Is a World Cup sponsorship an investment in the brand or just borrowed attention?
That’s just one of the questions framing the newest CRO.ticker. Here are three key takeaways from today’s edition:
➤ Big events are only as valuable as what they leave behind. The value of a mega-event sponsorship is decided after the final whistle, by whether it builds demand that outlasts the tournament.
➤ The capacity gap is being closed with systems, not headcount. Marketing teams are expected to move faster with the same staff, and always-on content engines are replacing one-off campaigns.
➤ Behavior is overtaking sentiment as the metric that counts. More organizations are measuring what fans and customers actually do, from what they buy to when they arrive, rather than how they say they feel.
Scroll down for the 30K sausages Brewers fans ate in two World Series games, the earlier gates that lifted Bournemouth’s pre-match sales 42%, and the NBA Finals court wood Michelob Ultra turned into bottle openers.
THE URGENCY ECONOMY…
A new report from Demandbase reveals that 72% of marketing teams are the same size or smaller than two years ago, even as 70% of marketers face shorter timelines. Here’s more of what you need to know…
➤ The study identified processes and cross-functional workflows as the primary productivity obstacle for 56% of respondents, while 21% blame technology stacks and data. Despite the pressure, 49% of teams report no change in junior headcount, and 50% of companies are bringing more work in-house rather than outsourcing.
➤ Marketers are actively adjusting to the new landscape, with 35% tracking how their brand appears in AI searches, 62% altering their AI search strategy, and 64% attempting to influence how AI describes their brand. Professionals expect the disruption to accelerate, as 74% anticipate their roles will change more over the next two years, compared to just 2% who expect less change.
➤ Demandbase CEO Gabe Rogol on the necessity of adopting new systems to manage the workload: "AI has already driven system-level change in areas like engineering, but marketing hasn’t made the same leap due to the complexity involved in bringing products to market. Agentic marketing is the only way to give marketers the capacity they need to move at the speed they’re expected to, by pulling them out of the weeds and freeing them to do more creative and strategic work." Milwaukee Brewers fans purchased more than 300K food and beverage items—averaging nearly four items per person—during Games 1 and 2 of the World Series at American Family Field, according to SBJ's Mike Mazzeo. Delaware North reported the volume included 30K sausages (led by 11K brats and 10K hot dogs), 7K orders of peanuts, 3,500 pretzels, 3K cheese curds, and 3K postseason specialty items, while souvenir sales quadrupled the figures generated during the NLCS. The hospitality provider employs 800 to 1K game-day staffers to manage the demand, flying in 40 workers from organizations like the Green Bay Packers, Texas Rangers, and Atlanta Braves. Delaware North Sportservice GM Kevin Jezewski: “It takes a Delaware North army. It’s not just a local event. It’s a worldwide event. We have people coming from all over the world to try our food, and for us it’s important that Milwaukee’s food scene is shown well throughout this ballpark.” (link)
The market for custom postseason baseball apparel requires independent designers and players' partners to navigate expedited production schedules and licensing restrictions to produce team-themed gear, The Athletic’s Charlotte Varnes reports, noting that custom jackets cost up to $300, and companies like Tiny Turnip and BroDenim process urgent orders from organizations like the Tampa Bay Rays and Milwaukee Brewers in under four days. Because smaller designers cannot legally use official MLB logos, partners frequently build outfits around overnight-shipped retail items from Aritzia or Revolve, customizing the apparel with player numbers and team colors to ensure the clothing remains usable if a player changes franchises. Kirsten Grimes, fiancée of Rays catcher Liam Hicks, stated that the custom items serve as permanent mementos of playoff runs in a transient industry: "Some of us will be here next year, but a lot of us only spend one season together. So it’s kind of cool to have these pieces to look at because for a lot of us, it’s our first World Series. For Liam and I, it’s our first postseason. So we’ll always have these pieces to remember that." (link)
Job Market Trends: College.town's Brian Bowsher Breaks Down Hiring Data
In the latest episode of the NACMA Timeout Podcast, College.town Senior Director of Integrated Marketing Brian Bowsher joins host Zach Dayton to unpack the latest collegiate athletics hiring data from CollegeSports.jobs. Analyzing year-over-year trends, Bowsher details how the industry is recovering from administrative contractions surrounding the 2025 House settlement and aggressively prioritizing commercial growth and frontline staffing. Key Takeaways:
➤ The "Revenue Year" Rebound: After a staggering 50% drop in Division I job postings in 2025, overall job volume has stabilized in 2026 with current year hiring concentrated on revenue generation roles.
➤ A Shifting Org Chart: Department structures are evolving to prioritize the top and bottom of the organizational chart, as senior executive-level postings grew by 16% and entry-level roles jumped 38%, while Assistant and Associate AD positions experienced a 9% decline.
➤ Skill Sets and the AI Frontier: While standalone NIL roles are flattening, explicit mentions of AI in job descriptions have more than tripled year-over-year which draws parallels to the early days of sports-marketer social media adaptation.
THE RETURN ON RELEVANCE…
Adidas is preparing to report quarterly earnings as investors evaluate the long-term impact of a $1B marketing push that recently drove down the company's stock price. The brand equipped 14 teams and absorbed a 30% spike in marketing and point-of-sale expenses during the World Cup, running campaigns featuring Lionel Messi and actor Timothée Chalamet. Deutsche Bank analysts project the company will report between €250M and €350M ($280M to $393M) in tournament-related sales for the third quarter, while Morning Consult research indicates the campaign successfully elevated purchase consideration among male consumers into September. Adidas CEO Bjørn Gulden defended the elevated financial commitments to attendees at a recent Fast Company conference: "We have to remember that if we spend 2, 3, 4, 500 million, whatever the number is, it is not for the event. It’s for the future of the brand." (link)
Meanwhile, McDonald's will end its 30-year global sponsorship of the FIFA World Cup to reconfigure its marketing approach following a disappointing quarter where U.S. same-store sales rose just 0.8%. The restaurant chain will maintain other athletic partnerships, including acquiring the naming rights for a Chicago soccer stadium used by Chicago Fire FC—to be called McDonald's Park—and deals with Formula 1 in Latin America, Ligue 1 McDonald's in France, and the McDonald's All-American Games. The company clarified the separation is unrelated to ongoing political tensions between FIFA and UEFA, but rather stems from an underwhelming return on its recent 100-market World Cup activation. CMO Morgan Flatley: “I think we’ve become overly reliant on borrowed IP. And I think we need to be very selective and do it a few times versus becoming a frequent piece of our calendar.” (link)
Premier League club AFC Bournemouth has recorded a more than 40% increase in pre-match food and beverage sales following initial renovations to Vitality Stadium. The club installed a new perimeter fence and relocated ticket checkpoints to encourage earlier arrivals, resulting in more than 10,000 fans entering the stadium footprint 32 minutes before a recent match against AC Milan. The Stadium Business’ Richard Mulligan notes the upgrades serve as the first phase of a broader expansion project that added 800 seats this season and will ultimately increase overall capacity to approximately 20,200. President of Business Operations Jim Frevola: "The amount of people that are congregating on the concourse now, the perimeter of the ground now that it’s open, has been unbelievable. I can tell you that the amount of food and beverage that’s consumed pre-match now is way up. Way, way up. We’re up about 42%, and it’s unbelievable. The revenue’s nice, don’t get me wrong, but it’s about the experience." (link)
cllct’s Darren Rovell reports Michelob Ultra made bottle openers out of NBA Finals court wood to give to bartenders throughout New York City, adding: “As collectibles become hotter and hotter, we at cllct expect more partners to use relics to activate and draw attention to their relationships.” (link)
THE PREDICTIVE ADVANTAGE…
The World Surf League (WSL) has partnered with sports marketing agency Two Circles to build a proprietary fan intelligence database to compensate for a lack of traditional box office metrics from its free-admission beach events. The initiative aggregates merchandise purchases, fantasy game engagement, and survey data to divide audiences into four specific segments, mimicking the Fan Genome platform utilized by Major League Soccer to track over 1,000 individual data points, according to Marketing Brew’s Alyssa Meyers. The league intends to use targeted social media content and athlete collaborations to convert casual followers into dedicated consumers ahead of the sport's upcoming Olympic appearance at LA28, and former WSL Director of Global and North America Marketing Travis Tan says: “With the growth of participation in surfing, the growth of the types of people surfing, the emergence of wave-pool technology that’s bringing surfing inland, and surfing being in the Olympics, it’s opened up the awareness around surfing and access to it. That is our next great fanbase to build and to reach.” (link)
Coca-Cola Global CMO Manolo Arroyo initiated a marketing overhaul in 2020 to address lagging consumer recruitment and fragmented product operations. Arroyo trimmed the company’s portfolio from over 400 brands down to roughly 170, a roster that features 32 billion-dollar labels including Sprite, Fanta, Powerade, and Minute Maid. The company also shifted its media mix, increasing digital spending from less than 30% in 2019 to a projected 70% by the end of the year. The revised approach has generated 160M new consumers while driving top-line growth, expanding margins, and increasing return on invested capital. Arroyo: "We decided to shift to total consumer base, which is a behavioral-driven metric, as the primary correlation and causation of growth in our P&L, and then understand which equity drivers really impact behavioral change for which audiences. ... [Brand] love can be increased as well, but it follows the behavior, and that has translated immediately in our volume growth, in our transactions growth and therefore in our P&L." (link)
The Clorox Company is abandoning traditional marketing campaigns in favor of AI-assisted continuous content systems, according to Marketing Dive's Chris Kelly. CMO Eric Schwartz explained the new strategy at the Association of National Advertisers Masters of Marketing conference, noting the company uses social listening and automation to rapidly scale relevant content for brands like Pine-Sol, Brita, and Hidden Valley. The approach generated measurable returns, with Pine-Sol averaging 150 organic posts monthly for a 13% engagement rate, and Brita driving 22M engagements, an 8.17% engagement rate, and a 1,742% year-over-year increase in organic impressions. Hidden Valley also capitalized on a viral TSA post during the World Cup, rapidly producing 600 pieces of content that yielded 6B impressions and 2,500 media placements. Schwartz: "Our old instincts won’t keep up. Sometimes they won’t even be right. The only solution to match the pace is learning to build systems of continuous relevance." (link)
Walmart and Target are deploying artificial intelligence to forecast consumer demand and automate routine shopping experiences. According to eMarketer, 47.1M US consumers will use generative AI for personalized shopping recommendations this year, a figure projected to reach 72.1M by 2030, and CDW Director of Strategic Industries Andy Szanger noted that Target relies on an AI tool called Trend Brain to scan social media platforms like TikTok and Reddit, allowing the retailer to identify viral products and adjust inventory before demand peaks. Walmart combines weather data with supply chain simulations to position inventory ahead of time, while also tracking individual household purchasing frequencies for staple grocery items. Walmart EVP of AI Acceleration, Product and Design Daniel Danker: "I think that AI will enable us to do things like take the essentials, the milk, and put it on autopilot. But I think that putting it on autopilot, recognizing the right frequency for your household so there’s never too much, never too little, taking the effort out of the bits that you do every single week, and then putting some delight into the pieces that have felt like chores through true personalization."
