NJCAA President/CEO Christopher Parker spoke with Queen City News’ Shaquira Speaks about the Protect College Sports Act. Parker: “When we look at this in totality, it's a big win overall. … The good part is this new bill will put student-athletes at the forefront of our board so they will have a say, and that'll be a first for the NJCAA. That's never happened on the NJCAA as far as having student-athletes on the board. So hearing those voices, understanding in the weeds - some of their concerns is going to be a huge win for the association as well as the student-athletes who are participating.” (link)

House members are preparing to make what could be significant revisions to the Senate-passed Protect College Sports Act, per Ross Dellenger, who writing for On3, notes such changes threaten to ignite a major procedural battle between the two legislative chambers ahead of Congress’ final day on December 18. There are plenty of “pain points” for House lawmakers, such as the absence of a prohibition against student-athletes being classified as employees, the inclusion of a private-right-of-action concept allowing players to sue institutions and federal oversight caps on conference expansion. Senate leadership insists the current draft is a non-starter for major House amendments, with one “leading voice” in the Senate saying that wholesale House alterations stand to torpedo the bill entirely or trigger retaliatory Senate additions, including salary caps for HCs, ADs and university presidents; mandatory one-year non-compete periods for changing jobs; and potential threats to universities' tax-exempt status. “We are sending it over for adoption as is. It is a final product.” (link)

The Washington Sun’s Reese Gorman and Jesse Dougherty report the major sticking point House Republicans have with the legislation is its failure to prevent student-athletes from gaining employee status. The House-backed SCORE Act, which stalled out and ultimately died in the legislative body earlier this year, barred college athletes from becoming employees. The PCSA, however, is neutral on employment, even if labor advocates believe its antitrust protections for the NCAA and conferences would stunt future organizing efforts. “If House Republicans insist on adding an employment ban to this bill, that could affect support among Democrats in the Senate. [Sen. Maria Cantwell] fought hard for the PCSA to avoid the employment question. … To support the bill, those Democrats all broke with the AFL-CIO, which vehemently opposes the legislation. A full-on employment restriction, though, would conceivably be a no-go for many Democratic backers.” In addition, the bill’s failure to impose limits on athletic scholarships for international student-athletes and provisions on conference expansion and realignment have raised concern. Genesee AD/Asst. VP of Student Engagement and Inclusion Kristin Schuth sat down with College.town’s Kristen Eargle to dive into the department’s structure, sport sponsorship and more. Here are some of her most notable comments…

➤ What changes have the Cougars implemented to have more consistent success, as they finished last year in the top 10 of the Ron Case Cup? “It’s a holistic thing. You need to have them (coaches) here, you need to have the student experience, you need to have the academic support. … So we reorganized to better support our students overall, which ultimately, my big thing is I've never been the win at all cost athletic director. If you ask anyone, do I love winning? Absolutely. I was a two-sport athlete in college. I don't want to lose. But at the same time, I'm a firm believer that if you do all the other pieces of the puzzle, winning will come with that."

➤ On creating dual-roles to offer full-time positions to coaches: "A lot of junior colleges that are at the Division III level, like we are, don't have full-time coaches, and right now there are only two coaches in my department that are not at that level. When I first started back in 2013, there were two full-time coaches. We've been able to create five full-time positions on campus. … It's a positive thing for the students to have their coaches here and it has increased our retention of our students as well as the ability to just recruit.”

➤ Institutional enrollment is up 4% year-over-year even as the department dropped men’s lacrosse. Schuth: “We are about 175 athletes. We still are at that level even without our lacrosse program. And for me, I see it as an opportunity. … We're in a place where it's really, really good in the athletic department and we are also evaluating to add maybe two more sports upcoming for next year as well. So that number hopefully will increase as we move forward.” (link)

The NJCAA names U.S. Council for Athletes’ Health President and CEO Dr. James Borchers as its Chief Medical Advisor. In his new role, Borchers will provide medical expertise and strategic guidance to the NJCAA as it continues to evaluate and advance health and safety initiatives, resources and best practices for its member colleges and student-athletes. Borchers also serves as Chief Medical Officer for the Big Ten Conference (NCAA DI). (link)

Decatur, Alabama is advancing development on two new campus facilities for Calhoun, including a new baseball field and 200-bed dormitory. The city has committed up to $3M for the athletic fields project, which will eventually connect to the residence hall site as part of a broader corridor revitalization initiative. Calhoun President Jimmy Hodges is hopeful the baseball venue will be ready for the 2028 season, adding: “Our current fields are on the east side of Pryor Field. There's no signage to tell you where to go. This will present college athletics in downtown Decatur. We hope that it will increase our fan base and give people an opportunity to see a community college athletic sporting event.” (link)

Colleges and universities remain deeply divided over the deployment of AI-detection software to combat automated academic dishonesty four years after the launch of ChatGPT, according to The Atlantic's Will Oremus, who notes Turnitin has sold its AI detection add-on to roughly 1,400 North American institutions—flagging AI writing in nearly half of all U.S. university submissions last academic year—while maintaining a claimed false-positive rate under 1% and a false-negative rate around 15%. Competitor Pangram reports an internal false-positive rate of 1 in 25,000, yet major institutions like Vanderbilt, Indiana and Harvard have discouraged or banned automated detection due to concerns over false accusations, bias, and evasion tactics like "humanizer" tools. MIT teacher-education program director Eric Klopfer offers his solution: "We’re trying to think about how we approach the design of our education system in a way that should hopefully mitigate even the need for AI detectors. If it feels like what I’m doing is checking a box that says I’m going to get credit, then it’s understandable why students would want to take a shortcut." (link)
