THE TOP LINE

Is your brand the star of the show, or just the stage?

That's just one scene-stealing question in today's CRO.ticker. Three more worth weighing:

ONE BIG IDEA

Access is the new premium. Arsenal, the Heat and the Nets aren't just selling better seats; they're selling closeness to the players, the tunnel and the practice court.

ONE NUMBER

70%
of viewers of the Cubs' TikTok microdrama were women 18 to 34, and more than 70% didn't already follow the team.

ONE QUOTE

“What does it take to deliver creativity at this scale and speed? It requires a creative vision and definition embedded into everything we do.”

SPHERE OF INFLUENCE

MLB turns the postseason into a stage for 200+ creators

Major League Baseball significantly expanded its influencer marketing strategy for the 2026 postseason, hosting over 200 content creators at games projected to generate more than 100M organic video views. The strategy yielded immediate results when tested during the 2025 postseason, when 130 unpaid influencers produced 1,150 pieces of content driving 86M views—a sharp increase from the 2024 playoffs, during which 32 paid creators generated 48M views. During the 2026 regular season, MLB partnered with 250 influencers to create 3,000 pieces of content, culminating in over 300M views. MLB VP of Social Media and Innovation Cameron Gidari: "Something [Director of Influencer Strategy] Rachel [Richter] told me when she first got here was, 'We’re a stage—we can just be the stage.' They want a stage to create from, and so we found that that has allowed us to not only broaden the types of influencers that we’re working with, it’s allowed us to ramp up the total number of influencers that we work with throughout the season.”

The Cubs bet on a TikTok romance microdrama

Chicago Cubs EVP of Marketing and Communications Jen Martindale joined the Ad Age Marketer's Brief podcast to discuss the organization's launch of a 17-episode scripted TikTok microdrama aimed at expanding the team's audience among young women. The franchise produced the romance series entirely in-house on a minimal budget to mitigate financial risk and successfully captured a non-traditional baseball demographic while generating roughly 7M views. Analytics showed 70% of viewers were women between the ages of 18 and 34, and more than 70% did not previously follow the team's social account. Martindale…

➤ On rooting the campaign in authentic stadium traditions: "I don’t know if you’ve had the pleasure of spending any time in Chicago or at Wrigley Field, but thousands of people have met their significant others at Wrigley Field. It is a true phenomenon. And there’s a place in Wrigley Field where this is really ground zero, and that’s the Budweiser Bleachers. ... So this is not based on their story, but it is rooted very much in a phenomenon that we know exists."

➤ On relying on in-house talent to maintain a low production budget: "[W]e did the bulk of this ourselves on a shoestring budget. I should clarify that we’ve worked really hard over the last several years, even predating my arrival at the Cubs, to build out the internal infrastructure to have a very high-performing content department. ... I think the quality transcended the budget we spent on this."

➤ On collaborating with TikTok to bypass the core baseball fanbase and target specific algorithmic subcommunities: "[TikTok] helped us with strategic targeting for the organic content. But then they also did something else, which is they took this series and they put it into what they call their microdrama container, which is a whole separate area of TikTok where they’re starting to house all of these types of scripted series."

➤ Did the team field any pushback on the series? "[I] think the biggest point of discussion, and it wasn’t really pushback, it was more, let’s really think through this and have a plan, was, how is this going to land with our avid fans? This is not the sort of content that the men who are here to see game highlights or player interviews are looking for. So what’s our plan for that? And thankfully we had thought that through and worked with TikTok on a few fronts. We were going to be really careful that this was only going to live on TikTok. TikTok is a place where, of all of our platforms, we probably had what I’d call the most variety of content. Lots of different types of things. So we were like, it’s going to live on TikTok."

➤ On the shifting boundary between brand marketing and pure entertainment content:

“The line between marketing and entertainment is continuing to blur, and brands have to get comfortable with stepping into content where the product isn’t the focal point. I mean, in the case of our series, yes, the action is unfolding at a Cubs game at Wrigley Field, but Wrigley Field is almost a secondary character to the action on the screen.
— Jen Martindale, EVP of Marketing and Communications, Chicago Cubs

Influencer fatigue meets a $43.9B creator economy

Despite broader concerns about influencer fatigue, the creator economy is projected to reach $43.9B in U.S. ad spending by 2026, according to the Association of National Advertisers. Brands continue to invest heavily in the space, with over 80% of marketers planning to increase their influencer budgets over the next year, per Sprout Social, and Marketing Dive’s Sara Karlovitch notes that data shows the strategy still converts, as 58% of consumers report purchasing a product based on an influencer endorsement. However, the ecosystem is evolving as costs escalate and platforms shift toward interest-based algorithms rather than purely follower-driven metrics. Whisker CMO Hew Loyd noted that while the space originally focused on organic content, the introduction of creator management agencies has fundamentally altered the financial dynamics for marketers: "So, at a very early point, [influencer marketing] was about great content. The platforms and the algorithms themselves have shifted…it has become a business model. And anytime it turns into a business model, it attracts agencies who manage these individuals and broker these deals. And it also becomes an increasingly more expensive place for brands to play.”

J.Crew's biggest launch ever came from a creator

As you undoubtedly know, J.Crew partnered with Gen Z creator Emma Chamberlain to launch its Tiny Rollneck sweater, fueling the biggest product launch in the company's 43-year history with first-day sales more than tripling projections. Despite the retailer's overall revenue remaining flat at $3B last year while total units sold fell 10%, per The Financial Times, the creator-led marketing shift has successfully generated organic social momentum. Ad Age’s Gillian Follett notes the Chamberlain campaign drove nearly 600 organic posts within a week, boosting overall brand mentions by 12% and engagement by 25%, according to media intelligence firm Meltwater. A subsequent campaign featuring comedy trio Please Don't Destroy yielded similar results, lifting engagement by 36% compared to the prior 29 days. J.Crew CMO Julia Collier manages the brand's casting in-house to foster direct relationships and prioritize cultural buzz over strict ROI metrics and tells Follett: "Brands today are shaped by people, not really by the brands themselves. Everyone has an opinion, and they go to social to talk about it. And that conversation around your brand is what shapes your perception. So, for [brands], creators are how you define yourself in the modern era."

The A's design a Las Vegas ballpark with no concession stands

A’s SVP of Technology Vikrant Bodalia explained to the Las Vegas Review-Journal's Mick Akers how the organization is leaning heavily into technological innovations for its new $2.1B, 33K-seat ballpark in Las Vegas. After previously helping launch both T-Mobile Arena and Allegiant Stadium, Bodalia noted the industry's shift toward prioritizing tech integration, explaining the A's plan to eliminate traditional concessions in favor of grab-and-go markets and utilize immersive video boards to elevate the fan experience beyond the on-field product. More key takeaways…

➤ Bodalia on technology's role in stadium development: “When I was part of the opening in 2015 at T-Mobile Arena, technology did not have a seat at the table. ... The cornerstone pillar is the technology and how it weaves the whole fabric together from ticketing — we have gone to paperless tickets — to now frictionless markets.”

➤ Bodalia on using technology to create a cinematic atmosphere: “The [video] boards are going to be designed so that when fans are leaving home, you’re going to feel like you’re watching all those Avengers movies where you just feel emotions and drama and entertainment. So, it’s not about just the win or loss on the field — those are going to happen — but when fans come in, we want to have them leave with that cinematic, immersive experience and go home energized."

➤ President of Baseball Operations Taylor Smith on the stadium's appeal to potential players: “I do think it will become a very compelling destination for players. I think it will be a really strong selling point for the ability to live here year-round. The golf scene, I think there’s a lot of things that make it a very attractive spot.”

➤ Bodalia on plans to eliminate traditional concessions:

“We are designing not to have any traditional concession stands. Everything is going to be some sort of a grab-and-go market style, even for hot and cold items.
— Vikrant Bodalia, SVP of Technology, A’s

Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment completed the third phase of a five-year, $150M-plus transformation of Barclays Center ahead of the Brooklyn Nets' 2026-27 season. The upgrades, designed by Populous and managed by Shawmut Design and Construction, feature a 9,000-square-foot event-level club with interactive food stations run by Levy, a 93-foot LED screen, and views of the team's practice court. The project also introduced a new American Express lounge on the suite level and the arena's first major control room update since opening in 2012. The redesigned main atrium now includes a 180-degree LED wall and a custom art installation built from 550 LED screens. The final two phases of the renovation will target the upper concourse. MLB rebuilds memorabilia authentication with pitch-by-pitch data

Major League Baseball is overhauling its 25-year-old authentication program with new fourth-generation tracking technology to verify the legitimacy of memorabilia, The Athletic’s Caleb Mezzy reports, noting the system utilizes real-time, pitch-by-pitch data to document game-used equipment. Initially launched in 2001 following the FBI's Operation Bullpen—which exposed that roughly 90% of sports memorabilia on the market was fraudulent—the program employs retired and off-duty law enforcement officers who personally witness and catalog items. Authenticators use a tablet-based system to record granular data for every authenticated ball, including the pitcher, batter, inning, pitch count, pitch velocity, launch angle, and exit velocity. The verified items receive a tamper-proof holographic sticker with a unique serial number that fans can research through a public online database. MLB Deputy Commissioner of Business and Media Noah Garden and Authentication Program VP Michael Posner: "Every year, with new advancements, we can do things that we couldn't do a few years ago. If I see something that's even remotely applicable to what we're doing, we're going to dive into it and see where it goes. And I think that's where we're continuing to do the work, even as we speak. On programs that will expand our reach and create a better experience for customers."

P.F. Chang's "barbell strategy" to win back diners

P.F. Chang's CMO Holly Smith in a sitdown with Marketing Dive’s Chris Kelly talks about the company's "barbell strategy," combining value-driven offerings like a revamped happy hour with premium, theatrical dining experiences to capture both price-sensitive consumers and those seeking a "big-night-out." Smith also explains how the brand is leveraging micro-creators and localized freelance teams to reintroduce itself to younger demographics, particularly Gen Z diners whose early adulthood restaurant habits were disrupted by the pandemic. Key takeaways…

➤ On the initial marketing challenge when joining the company: "When I talked to friends and family about the opportunity, everyone said the same thing: 'I used to love to go to P.F. Chang’s.' That excited me so much because I felt like at its core, everybody loves this brand. It has such a nostalgic feeling when you think about places that you used to love to go to. How do we reinvigorate that feeling within people and get them coming back into the restaurants?"

➤ On utilizing theatrical menu items to drive social engagement: "We launched a 'Summer in Tokyo' campaign with a sushi boat that came out to the table with dry ice and it smoked all over the table. Instantly we knew this was going to be something that would take off if we did it in the right way on social media, and it really did: To date we had $2M in sales of sushi boats."

➤ On the internal push to integrate artificial intelligence for data analysis: "The big buzzy question is always around AI and how it plays into our world. I’m looking at AI around the reporting and data side of things. We’ve just partnered with a company that’s going to build an internal AI system for us that uses our own context layers to help us be more efficient in our marketing."

➤ On the opportunity to re-educate younger consumers on the dining experience:

“Gen Z is 30 years old. They have families. They have good jobs. They can afford to go out to eat. But the other thing about Gen Z is they missed out on five years during COVID of enjoying going out to eat. We’re showing that younger generation how to go out to eat again, how it can be fun and giving them reasons to come back into dining rooms.
— Holly Smith, CMO, P.F. Chang's

NFL sponsors' stadium signage comes to Madden

SBJ reports that “official sponsors of all 32 NFL clubs and league sponsors have the chance to bring their real-world stadium presence into the corresponding stadium in Madden NFL, on console and mobile. The move is part of a deal between Electronic Arts (EA) and the NFL called the EA Sports Madden NFL Virtual Stadium Sponsorship Program. Law firm Pond Lehocky, an Eagles sponsor, will be the first brand to take part. Its Lincoln Financial Field signage will appear in the Eagles’ stadium in the game.”

LA28 unveils "Stars Align"

LA28 organizers debuted their official Games slogan, "Stars Align," launching a 60-second promotional video ahead of the Olympics opening in 20 months. The campaign video features the Red Hot Chili Peppers track "Can't Stop" and will anchor the committee's messaging for upcoming milestones, including ticketing rollouts, the mascot reveal, and the torch relay. LA28 CMO Alex Merchan: "We think it works for so many different reasons. Yes, in Los Angeles, this is the city of dreams. Yes, there’s a Walk of Fame and yes, it’s known for celebrity. And yeah, maybe even a nod to the ‘84 games with the emblem that had stars in motion, but we think naturally it translates well across the country. The idea of ‘Stars Align’ we think will work anywhere between Manhattan, New York or Manhattan, Kansas, small town or big city."

Miller Lite cans the moment the Brewers clinched

Molson Coors North America CMO Sofia Colucci shared on LinkedIn that Miller Lite released "Clinch Cans" to celebrate the Milwaukee Brewers winning the franchise's first World Series title, filling them with the beer being brewed in Milwaukee at 10:13 p.m., the exact moment the team won. Colucci credited field, legal and communications teams and the company's brewers with executing the idea at the speed of the moment: "Our team could have just made a commemorative can. But instead they pushed for an idea that perfectly captured the spirit of the Brewers’ win aligned with Miller Lite’s DNA." Take a look at the custom can design.
