House of Representatives Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) tells The Washington Sun’s Reese Gorman the House will not come back to vote on the Protect College Sports Act before the midterms: “We’re coming back as soon as the election's over and we have a lot of work we'll be doing.” (link)

College Football Playoff leaders are accelerating discussions to expand the format to 24 teams, negotiating directly with ESPN ahead of an October 9 exclusivity window deadline, according to Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger. The proposed format would feature 23 at-large bids and one spot for the highest-ranked Group of Six champion. To offset the potential elimination of conference title games, power leagues are seeking to recoup at least $250M in lost broadcast revenue, with CFP Executive Director Rich Clark noting: “The revenue is an unknown. That’s why we’re in this negotiating window.” Officials must finalize the expansion by December 1st to implement the new tournament for the 2027 season, a timeline that requires logistical shifts for first-round campus games and the annual Army-Navy rivalry. Clark adds: "We've worked through a lot of the other issues associated with [a 24-team] expansion and those things needed to happen before we started any kind of negotiation [over money].” Meanwhile, one “confident stakeholder” tells Dellenger: “If we can get a decent [TV] deal, we are definitely going to 24.” (link)
Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill in an appearance on the FCS Edge podcast discussed the state of FCS, private equity exploration, the financial realities driving national conference realignment and other topics, including the impending departure of North Dakota State to the Mountain West. Here’s what he had to say…
➤ On the hurdle to securing private equity investment for the FCS Playoffs: "The biggest roadblock we've kind of run into – and it’s kind of good and bad news – is the NCAA owns the rights to FCS football, the media opportunities, which they sell as a package to ESPN. And the primary drivers of revenue of that are ice hockey, softball, baseball, volleyball, women's basketball and FCS football. And so unpacking that in a reasonable time frame so that we could really dive into the private equity discussion, that's pretty difficult. … It’s not dead, but it’s not something we’re actively pursuing right now.”
➤ On the Protect College Sports Act capping revenue distribution: "The powers that be, the presidents, the commissioners, the ADs in this situation, they're under tremendous stress to make that work. And oh, by the way, the Protect College Sports Act just capped that at $47M. Well, where's that money coming from? Well, you know exactly where it's coming from. It's coming from those media rights contracts and that $40M gap between them and the conferences below them." (link)
Ole Miss AD Keith Carter outlined the department's infrastructure and financial roadmap during an appearance on the Talk of Champions podcast, during which he confirmed the university is exploring apparel sponsor alternatives as its Nike apparel contract nears its June 2027 expiration. The department is also advancing a public-private partnership to expand the Vaught-Hemingway Stadium north end zone by 5-6K seats with a specific eye toward student seating to accommodate growing enrollment demand. On testing the open apparel market: "We just felt like it made a lot of sense for the university, for the athletics department to see what was in the marketplace, to see what was out there. ... Hopefully, in the next week or two, we’ll have some more information on that." (link)
Tennessee AD Danny White made the following announcement via X: “Should we make it a thing? Feels like we should make it a thing. Inspired by Vol Nation’s incredible response to unusual pregame circumstances last week, Happy Hour at Neyland Stadium will be in effect for the remainder of the season! Gates will open three hours early, with half-priced concessions available for the first hour. I hope this is a small way we can show our appreciation to the best fans in the country. See y’all Saturday!” (link)
Washington State AD Jon Haarlow makes no secret of his pride over athletics’ managing to balance its books for the third consecutive year, telling CougFan.com’s Barry Bolton in a financial Q&A that the revenue side for FY26 will slightly outpace expenses, a notable development in today’s era of growing fiscal tumult. More…
➤ “I think one of the things that we continue to hammer home is we have landed at budget the last three years now ... That's something we're really proud of, especially at a time — I just saw this today — where you look at what other athletic departments around the country are doing, and the median deficit that they're running is $21M.”
➤ Donations contributed to the revenue rise, climbing 18% from the last fiscal year, to $9.2M. Haarlow notes that is growth that must continue with WSU “nowhere near the rev-share cap” and the school having devoted just $5.4M to rev share over the past fiscal year. “For the amount of dollars that we could raise, there's enough things that we could certainly spend dollars on. …. So it could be 2x and we'd still want to see growth there. But we had an increased amount of activity last year ... I would say personnel shifts and intentionality, and growing that external unit was part of the reason that we saw growth there. We also saw a change in behavior and folks starting to give toward rev-share opportunities.”
➤ What’s the biggest opportunity for WSU in fundraising? “We need to continue to try and expand that donor base. We need to continue to expand the CAF membership. And again, I know I hammer this home quite a bit, but 250K living alumni — we've got less than 3K CAF members. … We've got to continue to activate that alumni base for us to get there and realize what that potential is. So, a lot of room for growth, a lot of room for activity. You'll continue to see those fundraising numbers increase, I believe, because of the activity level that we have out there, but there's always going to be a need, and we've got to continue to chase those resources.” (link)

Kansas (111.08%) tops a contingent of 29 schools that have achieved a stadium capacity percentage of 100% or higher through Week 4 of the 2026 campaign. Comparing average attendance change YoY from 2025 to 2026, Sam Houston (172%), Northern Illinois (88.86%), New Mexico State (79.97%), Temple (68.22%) and UMass (54.33%) represent the top five for largest percentage increase. College football viewership across all Nielsen-rated networks is averaging 1.7M viewers through the first month of the season, marking an 11% decline from the same period in 2025, according to Front Office Sports' David Rumsey. Texas's Week 2 victory over Ohio State ranks as the most-watched game so far, drawing 14M viewers on ABC to become the largest regular-season audience on an ESPN platform in a decade. Only one other matchup, Ole Miss's win over LSU, eclipsed the 10M viewer threshold this year, a sharp contrast to 2025 when four games achieved that mark in Week 1 alone. Despite the live-game dip, ESPN College GameDay is averaging 2.83M viewers, tracking 5% ahead of its record 2025 pace. Rumsey adds more context "The next two months could bring viewership gains for the 2026 season, though, as the SEC and Big Ten get into the heart of their conference schedules primarily on ABC and Fox, respectively. NBC will air No. 3 Miami [FL] vs. No. 4 Notre Dame on Nov. 7; last year’s matchup in South Florida that drew 10.8M viewers on ABC was in Week 1." (link)
Fox Sports President of Insights and Analytics Michael Mulvihill notes that through September, total time spent viewing college football is up 0.2% across all outlets while the NFL is down 0.7%. He adds: “I’ve seen at least one story saying average CFB viewership is down -11%, and it is. But the number of games on national networks is up, so the higher volume negates the lower average viewership. To me total viewing time is the most correct way to look at a sport’s overall trend. … It’s tracking as a flat football season, which is fine. The NFL is as dominant today as it was a year ago. And for all the talk of chaos in CFB it’s not manifesting as loss of interest in the TV product. Perfectly healthy season.” (link)

Clemson will keep its 50- to 60-person pep band home for football games at Cal and Syracuse this season after the athletic department declined to increase the band's travel budget to cover expensive flights, according to The State's Chapel Fowler, who notes the Department of Performing Arts group carries a $329K operating budget for the year, supported by $175K from IPTAY and a baseline $150K travel stipend from athletics. Fowler notes that expanding the ACC footprint has significantly increased logistical costs, as sending the band to Cal would have required an additional $90K, while the Syracuse trip demanded another $60K. Band Director Mark Spede: "I fully understand the current climate in collegiate athletics and why the decision was made. ... Do I wish there was an unlimited supply of money to fund all of the things we would like? Of course. But we operate the band program with the budget we’re given and live within those means." (link)

The Arizona Board of Regents will vote tomorrow on an extension for Arizona AD Desireé Reed-Francois that would result in a new five-year contract running through March 2, 2032, per WildcatAuthority.com Senior Editor/Publisher Jason Scheer. Base salary for the deal would begin at $1.15M in year one and increase by $50K increments to reach $1.3M during the final year. Reed-Francois would also earn $250K annually through Additional Duties Compensation funded by the University of Arizona Foundation. Her original contract was set to end in 2029. (link)
Appearing on Tuesday’s “Cyclone Coaches’ Corner,” Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard confirmed to host John Walters that Saturday’s football game against West Virginia will serve as both his last home game and final day in the office. Pollard: “It hasn't been as emotional as I thought. I'm sure it will be Saturday night when we clean out my office." Per KCCI’s Aaron Marner, Pollard will attend next week’s Big 12 meetings and ISU’s October 9 road game at BYU, with plans to work remotely after that date until the school names his successor sometime in mid-October. Pollard originally announced back in July that he was expecting to step down from his role on June 30, 2027, but noted he’d leave earlier if the school secured his replacement. He later stated that he expected to be finished prior to the start of basketball season. The Cyclones have yet to announce an interim or permanent AD to replace Pollard. (link)
Highlighting a draft of a two-page letter intended to be sent to House leadership that encourages the elimination of the Protect College Sports Act’s expansion provision, Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger reports that more than a dozen House lawmakers, mostly in Florida and the Carolinas, have committed to signing it. The expansion provision, which caps power league membership at 20 schools and requires a three-year independent probationary period before a school can move leagues, stands as one of the most difficult hurdles for the legislation in the House. (link)
Speaking after the latest College Football Playoff Management Committee meeting in Chicago, CFP Executive Director Rich Clark says no decision has been made on expansion but that talks on the topic continue with ESPN’s 30-day negotiating window set to close on October 9. Clark tells ESPN’s Heather Dinich: “I think we've worked through a lot of the other issues that are associated with expansion, and those things needed to happen before we started any kind of a negotiation. [Money] is not the only consideration, but right now it is an unknown because we have no idea what the revenue that could be generated is.” Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger adds: “Clark says the eight-game second round of a 24-team playoff will ‘most likely’ be played on campus of the better seed. ‘Ideally,’ there would be an off week after the regular season before the playoffs would start.” (link, link, link)
MVC Commissioner Jeff Jackson joined The Field of 68 to discuss combining the men's and women's conference tournaments in St. Louis, roster retention and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ On why the league didn’t bring the men's and women's basketball tournaments together sooner: "Logistics. … We play in the same building that the St. Louis Blues play in. So, we have a limited amount of time that we can get our games in. With 12 teams, there just wasn't enough time. When the NCAA Tournament looked like they were going to go to 76 teams, we felt that we needed to be a little bit more purposeful in our approach to how we look at at-large bids. … That led us to a conversation of only bringing 10 teams to the tournament so that we could do that in the best fashion. Once we got down to 10 teams, then we were able to bring 20 teams into St. Louis based on the time period that we had in the building.”
➤ Player retention across the league: "I'm not sure how many conferences have done this, but every student-athlete that made our all freshman team in men's basketball this year came back. Okay? I think our schools understand the investment, the approach, the building of culture that they need to take on in order to be successful in this new environment. And I think they're working hard to make sure that they keep that at the north star in terms of having the best chance to be competitive. So, I think we've separated ourselves from some people and it'll be interesting to see how that manifests itself, especially when we get going in November.” (link)

➤ Creating Gold and Blue Enterprises to add order to NIL chaos: “We put a lot of effort into this because you want it to be set up in a way that it contributed greatly in cutting checks to the athletes but you didn’t want the downside. … We didn’t want Gold and Blue Enterprises to be competing with the WVU Foundation or the Mountaineer Athletic Club or Learfield and our media people. We wanted to make sure we were all working together. You know, high tides lift all boats and that was how we wanted it. They set up an organization that has done a lot of positives and done a lot of good for us. They handle our revenue sharing payments to our athletes and are also out raising a lot of money to help fund those payments and are out soliciting cap opportunities in marketing for our student-athletes.”
➤ On creating the $150M Stadium Tower Project: “[We] benefitted from not just assuming there was pent up demand for premium seating, but doing a study and knowing exactly what the pent up demand for premium seating was. … I think we did a good job of building a case that the stadium renovation wasn’t a vanity project but wasn’t anything other than trying to change our long-term trajectory. There are some people participating in stadium renovation solely through a desire to have better seats for themselves but we have a lot of people who understand those dollars are helping something that will make us more sustainable and competitive over the long term.” (link)
Arizona State Men’s Ice Hockey HC Greg Powers has been placed on paid administrative leave just two days before the squad’s initial two games of the season, following calls from student-athletes and the family of Matthew Mayich, who remains hospitalized on life support after suffering exertional heat stroke during an August 20 team workout. Powers has been temporarily replaced by AC Mike Corbett, who will guide the team during the search for an Interim HC. He’s served as part of Powers’ staff the past two seasons and was present for the team workout. (link)
Can college football programs manage the risks associated with utilizing AI? The Athletic’s Austin Meek seeks to answer that question with coaching staffs across the country now leveraging AI tools to optimize game preparation, roster management and athletic performance. Nebraska Football HC Matt Rhule began implementing Claude Code to analyze the Huskers’ practice schedules, game scripts, travel itineraries and practice GPS data to flag inefficiencies, such as play calls practiced repeatedly but rarely used in games. Florida operates an AI-Powered Athletics initiative using its HiPerGator computing environment to analyze over a trillion data points from its Athletics Databank, including GPS, neuromuscular performance and injury metrics, to predict injury risks and guide recovery. In addition to player tracking, Nebraska Assistant AD for Strategic Intelligence Sean Padden also utilizes ChatGPT to transform raw data from Championship Analytics into digestible narrative game strategy books for coaches. However, Victory Cybersecurity Consulting Founder Travis Whitesel warns programs of cybersecurity risks, advising staff not to input sensitive data into public platforms and that human oversight remains essential when handling AI outputs. Padden adds: “It will flat-out lie to you. It can be a wizard, but it can be a drunk wizard. You have to check the work.” (link)
An eventual move to a 24-team College Football Playoff could seriously impact when – and how – the Heisman Trophy gets presented, per On3’s Brett McMurphy, who notes the new format could potentially force the annual Saturday award ceremony to a weekday. Without conference championship week buffers, first-round playoff games could kick off immediately after the regular season, complicating player availability and travel to New York City. Heisman Trophy SVP Tim Henning confirmed the Trust has built contingency plans for various postseason models but emphasized that the award should remain a regular-season honor, ruling out a post-championship ceremony: “There is a minimal chance to move it after the national title game. I never say never, but this is as close to never as I can get. … We hope the College Football Playoff and conference commissioners can see the value and history of the Heisman, as well as Army-Navy being a standalone game. It’s good for all of college football. We don’t look at ourselves as a competitor to the College Football Playoff. The Heisman, Army-Navy, the bowl games – we can all have our place on the calendar.” (link)

Nineteen former members of the now-eliminated UC Davis women’s equestrian team have sued the university in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, claiming the school violated Title IX and seeking a $1.4M payout from the school to female student-athletes alleging they received less financial aid than their male counterparts during the 2023-24 and 2024-25 academic years. Per KCRA’s Jeremiah Martinez, the lawsuit also seeks damages for former and current female student-athletes for athletic financial aid of which they were allegedly deprived. The plaintiffs are seeking a court order requiring UC Davis to provide equal athletic financial aid in the future to comply with Title IX, while also requesting the court to certify the case as a class action, which could include other current and former female varsity athletes if approved by a judge. The school was sued earlier this year after the university eliminated the women's equestrian team as a Division I varsity sport back in January. (link)

Herbstreit's current contracts with both Amazon and ESPN, where he appears on College GameDay and serves as the network’s top college football game analyst, expire at the end of the current season.
