Would you pay $904 to spend eternity at the stadium?
That's just one grave question in today's CRO.ticker. Three more worth weighing:
ONE BIG IDEA
Price is a strategy, not just a number. The Lions sold $60 seats to keep them in fans' hands, while Barcelona used dynamic pricing to set a ticket record at an average of €984.
ONE NUMBER
$725M
for Generali's 20-year naming rights to Milan's new stadium, the largest such deal in the world.
ONE QUOTE
“Longer-form is much more valuable for lower-funnel preference and ongoing affinity. It’s much harder to fake as well.”
— Eugene Healey, Brand Strategist

THE ART OF THE OFFER
The Lions sell $60 seats brokers can't easily flip
The Detroit Lions implemented an in-person, game-day ticket program to combat rising secondary market prices, offering roughly 200 seats for $60 ahead of matchups against the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings. The franchise restricted the non-transferable digital tickets to four per transaction and made them available exclusively at Ford Field three hours before kickoff, significantly undercutting secondary market standing-room passes currently listed at $121. SBJ’s Ben Fischer notes the Lions also partnered with AI provider Lava to launch the One Pride Worldwide digital fan platform, generating between 35K and 40K members—25% of whom are international—ahead of the team's Nov. 15 game in Munich against the Patriots. President and CEO Rich Haddad on attempting to outmaneuver brokers while prioritizing affordable fan access:
“Could somebody go get creative and sell it on the streets of three people who he then walks in with and either sits with, or walks back out after he walks them in? Sure. It’s not bulletproof. It’s never going to be bulletproof. We took measures that we could to try to mitigate the risk that these tickets end up on the secondary market.
— Rich Haddad, President and CEO, Detroit Lions
Barcelona sets a ticket record in a loss
FC Barcelona generated a record €19.1M in ticket revenue during last week’s El Clasico, which the club lost to 15x European champions Real Madrid at Spotify Camp Nou, surpassing the previous mark of €16.4M. The club achieved the financial milestone despite drawing a smaller crowd (60,055 compared to 62,213 in May) by using dynamic pricing to push the average ticket cost to €984. Football Ground Guide’s Lewis Blain notes the stadium's expanded premium seating across the second tier fueled a 350% increase in hospitality revenue, with VIP seats averaging €2,727. Merchandising also surged, as the stadium store eclipsed €800K in sales on two separate days and a collaboration with rapper Tyler the Creator set a new high for the club's Spotify artist partnerships. The current figures foreshadow the venue's future earning power once renovations expand capacity to 104,600, including 9,500 VIP seats.
NHL's Hometown Remix orders quadruple Reverse Retro
The NHL and Fanatics are launching the Hometown Remix alternate uniform collection across all 32 clubs and have generated initial orders four times larger than the league's previous Reverse Retro 2.0 release with Adidas, SBJ's Alex Silverman reports. The uniforms will be worn across 261 games during the 2026-27 season, including 19 matchups featuring both teams in the new designs. The 18-month design process overseen by Fanatics VP/Creative Design Dom Fillion produced intricate jersey elements that prompted the league to centralize lettering and numbering production rather than relying on local club sourcing. Authentic Pro versions will retail for $425, while Premium replicas will cost $180. NHL Senior EVP Brian Jennings indicated the success of the wider retail approach could influence how long future alternate collections remain in use: "So much effort goes into this. Maybe, in the future, is this elongated? Can you wear this for a longer period of time than just the eight to 12 times that you’re going to be wearing this jersey now? That’s a discussion that we’re having."
D1.EXTRA · SPECIAL FEATURE
Moneyball's Second Act: What baseball's small-market winners can teach college athletics
In the wake of the Milwaukee Brewers winning the World Series, College.town has published a special report on how college athletic departments might replicate the success of low-payroll MLB franchises like the Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays by investing in in-house analytics. At a high level…
➤ While a 40-person MLB data department costs roughly $5M annually, universities can build a tailored collegiate front office featuring four full-time analysts and proprietary software for roughly $490K. The report points to a 2025 MIT study on the NBA, which found that adding 0.8 of a data analyst yielded one extra win, the equivalent of $9.6M in player salary.
➤ The report also explores how athletic directors can apply professional evaluation models to navigate the financial constraints of the House settlement: "A collegiate athletics department now makes the same calls a baseball front office does: who to pay and how much, whom to develop rather than replace, and whom to let walk away. ... A program that cannot match its conference's biggest spenders on roster pay may still be able to out-build them on the operation that decides how that money gets spent."
THE NEXT GENERATION OF SPACE
Milan's €2.3B San Siro replacement gets a name
AC Milan and Inter Milan unveiled plans to build a 71,500-seat replacement for San Siro Stadium at an estimated cost of €2.3B, according to Bloomberg's Selena Fasson, who reports the new venue will be named Generali Stadium following a naming-rights agreement with the Italian insurer. Ownership groups RedBird Capital Partners and Oaktree Capital Management expect construction to begin in 2028 with a targeted opening for the 2031-32 season. The financial estimate covers the arena and the redevelopment of 280K square meters of surrounding commercial space, which the clubs acquired from the city last year for €197M. Architecture firms Foster + Partners and Manica Architecture designed the facility to include two steep stands behind the goals angled at 37 degrees to hold 11,700 supporters each. Architects David Manica and Norman Foster noted the blueprint aims to preserve the venue's historic identity while modernizing the space: “It’s more than a building, it’s a feeling. ... It’s doing all the things that San Siro did but trying to go one step further.”
Generali's naming deal sets a world record
Sportico’s Scott Soshnick and Kurt Badenhausen note naming rights agreement with Generali Group is for a record 20 years and $725M, surpassing the 20-year, $625M pact for SoFi's NFL stadium and the $700M agreement for the Crypto.com arena in Los Angeles for the largest such agreement in the world.
Scotiabank Arena's $350M makeover is complete
MLSE has completed a four-phase, $350M renovation of Scotiabank Arena, home to the Toronto Raptors and Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Toronto Star's Gilbert Ngabo notes the three-year project heavily targeted the galleria outside Gate 1, which processes roughly 60% of entering fans and connects to Union Station. Upgrades feature 14 LED displays totaling 4,500 square feet, preserved architectural elements from the historic Toronto Postal Delivery Building, and the first comprehensive overhaul of the venue's 600-level suites since opening in 1999. The concourses also added self-serve concession technology and new menus developed by in-house chefs rather than outside vendors. MLSE COO Nick Eaves:
“This was all about creating a first impression, a real sense of anticipation for our fans. ... This is, as you would imagine, not the easiest place to work and to construct and renovate. Even though we call summer the off-season because there’s no Raptors or Leafs events, of course it’s not off-season because we’ll have anywhere between 50 to 70 concerts in this building while renovation is happening.
— Nick Eaves, COO, MLSE

THE BUSINESS OF ATTACHMENT
The Mets rent a wall in a teenager's bedroom
The creator economy is turning physical personal spaces into novel out-of-home advertising inventory, Marketing Brew's Jennimai Nguyen observes, noting brands ranging from the New York Mets and Lyft to small businesses like Big Wool Balls are purchasing low-cost ad placements on everything from laptop stickers and pet dogs to bedroom walls. High school senior Shayla Wolfe recently capitalized on the trend by sectioning off her walls for monthly brand rentals ranging from $25 to $2K, generating enough viral demand to expand the marketplace across five rooms in her family's home. The unconventional placements offer companies high visibility with minimal financial exposure, as Big Wool Balls reported a fivefold increase in organic sales from a wall ad compared to a standard threefold bump from traditional media. Mets VP of Marketing Trisha Donlin explained why the baseball franchise secured a $500 space in Wolfe's bedroom:
“The stunt speaks to the bigger philosophy of the organization, which is always taking calculated risks and challenging the traditional model of sports marketing. I can count on [more than] two hands the number of calculated risks I’ve taken that have paid off, and I think this is a low-risk, high-reward type of thing.
— Trisha Donlin, VP of Marketing, New York Mets
Eternal Fan sells the afterlife as a sponsorship category
Eternal Fan Founder Matt Linn is building an "afterlife experience" sponsorship category by erecting physical memorials at sports venues where fans can purchase long-term storage space for personal items, including crematory ashes. The business model relies on partnering with sports properties to build on-site shrines, highlighted by a recent agreement with the Jacksonville Jaguars through which the team-licensed 904ever Club offers container spaces ranging from $904 to $5,904. Linn tells SBJ’s Terry Lefton he believes university athletic departments will be highly receptive as they seek new revenue streams to fund NIL obligations, noting that an agreement with a Power Four school is currently near completion. "We can certainly provide a revenue opportunity for schools, but we don’t focus on that. We focus on a fan experience, and that’s entirely emotionally driven."
The Sixers become the NBA's first Kalshi partner
The Philadelphia 76ers are the first NBA franchise to sign a partnership with Kalshi, striking a deal just days after the league granted the platform rights to utilize NBA logos, data, and broadcast advertising, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer's Gabriella Carroll. Addressing concerns over the ethics of partnering with prediction markets—especially following the lifetime ban of Jontay Porter and the NFL's decision to force Eagles RB Saquon Barkley to divest his stake in rival market Polymarket—Sixers CRO Owen Morin pointed to the league's oversight protocols: "It really stressed, I think, all of our collective goals, not only the Sixers, the NBA, Kalshi’s, and others, of really protecting the integrity of the game. The NBA has made that obviously a key priority. That’s obviously a focus of ours as well."
Long-form audiences beat "rented attention"
Vogue Business’ Amy Francombe authored a guest essay for the Link in Bio newsletter exploring the digital marketing shift from short-form reach to long-form audience depth, and brand strategist Eugene Healey, who manages a platform of 600K followers, noted that short-form metrics often reflect rented attention rather than loyalty. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ Dazed senior strategist Nicole Brixi echoed Healey’s position, observing that creators with 7K to 8K followers can yield a 15% engagement rate compared to just 0.3% for accounts with 1M followers.
➤ Measurement standards are also changing, as YouTube recently began registering views in the first video frame—a tweak creator marketing platform Agentio projects will increase public view counts by more than 40%.
➤ Brands are already adapting to the trend, with Coach CMO Joon Silverstein utilizing long-form YouTube storytelling to drive 15M organic engagements, a 60% increase in global top-of-mind awareness among Gen Z, and a sixfold increase in consumer consideration.
➤ Healey argued that the extended video format inherently filters out inauthentic creators to build stronger affinity: "Longer-form is much more valuable for lower-funnel preference and ongoing affinity. It’s much harder to fake as well. Anyone can make a two-minute script or copy somebody else’s video word for word, or do the same visual hook if you’re a fashion creator or a food creator. But the act of creating long-form, is in itself, a very difficult and onerous task that not many people can do, and very few can do well."
