Is a rollercoaster monorail actually a viable stadium amenity, or just a massive liability?
That’s just one of the off-the-rails questions framing the newest CRO.ticker. Here are three key takeaways from today’s edition:
➤ The Creative Calculus: For decades, media spend was strictly measurable while creative was written off as a "non-working" expense. Now, brands are deploying predictive AI to score video and image assets before a campaign even launches, achieving 81% accuracy in forecasting conversions and driving a 4x spike in sales.
➤ The Insourcing Boom: Franchises and mid-tier brands are firing their outside agencies. From building dedicated production studios to leveraging generative AI to scale digital creative output, organizations are aggressively moving content creation in-house to slash concepting timelines, retain their IP, and lower operational risk.
➤ Yield Over Capacity: The era of the massive stadium expansion is giving way to footprint optimization. Arsenal exemplifies this shift, officially abandoning plans to expand the 60,000-seat Emirates Stadium in favor of driving higher matchday yield through high-margin upgrades to retail, hospitality, and experiential seating.
Scroll down for Fanatics weaponizing $2B to wage a sports betting ad war, Amazon and Kohl's actively blocking autonomous AI shopping bots, the Chicago Cubs winning a permanent injunction against rogue rooftop ticket sellers, and a sudden Brazilian betting ban threatening $191M in soccer sponsorships.
CONTROLLING CONSTRAINTS…
Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin and CFO Glenn Schiffman sit down with Bloomberg's Matthew Townsend to discuss the company's plan to capture market share from publicly-traded sports betting leaders DraftKings and FanDuel, noting the company plans to increase its gambling advertising budget from $350M this year to nearly $1B in 2027, utilizing $2B in free cash flow to fund the expansion. The financial commitment arrives as Fanatics projects total revenue to jump 40% to $14B this year, spanning $7B in merchandise, $5B in collectibles, and $2B from a sports betting unit that currently claims a 10% market share. More key takeaways…
➤ Rubin on increasing marketing spend amid the emergence of prediction platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket: "The betting and gaming business will be more complicated in 2027 because you not only have the addition of Kalshi and Polymarket, but now you have the addition of Fanatics spending at the same level as FanDuel and DraftKings. This year, we'll spend, in that business, $350M, and we could spend $800M or $1B next year."
➤ Schiffman on the cross-selling impact of the company's centralized rewards ecosystem: "We have about 22 to 23M customers a year, and about 3% of those are multi-business customers. Those customers spend five times as much as a single business customer, and they repeat anywhere from one-and-a-half to three times as much. We're really seeing the network effects kick in."
➤ Rubin on resisting pressure from investors like Clearlake, SoftBank, and Silver Lake to take the $31B company public: "No one's gonna push me to do anything we don't want. I own 31% of the business. I have a super majority. We're not doing anything that's not in the business's best interest. I have no interest in going public in the near- and mid-term." (link)
Kroger partnered with data firm Vidmob and trade association MMA Global to forecast e-commerce purchase conversion through predictive creative scoring prior to media activation. The study analyzed over 1,900 video and image assets across Meta and Google's DV360, demonstrating an 81% accuracy rate in predicting conversions based on variables like messaging and narrative structure. Creative aligned with AI-generated recommendations yielded a four-times improvement in conversion rates, while reallocating the same ad budget to higher-scoring media produced twice as many conversions. Marketing Dive’s Chris Kelly notes Kellanova previously conducted a similar study using view-through rates as a proxy, but the new analysis connected creative decisions directly to actual sales. Vidmob Founder/Executive Chairman Alex Collmer on the importance of measuring creative quality as generative AI tools like Claude, ChatGPT, and Copilot drive exponential content growth: "For too long, the industry has existed in this world where creative investments are labeled non-working and media investments are working. That’s just absurd. Every marketer you talk to says creative is 50% to 70% of results. How on earth can the thing that’s the far majority of results be the waste?" (link)
The Wall Street Journal’s Patrick Coffee notes retail brands are split on the adoption of AI-driven agentic commerce following the rollout of Meta's autonomous shopping tool Muse. While Walmart, Best Buy, and Shopify are accommodating third-party integrations, companies including Amazon, Kohl's, and eBay actively block shopping agents from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic over data privacy, fraud, and inventory hoarding concerns. Apparel conglomerate Tapestry allows bots to browse its Coach and Kate Spade sites but currently restricts them from completing transactions. Consumer appetite for the technology remains low, as an NMI survey shows only 3% of U.S. adults trust AI to complete purchases, and VML data indicates one-third of active AI users refuse to let bots buy or reorder products. Emarketer principal analyst Sky Canaves: “There is this view in tech circles that consumers don’t like shopping. But we actually do like going to the grocery store. Consumers still like to make their decisions themselves and be in charge, especially where money is concerned.” (link)
Here are three big ideas from yesterday’s edition of CFO.ticker…
➤ The C-Suite AI Pivot: Healthcare and finance are aggressively appointing Chief AI Officers, with nearly 20% of corporations expected to follow suit by 2027. It’s less about simple headcount cuts and more about managing advanced agentic tech.
➤ Stadiums as 365-Day Assets: Teams are weaponizing architecture—like pixelated seating bowls—to artificially manufacture broadcast energy. Modern billion-dollar venues must hustle year-round across multiple entertainment formats to justify their price tags.
➤ Unlocking Franchise Value: MSG Sports is splitting the Knicks and Rangers into standalone publicly traded powerhouses to maximize market returns. Meanwhile, private capital is heavily funding sports real estate and higher-ed talent pipelines.

CREATIVE CONSIDERATIONS…
Sports properties are expanding in-house content creation and monetization divisions to accelerate execution and deepen player trust, according to SBJ's Abe Madkour. Highlighting team structures as described during an AXS DRIVE panel, Madkour notes the Atlanta Hawks deploy 23 staff members in Hawks Studios under SVP/Executive Director Matt Bunting to manage 1,500 annual projects averaging seven assets each across 50+ sponsors, while the Chicago Fire keep creative in-house under CMO Dan Moriarty to handle 95% of projects without external agencies. Meanwhile, Chicago Bulls VP of Content Marketing Luka Dukich oversees a 30-person team—among the largest in the NBA—reporting to EVP of Brand and Public Affairs Susan Goodenow. Dukich detailed the core attributes the franchise seeks when recruiting creative talent: "Are they making content themselves? … Do they have their own TikTok account? Do they write a blog? Do they have a podcast? … Are they doing it? Do they understand it? Do they understand how to reach people? You can mold it from there, but they have to have that drive and creativity there." (link)
Meanwhile in the NFL, the Houston Texans launched Hustle Town Studio, a content production house designed to co-fund and produce non-football media rather than solely collecting IP fees, according to SBJ's Ben Fischer. Conceived by team President Mike Tomon and CMO Doug Vosik, the studio will operate out of the franchise's planned Toro District mixed-use development to produce programming covering Houston culture, music, and the McNair family's LOVB volleyball franchise. Vosik: "It’s really about smart growth and managing risk. We’re in no rush here. We’re going to find the right projects that have the right setup, the right partnerships and the right economics. So part of it is just to temper extreme ambition where the risk goes up." (link)
Digiday’s Sam Bradley observes that mid-tier advertisers including Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, Opella, and BetMGM are expanding in-house creative operations through generative AI platforms like Pencil and Adora to scale asset production. Wyndham, for instance, increased its digital creative output 15-fold while cutting concepting and approval timelines by 75%, driving a 6-times improvement in site visit rates. Consumer healthcare firm Opella scaled production 20-fold to top 20,000 creative assets, while BetMGM deploys Arcana AI alongside its 120-person team to support a $160M annual media spend. Wyndham GVP of Loyalty, Guest Engagement, and Strategic Partnerships Mike Shiwdin describes the targeting flexibility provided by automated creative generation: "It allows us to showcase the breadth of our portfolio around the world, and ensure we are showcasing the right assets to an audience who’s looking for all-inclusive versus the urban city destination. ... We’ve seen a six times improvement in site visit rate over our benchmark." (link)
The Athletic's staff writers Mark Lazerus, Julian McKenzie, Shayna Goldman, and Sean Gentille ranked all 32 NHL center-ice logos for the 2026-27 season, placing the Vegas Golden Knights at No. 1, followed by the San Jose Sharks (No. 2), Carolina Hurricanes (T-3), Florida Panthers (T-3), Los Angeles Kings (No. 5), Nashville Predators (No. 6), Buffalo Sabres (No. 7), Toronto Maple Leafs (No. 8), Montreal Canadiens (No. 9), and in a tie at No. 10, the New York Islanders and Ottawa Senators. The Golden Knights captured the top ranking by designing their center ice to resemble a roulette wheel, leaning directly into casino-themed aesthetics. McKenzie: "The Golden Knights have always playfully leaned into what makes Vegas so, well, Vegas: the showmanship, the glamor and the gambling. You get a little bit of everything with this center-ice logo, which is rightfully one of the league’s best." Check them all out. (link)
COMMERCIAL CALCULUS…
Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris toured Tottenham Hotspur Stadium while evaluating venue concepts for the franchise's planned $3.8B stadium in Washington D.C. Sportico's Eben Novy-Williams reports the 63K-seat, $1.3B London venue—built with millions in financial contributions from the NFL—helped elevate Tottenham Hotspur's valuation to $3.5B by increasing matchday revenue from $58.9M in 2016-17 to $173.3M in 2024-25, while also generating $105.9M from non-soccer events such as NFL games, concerts, and an F1-branded go-kart track. Harris confirms that “we’ve walked around that stadium a couple times. What we’re trying to do is take the best of every stadium and bring it to the new site." (link)
Arsenal has ruled out a move to significantly expand the 60,704-seat Emirates Stadium, opting instead to enhance the existing fan experience and hospitality offerings, according to The Athletic's Colin Millar. The club formed a working group in 2024, led by CEO Richard Garlick, to explore extensive additions to the venue, which has maintained its original capacity since opening in 2006. Facing the logistical challenge of potentially relocating home matches during major construction, leadership decided to focus on smaller upgrades, including retail improvements and the introduction of safe standing. The club addressed the decision during a supporters' meeting, explaining: "We shared a commitment to the continued evolution of Emirates Stadium, rather than a huge-scale masterplan, building on improvement we have made to date in partnership with our catering partner, Legends, the introduction of safe standing (this season in the Clock End, and next season in the North Bank), improving hospitality and retail experiences, and upgrading visitor experiences." (link)
Swiss Super League club FC Sion has provided an update on its plans for a new stadium, which will feature a rollercoaster-style monorail, per The Stadium Business’ Bradley Rial, who notes: “It is hoped the stadium, which will cost CHF450m (£410M/€483M/$541M), will be open by 2029.” Have a look at the renderings. (link)
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s immediate ban on online sports betting threatens roughly 1B reais ($191M) in annual sponsorship revenue for top professional football clubs, according to Bloomberg's Felipe Saturnino and Fernando Travaglini, who note the move endangers agreements that account for 34% of total commercial revenues across major teams, creating financial strain for an industry where total debt climbed 15% to 17.3B reais despite record total revenues of 14.3B reais. Representatives from dozens of clubs and football organizations addressed the threat to team operations in a joint letter protesting the decision: “The consequence will not only be to throw the door wide open to illegal betting, but also to deal a fatal blow to Brazilian football, pushing many clubs into insolvency.” (link)
The Chicago Cubs secured a legal victory after U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman granted summary judgment and a permanent injunction blocking Wrigley View Rooftop from selling tickets to watch games and events at Wrigley Field, according to Sportico's Michael McCann. The ruling endorsed the team's argument that the unapproved business misappropriates live games without paying royalties, citing a 1938 legal precedent set by the Pittsburgh Pirates establishing protected visibility rights for enclosed venues. Coleman granted summary judgment on unjust enrichment, trademark infringement, and unfair competition, barring Wrigley View Rooftop from using Cubs trademarks or selling tickets. The decision protects commercial revenue for a franchise carrying a $274M payroll, though the defendant may appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Coleman highlighted the equitable principle protecting live event investments: “Unfairly capitalizing on another’s labor and expenses offends principles of justice, equity, and good conscience.” (link)
