#5: Decatur, Alabama is advancing development on two new campus facilities for Calhoun, including a new baseball field and 200-bed dormitory. The city has committed up to $3M for the athletic fields project, which will eventually connect to the residence hall site as part of a broader corridor revitalization initiative. Calhoun President Jimmy Hodges is hopeful the baseball venue will be ready for the 2028 season, adding: “Our current fields are on the east side of Pryor Field. There's no signage to tell you where to go. This will present college athletics in downtown Decatur. We hope that it will increase our fan base and give people an opportunity to see a community college athletic sporting event.” (link)
#4: Garrett’s Athletic Capital Campaign raised over $900K, surpassing its $500K goal, to support the renovation of the 700 Building. From the Cumberland Times-News: “Garrett County Government provided $3.5 million, the Garrett College Board of Trustees authorized $2.8 million from the college’s reserves, and the Governor’s Miscellaneous Capital Fund allocated the remaining $307,000. The Athletics Capital Campaign funding is helping to offset some of the college reserve funds used in the project.” Board of Trustees Chair Jason Rush: “The Board of Trustees enthusiastically endorsed the 700 Renovation because we shared the College administration’s strategic vision. We believe this project is an investment in Garrett College’s future that will help the College continue to grow enrollment and ensure its fiscal sustainability.” (link)

A national search is underway for a Men’s and Women’s Soccer HC to lead both programs, and the school will start renovating the existing grass field located on the Dowagiac Campus. Board Chair Tom Jerdon: “SMC Athletics has been so well-received by the community over the last five years. This field renovation, along with the 1st Source Bank Fieldhouse, Zollar Wrestling Room, Choir Room and Band Room projects, is another example of our responsible upgrades to existing facilities to provide more ways for students to thrive right here in Southwest Michigan.” (link)
#1: Genesee AD/Asst. VP of Student Engagement and Inclusion Kristen Schuth sat down with College.town’s Kristen Eargle to dive into the department’s structure, sport sponsorship and more. Here are some of her most notable comments…
➤ What changes have the Cougars implemented to have more consistent success, as they finished last year in the top 10 of the Ron Case Cup? “It’s a holistic thing. You need to have them (coaches) here, you need to have the student experience, you need to have the academic support. … So we reorganized to better support our students overall, which ultimately, my big thing is I've never been the win at all cost athletic director. If you ask anyone, do I love winning? Absolutely. I was a two-sport athlete in college. I don't want to lose. But at the same time, I'm a firm believer that if you do all the other pieces of the puzzle, winning will come with that."
➤ On creating dual-roles to offer full-time positions to coaches: "A lot of junior colleges that are at the Division III level, like we are, don't have full-time coaches, and right now there are only two coaches in my department that are not at that level. When I first started back in 2013, there were two full-time coaches. We've been able to create five full-time positions on campus. … It's a positive thing for the students to have their coaches here and it has increased our retention of our students as well as the ability to just recruit.”
➤ Institutional enrollment is up 4% year-over-year even as the department dropped men’s lacrosse. Schuth: “We are about 175 athletes. We still are at that level even without our lacrosse program. And for me, I see it as an opportunity. … We're in a place where it's really, really good in the athletic department and we are also evaluating to add maybe two more sports upcoming for next year as well. So that number hopefully will increase as we move forward.” (link)
