“We decided to do this because we know that students aren’t going to choose us if they don’t see us, and so it’s important to get as many students to campus as possible. So while $2,000 may not seem like a lot to some families for one year, $8,000 over the course of four years is important.”
Mandy Konkle
Albion College VP of Enrollment Management, to Inside Higher Ed, explaining the strategy of offering an $8K four-year scholarship to any admitted student who completes a campus tour.

Syracuse Chancellor Mike Haynie and AD Bryan Blair joined the Syracuse Sports podcast with Brent Axe to discuss the university's response to the changing college athletics landscape, support for the Protect College Sports Act, commercial operations strategy and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ Haynie on exploring new revenue streams and investment models, including private equity: "Nothing is off the table. … I am very comfortable thinking differently about how we approach this problem, differently both relative to our history at SU, but also relative to everybody else. … From my perspective, what we need is an advantage over other institutions, not just to be at some state of parity with other institutions. That means we're going to have to think differently about the enterprise and how we create new channels of revenue, how we monetize the brand in ways that bring dollars back into athletics that can be invested by athletics and becoming more competitive.”
➤ Blair on capitalizing on proximity to major media markets: "How do we lean into New York City being what it is? The media business capital of the world is four hours away from Syracuse. Nobody else can claim that at a Power 4 level in their backyard but us. How do we lay our ownership claim onto that and how does that enhance everything that we're trying to do? How do we think like a media company versus reporting and think about how we drive content that captures fans near, far and wide that want to be involved and make Syracuse the brand that everybody wants to be associated with."
➤ Blair on the timeline and urgency of conference realignment preparation: "The threat I see is a sense of urgency we need to have about this moment. This is not a, ‘well, let's hope in 10 to 15 years we figure things out. This is figure things out right now.’ The next 24-to-36 months may be the most important in the history of Syracuse athletics. … We have to be the best version of ourselves in this time period to be successful." Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard talks about his support for the Protect College Sports Act, the changing financial dynamics of the Big 12, the league’s adaptability in securing new revenue streams and more. Here are the highlights…
➤ On competing against high-resource programs within the Big 12: "I think that there's a couple schools in the Big 12 that think being the lead dog is because you spend the most money, but just because you spend the most money, you got to back it up with results. ... We like to say in Iowa our donors live poor and die rich because farmers tend to own a lot of land, but they're cash poor when they're living, but when they die, they have a lot of net worth. ... We've always been a program that's got to overachieve."
➤ Avoiding a fully professionalized minor league sports model: "We have 450 student-athletes and the majority of our student-athletes aren't getting revenue share and aren't getting NIL opportunities. They're here to get an education and get to play sport at the highest level. ... If it's just a transaction and we're going to make it all minor league sports, we have a history in this country. About the only minor league sport that really made it is baseball. ... Minor league football has never worked." (link)

Arizona’s private nonprofit arm, Arizona Sports Enterprises (ASE), is allowing the university to shield details of major corporate sponsorship agreements from public records requests, per Tucson.com’s Bruce Pascoe, who notes that includes a 20-year, $60M stadium deal with Casino Del Sol and a 15-year, $27.7M arena partnership with Alkeme. Critics and legal scholars warn that routing deals through independent affiliate entities subverts public oversight. More…
➤ Wildcats AD Desireé Reed-Francois on balancing commercial privacy with university transparency and adapting the department into a modern entertainment enterprise: "Commercial agreements contain confidential and competitively sensitive terms. So like any business, ASE is not going to want commercially sensitive items out there. … ASE allows us to really aggressively pursue new revenue, and it unlocks the potential of our national brand and our strong local partnerships. ... As college athletics evolves, ASE positions us to think more broadly as a sports and entertainment enterprise, allowing us to create new content, events, experiences that really extend beyond the game day."
➤ South Carolina-based attorney Clay Grayson, who helped create the ASE structure, on why non-state-funded nonprofits should remain exempt from public record laws: "FOIA is all about expenditure of funds and making sure you can track where money's going, that nobody's stealing it, that you're getting the value, the quid pro quo for that you paid for. It’s a watchdog to guard against fraud and abuse and waste, that kind of thing. If a nonprofit ever gets any support financially, any grant, any free ride, any free use of space, anything like that, then they are subject to FOIA forever. However, I believe the corollary is also true — that if they've paid for everything and they have been meticulous from day one, I don't think it's subject to FOIA." (link)
Louisiana Tech and Louisiana accidentally disclosed their internal athletic revenue-sharing budgets through documents posted for a recent University of Louisiana Board of Supervisors meeting, according to the Louisiana Illuminator's Piper Hutchinson, who notes a newly passed state law, Act 818, allows universities to shield team-specific financial distributions from public records requests. The documents revealed Louisiana Tech budgeted $1.98M to pay players (including $1.2M for football and roughly $500K for men’s basketball), while Louisiana allocated $1.5M ($591K for football and $647K for men’s basketball). Additional system disclosures included $750K at Northwestern State, $460K at Grambling State and $454K at Southeastern Louisiana. Following a request from UL System attorney Brandon DeCuir to delete the legally obtained documents, First Amendment attorney Scott Sternberg defended the publication of the data: "Documents that are made publicly available by the government are fair game, even if the government made a mistake. It’s a long-held principle in the law that as long as [journalists] obtained it legally, [they] can report on the documents." (link)
Cara Group Travel, Boardwalk Sports, and Galgorm are partnering to launch the NI Collegiate Invitational, establishing the first DI golf tournament held in Northern Ireland. The inaugural championship will feature up to 16 men’s programs competing in team and individual formats during the regular season from September 5-9, 2027, at Galgorm Castle Golf Club. Boardwalk Sports CEO Rich Ensor: "This is exactly the type of innovative event that can help redefine what’s possible in collegiate golf. Today’s student-athletes are looking for experiences that combine meaningful competition with personal growth, international exposure, and lifelong memories. By creating a championship of this caliber in Northern Ireland, we are providing universities with an opportunity unlike any other currently available in collegiate golf.” (link)

➤ Central Connecticut State President Zulma Toro is resigning amid allegations from the leader of the university’s administrators’ union that she has “subjected Central’s employees to retaliation and intolerable working conditions, including bullying, humiliating and intimidating employees, during her nine-year tenure as president,” per CT Insider’s Natasha Sokoloff. Virginia Tech collaborated with Daktronics on the installation of a new video board at Lane Stadium, bringing improved views of live video, replays, stats and more. The new end zone video display measures 44.5-feet high-by-96-feet wide and features a 10-millimeter pixel spacing as well as variable content zoning, allowing the Hokies to present one large image or multiple content zones to support game presentation, sponsorship messaging and fan engagement. The upgrade also deployed a custom Daktronics audio system, which is integrated into the facility’s video and scoring system, and included upgrades to the stadium’s audio infrastructure, delivering unified control and monitoring capabilities to help venue operators manage and maintain connected sound systems. Alabama installed 120 new cameras and implemented WaitTime crowd intelligence at Bryant-Denny Stadium to optimize fan flow and upgrade concessions. SBJ's Joe Lemire reports the data-driven renovations resulted in renumbered entry gates and the deployment of frictionless technology, including seven concession stands and six market locations equipped with Mashgin self-checkout, as well as 12 additional grab-and-go sites. The system's efficiency has already generated outside revenue opportunities, with Live Nation expressing interest in booking future events following a recent Morgan Wallen concert. Alabama CTO Rand Harris: “Those changes are based off of data we’re pulling off of reports from games and seeing how fans actually flow through the stadium, and what we assumed was accurate in some places and totally wrong in others. We certainly knew the counts and what gates were important but not how they showed up, when they showed up, and what enticed them to show up at different times.” (link)

Austin Peay announces that Joe Maynard and the Maynard Family have agreed to relinquish the existing naming rights to the baseball field at Raymond C. Hand Park and the football field at Fortera Stadium. APSU President Dr. Michael Licari: “In the modern collegiate athletics environment, the ability to continually reinvest and allocate resources within the program is crucial to maintaining a competitive edge. The selflessness demonstrated here by the Maynard Family will have an incalculable impact on the long-term viability of our athletics department, enriching the lives of countless current and future student-athletes.” (link)

House Republicans currently have no plans to return to D.C. prior to the mid-term elections to take up a permitting bill should one pass the Senate, per Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman. “They don't see it as a viable option to bring the chamber back at this point in the cycle. House Rs would be also wary of rubberstamping a Senate permitting bill. And with a three-vote margin, it would be very difficult to get it through. Plus, attendance issues. Could things change? Sure. But at this point, they are extraordinarily bearish about coming back.” (link)
U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) has filed an amendment to the Protect College Sports Act that would cap coaching salaries at $5M a year. Noting it’s one of 35-plus amendments filed to the bill, Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger adds: “Most of them have little chance of being accepted.” (link)
Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek addressed fan frustration and defended the department's newly modernized football front-office model in a conversation with On3’s Brett McMurphy, believing that he should have started sooner on rebuilding the program’s machinery prior to the arrival of Ryan Silverfield. “Are we where we want to be? Absolutely not. I’m not going to make excuses for that.” More takeaways…
➤ Yurachek adds: “Looking back, I would have established a general manager-type position earlier. College football changed incredibly quickly with NIL, the transfer portal and now revenue sharing. We were asking the head coach and his staff to manage responsibilities that increasingly require an entirely different level of specialization … We are trying to build an Arkansas football program that can compete year after year, not chase one season. The (ultimate) goal is to give our coaches better information, better support and a much stronger system for building and retaining talent and competing to win in the toughest conference in the country.”
➤ Despite the business side of athletics exhibiting growth with self-generated revenue up 78%, ticket sales having jumped 91% and over $235M in total fundraising over the past five years, Yurachek understands the fan frustration and the spotlight on football’s struggles. “I am frustrated as well, but at the same time, I think any fair evaluation has to include what is actually happening inside the program. That work began last year and is happening every single day. Where I think we have fallen short is making the work inside the building more visible so our fans, our community, understands the changes we’ve made, significant changes, to build a modernized, successful and sustainable program.” (link)
Alabama AD Greg Byrne visited with Front Office Sports’ Kennington Smith III to discuss pressing issues for ADs. Here are some of his most notable comments…
➤ What’s the single most crucial issue facing athletic directors today? “There’s a lot of different issues: trying to find a sustainable model as our market has changed dramatically, trying to slow down all the litigation we continue to face. … I think there are a lot of football programs now that are losing money. The expectation level is to continue to provide support to our student-athletes academically, athletically, socially, medically, nutrition at a really high level, … but then also have compensation that goes along with that. For some, it absolutely makes business sense, but for many others, it doesn’t. And so you’re starting to see the discussion at a more high level about what’s the structure going forward to give you a chance to make this work.”
➤ What's the challenge of balancing equal investment of all sports versus cutting back on certain sports to save or re-purpose money? “It’s very challenging. Our coaches, our staff, we pour our heart and soul into the young people in our program, and I just think it’s critical that we continue to have an ethical and moral responsibility to support our young people, and if we lose sight of that, then shame on us. That doesn’t mean every kid will have the perfect experience. That doesn’t happen. There will be challenges with it, but there still is a lot of good at what takes place here, and and and we can’t ever lose sight of making sure that we have the young people on the front of mind in the decisions that we’re making.” (link)
Queens Charlotte will carry forward through its merger with Elon as Queens College, with athletics set to continue competing under the Royals moniker. “The Queens name, the Royals tradition, the residential experience and the institution’s historic commitment to service will remain central to the campus’ future. A vibrant undergraduate community will remain at the heart of the campus, with students studying across the arts and sciences and professional fields, living and learning together, participating in campus traditions and competing as the Royals. Athletics will remain an important part of the undergraduate experience and Queens tradition as the broader merger advances.” (link)
An $8M advance payment from Nike is helping North Carolina cover its 2027 expenses, per WRAL News’ Brian Murphy, who notes the university invested the pre-paid funds from the final two years of its 2018 Nike agreement into a “quasi-endowment fund,” growing the principal to $14.2M. Pending UNC Board of Trustees approval, the athletic department will utilize $9M of that money to “address increasing operational demands and support the athletics financial plan” after posting a $15M deficit last year that was covered through reserves. NC State is also pursuing new revenue streams by seeking trustee approval to approve a $2M naming rights proposal for a renovated dining hall and recreation room in the Wendell H. Murphy Football Center. UNC Board of Governors Budget Committee Chair Kirk Bradley: “Athletics matter to who we are. The question this board will wrestle with is never whether athletics matter, it's how we sustain what matters on a sound financial footing.” (link)
Southern Miss extended its partnership with Forrest through Learfield’s Southern Miss Sports Properties to serve as the initial jersey patch partner of Golden Eagles football. The regional health system’s “for life” patch debuted on the program’s uniforms back during USM’s season opener against Alcorn State (Sept. 5). (link)
Hawai’i and the Bank of Hawai’i have agreed to a seven-year extension of their naming rights agreement for the Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center, ensuring the moniker will remain on the facility through June 30, 2037. The extension supports the "Our Team, Hawai'i's Team Fund,” while continuing to provide programmatic, operational, administrative and educational support to the athletics program. (link)
San José State has generated more than $5.5M in fundraising support to complete the baseball stadium transformation at Excite Ballpark, part of $19M in combined philanthropic and community support brought in by SJSU Athletics since July 1. The project is set to include a dedicated clubhouse and coaches’ offices, along with access to a new weight room and indoor and outdoor hitting and pitching tunnels. The project will also celebrate the program’s history by naming the field in honor of former HC Sam Piraro, who led the Spartans to the 2000 Men’s College World Series. (link)
Nebraska has unveiled details for a two-phase Memorial Stadium re-seat tied to a $600M renovation of the south and west bowls, per The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman. The process will happen for the 2027 season, when capacity dips to 65K, and again for 2028 and beyond as seating rebounds to 80K. The Huskers decided to discontinue its legacy priority seating program, which requires all season-ticket donors and applicants, including 24K grandfathered seats, to select new ticket locations for ‘27 and ‘28. Deputy AD/CCO Kortne Gosha. “There are going to be some that don’t like anything you say, because it’s change. And there’s going to be a lot that see the upside and the opportunity, (when) they get in this thing and experience how efficient it is, how their experience dramatically changes.” NU doesn’t expect to displace any season-ticket holders and in two years, when the project is done, the get-in price for a season ticket will drop from $420 to $299. The department also projects the venue upgrades will boost annual game-day revenue from $67M to $95M. Gosha adds: “Everybody thinks they’re getting priced out of the stadium. It’s not the case. There is something for everyone. There is an option for everyone.” (link)
Tulsa collaborates with Playfly Sports to expand its premium seating offerings in advance of 2026-27 basketball season through the addition of four luxury suites at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The suites will contain 16 seats; a TV and an opportunity for private catering and drinks. Playfly, which has served as the Golden Hurricane’s ticket sales, service and donor-relationship management partner since 2021, will provide the upfront capital for the renovation. (link)
Central Michigan has broken ground on the university's new 40-acre, men's and women's golf practice facility, located immediately west of Theunissen Stadium. The project will provide indoor and outdoor practice facilities, including putting and short-range practice areas; multiple hitting bays with golf simulators; locker rooms; a fitness area; and other amenities.
