More from Daytona State AD/Dean of the School of Health & Wellness Alison Mohr’s Small College Conversation on alignment and the changing athletics landscape. Key takeaways…
➤ The trickle-down of NIL: “I think the biggest change, and it's finally coming down to us, is just how do we deal with the NIL piece of it? So NIL is what's out there all the time. It's trickling down into our level. And I think trying to balance that old school, it should be about the team, not individual. So now you've got students that are trying to promote themselves, which is awesome. They get an opportunity to make some money and do those things, but how do you balance that? Really, it shouldn't be about that individual, it should be about the team and that's really how you get and win championships: by having some cohesiveness and having good team chemistry and all those things. So now it's just trying to figure out how to balance that within this NIL era.”
➤ On her dual role: “That's the one piece that I had not been completely hands-on with. The athletic side, no problem. I've been involved in the conversations on the academic side of things and my boss would always talk through situations and he would share information from his role in that. So being that person now, where I'm involved in those academic meetings, which I absolutely love because you really get to see hands-on, you're in the room with the academic leadership and the chairs of all the other departments and you get to listen and hear about what's going on on that side of it. I think it just makes you overall a better leader for the program. We are considered an academic program at Daytona State, so that, I think, is very beneficial for us.” (link)
Dakota County Tech and Inver Hills (N/A) plan to officially merge as Minnesota Valley College this summer, pending final approvals from the Higher Learning Commission, the Minnesota State Board of Trustees and the U.S. Department of Education. Both the Rosemount and Inver Grove Heights campuses will stay open. Minnesota Valley College will field NJCAA DII athletic teams under new branding, adopting Riverhawks as the new team nickname and mascot, with DCTC’s Blue Knights mascot and name to be retired. Minnesota State and the trustees have initiated a search for the inaugural Minnesota Valley president. (link)
Jackson will cut the ribbon on its new Jets Soccer Complex on Monday. The facility includes the school's first artificial turf field, scoreboard, stadium lighting, press box, and upgraded bleachers. President Daniel Phelan: “This is the community's college, and investments like this are about much more than athletics. They strengthen the student experience, build essential peer relationships, help students complete their course of study, create new opportunities for our community, as well as continue building a campus where people want to learn, compete, gather and belong.” (link)
A pair of women’s flag football updates: The ACCC will transition its season to the spring starting in 2027-28, to coincide with the sport’s first season as an NJCAA championship sport. There will also be a new league starting this spring, the Pennsylvania Community College Flag Football League. (link, link)

CollegeSports.jobs outpaced the market, with listings up 23% year over year, while postings on the NCAA Market fell 3%. ➤ Roane State names Men’s Basketball AC John McAllister as its Women’s Basketball Interim HC. (link)
New survey data from Inside Higher Ed and Generation Lab found that 15% of students and 25% of male students across 310 institutions are wagering on FanDuel, Draftkings, Kalshi or Polymarket. As the proliferation of gambling spreads, 31% or male and 25% of female students know peers who have experienced financial distress or academic fallout as a result of losses from online wagering. Similarly, a separate IHE/Hanover Research Survey found that 56% of student success leaders are not tracking digital wagering on their respective campuses. NASPA VP for Research and Policy Jhenai Chandler: “Digital wagering and gambling should be part of the standard prevention conversation on campus. It also belongs in our discussions about mental health, financial aid and financial wellness, because the consequences show up in all those places.” (link)
Economic pressures like inflation and housing unaffordability are driving a rise in financial nihilism among young Americans, pushing them toward sports gambling, cryptocurrency, and prediction markets like Kalshi, according to Politico's Victoria Guida. Recent research indicates that legalized betting displaces traditional household investments, while data from Citizens Capital Markets and Advisory shows median users of sportsbooks lose money on net. This coincides with the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting a 0.7% decline in inflation-adjusted hourly wages between September 2025 and September 2026. Guida notes that federal lawmakers are now proposing guardrails, including legislation from Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Rep. Paul Tonko (D-NY) to ban live in-game betting advertisements and prohibit credit card deposits, while the American Institute for Boys and Men develops policy proposals for default deposit and time limits. American Institute for Boys and Men Gambling Policy Lead Jonathan Cohen on the economic desperation fueling the speculative behavior: “With a couple of Eagles parlays, I have a chance of making [that $10K] into $100K. Now I have a down payment.” (link)
