Is the second row the new courtside?
The Knicks' richest fans seem to think so. For about half the price, you get a seat behind Timothée Chalamet and a spot in a thousand photos. Three more things worth weighing in today's CRO.ticker:
ONE BIG IDEA
Winning helps. Brand carries. Patrick Crakes says the real prize of a title is enterprise value a decade later, while Manchester United's Avram Glazer argues brands like United, the Yankees and the Cowboys are effectively insulated from poor results.

BRAND OVER BOX SCORE
Championships pay off a decade later
Encore Sports & Entertainment CEO Nick Kelly, Next League Chief AI & Innovation Officer Shripal Shah, DIRIGO Advisory Founder John Brody and Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes joined the JohnWallStreet podcast to discuss how franchises convert championship runs into sustained enterprise value. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ Brody on resisting the urge to extract immediate revenue from existing corporate partners: "Prosperity gives you friends. Adversity proves them. We were there for you when you sucked. We were there for you when you went five years without a postseason appearance. Be my friend and my partner. Don't try to ring the cash register."
➤ Shah on the necessity of modern data infrastructure to capture new fans: "[The Philadelphia Union] rebuilt their entire fan data stack with Databricks...and now they can run hundreds of audience syncs a month with a 90% cut in time that it takes to build a segment. That means if the Union have a moment, a cup run, a big signing, they can find everyone who touched it and act in the same days."
➤ Crakes on the ultimate financial goal of a title run: "The real financial prize in winning a championship is in enterprise value a decade later. ... The real value in winning a championship isn't what you earn celebrating it. It's how you make the franchise more valuable over time because you won it."
Glazer says United is insulated from losing
In contrast to John Brody’s comments above, Manchester United co-owner Avram Glazer told attendees at Deutsche Bank’s inaugural Sports Investment Conference in London that global sports brands of United's caliber are effectively insulated from poor on-field performance. Speaking to more than 350 investors and operators, Glazer reportedly compared the club's commercial durability to the New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys – franchises that maintain record valuations despite decades-long championship droughts. The sentiment mirrors former Executive Vice-Chairman Ed Woodward's controversial 2018 assertion that playing performance "doesn’t really have a meaningful impact on what we can do on the commercial side of the business." While United's commercial revenue has plateaued from £276M in 2018 to £317M in 2026, the club's heritage continues to command premium sponsorship rates, recently culminating in a record £10M+ access fee from Amazon for an 'All or Nothing' documentary.
Chelsea's owner is tied to a ticket resale site
Clearlake, the private equity firm that owns Chelsea FC, operates a U.S.-based ticket resale platform that recently sold Premier League tickets to U.K. consumers at inflated prices, according to the London Times. Clearlake owns Victory Live, which in turn operates events365.com, a site that listed unauthorized tickets for 19 Premier League clubs—excluding Chelsea—before scrubbing the inventory when contacted by reporters. Chelsea Chair and Clearlake Co-Founder Behdad Eghbali serves as a director for Victory Live, creating a direct conflict with the football club's strict anti-scalping policies. While unauthorized ticket resale is illegal in the U.K., foreign-registered companies exploit a geographic loophole to bypass enforcement. Reporters Martyn Ziegler and Matthew Hobart-Williams pointed out the contradiction between the ownership group's corporate ventures and the club's public stance:
“Chelsea have warned fans they face lifetime bans if they are found selling tickets through unauthorised platforms.”

Moneyball's Second Act: How baseball's low-payroll winners keep beating the big spenders
The Milwaukee Brewers won the World Series with baseball's 19th-ranked payroll, and it wasn't a one-year story: it was their eighth postseason in nine years. College.town's interactive report goes inside the analytics operations behind the Brewers, Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Guardians, and what an athletic department competing against richer conference rivals might borrow. A few highlights…
➤ Milwaukee won 103 games with a $125.5M payroll and 46 full-time analysts, well above the MLB average of about 28. The New York Mets carried the sport's largest payroll and finished 74–88.
➤ The money isn't the whole story. The report points to habits these clubs share: keeping the message to players small, hiring analysts who can talk to coaches, pairing data with some of baseball's largest scouting staffs, and keeping their people for years. It also walks through 23 MLB analytics job postings from this fall, from data engineers to AI engineers.
WHAT FANS WILL PAY FOR
The Knicks' second row outsells courtside 3-to-1
Ultra-wealthy executives are increasingly passing on courtside seats at New York Knicks games in favor of the second row to avoid exorbitant resale markups, according to The Wall Street Journal's Andrew Zucker. Data from SeatGeek showed front-row tickets listed at over $13K just weeks before the home opener, compared to $7.1K for the row immediately behind them. StubHub reported that purchases for these second-row spots—which run roughly a third of the price of floor seats—are three times higher than courtside transactions. Medallion Financial CEO Andrew Murstein noted the unique business opportunities generated by sitting just behind high-profile stars, recently closing a $55M preferred-stock raise after a Piper Sandler executive spotted him on the television broadcast:
“The first row frequently are A-list celebrities. The second row are people that could afford to have their own team. ... When you’re in the second row and you’re behind Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner, you’re in a thousand pictures.”
— Andrew Murstein, CEO, Medallion Financial
The Ducks' Disney-era jersey sets a sales record
The Anaheim Ducks set a modern franchise merchandise record with the launch of their Hometown Remix jersey, selling over 2,000 sweaters at the team store within 24 hours to mark the highest single-day total since the club's 1993 NHL debut. The design features the original green, purple, and yellow color palette from the Disney film franchise and quickly became the only one of 32 league-wide releases to sell out on the Fanatics platform. Total merchandise sales eclipsed 4,000 units across the first three days, fueled by leaked images that initially bypassed the official marketing timeline. CMO Merit Tully acknowledged the financial windfall of the nostalgic alternative, but dismissed online calls to abandon the club's recent primary color overhaul:
“We love the passion behind it, that there are certain people that want to go to that full-time. But there’s a chorus of people also that love the orange look as well. You want to do the right thing for the long term, and I think this will be a jersey that you’ll see people wear at the arena for, I’m sure, years and years to come. ... We’re certainly not shying away from it. But we’re committed to orange.”
— Merit Tully, CMO, Anaheim Ducks
Molson Coors turned a Brewers run into a 12-day sprint
Molson Coors capitalized on its long-term sponsorship of the Milwaukee Brewers through a series of rapid marketing activations during the team's World Series run. The Milwaukee Business Journal's Rich Kirchen reports the company, which prominently features Miller Lite, Miller High Life, and Leinenkugel’s inside the stadium, offered statewide beer rebates for Game 1 and distributed commemorative hats to the first 120 fans at its local brewery tours. The brand also deployed a mobile dive bar after the championship parade to cover $414 bar tabs at various local stops. To mark the 44-year gap since the franchise's last World Series appearance, Molson Coors produced 4,400 blue Miller Lite clinch cans that sold out within 30 minutes. CMO Sofia Colucci: "The commemorative-cans project was 'a late-night idea' that the company turned around in 12 days."
The Hornets buy a $97.8M property for $27.5M
The Charlotte Hornets partnered with Lincoln Property Co. and Vision Ventures to purchase Queen City Quarter, a mixed-use development adjacent to Spectrum Center, for $27.5M—a steep discount from its $97.8M county valuation. The acquisition follows the franchise's recent $20.5M purchase of two nearby uptown buildings as co-chairs Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall assemble the real estate required to build a sports entertainment hub dubbed the "Hive District." Charlotte Business Journal reporters Elise Franco and Erik Spanberg outlined how the acquisition fits into the ownership group's broader vision for the arena:
“The Spectrum Center’s improving fortunes make this an ideal time for [the owners] to begin working on the surrounding area. The Hornets’ partnership on the acquisition is a major financial statement by Plotkin and Schnall, that they intend to back up their vows to transform uptown Charlotte. ... [They] want Spectrum Center to rival Atlanta’s State Farm Arena as a must-stop for major concerts and other events coming through the Southeast.”
— Elise Franco and Erik Spanberg, Charlotte Business Journal

AI does the busywork, but buyers still want a human
Artificial intelligence is automating administrative sales tasks and enabling buyers to independently research brands, but Revenue Brew’s Allie Kelly notes high-stakes strategic deals still require human intervention. While automated bots effectively manage transactional retail purchases and intent signal tracking, SalesFuel CEO C. Lee Smith emphasized that complex B2B negotiations demand critical thinking and risk assessment skills that language models cannot replicate. Recent data from Gartner supports this divide, showing that 69% of B2B buyers still prefer to validate AI-generated insights directly with sales representatives. As the technology commoditizes basic market research and email generation, Richardson Sales Performance CMO Andrea Grodnitzky notes:
“Customers are not maintaining relationships anymore because their salesperson is responsive or familiar, or they get along with them and they’re easy to work with. That stuff is expected today. What customers are looking for in valuable relationships is commercial expertise and somebody who has the ability to consistently help them improve their business.”

Ikea's four-person team posts for 30+ markets
Ikea Global Social Media Specialist Elissa Wardrop chats with Marketing Brew's Katie Hicks about the inner workings of the brand’s Responsive Project Team, a four-person unit that launched in 2024 to capitalize on internet culture and generates rapid-response content for over 30 global markets without a traditional production budget. Key notes…
➤ On deciding which online trends warrant brand engagement: "Just because something is trending doesn’t mean Ikea needs to be part of it. ... One of our principles is 'innovate, don’t imitate.' We want to add something original to the conversation, not just re-create what every other brand is doing. Ideally, the idea should be so distinctly Ikea that you couldn’t simply swap our logo for another brand’s."
➤ Relying on simple concepts over expensive production requirements to maximize social reach: "One of the biggest learnings has been that content doesn’t need a huge production budget or look like a polished advertisement to be successful. Some of our best-performing posts have been incredibly simple, created in a matter of hours with little to no production cost. It’s reinforced the importance of thinking social-first, even when we’re planning content months in advance."
➤ Maintaining a cultural calendar to anticipate viral opportunities rather than purely reacting: "I’d also recommend keeping a cultural calendar of upcoming game, movie, and TV show releases, album drops, award ceremonies, sporting events, and key dates, from Valentine’s Day to World Cat Day. It’s a simple way to keep track of what’s coming up and spot potential opportunities in advance, rather than always reacting once something is already trending."
Wendy's builds a 10-hour, 8-bit video game
Wendy's partnered with independent development studio 81monkeys and creative agency VML to launch a standalone 8-bit role-playing game designed to capture consumer engagement in an increasingly saturated digital advertising market. The free title, "WendyQuest: Legend of the Four Corner Stones," offers up to 10 hours of gameplay and directs players to defeat bosses spoofing rival McDonald's before entering inventory promo codes into the Wendy's app to redeem food prizes. With the Entertainment Software Association noting that two-thirds of Americans game at least one hour per week, Marketing Dive's Jessica Hammers explains: "The standalone experience could help Wendy’s capture stronger engagement as the in-game advertising landscape grows saturated: Spending on in-game ads is expected to top $131B in 2026 and grow to over $217B by 2031."
