Next week, the Indian River District Board of Trustees will review a proposal to restructure the athletic department, which would include transitioning baseball, men’s basketball and softball to DII and eliminating men’s and women’s swimming & diving starting in 2027-28. The River would also evaluate reinstating women’s basketball in 2028-29, pending resource availability, if approved. (link)

Pearl River AD/Baseball HC Michael Avalon joined the ABCA Podcast to discuss eligibility, facilities and more. Key takeaways…

➤ On the trickle down from the NCAA’s new age-based eligibility model: “I do think with the five-for-five, you're going to start seeing better players falling down to the junior college level just because there's not enough room at the Division I level anymore. And so I think all levels of baseball will improve because of that. … There are going to be more players available, especially now with the five-for-five, in my opinion. Us, being limited in the out-of-state player in Mississippi that we're allowed, we've had to adjust our recruiting philosophy a little bit. … I think you're going to see it more on the front end on the recruiting side, those seniors coming to junior college instead of going off to the four-year level.”

➤ Adjusting to the new baseball postseason in 2028: “I think it will continue to improve our World Series. It's tough, but it'll just make it tougher, which is what it's supposed to be. I'm excited and looking forward to that new format and hopefully that will continue to push teams to play tougher schedules. … Hopefully we can figure out a way to still allow those games to happen just for us regionally. It's tough to find other opponents to play out of the state of Mississippi to have a diverse schedule and play some different teams. So that's the one thing I'm a little worried about, just making sure that we find a way to make sure that, hey, it's still a good thing for Division I’s to play Division II baseball.”

➤ Facility upgrades and game-day amenities: “We've got a new little project going on right now. We've been fortunate with new dorms right next to our baseball field and we're adding a new little feature to our field, outdoor kitchen area that our guys are going to use that's going to double as a game day deck. ... The thing I love about this place is we weren't fortunate to be given millions of dollars to build this big-time facility, but this compares with any facility in the country as far as junior college and a lot of four-year schools, in my opinion.” (link)

McLennan AD Shawn Trochim sat down with The Career Play’s Garret Sulak to dive into her career at MCC and what’s ahead for the department. Here are some of her most notable comments…

➤ With over 20 years leading the Highlanders, Trochim on stepping outside her comfort zone: “I challenged myself to get out of my comfort zone to try to go embark on a new responsibility in terms of fundraising and getting out and meeting with donors and talking to people in the community to help try to fund a project like [our baseball and softball upgrades]. I felt like I was kind of stuck, so to speak, and needed new challenges. Over the last five years, we've been able to embark on, like I mentioned, the facility upgrades, the hiring of a second athletic trainer. It's almost unheard of for a junior college to have two athletic trainers. We were able to hire a strength and conditioning coach for the athletic department, and then we started volleyball.”

➤ What’s next for MCC? “The next thing we want to look at is, are we going to be challenging ourselves to look at what on-campus housing may look like for our student body, for our athletic department? A new basketball facility is something that I feel like is on the horizon. I'm not going to promise that, but it is something that we're definitely looking at. … I certainly believe that at some point in time, in the next five years, we could very well have a new basketball facility, a facility where we play basketball, a facility where we play volleyball. I want to dream like that, and I want that to be something that's on the forefront. Just to end that, I want to be able to leave this place when I walk away from it in this position; the next person really truly understands they're set.” (link)

➤ Clinton President Brian Kelly announces his resignation and will leave his role in November 2026 after six years of leadership. (link)
➤ McCook elevates Softball Interim HC Kelsey Gillen to Softball HC/Student Success Coach. (link)
➤ Northern Essex names Babson (NCAA DIII) Baseball AC Mitchell Holmes as Baseball HC/Asst. AD. (link)

The Brookdale Board of Trustees has approved a reduction in force plan as it faces a projected $8M FY28 budget deficit, driven by $6.6M in projected health care cost increases and $1.4M more in employee wages. The plan will save $7.36M by reducing 41 positions and leaving another 20 vacant in two rounds of reductions. The institution plans to close the remaining $637K deficit through expense control measures and increases in alternative revenues. (link)

A network of Super PACs financed by DraftKings, FanDuel, Fanatics, and Bet365 has injected nearly $100M over the past year into state legislative elections to advance gambling industry interests. The sportsbook operators utilize the Win for America PAC to distribute capital to bipartisan affiliates, recently allocating $5.9M to the Republican-aligned American Conservative Fund PAC and $2.7M to the Democrat-aligned American Future PAC from a $9.65M contribution. The PAC also executed substantial investments in mailers and television through political consulting firms like Sway ($347K) and Targeted Platform Media LLC ($194K). The advertising campaigns intentionally omit any mention of sports betting, instead leveraging hot-button political issues to influence the state lawmakers responsible for regulating online casinos and establishing corporate tax rates.
