Arizona Western AD Jerry Smith sat down with College.town’s Kristen Eargle to dive into facilities, finances and more. Here are some of his most notable comments…

➤ Facility priorities for the Matadors: “We're in a facility that was constructed in 1963 for our indoor sports. Our outdoor sports we've done quite a bit of work on in the last 10 years, but we need a new indoor facility. And a lot of my conversation with [President Reetika Dhawan] has been about that. … The championship structure's changing with the NJCAA and we're trying to put ourselves in a position where we can host some post-season events on our campus. So we're drawing down that line as quickly as we can and we still need to make some improvements in order to do that.”

➤ Growth for the department: “We've not added any sports here actually since I've been here. We're trying to bolster. When I came, we were about 40% funded at this institution, and now we're 100% funded in terms of scholarships. So it's been big steps and a lot of resources and a lot of support from the administration.”

➤ On external financial pressures: “Obviously one of our biggest threats is cost because transportation more than anything else, our location is in a unique place. We're right in the southwest corner of Arizona, so we're not strategically located to a lot of the other NJCAA schools as California is not a member of the NJCAA. So our nearest competition outside of our conference is about 10 hours. So obviously transportation's been a big discussion on our campus really for the last five years.” (link)

Today, the Indian River Board of Trustees voted to table President Tim Moore’s recommendation to eliminate the men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs to prepare a more comprehensive report for next month’s board meeting, per WPTV’s Tyler Hatfield. The board also requested the report include community input, as a petition to save the programs has received over 12K signatures. (link)

Kaskaskia announces a $1M, 15-year partnership with Bradford National Bank, which includes naming rights to KC’s new gymnasium and connected wellness facilities, annual support for the KC Now Scholarship Program and a long-term student endowment. President George Evans: “A million-dollar commitment is remarkable, but the true measure of this partnership will be the opportunities it creates. … Their investment will help make higher education more accessible, strengthen our local workforce, establish a lasting legacy for future generations.” (link)

Front Office Sports and Teamworks released the Teamworks State of AI in Sports 2026 report, revealing a stark disconnect between artificial intelligence adoption and measurable financial returns across the sports ecosystem. While 90% of sports organizations expect their AI usage to increase over the next two to three years and 79% expanded their investments over the past 12 months, only 15% can currently demonstrate clear ROI. The research, which surveyed 164 collegiate and professional organizations, indicates that fragmented, department-level purchasing serves as the primary operational bottleneck. Key findings…

➤ Organizations deploying AI against an organization-wide strategy report clear ROI at a 37% rate, compared to just 2% for those adopting tools one department at a time.

➤ Respondents cited integrating existing systems as their top planned investment (58%), while only 12% plan to replace a core system. Buyers prioritize accuracy (77%) and data security (65%) far above the sophistication of the underlying model (9%) when evaluating new products.

➤ Athletic departments historically purchased separate software platforms for different internal functions, leaving medical data in one system, scouting data in another, and performance metrics in a third. Because AI requires unified data to function effectively, this fragmentation severely limits its ability to generate actionable insights. When an organization consolidates its data into a connected record (one to three systems), AI tools can analyze the complete athlete profile to produce a clear return on investment—defined by the report as measurable financial gains or definitively improved operational decisions—67% of the time. When that data remains scattered across a fragmented record (four or more systems), AI tools fail to connect the dots, causing the ROI success rate to plummet to just one in eight. (link)

Coaches Corner…
➤ Delaware Tech elevates Women’s Basketball AC Kevin Smith to HC. (link)
➤ Glen Oaks names Championship Sports Consulting founder and former collegiate coach Terry Smith as its Men’s Basketball Interim HC. (link)
➤ Massasoit selects UMass Dartmouth (NCAA DIII) Women’s Soccer AC Beca DoCarmo as its new HC. (link)
➤ Arkansas Rich Mountain hires Flagler Schools Administrator and Wrestling HC David Bossard as its inaugural Men’s and Women’s Wrestling HC. (link)

From across the college athletics universe: Pacific Lutheran (NCAA DIII) football student-athlete Jackson Hale, former Claremont McKenna (NCAA DIII) men’s basketball student-athlete Connor Printz and former Lynchburg (NCAA DIII) dual-sport athlete Chris Jennings have filed a class action lawsuit against the NCAA over the prohibition of athletic scholarships in DIII. From the suit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California: “The NCAA has engaged in an ongoing conspiracy to fix the price of Division III athletic labor at zero by prohibiting every member of Division III, the NCAA’s largest division at more than 400 schools, from offering a single penny of athletic scholarship. … The Division III prohibition on athletic aid is undeniably a multi-conference agreement in Alston’s own taxonomy. Division III schools remain free to differentiate themselves along every dimension that does not fix the price of the labor that sustains the marquee recruiting tools that are their athletic programs.” (link)
