#4: Arizona Western AD Jerry Smith sat down with College.town’s Kristen Eargle to dive into facilities, finances and more. Here are some of his most notable comments…
➤ Facility priorities for the Matadors: “We're in a facility that was constructed in 1963 for our indoor sports. Our outdoor sports we've done quite a bit of work on in the last 10 years, but we need a new indoor facility. And a lot of my conversation with [President Reetika Dhawan] has been about that. … The championship structure's changing with the NJCAA and we're trying to put ourselves in a position where we can host some post-season events on our campus. So we're drawing down that line as quickly as we can and we still need to make some improvements in order to do that.”
➤ Growth for the department: “We've not added any sports here actually since I've been here. We're trying to bolster. When I came, we were about 40% funded at this institution, and now we're 100% funded in terms of scholarships. So it's been big steps and a lot of resources and a lot of support from the administration.”
➤ On external financial pressures: “Obviously one of our biggest threats is cost because transportation more than anything else, our location is in a unique place. We're right in the southwest corner of Arizona, so we're not strategically located to a lot of the other NJCAA schools as California is not a member of the NJCAA. So our nearest competition outside of our conference is about 10 hours. So obviously transportation's been a big discussion on our campus really for the last five years.” (link)
#3: Kaskaskia announces a $1M, 15-year partnership with Bradford National Bank, which includes naming rights to KC’s new gymnasium and connected wellness facilities, annual support for the KC Now Scholarship Program and a long-term student endowment. President George Evans: “A million-dollar commitment is remarkable, but the true measure of this partnership will be the opportunities it creates. … Their investment will help make higher education more accessible, strengthen our local workforce, establish a lasting legacy for future generations.” (link)
