Georgia Highlands AD Nicole Levering sat down with the Educational AD Podcast to discuss the future of Chargers athletics, facilities, sports sponsorship and more. Key takeaways…
➤ The department is exploring a move to the NAIA within the next two years, as the institution is growing with a number of four-year degree programs and a shrinking number of in-state peers. “Not many people know this, but the junior colleges are kind of diminishing in Georgia. There's only three state junior colleges left in Georgia: Georgia Highlands, South Georgia State College and Gordon State College. That's it. There are some technical colleges left that do play in our conference, but they only play the sport of basketball. So right now we're competing against two other teams for baseball and softball, and we have no other volleyball teams in our conference. So we're competing with a hodgepodge of teams from Alabama and Tennessee because we're closer to the Tennessee border. So yeah, our league is just kind of diminishing a little bit and we fit the size and the mold for the NAIA model now that our degree paths have grown and our enrollment is growing and we've been highly competitive in our level as well.”
➤ On sport sponsorship: “In my opinion, we're stabilizing. We've got our six sports because you have to have six sports for NAIA. We're just trying to build healthy checks and balances for every sport so we can still be competitive, get the recruits that we want, but also still provide a good student-athlete experience because that's very important to me as well. We want them to be able to get the food that they want, to have decent travel, not fully fundraising to function 24/7 and just be able to provide good support. So I think right now our goal is to stabilize that across those six sports. I do think if we were to add an additional sport, the next one up to bat would be men's cross country.” (link)
Iowa Central AD Guy Horn joined The Alliance Connection to discuss facilities and much more. Here are some of his most notable comments…
➤ The 24K square-foot Center for Sports Performance is under construction and will house the football program as well as athletic training and several academic programs. On moving all coaches outside of football and gym sports into the Triton Athletic Complex: “It has created an environment that screams teamwork every day. All of our assistants are in cubicle spaces, so they're talking every day, they're working together every day. So there's some really exciting things going on. And I think that's going to push us as an athletic department over the top, make us more successful.”
➤ On expanding the athletic training space from 1,200 square-feet to 3K: “For me personally, that's one of the most exciting parts. Student well-being and student experience, that's what we want Iowa Central Athletics to be about. We want them to have a good experience. We want them to be sad that we're only a two-year program. We want them to want to be there for four years. I think this is going to provide us another touchpoint where we can make that effect on our student-athletes and increase their happiness.” (link)
Eligibility Developments…
➤ The DIII Management Council is recommending the Presidents Council oppose the age-based eligibility proposal for the 2027 NCAA Convention, citing “more time is needed to observe the implications of the legislation adopted by Divisions I and II and assess the division’s current eligibility model.” (link)
➤ Yesterday, the NAIA hosted a town hall on the five seasons of competition proposal before the association. If approved, the association would move to allow five seasons of competition across 10 semesters of 15 quarters of attendance, provided student-athletes have completed 96 semester or 144 quarter credit hours, with 64 semester or 96 quarter hours in their major field of study or general education. Further, any transfer student-athletes would be evaluated on an individual basis to determine how many seasons of competition they would have remaining. Full town hall. (link)
St. Louis is in the midst of $18M in renovations at its STLCC-Meramec complex that will include new turf fields for baseball, soccer and softball, as well as updated locker rooms, scoreboards, seating, lighting and more. STLCC-Meramec President Feleccia Moore-Davis: “This project represents so much more than new athletic fields. It’s about providing STLCC-Meramec students with a complete college experience. We’re creating a true home for our student-athletes, while giving all of our students more opportunities to support their classmates, attend games and connect with one another.” Construction is expected to continue through this spring. Independence will add men's and women's cross country and track & field starting in 2027-28, bringing the Pirates to 18 total programs. (link)
Coaches Corner…
➤ Colorado Northwestern Men’s Wrestling HC Tytus Coombs has added Asst. AD to his title. (link)
➤ Ellsworth Football HC Matt White has stepped down after being placed on leave earlier in the year, per FootballScoop. (link)
A new study of 5,235 colleges by the Hildreth Institute reveals that institutions in the same geographic markets publish markedly different living-cost estimates, complicating affordability assessments for prospective students, according to Inside Higher Ed's Joshua Bay. Here’s the deal…
➤ The analysis found that approximately half of the evaluated institutions reported allowances for indirect costs were more than 20% above local benchmarks, while higher-tuition and selective colleges frequently estimated miscellaneous expenses well below average rates.
➤ The discrepancies stem from varying institutional methodologies for estimating off-campus housing, food, and transportation, which directly dictate financial aid limits.
➤ Hildreth Institute Managing Director Bahar Akman Imboden emphasized how these inconsistent financial projections directly impact university enrollment and retention: "There is a very legitimate concern there that higher-cost living allowance could make an institution appear less affordable and potentially discourage enrollment. A budget that is too modest can make a college appear more affordable … so a student may enroll, even take out a loan based on this initial picture, only to discover that their actual expenses are beyond their means. If those financial pressures prevent students from completing, then we risk the most troubling kind of outcome of higher education, which is debt without a degree." (link)
