“I think that’s really scary for finance people who have made their identity based on being the one who has the right answer, or doing that analysis. But I think it’s really exciting for those who want to lean into telling the story behind the numbers…helping to be part of the decisioning of the business and pushing things forward.”

CollegeAD shares the latest on Air Force’s AD search: “According to sources familiar with the process, officials have begun putting together an internal committee to help select a new AD. That committee, we were told, will make a recommendation to Superintendent Lt. Gen. Paul Moga, but ultimately, it'll be Moga's call on who the next AD will be. As for a timeline, one source described the school as currently being in ‘no rush.’” (link) For those interested in pursuing the position, the D1.dossier for Air Force is ready to help you save time and be better prepared. The FBS Oversight Committee ruled that it lacks the authority to overturn Western Michigan's 13-12 loss to Michigan on September 5, despite acknowledging that Big Ten replay officials failed to follow proper protocols when restoring one second to the clock before the game-winning touchdown pass and that "the outcome of the game would have been different." The decision follows formal appeals from MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher, which prompted the governing body to issue updated timing guidance via National Coordinator of Officials Ron Snodgrass and Secretary-Rules Editor Matt Young: "The official time for all college football games is the time displayed on the in-stadium game clock. When a replay review requires time to be restored or otherwise adjusted, the replay official's decision will be based on the embedded game clock contained within the program feed. If the broadcaster is unable to provide an embedded game clock, the replay official will use the game-clock graphic displayed as part of the broadcast feed." (link)
Athletics Admin’s KC Smurthwaite posits that Albuquerque serves as New Mexico Athletics’ greatest advantage, with new AD Ryan Berryman wanting the Lobos’ to be part of what defines the city. “What makes this place special is that we are the flagship institution in a city and metro area that’s over a million people. There are no major league pro teams here. And whether you went to UNM or not, people identify and embrace the Lobos. If you want to be a part of that where people are going to talk about the Lobos at the coffee shop, to the grocery store, to church, to everything in between, this is a great place for you.” More…
➤ While generating more revenue without stripping away the identity that made the asset valuable in the first place is an example of the balancing act programs such as New Mexico face in the industry’s current era, for Berryman, it’s the people that remain the most important resource. “Retention of our student-athletes and our coaches is vital in this era. How people perceive us outside of this ZIP code, outside of these state lines matters. We’ve been really intentional about telling our story online. We’ve invested a lot into the digital strategy and creative content space.”
➤ “We are a flagship member of the original [Mountain West], and we will act like it. We can sit and talk about what we don’t have or what could have happened or what should have happened or whatever. Or we can just go out and prove it on the field and on the court and in the classroom. Let’s be the best versions of ourselves. The noise will always be there at a national level, but what can we do here within our buildings, within our walls, to make this place proud and just to excel?”
➤ Smurthwaite says Berryman is unusually accessible for an FBS AD, including on social media, where questions, complaints and unsolicited ideas can arrive at any hour. Berryman views that less as a nuisance than a reflection of New Mexico’s business model. “We have thousands of stakeholders, and every one of them matters. We don’t have one huge mega donor that’s going to give us $100M and bankroll everything. We have to be the Green Bay Packers model here. Every opinion matters. And we’re not going to have every great idea come from within these four walls of the office.” (link)
The sports executive search industry is expanding as properties increasingly rely on professional headhunters despite a crowded field of new competitors, according to SBJ's Terry Lefton. Prodigy Search Founder and CEO Scott Carmichael reported his firm is tracking toward its best year with business up at least 30%, a jump driven largely by private equity investments funding mixed-use venue developments and women's sports properties. TurnkeyZRG Chairman/CEO Len Perna observed that private equity and PE-backed sports agencies are pushing more roles to search firms, while The Team’s Amy Segal highlighted a rising demand for technology specialists to improve general business decisions. Excel Search & Advisory President Chad Biagini put it like this: “PE dollars continue flowing into sports and for good reason. The industry is healthy. Capital is the fuel.” (link)
Texas Tech will feature a State Farm logo on special ‘Let’s Ride’ football uniforms for tomorrow night’s matchup against Houston. Red Raiders AD Kirby Hocutt: “State Farm is the perfect brand to further enhance the debut of our ‘Let’s Ride’ uniforms from Adidas and its Patrick Mahomes brand. We look forward to celebrating this partnership Friday night in front of a sold-out Galaxy Stadium and a nationally-televised audience on Fox.” (link)
Oklahoma President Joseph Harroz Jr. says the North Park Arena litigation gives OU the “full green light for the Sooners’ planned $1.3B entertainment district,” adding: “When we think about what makes universities great, part of that is not just what you experience for the four years you’re here or in your graduate work here. It’s what opportunities you have to stay around that ecosystem after you graduate.” (link)
Northern Arizona AD Richard Duran announced a reorganization of the department's senior staff. The reshuffle elevates Stayson Isobe from his previous role as Assoc. New leadership additions include Brent Appel returning to the university's sports medicine team as Assoc. Lehigh has suspended all team-related activities for its men’s swimming team after learning of hazing in the program. A spokesperson tells SwimSwam: “Acts of hazing are antithetical to the values of our community. DePaul this week officially broke ground on its new $50M basketball practice facility. Blue Demons AD DeWayne Peevy: "This facility will certainly be transformational for both our men's and women's basketball programs. But I want everyone here to understand that this is bigger than basketball. What we're building will serve all 15 of our sports and 230-plus DePaul student-athletes. They will train here. They will recover here. They will receive sports medicine and performance support here. They will fuel their bodies here and learn how nutrition impacts performance and lifelong wellness. They will learn and develop here. They will build relationships here that will last long after their time at DePaul is finished.” The facility is slated to be ready by fall 2027. (link)

Wake Forest’s mixed-use development, The Grounds, has identified its first five retail tenants ahead of its fall 2027 opening. Per SBJ’s Bret McCormick, the first wave includes: The Jimmy – a Mediterranean and Italian-inspired restaurant from N.C.-based restaurateur Jim Noble that will fully occupy the two-story building nearest Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium; The Fieldhouse Tavern – another two-story space that will feature a food-forward sports bar from Winston-Salem restaurateurs Tom and Brandon Brock; Bagels & Co. – a breakfast and lunch concept with a strong presence in college towns and communities; Tremble – the second state location for the fast-growing Pilates franchise; and Allegacy Financial – a multipurpose location for the financial institution. Retail village portion owner Front Street Capital and Carter is collaborating with the university on tenant selection with Wake set to benefit financially over the long-term through ground lease income derived from the retail village, as well as from potential revenue sharing opportunities. Adidas has secured a multi-year extension to remain the exclusive apparel and footwear sponsor of Overtime Elite (OTE), expanding its scope to include the Overtime Select high school girls' basketball showcase and the OT7 7-on-7 football league, according to reports from Forbes and Yahoo. Per Youth Sports Business Report’s Cameron Korab, the partnership trades performance gear, NIL education and professional development programming for early brand access to top high school prospects and exposure to Overtime's digital footprint. While OTE has produced more than a dozen professional athletes, former top-five NBA Draft picks Amen and Ausar Thompson (Nike), and Alexandre Sarr (Decathlon) ultimately signed shoe deals with competing brands upon turning pro. Adidas North America VP of Sports Marketing Chris McGuire: "Overtime is one of the most exciting and innovative platforms in grassroots sports. This extension reflects how much we value what Overtime has built and the opportunities it creates to build meaningful relationships with rising athletes early in their careers." (link)
Student-athletes need meals that support performance and recovery. But on the road, food choices often come down to whatever is nearby — with limited variety and few options that align with nutrition goals.
ezCater gives teams access to a broader range of restaurants and caterers, making it easier to provide balanced meals, more variety, and options athletes will actually want to eat.
That’s made a difference for Crown Legacy FC, where Sports Dietitian Katie Best uses ezCater to spend less time coordinating meals and more time focusing on athlete nutrition.
“ezCater lets me be an actual sports dietician. It allows me to delegate almost all the logistical pieces of coordinating meals so that I can really just focus on the nutritional piece of writing the menus and making sure that athletes get what they need to perform.”

Detroit Mercy AD Robert Vowels will retire at the end of this academic year. President Donald Taylor: “I want to thank Robert for his leadership, the many ways he has shaped our program and supported our student-athletes over the past 13 years. We look forward to honoring him throughout this academic year and working together on the next chapter of UDM Athletics.” CSA Search & Consulting will assist with the search for Vowels’ successor. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) says the Protect College Sports Act would likely be taken up by the House following the midterm elections and not before as Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman reports Thursday’s House voting schedule has now been cancelled with today serving as the legislative body’s last in session before the midterms. Sherman: “Johnson said he would try to build support for the Senate's NIL bill if it passes. He says it’s a lame duck item, most likely.” Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) says he may fill the amendment tree on the college sports bill, which would allow it to pass faster but also prevent amendment votes from senators. “We'll find out what level of cooperation we can get from Democrats. But that's an option. This has been a pretty well vetted bill through a long process, including committee markup and everything else. And I think, for the most part, with the big vote that we had last night, most people should be ready to go on it.” (link, link, link, link)
Top college football programs are deploying annual player compensation budgets around $50M, according to an extensive, multi-source investigation by The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel, David Ubben and Sam Khan Jr. Highlighting a direct correlation between financial investment and on-field success, the data reveals that seven teams with at least a 50% probability of reaching the College Football Playoff maintain an average roster budget between $41M and $46M, while 34 programs owning less than a 5% chance average between $19M and $23M. Spending disparities exist across the P4, led by the SEC ($33M-$38M average) which boasts 11 of the nation's top 20 spenders including Texas ($45M-$55M), LSU ($47M-$50M) and Texas A&M ($45M-$50M), and the Big Ten ($27M-$31M average), where Ohio State ($49M-$54M) and Oregon ($48M-$54M) formulate a distinct league top tier. The ACC ($21M-$25M average) features a strong pace-setter in Miami (FL) ($45M-$50M), while 12-of-16 Big 12 ($18M-$22M average) programs maintain budgets starting below $20M, though Texas Tech ($38M-$42M) ranks near the top despite voiding an estimated $3M-$4M contract after the departure of transfer QB Brendan Sorsby. Miami (FL) has reportedly agreed to a 10-year, $200M-plus contract to return to the Nike brand starting with the 2027 football season, per the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, who notes the deal is expected to be worth slightly more than $20M annually. That’s well above the reported $6.5M annual value of its current 12-year agreement with Adidas, which is set to expire next June. With the contractual right to match Nike’s offer by a Tuesday deadline, Adidas presented a compelling counteroffer, but did not fully match the terms. “UM would have been fine with Adidas matching Nike’s offer — ‘they’ve been a great partner,’ a source said — but UM is excited about Nike.” The school plans to utilize the extra revenue for athletic department costs, NIL allocation and potentially toward an on-campus football office building that is still in the early stages of development. Miami’s annual payout in the deal is believed to be the largest Nike allocation, putting aside the company’s unique, lucrative arrangement with Oregon, where the company is based. (link)
“We’ll be out of business if we go to 24 teams.” That’s what one bowl executive whose game hosts two Power 4 teams told On3’s Brett McMurphy about potential College Football Playoff expansion to 24 teams. A larger playoff field would mean fewer available teams, forcing bowls that currently feature P4 matchups, such as the Citrus Bowl, which pays at least $4M each to the SEC and Big Ten, to potentially choose from unranked, seven- or eight-win teams instead of top-25 programs. D1.takeaways…
➤ McMurphy: “The bowls’ doomsday clock started ticking in 2014 when the four-team playoff began, and the countdown sped up considerably when the field expanded to 12 teams in 2024. The transfer portal, NIL and player opt-outs have only accelerated the decline. Now teams are even refusing to play in bowls.”
➤ In response, several bowl directors are considering shifting their games to pre-season exhibitions held in late August to remain viable, though calendar conflicts, player opt-outs, portal timing and loss of title sponsors like Cheez-It and Tony the Tiger pose major obstacles.
➤ A bowl executive director: “We have to look at all options. What’s the appetite for the No. 25-ranked team and unranked teams that barely miss the playoff, to play in a postseason bowl? There has to be that conversation.” A P4 AD adds: “I grew up on the bowls. Our fans didn’t want to go to our bowl (last year), because it wasn’t the playoff. I hate this, but nobody wants to go to bowls anymore.” More. (link)
In addition to several Class of 2022 players seeking a fifth year of eligibility, the status of many key international prospects is a major men’s basketball storyline to monitor, per CBS’ Jon Rothstein, who notes that per a recent updated NCAA rule, international players who never received above actual and necessary expenses are not professionals and will be eligible to compete in 2026-27. Rothstein adds: “Lots of key decisions ahead considering when this rule was amended.” (link)
Minnesota’s football season ticket sales continue their downward trend, per the Pioneer Press’ Andy Greder, who notes the Golden Gophers reported 29,289 total football season-ticket holders for the 2026 campaign, 22,173 non-student and 7,116 student packages, marking a 7.3% decrease (31,605) since 2024. The decline comes as the athletic department projects a second-straight year facing a $9M budget shortfall in FY27. During FY25, the year prior to the House settlement, the Gophers reported $163M in revenue, with ticket sales accounting for $19M. AD Mark Coyle would like to schedule more P4 games, while seeing the continuation of nonconference games such as Saturday’s home match-up against Akron. “I wish I could see around the corner. I think those games have value and serve great purpose because when you play an Akron, [when] you play an Eastern Illinois, those teams are getting guarantees. When I was at Boise State, we would play guaranteed games, and those are such a big part of your revenue stream for athletics. If those games came to an end, that would have an impact on those programs, because they just lost revenue coming into their program." (link)

The Federal Reserve has unanimously approved a quarter-point rate hike to between 3.75% and 4%, marking the central bank's first increase in three years, according to The Wall Street Journal’s Nick Timiraos. Led by newly confirmed Chairman Kevin Warsh, the decision signals a sharp reversal after cutting rates three times late last year to guard against a labor-market shutdown, directly undercutting White House assertions that inflation isn’t a concern. Fed officials cited sticky inflation driven by the ongoing Iran war, escalating energy costs, with diesel prices approaching record highs and crude hovering near $100 a barrel, and an AI-driven investment surge that continues to bolster economic demand. The decision leaves future policy paths flexible, though 16 out of 18 meeting participants penciled in at least one additional increase this year. In its policy statement, the rate-setting committee said “today’s policy action will support a timelier return to the committee’s 2% [inflation] goal,” citing elevated uncertainty due in part from geopolitics while omitting previous language that had attributed elevated inflation partly to supply shocks. ➤ UCLA announces that admission to all regular-season home football and men’s and women’s basketball games is now free for all eligible undergraduate and graduate students, starting this Saturday when football hosts Purdue in its Big Ten opener at the Rose Bowl. ➤ Colorado State and Wisconsin have mutually agreed to cancel their September 2027 football match-up, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who notes: “Colorado State initiated the conversation as a way to play seven home games in 2027, and they are expected to add another home game. (Wisconsin is expected to replace CSU with UMass in 2027.) This will mark the fourth-consecutive year CSU has played seven home games, a rarity for [the] Group of Six.” (link)
