Is a $15 Nerds Gummy Cluster Brie Grilled Cheese the secret to fixing your stadium's early-arrival problem?
That’s just one of the sticky questions framing the newest CRO.ticker. Here are three key takeaways from today’s edition:
➤ The Sentiment Fallacy: The C-suite routinely misdiagnoses commercial risk by confusing social media outrage with actual consumer behavior. The mandate for modern leadership is simple: stop managing your brand for the loudest online shouters, and start managing it for the actual buyers.
➤ The Friction Litmus Test: To prove their value beyond passive digital impressions, CMOs are pivoting to high-friction, real-world experiences. By demanding actual consumer commitment, brands generate undeniable engagement the C-suite can’t ignore.
➤ Audience-Led Expansion: Don't chase a massive TAM just because a market is booming. The smartest brands ignore macroeconomic hype and only expand into new categories when verified behavioral signals prove their existing customers are already taking them there.

THE AFFINITY ADVANTAGE
Almost half of CMOs (42%) report difficulty communicating their value to other executives, according to a survey shared by Jasmine Seena from the fifth annual Marketing Brew Summit. To counter this pressure, brand leaders are investing in offline experiential marketing and reevaluating creator strategies. Here’s what you need to read…
➤ Oatly North America EVP/Executive Creative Director Michael Lee highlighted a faux hotel suite activation at the Toronto International Film Festival that generated two-and-a-half-hour wait times for matcha manicures, while Pinterest Global Head of Consumer Marketing Sara Pollack cited a phone-free Coachella activation focused on keeping attendees present.
➤ SharkNinja CMO Kaitlyn Hebert noted the company now brings creators upstream to help ideate products before the prototype phase. Conversely, Saint James Iced Tea Co-Founder/Co-CEO Brad Neumann favors unpaid experiential brand trips and recently hosted 25 influencers at a New York racetrack.
➤ Liberty Mutual Insurance CMO Jenna Lebel: "No one woke up here today saying, ‘I really want to buy insurance today.’ Our philosophy is rather than fight those dynamics and realities, we need to embrace them. That’s why you see the whole category rely on humor, entertainment, [and] brand characters." (link)
The Herbstreit DOGma: U.S. pet spending is projected to grow from $150B to over $250B in the next decade, prompting non-endemic brands to expand into pet culture through targeted products and partnerships, according to Ad Age's Erika Wheless, who notes companies like Hertz, Girl Scouts of the USA, and Subaru are introducing pet-focused campaigns and product features—such as Girl Scouts partnering with Bark on $9 dog treats and Subaru tailoring vehicle designs to the 60% of its drivers who own dogs. However, Liquid Death VP of Apparel and Merchandise Misha Brunelli warns against forcing pet campaigns without authentic consumer alignment: “I think the biggest mistake is entering the pet category just because it’s a growing market. For us, it wasn’t about looking at a pet industry report and deciding we need to get into pets, let’s capitalize. We were already seeing our own consumers buying these dog toys, which gave us a real signal that there was an existing affinity.” (link)
Southwest Airlines launched its "Enter Airplane Mode" campaign to reward Rapid Rewards loyalty members who upload screenshots of their home screen notifications or take a burnout quiz with reward points. Marketing Dive's Sara Karlovitch explains the campaign marks the first initiative under Sabrina Callahan, the airline's inaugural Chief Digital and Marketing Officer, as Southwest expands a rewards program approaching 100M members after growing enrollment 35% YoY in Q2. Created with creative partner GSD&M, creator agency Later, and media agency Sparks Foundry, the campaign features spots directed by Will Speck and Josh Gordon and narrated by Adam Scott asking viewers if they have "hit their booking point." A Southwest survey of 2,001 Americans found 76% feel burned out, 68% believe trips offer control over their time, 75% leave paid time off unused, and 34% have not taken a two-day trip in over a year. The loyalty push comes as a Barclays 2025 report indicates 80% of travelers rely on loyalty programs and 72% of millennials use rewards to stretch budgets following a 21% YoY jump in airfare, while Southwest posted record Q2 operating revenue of $8.4B—a 16.4% YoY increase. 2026 FBS Stadium Intro Videos
We watched every 2026 FBS stadium intro video we could find, 32 programs in all.
Most of the official cuts run between 1:00 and 1:40 and follow a similar formula: a narrated open, then a beat drop into big-play highlights set to real radio calls.
Oklahoma State built a full western around “(Ghost) Riders in the Sky,” East Carolina told a 2:26 pirate ballad, and Cal and Arizona State used the same agency to make two very different videos.
The report covers recurring themes, the music behind each video and a link to every one.
THE DEMAND DIVIDEND
SBJ’s Austin Karp reports YouGov data shows fans are also responding to Dr Pepper’s new Fansville ads this year. “Ahead of the season, Dr Pepper’s ‘Purchase Intent’ — which measures the percentage of consumers who say they would be most likely to purchase Dr Pepper — averaged around 5.5%. As the Fansville launch neared, the score then began to rise, reaching 9.0% on Aug. 27. ‘Purchase Intent’ continued climbing after the launch, peaking at 12.6% on Sept. 1, and then by Sept. 8, the metric was at 11.6%, more than double its prelaunch average.” (link)
The Miami Heat are partnering with Rockstar Games for a November 18 promotion called “A Night in Vice City” ahead of the highly anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto VI. According to ESPN, “Miami is rolling out plenty of offerings for the night. The night will feature a special Vice-themed court and a reimagined edition of the team's popular alternate uniforms, as well as ‘special game night activities’ and ‘unique game night activations.’” More details will be released in the coming weeks. Churchill Downs launched ticket sales on Oct. 8 for new premium inventory being rolled out after the two-year, $300M Victory Run renovation project designed by Populous. The project, which was scaled down from an initial $900M plan shelved in early 2025 due to tariffs and economic uncertainty, included the removal of 6,400 uncovered seats to build a four-story structure with 7,800 covered seats, 16 trackside suites, 2,200 second-floor box seats, and two luxury dining rooms known as the Legacy Club and Crown Jewel Club. Additionally, contractor Calhoun Construction will build 40 12-person infield cabanas priced at $480 per person by moving a rainwater swale underground. Victory Run ticket packages range from $2,200 to $7,500 for both the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby. (link)
The Las Vegas A’s have sold out the Athletic Club, the most exclusive premium hospitality space inside their future ballpark, 17 months ahead of its scheduled 2028 opening. Designed in partnership with hospitality leader Will Guidara and Aramark Sports + Entertainment, the speakeasy-inspired space sits behind home plate and features a private entrance and classic steakhouse dining. A’s President Marc Badain: "What stands out most about the response to the Athletic Club is not just that it sold out, but also who is buying it. Three out of every four buyers are from Southern Nevada, and nearly 70% are individuals rather than businesses. That tells us something important about the future of the A’s in Las Vegas – our fanbase is already taking shape and there’s real excitement in the community about what’s to come." (link)
Beauty brand sports sponsorships surged from under 3,000 partnerships in 2023 to 7,187 in 2025, driven by an $11.4B global advertising sector expanding its reach across women's sports leagues like the WNBA, NWSL, and PWHL, according to SponsorUnited. Although annual sports spend within the category remains relatively modest at $65-70M, brands are capitalizing on lower entry costs and strong fan purchase intent—evidenced by e.l.f. Beauty increasing its unaided brand awareness from 13% to 45% through sponsorships with the NWSL, PWHL, and Billie Jean King Cup. Additionally, Nielsen Fan Insights show 75% of PWHL fans remember league sponsors and 32% have made direct purchases from sponsoring brands. Trailblazing Sports Group Founder/CEO Sara Gotfredson: "Women's sports [have been] outkicking their coverage, if you want to use a sports analogy, in favorability and purchase intent. ... 54% of women's sports fans will actually be loyal and purchase a product of the brands that they see showing up again and again in women's sports." RISK TOLERANCE & NEW FANS
The NHL discontinued its "Hot for Hockey" audiobook campaign and removed all seven 30-to-90-second episodes from Spotify less than a week after launching the marketing initiative, according to the New York Post's Christian Arnold. The league contracted popular romance authors to write and narrate short stories featuring current players like Jack Eichel and Sebastian Aho to capitalize on the rising popularity of hockey romance novels and shows like Heated Rivalry and Off Campus. While SBJ initially reported the stories would release throughout the season, a league spokesperson told Front Office Sports the campaign was designed solely for the opening week. Regardless, Arnold notes the abrupt removal follows negative social media feedback and echoes previous controversies, such as when former Kraken forward Alex Wennberg and his wife publicly condemned inappropriate "BookTok" comments three years ago. (link)
Meanwhile, the NHL secured exclusive U.S. and Nordic distribution rights to Screech Owls, a 26-episode animated youth series debuting on CBC in Fall 2027. Production partners Shaftesbury, Sphere Animation, and Boat Rocker Studios created the 11-minute episode show featuring NHL All-Star P.K. Subban as executive producer and voice of Coach P.K. The franchise plans to expand into interactive gaming, consumer products, and global licensing, followed by a French-language rollout on Radio-Canada and TFO in Winter 2028. Subban emphasized the project's goal of reaching kids outside the traditional fan base: "You don’t need to know what ‘offside’ means to watch Screech Owls." (link)
NHL franchises including the New York Islanders, Columbus Blue Jackets, Seattle Kraken, Boston Bruins, Carolina Hurricanes, Buffalo Sabres, and Nashville Predators are leveraging viral food and beverage items to drive early arrivals, concourse exploration, and brand marketing, The Athletic’s Kaitlin Pohly observes. At UBS Arena, home of the Islanders, Executive Chef Ted Donnelly and his team developed a $14.99 Nerds Gummy Cluster Brie Grilled Cheese and an $18.49 Uncrustable Pulled Pork Tostada to stand out in a crowded sports market. At Columbus’ Nationwide Arena, chefs Ed Kowalski and Sean Barger created root beer float poutine for the 2026-27 season, while at Boston’s TD Garden, Executive Chef Mary Towers is developing a fully sealed lobster roll to accommodate fans holding beverages. Donnelly notes that fans are “coming for the hockey, but any way we can get people excited about coming in, and coming in early, with the amazing things that we do is always better." Barger adds: “There have been ideas that have sprung from a season-ticket holder telling me that they were craving one thing one time.” (link)
House of Strauss publisher Ethan Strauss argues major sports brands routinely misjudge online backlash by prioritizing social media sentiment over core financial realities. To illustrate, Strauss points to Nike discounting A'ja Wilson's A'One line after overindexing on WNBA discourse instead of capitalizing on Caitlin Clark, the Portland Trail Blazers firing announcer Braiden Bell over decade-old tweets, and retailers like Dick's Sporting Goods and Target severing ties with Good Good Golf even as the YouTube brand added 20K subscribers and maintained its 1M average video views. Strauss contends corporate leadership should instead adopt a "wait-a-month" approach rather than bowing to outrage: "If you wait out the noise, and choose to mostly ignore it, the issue usually goes away (if it ever was an issue in the first place). Some loud WNBA fans are mad on behalf of A’ja Wilson? Who cares. Your new announcer posted bad tweets at age 15? Who cares. Your brand partner made an offensive commercial? Well, if you so choose, ‘Who cares’ even could apply in that situation. The point is that the customer isn’t the shouter. The customer is the buyer. And most of them don’t buy what the shouters are selling.” (link)
