Jones AD Chris Robinson joined The Sports Page with Mitchell Williams to discuss community engagement, hiring decisions and more. Here are some of his most notable comments…

➤ What does he look for in potential coaching hires? “One, you hit the nail on the head: the culture, what kind of person they are, what kind of person they could bring to our kind of character, and the culture they could bring to our campus to help not only build on it, but also help recruit kids. And so I've always said, I've been a big believer that 85% of a college coach's job is recruiting because if you don't have the best players, then odds are you may be the best coach, but you're not going to win as many games as you need to. And so being able to relate with kids and also relate with parents. I mean, parents have to trust that you're going to take care of their child whenever they decide to say, ‘Hey, yeah, I'm okay if you decide to go there.’”

➤ For the second straight year, Jones has hosted all four local high school football teams’ opening games at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field for the JC Jamboree. Robinson: “We've done it for the last two years and we've averaged anywhere from 7,000 to 9,000 people come through the gate over the course of the day with food truck vendors and a lot of great things. We also let any high school kids age free into not only that event, but any event athletically that we have on campus. So that really helps us with the student recruiting network as well. So it's just been a really, really beneficial thing for Jones College.” (link)

Construction is officially underway on a $6.7M outdoor athletic complex at Northern Essex which will feature a turf baseball field, turf soccer/multi-purpose field, and a new eight-lane track. AD Dan Blair: “It’s great to see this project coming to fruition. This will likely be the finest on-campus facility at the two-year college level in the Northeast, which will elevate the overall student-athlete experience at the college.” The project is expected to be completed in early 2027. The ICCAC has signed a three-year agreement with Dyersville Events to host the Region 11 DII Baseball Tournament at Iowa’s iconic Field of Dreams Ballpark. Commissioner Thom McDonald: “What an unbelievable opportunity for our student-athletes and coaches to compete for a conference championship at a world-class, ready-made for Major League Baseball complex. The Field of Dreams is as iconic a place as there is in baseball. … We hope it can be there forever.” On the future ICCAC tournament format: “Beginning in 2028, the ICCAC will adopt a postseason format in which the top eight teams compete in best-of-three first-round series. The four series winners will advance to the four-team, double-elimination Region 11 tournament at the Field of Dreams Ballpark. … The change coincides with the NJCAA's introduction of a new Super Regional postseason structure in 2028. Under that structure, regions will determine their champions before eight, four-team Super Regionals are held, with each Super Regional winner advancing to the NJCAA Division II Baseball World Series.” (link)

The two-year-old Missouri State-West Plains baseball program will play its first home game in program history on October 17 against the North Arkansas College Pioneers. The Grizzly Ballpark field, dugouts and field house are ready with the press box, lighting, concessions and parking scheduled for completion in February 2027. Long-term plans include a softball field, basketball courts, and a multi-sport community hub. (link)

NJCAA enters a multi-year partnership with REP Fitness as the NJCAA’s Official Fitness and Strength Equipment Partner. Rep Fitness will provide NJCAA member institutions access to strength training equipment, facility expertise and athletic performance solutions. (link)

Southeast Arkansas has canceled its 2026-27 women’s basketball season, according to Pine Bluff Commercial’s Tanner Spearman, citing a summer coaching change which delayed recruiting and left the program without any returning players, resulting in a reduced roster. New HC Chad Killinger, who was hired in June, will focus on rebuilding the team for a planned competitive return next fall. (link)

Spoon River has cancelled the remainder of the women’s volleyball fall season. SRC spokeswoman Vickie Parry cited a small roster size as one of the primary reasons, according to WMBD’s Josh Seabaugh. AD John Bassett: “We recognize the disappointment this decision may bring, particularly for our student-athletes who have invested significant time, effort and commitment into the season. Our priority right now is supporting our students and ensuring they have the resources and assistance they need as we move forward.” (link, link)

Wabash Valley has canceled the remainder of its 2026 women’s soccer season, forfeiting its final six matches. (link)

Northeast Women’s Volleyball HC Amanda Schultze will step down at the conclusion of the 2026 season after 14 years of leading the Hawks. (link)

From yesterday’s CFO.ticker: Small private institutions are slashing published tuition rates to boost enrollment and counteract rising skepticism over higher education costs, Bloomberg's Amanda Albright observes. Emory & Henry reduced tuition from near $40K to $19,990, while Concordia-St. Paul, which saw undergraduate enrollment climb over 70% after a 33% cut in 2013 and announced a further $5,500 reduction. Albright notes a NACUBO survey of over 250 private colleges revealed an average tuition discount rate of 57% for first-time students, and E&H President Lou Fincher says: “We just knew that we couldn’t be a school with a price tag of $40K and attract students, particularly those in the socioeconomic groups that are in our region. We couldn’t continue on that same path.” (link) Also of note, bond yields are pushing to historic highs, with the US 10-year Treasury hitting 5.34%, its highest mark since 2002, with Citigroup attributing the 60- to 100-basis-point surge to inflation pressures stemming from the Middle East, rising government debt that recently pushed the US national total to $40T, and corporate borrowing to fund AI investments that averaged $466B in the first half of the year.
