Is AI training more valuable than an MBA?

That’s just one of the ideas to ponder in the newest CRO.ticker. Here are three more key topics to consider while reading today’s edition.

Monetizing the WNBA’s Growth Surge: Surging demand and soaring player salaries are driving steep ticket price increases across the WNBA. As teams scale arena-wide pricing to match their growing popularity, executives must balance aggressive revenue capture with delicate fan messaging around rising operating costs.

The Scaling Collectibles Market: Massive turnout, tripling authentication volumes, and record auction growth signal that sports cards have fully broken out of the traditional hobby ecosystem and into the broader financial and cultural mainstream.

Trusting Marketing Expertise: Successful cultural marketing often requires executives to get out of the way. When corporate leadership trusts specialized marketing teams to execute their vision, brands can land far higher-impact, culture-defining wins.

Scroll down for the Atlanta Braves' mixed-use real estate gains, Liverpool FC’s U.S. retail expansion plan, and how Manchester United landed a record $27M training kit deal.

PRIMARY PRICES, SECONDARY CONSIDERATIONS

With unprecedented ticket demand due to the arrival of new HC Lane Kiffin and a roster that reportedly cost upwards of $40M to build, The Baton Rouge Advocate’s Scott Rabalais says fans will pay a steep price for a marquee football match-up in Tiger Stadium during the upcoming 2026 campaign. LSU reportedly sold out its complement of more than 71K season tickets, with Tigers AD Verge Ausberry adding there was also a record waiting list of 44K. Here’s more…

That left single-game tickets through school or secondary websites, with many of those commanding a higher price tag for the best games. Like the ticket resellers, LSU has had dynamic pricing for at least five years.

Premium prices for LSU’s biggest games through its athletic ticket website: Sept. 5 against Clemson [from $175-$700 based on location]; Sept. 26 against Texas A&M [from $145-$550]; Nov. 7 against Alabama [from $225-$700 with a single seat 45 rows up on the east goal line going for $650]; and Nov. 14 against Texas [from $260-$750 with the latter price purchasing a single ticket on the east 15-yard line, row 55].

StubHub seats for the Clemson match-up ran from $224-$1,300; from $152-$1,624 for Texas A&M; from $263-$1,713 for Alabama; and $250-$1,135 for Texas. (link

Front Office Sports’ Colin Salao talks to WNBA season-ticket holders and club reps about rising ticket prices. While each team in the league will play three (13.6%) more home games in 2027, floor seating renewals are seeing YoY jumps such as 48% for one fan of the Washington Mystics and 60% for another of the Phoenix Mercury. Salao writes that a Mystics pricing chart indicates the club is “increasing ticket prices per game by around 22 to 50%” throughout the arena. After a sales rep told one customer than price hikes were due to the new CBA and increased player salaries (the average salary jumped from ~$120,000 last year to ~$600,000 this season), the Mystics put out a statement emphasizing that player salaries were “well-deserved” and “not a factor” in ticket pricing: “Our pricing decisions are based on a broad range of business considerations, including the overall cost of operating our organization and our continued investment in delivering a high-quality experience for our fans.” (link)

After keeping season-ticket prices flat from 2017-2021, the San Diego Padres will raise them for a sixth straight season in 2027. The weighted average increase of 3% is the lowest during a time period that saw that number peak at 20% in 2022. The team’s payroll currently ranks ninth in MLB, as the team is set to be sold for a league-record $3.9 billion later this month. (link)

The Atlanta Braves held an earnings call that revealed overall revenue for the first six months of 2026 up roughly 5% YoY to $377.1M despite playing one fewer home game. Over the same time frame, the team also reported an overall $5.8M loss in adjusted OIBDA, as opposed to a $37.2M gain the year before. Underscoring the mixed-use development emphasis throughout collegiate and professional athletics, revenue from The Battery is up 26% to $54.9M via 4.7M visitors (+6.5%), while ticket sales and game-related income rose 2% to $322.2 M. A larger payroll and launch of an in-house local media operation have led to a 19% jump in baseball operating costs. More, including explanations for a drop in media-related income of 12%. (link)

MICRO STRATEGIES, MAJOR MONEY

The sports collectibles market continues to expand following record turnout at Fanatics Fest and the National Sports Collectors Convention, driven by new demographics, athlete engagement, and structural investments. Grading and authentication demand across PSA, Beckett, and SGC tripled year-over-year at the National, while PSA Vault doubled its intake, Heritage Auctions reported its highest revenue year in company history, and eBay lowered its authenticity guarantee threshold to $200. Highlights like an $11M card pulled from a $400 box illustrate the financial scale attracting institutional investors and high-net-worth collectors. Card Vault co-founder Chris Costa detailed how corporate consolidation has shifted the market into mainstream culture: "Fanatics, coming in and consolidating a good chunk of the production, has put sports cards production into a new echelon of quality, athlete engagement, celebrity engagement, marketing, promotion. That Fanatics engine and the Fanatics machine has really done a lot as far as getting sports cards into the public eye versus (just) the hobby eye. We as a hobby and as an industry for the last decade, 15, 20 years have always done a good job of promoting amongst ourselves, but I think it really took somebody like a Fanatics to be able to come in here and promote our industry to the world. Cards have truly become mainstream." Lots more. (link)

Looking to capitalize on an estimated 26M fans stateside who account for 26% of international retail sales, Liverpool FC is exploring the possibility of opening up brick-and-mortar shops in the U.S. The fifth-most valuable soccer club in the world ($5.74 billion) would like to grow its number of retail stores from 26 to 40 by 2030. COO Ben Latty: “We can’t expect our numbers to grow organically. We’ve got to work for them, and we’ve got to strategically put our investment where we think it’s going to return the highest revenue for us as a club.” (link)

Patience appears to have been a virtue for Manchester United, which inked with Betway as the club’s exclusive betting partner. The training kit sponsorship deal is believed to be worth in excess of $27M per year as the highest-value standalone training kit or sleeve partnership in soccer. The club waited to find a partner until it clinched its return to the UEFA Champions League, in order to be able to sell additional exposure. (link)

Per Front Office Sports: “A Peruvian soccer club put 1,000 sponsors on one jersey. Deportivo Municipal sold local sponsorships for roughly $60 each after relegation, generating enough revenue to help overcome its financial crisis.” Pics included. (link)

The New York Yankees announced Polymarket as the team's official prediction market partner for the remainder of the 2026 season. Polymarket, which purchased tickets to premium hospitality areas and suites, will have a presence at Yankee Stadium, as well as on YES Network and Amazon Prime Video broadcasts. (link)

Athletic departments must adopt formal inventory auditing strategies to responsibly monetize decades of uncatalogued physical history, according to a new blueprint penned by former Marquette administrator Mike Wittliff. Noting that Fortune 500 corporate brands rely on dedicated archivists to manage their cultural heritage, Wittliff urges college programs to stop viewing old boxes of media guides, press credentials, and unused ticket stock as mere clutter.

Instead, he proposes a comprehensive inventory process mirroring museum curation, designed to explicitly separate irreplaceable, permanent display artifacts from redundant or non-essential duplicate materials. Once authenticated and cataloged, this finite supply of physical memorabilia can be safely leveraged into a steady stream of incremental revenue and deepened alumni engagement.

By taking proactive inventory today, athletic departments can protect their core legacies while systematically capitalizing on an exploding global collectibles market that craves the authentic sports history programs have already preserved

CHANGE & IMPACT

Another industry preparing to undergo significant change due to private equity are large law firms. PE firms are pitching a Management Services Organization (MSO) structure to many firms as a way to skirt rules that prevent law firms from being owned by non-lawyers. Per the Financial Times: “The model in effect splits a law firm into two: a lawyer-owned entity that provides legal advice, and a separate MSO entity that provides services such as back-office functions, intellectual property and technology, and which outsiders can invest in. The lawyer-owned entity pays a fee to the MSO.” The model has been used to circumvent similar rules in medicine and accountancy, but one advisor notes that “everyone is interested, but everyone wants to go second.” (link)

Dine Brands CEO John Peyton reflects to Marketing Brew’s Jamila Huxtable on his gut reaction that an Applebee’s tie-in on the show Survivor was “the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard,” as this year’s campaign has reaped 6 M+ paid media impressions and 2.1 M video views. Peyton: “What I had to learn was that it wasn’t my decision to undo. That was the marketing team’s decision—and not one I would’ve made. I couldn’t have been more wrong. It exploded. [...] It was a good example of learning that my job was not to question what the marketing team was doing. They got it right, and I would’ve gotten it wrong.” (link)

CFO Brew’s Courtney Vien unpacks a recent US AI Pulse Survey by EY of 534 leaders at the level of SVP or higher, highlighting vibe-coding as being on the upswing: “More than three-quarters (76%) of senior executives whose companies are investing in AI said that ‘off-the-shelf’ software was insufficient for their needs. What’s more, 91% said that it’s ‘critical’ for organizations to use AI to develop their own software.” That being said: “Nearly three-quarters (72%) of senior leaders said their organizations are ‘facing challenges’ with AI-built tech. They cited a long list of potential problems associated with building software in-house, including the rise of shadow IT (34% said this was a barrier); concerns about regulation (33%) and cybersecurity (32%); and at 31% each, the higher initial cost involved, the lack of in-house talent, and the reliability and accuracy of AI.” More, including C-suiters allocating less of their budget to AI than they expected. (link)

Vien also reports on PwC’s 2026 Financial Services Workforce AI Survey, including that “around eight in 10 respondents predicted their organizations’ headcount would get at least 20% smaller in the next five years due to AI. At the same time, they placed a high value on AI acumen: 86% said that for many new hires, AI training is ‘more valuable than an MBA.’” In fact, “around six in 10 (58%) said they’d ‘pay a premium for AI fluency’ within the next year, while the same percentage said they’d link compensation ‘directly to AI-enabled productivity.’” More, including how “the press for rapid adoption of AI, though, may be causing more strain on staff.
