CollegeAD shares the latest on Iowa State’s AD search, reporting that in addition to retaining Parker Executive Search, “ISU also announced that a small committee, which will be headed by President David Cook, has been formed to assist with the process. Sources say that in addition to Cook, several department staffers are expected to sit on the committee, including Faculty Athletics Representative Tim Day. With materials officially due to Parker officials by September 23, it doesn't sound like lowa State will drag out the process. It's our understanding that ISU would like to have its next AD on the ground in Ames by November.” (link

The tension between LSU and the SEC extends beyond recent roster disputes to reveal a fundamental shift in the university's leadership dynamic, according to ESPN's Dan Wetzel, who posits that league administrators fear the athletic department is ideologically governed by Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry rather than President Wade Rousse or AD Verge Ausberry, thereby introducing political motives that favor public conflict over conference compromise. As LSU continually tests league boundaries under Football HC Lane Kiffin and Men's Basketball HC Will Wade, SEC leaders question whether campus administrators hold any real authority over their programs, and Wetzel writes: "The chief concern is that the collegiality and common values of veteran campus leaders are not shared by politicians who can get more benefit out of conflict than compromise. ... Whipping up outrage is a lot more effective politically than promising to work with the 'other side.' As such, it is believed the motivations of Landry and others are different from the motivations of a typical school president or AD." A league administrator puts it like this: “It's impossible to deal with LSU right now. They are unserious." (link)

The ACC will expand its enhanced replay for the 2026 football season, per ESPN’s David Hale, who explains: “In addition to expanding the number of games that will include enhanced replay, the ACC will add four new cameras in the game-day operations center to allow for more ‘over the shoulder’ visibility of what officials in the replay center are seeing.” ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips: "Innovation remains a hallmark of the ACC, including being the first conference to provide enhanced replay transparency last season. Following a successful first year, we are proud to further elevate this fan-friendly initiative by bringing it to even more games in 2026. We will continue investing in technology that strengthens competitive integrity, improves operations and enhances the student-athlete and fan experience." (link

The Big Ten is expanding its plan to allow enhanced replay review insight during football broadcasts. Originally slated only for Friday games, the league initiative will now include “all football broadcasts from Big Ten venues that include Big Ten replay and on-field officials will be able to feature live audio between the game referee and replay official during reviews, alongside video of the game footage being viewed during the process and a view inside the state-of-the-art Big Ten Replay Center. This will include all conference games during the 2026 season as well as home non-conference matchups officiated by Big Ten crews.” (link)

"Western Michigan University won that football game," WMU President Russ Kavalhuna tells CBS’ Brandon Marcello. Additional key comments…

That said, Kavalhuna still maintains it’s important for the Broncos to look ahead, not backwards: “Well, you know, I've taken some heat for this stance, but I still stand by it. Western Michigan University can't be the entity that is shaking its fist and saying we're the experts on these types of NCAA protocols. I'm saying very often to my team and to my colleagues that we reject this kind of idea that our position is that we win or somebody cheated.

Let's talk about the NCAA saying that they can't change the outcome of the game. Everything's impossible until somebody does it. So I'm glad that we're actually having this discussion because, as with any human-based system, you've got to constantly evaluate what should be improved and what should be changed. And it's always a really difficult question when you realize you're going to change some rule. Do you just do it prospectively, or do you look over your shoulder and say the person who pushed this boulder up to the top of the mountain can't be denied the benefit of pushing this boulder up to the mountain, can they? And that's a really interesting philosophical question that, frankly, I'm glad I don't have to decide." (link)

Known for his fundraising and revenue generation abilities after helping bring in $173M over the last three years at Mississippi State, Florida Atlantic AD Josh McCowan is now aiming to increase Owls’ Athletics revenue through various avenues, including events, sponsorships and ticket sales, per The Palm Beach Post’s Tom D’Angelo. McCowan: “I would say [revenue’s] more important now than ever. There's a huge emphasis right now on growing the pie, growing the pot of revenue that you can get in any bucket.” More…

While McCowan is invested in the success of FAU’s 19 programs, he understands progress isn’t possible without a healthy budget. That’s why he plans to explore utilizing Flagler Credit Union Stadium for additional money-making events. McCowan: “From when I started, it's become more of a bottom-line business. But you operate with more and more business principles certainly than you ever have before. … What is our niche here? What can we do?. That's where our group collectively has got to kind of come together and start to get creative. And obviously, we have a different market here than what Starkville, Mississippi is. So let's maximize our market and let's take a look at that."

McCowan believes FAU has untapped potential due to its location, past successes and current membership in the American, considered the top tier of the Group of Six. “I truly believe here you can still go out and sign some really good freshmen and mix it with really good transfers. If we know we're not going to keep everybody, but maybe we will keep some, then you mix that in with transfers wanting to come down here and you could be in a really good position. That's where every coach just has to be really good at understanding and knowing the changing landscape and how they can build their programs around it." (link

UC Riverside AD Greg Paules outlined his initial priorities six months into his tenure, highlighting facility upgrades, staffing milestones, and the men's soccer program's new Pac-12 affiliation. After joining the program from Cal State Fullerton, Paules finalized a 75-person department with 10 head coaches following the hire of Baseball HC Greg Wallis. The Highlanders recently installed safety netting at the softball field and a new video board inside the Student Recreation Center, while pursuing donor support for future batting cages and weight room renovations. Paules also helped establish the Crosstown Showdown rivalry series with Cal Baptist, an initiative backed by Riverside Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson. More from Paules…

"I’m just trying to dive in, learn as much as I can, see where I can help in the short term, and then set us up for long-term success."

"There’s good bones in our facilities, but we’ve just got to realize some of these opportunities and I think that will aid in our competitiveness and our fan experience."

"Our opportunity to represent not only UC Riverside but this Inland Empire community is right there for the taking. I don’t just want us to get a little bit better on the margins. I want us to try and shoot for the stars and see where we end up." (link)

Members of NC State’s 1983 national championship men’s basketball team appeared before the North Carolina Supreme Court on Tuesday, arguing former student-athletes should be compensated if their university or the NCAA utilizes their NIL, such as during March Madness. While the association contends footage of the “Cardiac Pack’s” run through the NCAA Tournament is historical replay covered by copyright protections, and that any claims are barred by a long-expired statute of limitations, attorneys for the former NC State players maintain the organization uses iconic moments such as Lorenzo Charles’ buzzer-beating dunk to drive television viewership and bring in revenue. Attorney Elliott Abrams: “If the NCAA wants to show the 1983 game for the purpose of people watching the 1983 game, that's [allowed]. If they want to show the clips for the purpose of advertising anything other than showing the 1983 game, it's not.” The Cardiac Pack has lost most legal battles to date, but managed to appeal its way to the state Supreme Court — hoping to get yet another last-second win. The court is expected to issue a ruling in the coming months. (link)

A recent decision in Iowa marks 13 straight federal court victories for states against prediction markets since last August, per sports betting and gaming lawyer Daniel Wallach, who notes states have now prevailed on “36 out of 42 court rulings on preliminary injunctions, TROs, or stays/injunctions pending appeal, an 86% success rate.” (link)

Today’s scheduled court hearing between the SEC and LSU has been continued and will be scheduled at a later date, per CBS Sports’ John Talty. Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger adds: “The hearing's continuance not only follows LSU's decision to finalize its football roster without pro players, but LSU President Wade Rousse and [SEC Commissioner] Greg Sankey held positive calls recently as the school makes efforts to de-escalate the situation. LSU expressed its intention to abide by SEC policy and finalized its football roster in an effort to prevent the addition of pro players. Some issues remain, including with the program's basketball roster, where RJ Luis - he played in three NBA games - is committed.” (link, link

In an email to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, LSU President Wade Rousse confirmed the school does not plan to roster pro football players as the roster is finalized and locked, per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger.  Rousse: “LSU complied with SEC rules. The issue is moot.” (link)

The College Sports Commission’s latest NIL Go Data Report from July 1 through August 31 shows 12,283 deals were cleared for a total value of $227.25M, while 484 deals weren’t cleared at a value of $67.08M. Of those totals, $188.64M (83%) from 7,089 cleared deals came from associated entities, while $38.61M (57%) from 5,194 deals came from non-associated entities. The CSC does note that “in instances where a deal would comply with NCAA bylaws even if the entity were to be designated as Associated, the CSC often will clear the deal without engaging in any inquiry about Associated status and without changing the entity’s designation in NIL Go, for the sake of efficiency. In other words, some portion of the deals identified here in this ‘Non-Associated’ column likely belong in the ‘Associated’ column.” Over the reported span, the CSC actioned an average of more than 200 NIL deals per day, up from 94 NIL deals per day during the initial year of the CSC’s existence (June 2025-June 2026). In addition, 68% of actioned deals were resolved within seven days following the population of all required fields in NIL Go. Full report. (link)

Fox Sports’ Ben Portnoy reports the College Football Playoff is “in the active process of creating policies around corporate jersey patches and their place in the playoff amid broader conversations about the organization's future structure.” The jersey patch situation has had ripe conversation around two key components: how to address partnerships that might overlap with CFP sponsors; and whether ESPN will have any involvement in the integration of the patches. Portnoy: “Notre Dame is likely the most logical school to face such a conversation in a college football context, given SoFi is a direct competitor of Capital One, one of the CFP’s corporate partners. It’s possible, though certainly not finalized, the Fighting Irish wouldn't be able to wear their corporate patch given the exclusivity Capital One has purchased in that advertising category. … Those schools that have corporate partners that don’t overlap with the CFP might also face their own fees related to integrating their season-long patches. It's likely activation fees that fluctuate in value depending on the round of the playoff that would be paid to ESPN would be included in any formalized policy.” (link)

With the Senate set to return to Washington for a three-week legislation window before departing until November, Politico’s Calen Razo, Kelsey Brugger and Jacob Wendler observe that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is about to step into a political minefield with the body preparing to take up the Protect College Sports Act as soon as next week – with perhaps as many reasons for his caucus to oppose it as support it. Schumer will need to decide if he wants to steer his members toward helping Republicans reach the 60-vote threshold. One Democratic Senate aide with knowledge of the negotiations believes there’s enough party opposition to tank the measure on the floor as a coalition of labor rights groups and the Congressional Black Caucus warn the bill is exploitative. “A good number of Democratic offices aren’t eager to tick off the AFL-CIO and NAACP, screw over college athletes and deliver Trump and Senate Republicans a major political win weeks before midterms. Bad policy. Terrible politics.” (link)

The UCF-South Florida “War on I-4” football series might be dead for good, barring a change in scheduling philosophy from either side, per On3’s Brett McMurphy, who notes the Knights won’t play a home-and-home series against a Group of 6 team and the Bulls won’t play at UCF without a return game in Tampa, so for now, the former league rivals are at an impasse. Here’s what the ADs have to say…

UCF AD Terry Mohajir says the Knights’ financial model requires one P4 non-conference opponent alongside two non-P4 home games and the nine Big 12 games to guarantee seven home dates annually. “This has nothing to do with us snubbing our nose at another team in the state. It all has to do with our financial model. … I wish we could play a game, but it has to work financially.” Mohajir mentioned there’s one way the teams could restart their home/home series. “When USF gets into an autonomy conference it will be easier. That’s my game and I’d never have to leave the state to fulfill (the Big 12’s) Power 4 non-conference requirement. We’ll play USF every year.”

South Florida AD Rob Higgins says dissolving the rivalry costs both schools financially: “We’re both leaving a tremendous amount of money and media value on the table, which is a shame especially in the current landscape. … Both schools’ fan bases, budgets and brands deserve a consistent annual series. It’s definitely possible, even with current conference scheduling principles in play, but it has to start with a willingness to be creative, to collaborate and to compete. It appears that only one of the two parties is willing to do any of those three things.” (link)

Prairie View A&M AD Anton Goff appeared on HBCU Coaches Corner to discuss program alignment with Football HC Tremaine Jackson, capital investments, brand growth strategies, revenue generation through modern media distribution and more. Here are some takeaways…

On capital investments in athletic facilities and corporate partnerships: "We just put a brand new $1M-plus turf down on the field. Instead of the rubber chunks, we put wood chip fill in there so we can practice more. … Video board last year. … We're going to continue to grow the brand and continue to invest more in our program as we’re successful. ... I'm going to bring in more corporate sponsors. I'm looking at trying to get somebody to name our stadium. Our facilities are great, but almost all of them are called Panther this, Panther Stadium, Panther Baseball Field, Panther Soccer Field, all that stuff. So, I'm looking at trying to do some things with our third-party naming rights people."

As for expanding the university's geographic brand and media reach: "Growing the brand is huge for me. Everybody knows Prairie View in the Houston area, most of Texas, some other Southwest states, but I took us to Michigan State to play [football] because I wanted our brand to grow in that Chicago area, in the Michigan area. I took our baseball team to play at Wrigley Field, because I wanted our brand to grow in the Midwest. I want our brand to be nationwide. ... In order to do that, you’ve got to have a media team, you’ve got to have success, and you’ve got to be able to talk about your success and your story." (link)

ESPN plans to extend its “Women’s Sports Sundays” initiative into the fall by adding college volleyball (10 matches), college basketball, WTGL [the new tech driven women’s golf league] and MVPW boxing. The 11-week slate kicks off this Sunday with a volleyball doubleheader, including the championship round of the Paradise Invitational and a UCLA-Utah match. While the summer series’ goal wasn’t to reach ESPN’s 2025 “Sunday Night Baseball” average viewership mark of 1.83M, some WNBA games within “Women’s Sports Sunday” approached that figure with a July 5 Indiana Fever-Las Vegas Aces matchup and an August 16 Portland Fire-Phoenix Mercury contest drawing 1.6M and 1.4M viewers, respectively. The four NWSL matches shown over the summer through the initiative averaged 255K viewers, which was 106% better than the league’s 2025 regular-season average on ESPN. More, including the fall lineup. Rutgers Men’s Basketball HC Steve Pikiell has released a letter sharing the unfortunate news of his recent cancer diagnosis. From the statement, in part: “A couple of months ago, after not feeling 100%, I visited a team of doctors at RWJBarnabas Health. After undergoing various tests, I received the difficult news that I have cancer. … After a successful surgery, my doctors and I have a kick-ass game plan to finish treatment. I will still be involved with the team to the best of my ability as I navigate the challenges of the season through treatment. I have great confidence in [AHC Brandin] Knight, the rest of the talented staff, and our exceptional student-athletes. I know they will do an amazing job leading our program when I'm not able to. Just as I ask my team to fight and embrace challenges head-on, I'm going to attack cancer the same way. With the support of my doctors, my family, and now Rutgers Nation, I am confident we will be victorious.” (link
