Bruin Report Online’s Tracy Pierson with a key update on the leadership change at UCLA: “There is a bit of news we’re reporting here, and it’s a clarification: [Tim] Harris is the permanent head of UCLA athletics. The appointment of Harris was announced as being on a pro bono and interim basis but, according to sources, Harris and Chancellor Frenk have agreed to Harris being permanent CEO. His title is CEO and Director of Athletics. The terms of the agreement will be worked out at a later date – when Harris and Frenk have time to take a breath. Undoubtedly they’ll get in some facetime with each other this weekend, since we’ve heard both Frenk and Harris plan to attend the UCLA football game in Berkeley on Saturday.” (link)

UAB Men’s Basketball HC/Interim AD Andy Kennedy took several questions from media members on a number of topics with his most notable comments on if he’s interested in leading the Blazers from the AD chair on a full-time basis: “That is not the intent right now. My goal is to do what is best for UAB. I want the best person for UAB. … I've been in this space now, I'm going into my 20th year as a head coach, 30 years in this space as a coach. I've been at a number of different institutions that do it a lot of different ways. So again, I just wanna be able to lend that. This is my life. You know when you're dealing with running a university at the scope of UAB, athletics is a small part of it. Well, this is what I do. This is my life and so I want to be able to be a resource.” (link)

The SEC filed a brief with a Louisiana court ahead of today’s injunction hearing, which includes an affidavit from commissioner Greg Sankey. From the affidavit: “Acting pursuant to direction I received on August 26, 2026, from the SEC Presidents and Chancellors in a continuation of the official meeting referenced in the prior paragraph, I issued the memoranda attached as Exhibits C and D to all SEC member institutions and coaching personnel. These memoranda do not and did not create new SEC Bylaws or rules. The memoranda simply provide guidance from the SEC office, as directed by the Presidents and Chancellors, concerning the enforcement of the Bylaws and imposition of penalties and sanctions against SEC member institutions, CEOs, coaches, and other SEC athletics personnel. No SEC President or Chancellor voted against the direction set forth in these two memoranda; the President of Louisiana State University abstained from the vote authorizing the issuance of these memoranda.” More via Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr sent a letter to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey calling for LSU to be suspended and removed from the conference if it rosters former NFL players: “As the Chief Legal Officer of the State of Georgia, I would like to know how LSU intends to proceed in light of recent developments in the Louisiana litigation. If LSU does in fact roster one or more pro athletes or demonstrates concrete plans to do so, we would strongly encourage the SEC to take all measures available to address this conduct, up to and including suspending and/or removing LSU from the Conference. Conference members have the freedom to associate with institutions committed to following NCAA and Conference rules. No institution should be allowed to ignore the obligations of Conference membership while continuing to receive the benefits of membership. … We reserve the right to use all legal means necessary to protect the University of Georgia, student-athletes, and the integrity of college athletics.” Full letter. Louisiana AG Liz Murrill has filed an amicus brief on behalf of the state ahead of today’s eligibility case concerning former NFL players returning to college. You can guess which side she’s on. (link)

The U.S. Senate Democratic caucus remains divided over whether to pass the Protect College Sports Act ahead of the midterm elections, according to Semafor's Burgess Everett. While Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) estimates up to half the caucus could support the legislation—including 13 firm commitments—a coalition led by Senators Chris Murphy (D-CT), Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) continues to mount opposition. The internal debate has fractured traditional political alliances, pitting the AFL-CIO, NAACP, and Congressional Black Caucus against HBCU leagues and major power conferences over concerns about crossing labor unions. Murphy indicated that support for the measure remains precarious as lawmakers review the legislative framework: "As people learn more about the bill, they have a lot more questions. And so it seems pretty uncertain as to whether it has the vote." Meanwhile, Coons notes: “We’ve got four Democratic co-sponsors now. We have nine more who are firm yes-es and have either voted for it in committee or publicly committed themselves to support it. So that’s 13 Democrats right now ...  As I’m calling through the caucus, we have another 10 who are either a strong yes or a lean yes.” (link)

Meanwhile, Colorado State FAR/Sacred Cow publisher Kyle Saunders outlines the legislative hurdles facing the Protect College Sports Act (PCSA) in the House even if the bill clears the Senate, pointing to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) enforcing party discipline 62 days out from the midterm elections. While Senate opposition remains led by Senators Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Cory Booker (D-NJ), Saunders noted that any Senate momentum could stall in the House because the current floor text has shifted left of earlier drafts like the SCORE Act: "If Rs hold their discipline … the bill will have to move further left to secure any D votes, which means it would be amended and then we could play ping pong back and forth while it dies, or attempt to reconcile, or it just fades because there's no path." Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark appeared on Big 12 Radio & touched on adopting a 16-team College Football Playoff before ESPN's December 1 deadline: "I'm not sure the economics are there at 16. ... You might still have to give up your champ game depending on the scheduling. ... I'm not sure there's enough economics to support the Power Four conferences giving up a champ game in a 16-team format. There are more economics in a 24-team format to offset some of those losses." Wisconsin AD Shawn Eichorst engaged in a wide-ranging conversation with the Bleav in Badgers podcast. Here are the highlights…

"I'm really a head coach-centered administrator. And so I think about the head coaches in almost everything that I do … because I know if I do that then they'll take care of the student-athletes."

Leadership guidance received from former AD Barry Alvarez: "Know your people. Care about your people. Everybody knows about the don't flinch, but there's some truth to that. Have some confidence. Keep your shoulders up. That's how we lead."

Pushing back against the professionalization of college athletics: "This isn't a professional deal. As much as everybody wants to drag us in the professional piece, that's not what we're doing. I mean, we're in the business of educating. ... We should not be collectively bargain[ing]. We should not be in the pro jargon. There's a time and a place for that. If you want to go do that, go do that. That's not what we're going to do here at Wisconsin." (link)

Navy AD Michael Kelly reflected on his first year leading the academy during a sitdown on the Eye on Annapolis podcast. D1.takeaways…

Expanding support services for student-athletes: "We brought in more support for the Midshipmen as it relates to more trainers, more nutritionists, more sport strength and conditioning people. And then we've also looked on the business side. How do we … generate the revenue ... promote the storytelling of what’s happening here? So we’ve just kind of found ways to increase the bandwidth of our staff.”

On stadium renovation timelines for the south end zone and north pavilion: "It will [be ready]. And then we'll have a north pavilion that we'll build over the next two seasons which will really round it out ... You should be able to start construction in early ‘27 on that and then it'll probably take until right before the season of ‘28."

Setting long-term postseason goals including playing in the College Football Playoff: "I expect by then to have been the first and hopefully multi-appearing service academy to appear in the college football playoff. ... The trifecta is to win the CIC, to win the conference, and to go to the CFP." (link)

Butler VP/AD Grant Leiendecker recently sat down with The Butler Collegian’s Sawyer Goldwein. Will the Bulldogs be able to avoid cutting sports due to NIL moving forward? “I’m feeling more [optimistic]. I feel like we’ve made some hard decisions and had to really tighten things up from a budgetary standpoint. The scary part in this environment right now is the way things continue to change and [I] feel like it continues to be more and more unsustainable. … We have to be very prudent and thoughtful about how we’re using our resources and being really strategic with our budgeting, [but] we are growing our revenue significantly. Fundraising’s increased. Our partnership with PlayFly has grown our corporate sponsorship revenue significantly. … I feel like we have the university support, and we’re in a good place with the current number of programs we have here and the overall impact that our sports have on the university.” (link)

The Memphis men’s basketball program is partnering with the Memphis-based nonprofit Prostate Education Awareness Council on the first “Slam Dunk For Prostate Cancer,” set for September 26 at the Laurie-Walton Family Basketball Center. Coinciding with Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, the event will provide free screenings and aims to raise awareness and educate men in the Mid-South. Attendees will be treated to lunch and have access to the Tigers practice. Memphis Senior Deputy AD Tim Duncan, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year and had surgery in July, has played a big part in bringing the event to fruition. Duncan: “It feels like a mission. It’s been cathartic working on this event. We don’t talk about this stuff enough. Everything I heard throughout my process was, ‘If you catch it early, it’s treatable in most cases.’ That’s a message we can all get behind.” (link)

Rutgers has distributed 24,263 season tickets ahead of its 2026 football opener against Massachusetts, down just 12 tickets from 2025 despite coming off a 5-7 finish, according to NJ.com's Brian Fonseca. Paid season ticket packages rose by 117 to 22,523, while comped tickets dropped by 127 to 1,740. Open season ticket accounts stabilized at 4,487—an 11-account increase—halting a 24.1% decline from the prior cycle when the program lost 1,436 accounts. (link)

According to The Daily Memphian’s Frank Bonner II, “Memphis men’s basketball has sold 1,988 season tickets for this season. Last year at this time, they had sold 4,000.” (link)

Miami (FL) recently summoned three AD candidates for in-person meetings, per the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, who notes Executive VP for University Operations and External Affairs Rudy Fernandez and Miami Board of Trustees Chair Manny Kadre have been heavily involved in the process. Finalists will likely interview with UM President Joe Echevarria, but nothing is imminent over the next few days. Jackson adds: “In this new NIL era, UM continues to seek a non-traditional hire as opposed to a current college AD. The negative reaction to former [Florida] Panthers President Michael Yormark appears to have torpedoed his chances; he was a favorite before his name leaked many, many months ago.” (link)

NCAA Lead Outside Counsel Rakesh Kilaru visited with Tulane Sports Law Program Director Gabe Feldman on the SportsWise podcast. Here are some key takeaways…

On why early antitrust challenges lost momentum in federal appellate courts: “Antitrust cases have evidentiary requirements and the plaintiffs really were not meeting those. ... There's this old line, it's a standard line of antitrust law, but antitrust law is about competition, not competitors. So, one competitor can't come in and say, ‘I'm being excluded from the market. I'm being harmed. That's an antitrust case.’ They have to show that something's happening market-wide. They have to show that wages are being suppressed. They have to show that there's not enough opportunities that we're holding back output or roster spots in the context of college sports.”

As for the legal flaws of state-level breach of contract claims against the NCAA manual: “The theory is the NCAA manual is a contract with student-athletes. ... We don't think it's true. It's actually a membership agreement between schools and the NCAA about how they should conduct college sports from a membership organization perspective. … The theory is somehow that student-athletes who competed for four years under one version of the manual and got everything they got under that manual, that somehow the NCAA has breached their contract by having a new contract going forward, a new manual with a new rule. ... It is like going to a car dealership and buying a car, and then a month later the new model comes out and going back to the dealer and saying, 'Hey, you breached my contract. I want the new car.' ... If you have a contract and you get everything you thought you were going to get under the contract, you have received the benefits of the contract. You don't get to sue saying, ‘I want someone else's contract that I like better than mine.’" (link)

Sports business consultant/College Sports Council member Mark Ganis joined Puck Sports Media Correspondent John Ourand on The Varsity podcast to discuss federal college athletics legislation as he believes: “This desperately needs to get approved because if it does not, college sports may very well implode because of its own inabilities to be able to operate in a consistent manner with all of the great inconsistencies of court decisions being made in different jurisdictions around the country.” More from Ganis…

On skyrocketing college spending draining university academic funds: “You've got the ultra important matter, which is the incredible amount of money that is being spent on college football and college basketball that is squeezing out all of the other sports, women's sports, non-revenue sports, Olympic sports. ... Many of the universities, the athletic departments, which used to make money for the academic and student affairs parts of universities are now actually draining and they have to increase student fees and take money from academics in order to be able to pay for the athletic departments. This is an untenable situation and cannot continue.”

Does President Trump’s College Sports Council remain active? "It still exists. It's still vital. We had the one big meeting at the White House, but we've had many meetings via Zoom with people all around the country. … The focus right now, that all culminated in legislation that the Senate has before it, that has been endorsed by Democrats and Republicans alike.” (link)

Senate Democrats considering a bipartisan deal to pass the Protect College Sports Act find themselves in a tricky spot, per Semafor’s Burgess Everett, who notes fractures in the Democratic coalition raise questions about the legislation’s ability to clear the narrowly divided House even if it can pass the Senate. Expectations are for Senate Democrats to conduct a conversation about the bill sometime this month. Everett: “Democrats should not assume there will be another chance to address college sports next year and should weigh the bill on its merits. If the party’s senators block this bill, Republicans may not be in a mood to start from scratch in January should they lose the House or Senate. But the political calculus is complicated: [President Donald] Trump doesn’t have many bipartisan accomplishments to brag about. He soured on the housing bill before it even became law. Given his love for sports and spectacle, I would imagine he would tout this bill loudly if it passes. Democrats must decide whether that matters to them or whether Republicans would gain a real edge from the bill passing.” (link)

Bain Capital’s Private Credit Group has acted as lead lender and administrative agent for a $250M senior credit facility to Playfly Sports and Access Holdings to support Playfly’s continued growth. Bain Capital Credit VP Megan McKenzie: “Playfly has built a differentiated platform across sports media, sponsorship, and technology, helping rights holders and brands create greater value from highly engaged audiences. In a dynamic and increasingly complex sports landscape, we continue to see opportunities to invest in businesses that help bring together key participants across the industry.” (link)

Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard sat down with the Area Podcast to discuss his upcoming retirement, the development of the multi-phase CYTown mixed-use development, stadium concert economics and more. D1.takeaways…

On the economic impact per stadium concert and top-line ticket revenue: “We did more ticket sales for that George Strait show, because $575 was the average ticket price, than a whole season of football. So, we can say a stadium show is like another home football game, that was almost like a whole other football season. The economic impact of one stadium show to central Iowa is in the $10M to $15M range. … We're going to do more shows. There'll be a big announcement in September about a big show for next year, which I think will probably be the biggest and best show we've ever had in Jack Trice Stadium. And then there are a couple other shows that are kind of tentatively holding dates for us in 2027. … Luke Combs, George Strait, we netted over $1M for the athletics department.”

Leveraging CYTown to generate new non-tuition revenue streams for the university: “CYTown is a university project. … This is an opportunity for the university to diversify. If the university wants to be successful going forward, it can't just be tuition, fundraising, and research dollars, they've got to find other ways to generate revenues. And CYTown is an amazing opportunity for them. … [The new McFarland Clinic] brings almost a thousand unique patrons on a daily basis, between 150 employees and almost 750 to 800 appointments a day, Monday through Friday. That's a thousand people coming to that space that aren't coming there today.” (link)

Sponsorship deals with Duke, North Carolina and Oregon will see Edward Jones pay Learfield a combined total of almost $34M over a four-year term, per On SI’s Bri Amaranthus, who notes the agreements cover Duke and UNC men’s and women’s basketball and UO football, men’s and women’s basketball and Olympic sports. As part of its pact, Oregon will place the financial services company’s logo on each of Autzen Stadium’s 25-yard lines this season, according to SBJ’s Irving Mejia-Hilario, who notes Edward Jones will also have in-stadium signage, videoboard spots, PA mentions and rally towels for the home opener. In addition, the facility’s suite level will carry the company’s name, among other activations. The entire package will provide the company with a collection of promotional and sponsorship benefits, including use of university trademarks and logos; financial-literacy event opportunities; certain student-athlete NIL activation rights; and more. UMass inks an expanded, multi-year partnership with Baystate Health to feature the healthcare system’s logo on both 25-yard lines at McGuirk Alumni Stadium, starting with the 2026 football campaign.
