The most daunting challenge the Protect College Sports Act faces in passing the House might be the short window left to reach a finish line, per ESPN’s Dan Murphy, who notes the legislative body is scheduled for just 20 more working days spread across five weeks between now and the end of the year. “While that could be extended if lawmakers are debating high-priority issues such as a government funding deal, it's unlikely they would add time solely for the PCSA.” If the House can’t reach a vote before the end of 2026, the process would begin anew in January, and if Republicans lose control of the House in the midterms, “the likelihood of the current bill being revived is low.” More…

➤ Portions of the bill prescribing how often schools should schedule games with their rivals, how long the season should last and other items in a "grab bag of random things" in the legislation stretch beyond the role the federal government should play in a private industry, according to a House aide. Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) recently shared a similar sentiment in a statement to the Washington Sun: “It's really important that we allow the schools to govern themselves."

➤ A spokesperson for the Congressional Black Caucus, which remains staunchly opposed to the PCSA as written, says authors haven't been willing to engage in serious conversations with members or with other groups that represent the interests of Black student-athletes while crafting the legislation. “The CBC carries more sway in the House than the Senate -- 58 of its 62 members are in the House. The group played a major role in defeating a different college sports bill called the SCORE Act in the House last year. A spokesperson for the group said the CBC would also like to see university leaders, especially from Southern states, take a stronger stance against racial gerrymandering before throwing its support behind any bill that helps the college sports industry.” (link)

More from Genesee AD/Asst. VP of Student Engagement and Inclusion Kristin Schuth’s Small College Conversation on the value of committee involvement in her career. “The biggest thing for me is the conversations with other individuals that are going through the exact same things that we are. So I mean, BOSCA, NATYCAA, they're all great organizations because it's small schools dealing with small budgets, small problems, whereas Duke and Tennessee don't have the same issues that Genesee Community College does. So it's really that opportunity to connect with other individuals that are going through the same thing and gain their feedback and their ideas. I cannot even tell you how many times I learn in the hallway rather than in a session. … Part of my professional development was getting more involved at the national level and things. One of the biggest things for me about being in all of these positions is just the ability to make change for our students.” (link)

Garrett’s Athletic Capital Campaign raised over $900K, surpassing its $500K goal, to support the renovation of the 700 Building. From the Cumberland Times-News: “Garrett County Government provided $3.5 million, the Garrett College Board of Trustees authorized $2.8 million from the college’s reserves, and the Governor’s Miscellaneous Capital Fund allocated the remaining $307,000. The Athletics Capital Campaign funding is helping to offset some of the college reserve funds used in the project.” Board of Trustees Chair Jason Rush: “The Board of Trustees enthusiastically endorsed the 700 Renovation because we shared the College administration’s strategic vision. We believe this project is an investment in Garrett College’s future that will help the College continue to grow enrollment and ensure its fiscal sustainability.” (link)

Southwestern Michigan will add men’s and women’s soccer as its newest varsity programs starting in 2027-28. A national search is underway for a Men’s and Women’s Soccer HC to lead both programs, and the school will start renovating the existing grass field located on the Dowagiac Campus. Board Chair Tom Jerdon: “SMC Athletics has been so well-received by the community over the last five years. This field renovation, along with the 1st Source Bank Fieldhouse, Zollar Wrestling Room, Choir Room and Band Room projects, is another example of our responsible upgrades to existing facilities to provide more ways for students to thrive right here in Southwest Michigan.” (link)

NorthWest Arkansas is holding its first-ever homecoming week, culminating in a pregame party and cookout before tomorrow night’s soccer matches against Northeastern A&M. Executive AD Brooke Brewer tells KUAF’s Kyle Kellams the Eagles are approaching the inaugural event with the intention of starting with a manageable event, with the goal of growth in future iterations. More from Brewer: “One of the biggest goals we have as an institution right now is really becoming that space for students to gather and having what we call a sticky campus culture. But we talk about that even broader within the community, right? And being a place that people gather and they feel welcomed. And so the biggest theme that we've continued to talk about is kind of that initiative of there's a place for everyone here. And so that means there's a place for you here as a student. That means there's a place for you here to come back and celebrate with us. That means there's a place for you at homecoming. And so when we looked at programming, we talked to faculty and staff and students, and we really just tried to come up with some ideas that we felt like everyone could be a part of.” (link)
