies to double annual revenue to $1.6B.

➤ The Unregulated Asset Class: The trading card industry is becoming a billion-dollar financial market. With high-net-worth investors driving $1M+ vintage sales and live-stream "breakers" pulling in $85M by selling randomized pack slots, the sector is acting less like a hobby and increasingly like a high-stakes casino disguised as retail commerce.

Scroll down for the NFL scaling 350,000 AI marketing assets for a single Sunday, Disney deploying promotional pricing to beat an industry slump, Inter Milan cutting social posts by a third to hit 100M followers, and the Milwaukee Bucks landing a massive jersey patch deal for the post-Giannis era.

THE REVENUE ENGINE

SBJ's Juwan Watson takes a look at how UCF has expanded its premium seating inventory at Acrisure Bounce House by utilizing the rebuilt Roth Tower to drive year-round revenue. The renovation increased club space by 256%—expanding from 4,400 to 15,650 square feet—while adding 42% more club seating, 28 luxury suites, and 34 outdoor Sky Suites. Additionally, the club space features integrated food and beverage service and can operate as three distinct venues to host simultaneous events. AECOM lead designer Brandon Liebst: "They’ve got a tremendous amount of additional inventory in terms of premium, the variety of premium, which they can set at different price points. ... Again, it goes back to revenue capabilities because now they can have three different events, three different groups rent that space out at once if they want or they can still do it as one big venue as well." The traditional college sports donor stereotype is shifting, with premium seating buyers averaging six years younger than non-premium attendees and 33% falling between the ages of 35 and 44, according to a Playfly Sports survey conducted by Vision Insights. Income level also proves to be a weak predictor of interest, as 41% of fans earning under $100K purchased premium tickets compared to 39% of those earning between $100K and $200K. Furthermore, over half of premium respondents indicated a preference for attending fewer games in exchange for a higher-quality experience over attending more games in standard seating. The report emphasizes how premium offerings drive long-term program health: "Among premium consumers, 91% agreed that premium seating makes attending games more enjoyable, while 85% said it deepens their connection to the program and increases their likelihood of renewing season tickets." Thrive Capital Founder Josh Kushner and former Disney CEO Bob Iger are circulating an investor presentation outlining a strategy to nearly triple the Los Angeles Lakers' valuation to $30B over the next 10 years, according to Huddle Up publisher Joe Pompliano. Here’s the breakdown…

➤ The pitch details plans to cut into the team's $552M in annual expenses to boost projected EBITDA from $129M to $589M, while increasing annual revenue from an estimated $681M—currently driven 84% by media rights ($324M) and tickets ($245M), and 16% by sponsorships ($80M) and league distributions ($32M)—to $1.6B.

➤ The new ownership group aims to drive $150M in incremental revenue by 2028, largely by reclaiming roughly 6,000 broker-held season tickets and converting them to single-game sales to capture an additional $144 per ticket. The strategy would raise average single-game prices from $217 to $361 at an arena that operates at 99% capacity with 18,855 fans per game.

➤ The financial model also relies on extracting $20M in operating efficiencies, and Pompliano writes: "This isn’t a huge deal, but it speaks to what we all knew from the start. Josh Kushner and Bob Iger aren’t buying the Lakers personally. They will serve as the face of the team, raising billions of dollars from outside investors, including some potentially in the Middle East, to buy an iconic American asset they believe will generate $1.6B in annual revenue and be worth $30B next decade." (link)

Newly elected NHL Board of Governors Chair/Monumental Sports & Entertainment owner Ted Leonsis joined The Varsity podcast with Puck's John Ourand to discuss his long-term business philosophy and the ongoing $1B redevelopment of Capital One Arena. Here’s what you need to know…

➤ On private equity investments in sports franchises: "When private equity came into the business, I got nervous. For the most part, they’re managing someone else’s money and making fees. Sports teams don’t look like investable assets. We don’t worry about quarterly results. ... Rather than bring in private equity, I brought in a sovereign wealth fund, which parks money into something that appreciates over the long term and doesn’t want an exit."

➤ Shifting economic value from regional sports networks to physical venues: "Thirty years ago, they said the most valuable entities were the regional sports networks, and the buildings were a liability with big mortgages and maintenance. Now it’s the opposite. The R.S.N.s don’t have as much value, and the venue will pay for itself through ticket pricing, club memberships, and sponsorship revenues." (link)

OWNING THE RELATIONSHIP

The Atlanta Braves generated $97M in mixed-use development revenue at The Battery in 2025—a 45% increase from $67M in 2024—according to Braves Development Company President/CEO Mike Plant and Braves President/CEO Derek Schiller, who shared that over 400 sports organizations have visited the complex. They also explained during SBJ’s AXS DRIVE event that the franchise has eliminated third-party developers and brokers over the last six to seven years. Schiller: "We always thought that we needed a developer to come in and sort of help us with all of these things because, ‘Oh, developers have some sort of secret sauce;’ What we learned is they don’t. What we’ve learned is people want to deal with the team." Plant added: “I’d say don’t get oversold on the fact that you think you need to bring a developer in. They take on a risk of bringing some equity, take on some debt and some liability to get something built. But if you can handle that inside, all you’re doing is giving away money.” (link)

More from SBJ’s AXS DRIVE, where a panel discussion focused on the impact of artificial intelligence on the secondary ticket market, where AI purchasing agents are already active. RightsHelper CCO Josh Rose demonstrated the technology's capability by locating an available ticket for a Fever-Lynx game with a single click during his flight to the event. Pacers Sports & Entertainment EVP Barry Gibson emphasized that marketplaces must ensure discoverability for AI agents seeking optimal pricing or premium inventory, while MLS VP Mike Quarino acknowledged the potential for enhanced fan experiences and diminished team control over ticket distribution. Moderator Troy Tutt of CAZ Advisory Group questioned whether large language models like OpenAI, Anthropic, or Meta will demand a cut of ticketing inventory, prompting Rose to comment: "We don’t really know how they’re going to monetize. I don’t think anybody does. ... You’re already seeing large primary ticketing companies announcing integrated partnerships with these platforms." (link)

The Milwaukee Bucks selected shipping-supplies company Uline as their new jersey-patch sponsor, replacing Motorola following the conclusion of its five-year agreement on June 30, according to reporting from the Milwaukee Business Journal and Bloomberg. While financial terms were undisclosed, Bucks Chief Business Development & Strategy Officer Matt Pazaras previously targeted $10M annually for a minimum five-year patch deal. On Bloomberg's The Close, Bucks President Josh Glessing stated that the expanded Uline agreement exceeds the prior Motorola deal in scope and arena activation, maintaining that corporate interest remains strong despite the departure of Giannis Antetokounmpo. Glessing: “We have to ensure that we’re engaging new fans with or without Giannis. … We’ve got 16 family friendly games. Those are Friday, Saturday, Sunday games, the games that my kids can go to. We’ve got ticket packages starting at $150 for 10 tickets, that’s $15 a ticket to ensure that everyone has access to the NBA, everyone has access to the Milwaukee Bucks.” (link)

The NFL is expanding its partnership with Adobe to build an artificial intelligence-powered content ecosystem designed to scale personalized fan engagement globally, according to Marketing Brew's Alyssa Meyers. The digital expansion arrives as the league targets international audience growth, recently broadcasting a Week 1 matchup in Australia between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers that averaged 18.5M live viewers, and Adobe Enterprise CMO Rachel Thornton noted that a single Sunday tune-in campaign can now generate 350K unique assets across teams, languages, and channels. NFL VP of Marketing Technology and Consumer Products Chi Ogbuehi adds more context: "Once upon a time, a single campaign…maybe required a couple thousand assets. By the time you factor in…different languages, variations, different types of experiences, [for] a campaign that typically would have required about a couple thousand assets, now we’re looking at hundreds of thousands of assets." (link)

GROWTH AGAINST THE GRAIN

Disney bypassed a broader theme-park industry slowdown by deploying promotional pricing and package deals, driving a 3% YoY attendance increase in the most recent quarter, according to The Wall Street Journal's Jacob Passy. While competitors like Comcast-owned Universal Orlando Resort and United Parks & Resorts-owned SeaWorld reported weaker foot traffic and projected softer demand due to high travel costs, Disney leveraged discounted hotel stays, free dining plans, and complimentary "park hopping" to attract families, yielding a 4% rise in per capita guest spending across Q2. Passy also notes that travel agencies handling up to $80M in annual Disney vacations reported a sustained surge in bookings that positions the company for continued momentum ahead of a multibillion-dollar expansion of its Experiences division slated for 2027. (link)

Serie A champion Inter Milan decreased its social media output by approximately a third over the past year, and Marketing Brew's Alyssa Meyers observes the quality-over-quantity approach helped the club surpass 100M total followers in August, generating a 20% YoY increase in followers, a 43% jump in impressions, and a 33% rise in video views. The club targeted the highly fragmented U.S. market by launching a content collaboration with Spike Lee ahead of the Club World Cup, releasing a Pink Floyd merchandise line with Sony Music Italy, and debuting its away kit at Fanatics Fest NYC. The strategy also drove short-term momentum, as Mondo Metrics tracked the franchise as the third-top mover among all pro sports teams in early September, generating 19M engagements across roughly 800 posts for a 41% period-over-period increase. (link)

The trading card industry generated more than $900M in online sales across 8.7M transactions in August, eclipsing the previous market high of $695M. The Athletic's Benjamin Burrows notes the data from Card Ladder excludes direct purchases from manufacturers like Topps and Panini or retail giants like Target and Walmart, suggesting total monthly spending actually surpassed $1B. The modern card boom is driven by high-net-worth alternative investments, with 59 publicly known transactions of $1M or more already recorded in 2026—surpassing the previous full-year record of 43 in 2021. Meanwhile, the grading sector is also growing, as third-party authenticator GemRate reported a record 3.6M graded cards in July. Goldin Auctions Founder Ken Goldin: "The trading card industry has become the phoenix and has risen from the ashes. There were serious investors out there who thought it was a bubble. And then the market did something unexpected — it leveled off. It grew and it rose, and the key items today are selling at prices that make what people call the COVID-bubble era look cheap. ... There was a crash and the industry rose from the crash. That is what good financial markets do." (link)

Meanwhile, the sports card "breaking" industry has evolved into a lucrative live-streaming market, with New Jersey-based Trace 'n Chase projecting $85M in revenue this year from online pack openings, and GQ's Charlie Sosnick “breaks” down how it works. The business model—where viewers purchase randomized "slots" for a chance to win rare inventory like a $1.1M Paul Skenes rookie card—has fueled commerce platforms like Whatnot, which handled $8B in total sales in 2025 while charging a 6.5% to 8% commission on card transactions. The rapid expansion recently triggered legal scrutiny, as attorney Paul Lesko represents 70 clients in arbitration demanding Whatnot implement gambling safeguards like spending limits and self-exclusion mechanisms. Despite the backlash, the sector continues to attract high-profile investment, highlighted by former Trace 'n Chase operator Danny Vallario launching a new breaking venture alongside NBA center Karl-Anthony Towns on Fanatics Live. Problem Gambling Coalition of Colorado Executive Director Jamie Glick explained why the livestream card market mirrors unregulated betting: "The definition of gambling that I like to use is risking something of value in hopes of gaining something in return when the outcome is uncertain. When you use that definition, it really opens your eyes to a lot of types of behaviors that could be considered gambling that I consider non-traditional." (link)
