UIW has narrowed its AD search to a group of finalists, per CollegeAD, which reports: “Sources say three candidates have been asked to participate in a final round of interviews, which is expected to take place early next month. It's our understanding that the finalists include sitting ADs from multiple levels of college athletics.” (link)
NC State AD Boo Corrigan and Chancellor Kevin Howell sent a letter to fans noting the Wolfpack “will rely on the counsel and expertise of trusted advisors,” including alumnus and former Pittsburgh Steelers HC Bill Cowher and former Wolfpack standout/NFL veteran Dewayne Washington, in the search for a new football head coach. House plaintiffs’ attorney Steve Berman weighs in on the Big Ten’s decision to implement rules aligning with the framework of the Protect College Sports Act: "To the extent the rule is implemented immediately it would directly violate the settlement. Our team is reviewing the rule and intends to fight any proposed limit to what the NCAA and conferences agreed to under the House settlement. Any cap that would keep schools from facilitating deals is a step in the wrong direction, and that the Big Ten tried to give this rule the moniker of 'protecting' college sports is a tired spin on its old hat arguments." (link)
While Clemson AD Graham Neff and North Carolina AD Steve Newmark support the broader principles of the Protect College Sports Act, they continue talking to Congress about modifying Section 205, which mandates that schools switching conferences must spend three years as an independent. While a congressional committee aide defended the requirement as a necessary safeguard to prevent private equity firms from circumventing membership caps and establishing a super league, the universities argue the restriction limits their ability to adapt in a rapidly evolving economic environment. Neff: "We don't believe Section 205 is critical to achieving the important protections that the rest of the bill provides. We think institutions should be able to decide how to strategically position their departments for long-term success." Newmark tells ESPN’s David Hale: "We appreciate the bill attempting to tackle many of the key issues impacting college sports today. We wholeheartedly agree on the need to implement a uniform and national standard to bring a measure of stability and clarity to collegiate athletics. What we've not received clarity on is the purpose of the independence clause, particularly with the existing language, which caps conference membership." (link)
James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis notes that a “new federal court ruling has implications for coach buyouts.” Here’s what you need to know…
➤ “The issue: Paying someone’s debt can create income even if they never receive the cash. For schools covering an incoming coach’s buyout, the tax treatment could change the cost of the hire. This month, in Levandowski (Kravitz v. U.S.) No. 4:25-cv-02713 (N.D. Cal. 2026) involved Uber paying a former Google employee’s debt.”
➤ “The court rejected the argument that he had no income because he never controlled the money. It also rejected the argument that the indemnification arrangement operated like nontaxable insurance. Those findings give additional support to challenging similar arguments used to exclude coach buyout payments from income.”
➤ “That’s an analogy, not a ruling specifically deciding coach buyout taxation. The ruling also does not mean every coach buyout is discharge-of-indebtedness income; compensation characterization still requires its own analysis.”
➤ “It is an interesting twist that would be a big change for most schools that treat the buyout of the coach’s old contract as an ‘ordinary business expense’ and don’t include it in the coach’s income as a benefit. I am not suggesting making a change yet, but consider reviewing the documentation supporting your current tax position on coach buyouts in light of the similar circumstances addressed in this case.” (link)
The Big 12 has fined UCF $100K for chants targeted at the BYU football program on Saturday. The Athletic’s David Ubben reports the league “also amended its sportsmanship rules and will assess on-field penalties for continued violations.” A statement from the league reads, in part: “While the Conference recognizes the pregame protocols followed by UCF and immediate actions taken during the game, including removal of some individuals responsible for the conduct, discriminatory behavior has no place in the Big 12.” (link)
Meanwhile, Cincinnati AD John Cunningham explains in a statement that the “Big 12 has notified us that we will not be fined following Saturday's field rush, as our safety protocols were successfully implemented and allowed the visiting team and game officials to safely exit the field following our victory over Texas Tech. … As we prepare to welcome another Top 10 opponent to Nippert Stadium this Saturday, let's keep bringing the incredible energy and passion that make this place so special, while always respecting our opponents and prioritizing the safety of everyone involved.” (link)
The NABC Tournament Advisory Committee plans to expand its evaluations during the upcoming 2026-27 campaign, while continuing to provide feedback for the second straight year to the DI Men’s Basketball Committee. This year’s group will not only evaluate and compile top-16 rankings of teams potentially warranting consideration for the NCAA Tournament bracket’s top-four seed lines, but also submit rankings of the top 16 teams from leagues outside of the historically multi-bid ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC to the committee immediately prior to its January, February and March meetings. Former coaches who are slated to serve include: Scott Davenport (Bellarmine); Ed DeChellis (East Tennessee State/Penn State/Navy); Fran Dunphy (Penn/Temple/La Salle); Seth Greenberg (Long Beach State/South Florida/Virginia Tech); Jeff Jones (Virginia/American/Old Dominion); Phil Martelli (Saint Joseph’s/Michigan); Norm Roberts (St. John’s); and Gary Waters (Kent State/Rutgers/Cleveland State). UTSA Men’s Basketball HC Austin Claunch has been suspended following his arrest on suspicion of drunk driving. Roadrunners AD Lisa Campos: “The university is reviewing the circumstances and will determine appropriate next steps, including the length of his suspension. Assistant Coach Nick Bowman will serve as acting head coach during his absence. UTSA Athletics holds its coaches, staff, and student-athletes to high standards of conduct and accountability. We take this matter seriously and will address it in accordance with university policies and procedures.” (link)
Wake Forest AD John Currie released the following statement about his baseball program: “As shared recently, our head baseball coach Tom Walter is currently away from the team on leave, and assistant coach Eric Niesen is leading the program for the time being. I understand that our inability to answer questions or share additional information, in accordance with standard University policy, can raise concerns. I am proud of our players and coaching staff for remaining focused on concluding our fall training programs - including a 13-3 win on Sunday versus West Virginia to conclude their fall schedule - and buckling down for the stretch run of the academic semester. Thank you for your understanding and continued support for the Diamond Deacs.” (link)

The Big East has unveiled Scenario Central, a new series of interactive tools on BigEast.com designed to offer fans a clearer look at the race for Big East Championship qualification and seeding. Set to debut this fall with field hockey, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and volleyball, fans can select winners of remaining league games, view projected standings and championship seeds, follow individual team paths and explore every combination that could determine the championship field down to goal differential and set-by-set score margins. The platform will continue beyond the fall, expanding to men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s lacrosse later in the 2026-27 athletic campaign, with additional features to be introduced throughout the season. ➤ ESPN men’s hoops analyst Dick Vitale says he’s full speed ahead to work games this season, telling the East County Observer’s Jay Heater it’s part of the fight: “It’s not easy battling cancer. There is lots of chemo and radiation. But I always think positive, and I have faith. If you don’t, cancer will eat you alive. My advice is to stay active. If you do nothing, lay in bed, it will eat you up.” Dickie V adds: "You need to have that energy and enthusiasm. So I won't accept any project unless I can finish it. If I can't be me, I won't accept that assignment." (link)
➤ ESPN/SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum says he’s unsure about his contract with the company after it expires at the end of football season, telling Awful Announcing: “The contract technically runs out in July, but I’m a college football analyst. So at the end of January, I will probably start contemplating exactly what is next. But I would be foolish to tell you anybody who is in the last year of a contract doesn’t think about it. Troy Aikman thinks about it, so does everyone else. But I would also be foolish to tell you I know what I’m going to do next.” Finebaum adds: “I intend to continue doing what I’m doing, which is doing a show of some sort, but I don’t know how it will be constructed. These are always awkward situations that are probably best not discussed in the public airwaves, but then again, here we are.” (link)
The Scout Jacksonville Classic Just Got Bigger and It’s Making History
This November, 15 Division I basketball programs descend on Jacksonville for four days of early-season hoops. And for the first time in the event’s history, the women’s game takes center court.
The 2026 Scout Jacksonville Classic (Nov. 22–25) debuts an inaugural nine-team women’s bracket — the deepest field of the week — featuring Vanderbilt, Arizona, Virginia, Oklahoma, Oregon State, UAB, Middle Tennessee, George Washington and Montana State. They join a six-team men’s bracket for a slate that runs from a season-opening golf tournament through the final buzzer on Nov. 25.
It’s the centerpiece of Scout’s season-long title sponsorship of RBG events, running from an October exhibition in Rock Hill, S.C., all the way to FestiBall in Fort Lauderdale in December.
For Scout, a company built by athletes, for athletes, putting a women’s field on this stage for the first time isn’t a footnote. It’s the mission.
Tickets are on sale now. See the full bracket, schedule, and matchups.

NCAA President Charlie Baker appeared on The Hoops HQ Show with Seth Davis and Andy Katz to discuss legal battles over the five-in-five eligibility rule, upcoming TV negotiations and more. Key takeaways…
➤ Preparing early for upcoming media rights negotiations: “The big thing we need to do with respect to both the ESPN deal and the Skydance deal … is we need to start thinking about that now, because there are all kinds of deals that are coming up over the course of the next five years or so that involve all sorts of sports. The world associated with this is way bigger than it was when this thing was originally negotiated. ... I think you can expect us to probably put together a working group to start talking about how this should work certainly in the next 12 months, even though it's very far away.”
➤ Drawing audiences to Olympic championships and projecting record volleyball sales: “We had better attendance and better viewership across just about everything in the championship portfolio we've got, and not just in Division I, also in Division II and Division III. I think our fan database is helping with that. ... Our open rate on our emails to people about whether they'd be interested in buying tickets to one of our championships is 55%. That's pretty much unheard of. ... We've sold an extraordinary number of seats already for the volleyball championship, which is in San Antonio. … I think we're probably going to sell more than 30K tickets a night for that Final Four.”
➤ On the June timing of the age-based eligibility policy and subsequent lawsuits: “If you waited until now, there's no doubt in anybody's mind that we would've been sued long before now by people looking for an extra year, simply because the whole idea of an age-based eligibility system with five years of hard eligibility was going to get challenged in the court anyway. ... This idea that there was some magic time at which the membership should have made a decision to move forward on this, I think they probably did the right thing, which is they said, ‘We're probably going to get sued by somebody somewhere anyway for changing the rule. We should probably just make the decision at the point in time in which we decide we actually know what it looks like and how it's going to work and make sure that every class to the extent possible gets what they were promised when they started.’” (link, link)
The Big Ten is officially adopting a conference-level rule limiting member institution involvement in third-party NIL agreements in preparation for the Protect College Sports Act’s anticipated passage. Key details from Big Ten Council of Chancellors/Presidents Chair/Indiana President Pamela Whitten…
➤ “It is imperative our member institutions can begin to plan, budget and build their rosters approximating the act’s economic structure. … The Big Ten conference-level rule limits institutional involvement in arranging third-party NIL agreements to a maximum of $27.5M per member institution. Combined with institutional NIL payments permitted by the House settlement, the conference rule restricts institutional involvement in student-athlete NIL agreements to a total of $49M per institution, approximating the economic framework of the PCSA.”
➤ “The rule effectively requires Big Ten institutions to initiate the financial and operational mechanisms necessary to comply with PCSA limits in advance of upcoming signing and transfer portal windows. The rule is effective immediately and each institution and its lead athletics staff must attest their compliance with the rule. This policy applies to institutional action only as student-athletes remain free to pursue NIL opportunities with any entity (associated or non-associated) on their own. The Big Ten rule does not replace any existing rules or policies.” (link)
More on the Big Ten’s decision from Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger: “To be clear, the Big Ten isn't independently ‘raising’ the cap. It is permitting a certain amount of school-affiliated third-party NIL deals (~$27M), which must still pass through the CSC. It is penalizing schools for exceeding a set amount of school-affiliated third-party deals. … Attorney Jeff Kessler tells Yahoo Sports that he's drafting a letter to the Big Ten in regard to its new cap rule that penalizes schools for exceeding a cap on school-affiliated third-party NIL. If the bill doesn’t pass, the league is violating the House settlement, he says.” Kessler: “They can smoke all the dope they want. It won’t happen. If the legislation passes, they can do this. If not, they are violating the agreement. They’ll be getting a letter to this effect.” (link, link)
At yesterday’s DI Board of Directors meeting, a motion to overturn the men’s college soccer split-season calendar proposal was introduced but failed, per The Athletic’s Henry Bushnell, who adds: “That's a significant win for advocates/coaches. But this still has to survive the rescission process. Deadline is next Friday, Nov. 6, at 5 p.m.” (link)
American Commissioner Tim Pernetti appeared on Wake Up Call with Dan Tortora to discuss a number of topics. Pernetti’s perspectives…
➤ Utilizing quantitative media analysis in its process to invite James Madison into the league: "Following JMU's formal application to the American, we conducted a process that is very detail oriented and very data driven. ... It's focused in six primary areas. Institutional academic alignment is certainly one, competitive strength and trajectory is one. The institutional investment and what they're doing across the whole university, financial sustainability and member value, and then certainly brand and media value and their reach and geography and operational fit. We put all that stuff into a blender and it's a real process because we look at the data, we pull it apart, we go after more data. We used multiple sources of analysis on this, including quantitative media analysis and market dynamics. And at the end of the day, after completing the evaluation, we had a unanimous vote."
➤ Protecting current conference members from financial revenue dilution: "When I started as commissioner … one commitment we made was we won’t dilute the league financially. And while we had a lot of interest in new members coming to us, interested in the American, we won't entertain any conversations that require our current membership to be diluted financially. That doesn't make any sense. They've created all the value, so we're going to dilute the value that they've created for someone that hasn't created any value? That's sort of how the expansion circus goes. It has to be about new value. … We expect you to invest, we expect you to be competitively deep. We expect a high quality student-athlete experience." (link)
UTRGV SVP/AD Chasse Conque joined the Jim's Razorback Pizza Hotline to discuss launching the Vaqueros' football program, the school’s significant investment in athletic facilities and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ Highlighting fan enthusiasm surrounding the football program: "We have 12K people on our season ticket wait list, which is hard to imagine. We've sold out all 10 home games that we've played at home at Vackar Stadium at this point. Everything that you want from when you start a program from scratch and as an institution, which you want football to bring to your university and to your community, we're getting to live and see that right now."
➤ Investing in department facilities: "Over the last four and a half, five years, we've built nearly $200M in new facilities for all of our sports. Obviously football is a big piece of that. We built a 45K-square-foot operation center for our football program. ... And then we purchased and renovated a stadium that's not very old. … We were blessed with a $20M gift that's now named for the Vackar family. And so we call it our one-two punch. We think [it’s] one of the nicest stadiums in the country, certainly at the FCS level, and then we have an operation center that’s first class in every manner."
➤ Football helping elevate attendance across non-revenue sports: "It has galvanized our region. It has helped all of our other programs across the board, basketball, baseball, volleyball. ... We're drawing 4, 5, 6K for baseball games on Friday, Saturday night. Seven years ago, that number was 500 people at those games. We finished 23rd or 24th in the country in Division I in baseball attendance this past year. The University of Oklahoma was maybe 34th and they won the national championship. And so to see our market come together, our region come together has been truly remarkable.” (link)
St. John’s VP/AD Ed Kull describes the early-October exits of university SVP/COO Joe Oliva, Deputy AD/COO John Diffley, Asst. AD for Ticket Operations Melissa Manno and additional employees as “tough” because of their institutional and personal connections to the university as alumni. “It’s challenging to try and fill those voids. It’s not easy or possible to do that, so how do we continue to pivot and try to lean on others?” Alongside university lay-offs affecting 55 staff and administrative positions in August driven by campus-wide enrollment struggles, The Torch’s Dean Koutouratsas notes the athletic department also absorbed budget cuts, headcount reductions and staffed fewer GA positions. More from Kull: “Change is never easily accepted, especially from a culture change. But, I think our folks are resilient and passionate. They’re gritty. We have to continue to lean on that. …I’m really proud of our team because many have taken on multiple jobs and responsibilities. I also want athletics, especially the basketball piece, to be a marketing driving force for the rest of the campus.” (link)
