“The idea that the institution should afford them an opportunity, regardless of our ability to assist them finishing, is an unfortunate narrative. That’s where we begin to have problems. ... I’d much rather us interrupt the cycle.”
Wayne A.I. Frederick
Howard University Interim President to The Chronicle of Higher Education on shifting enrollment strategies.

CollegeAD reports that Rice’s AD search “may soon get underway. Sources familiar with the process tell CollegeAD that officials from Parker Executive Search were recently in Houston to meet with Rice officials. Sources say Parker is already in the early stages of vetting candidates. The belief, we're told, is that the Owls are hoping to have a new AD in place by Thanksgiving.” (link) For those wanting to be in the mix, be sure to utilize the D1.dossier for the position. (link)
Arkansas Men’s Basketball HC John Calipari was asked about Razorbacks AD Hunter Yurachek at SEC Media Days and replied: “The best thing for this program: we're not in debt. Now, there are not many programs around the country that can say they're not in debt. We're not in debt. He's been great for me. Part of the reason I took the job is, I sat down with him and I was comfortable. Everything he said he would do, he did. I'm looking around the room, saying, 'What? Are we losing our minds here?' He has kept us to where we can now figure out how we're going to go forward. But I understand you got ADs being fired around the country. You know why? Because their programs are in debt: $200M, $100M, $150M, and so they're firing ADs now, but he's going to do fine. I wish we'd have won that football game for our football players, our coach, and Hunter. But you don't know what's in the cards. I just know he's a good man." (link)
Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger chronicles James Madison’s rapid ascent in college athletics, culminating in the recent move to the American and notes the rise stems from a multi-decade administrative alignment that views successful sports programs as a primary enrollment driver. Formerly an all-women's institution known as Madison College, longtime administrators traced the department's transformation back to a key decision in the mid-2000s to eliminate 10 sports programs to comply with Title IX, allowing the university to fully resource its remaining 18 teams. Under Football HC Billy Napier, Dellenger observes the 6-0 Dukes are capitalizing on a player-led culture while the university plans a multibillion-dollar campus project featuring a commercial district and a rebuilt east side of Bridgeforth Stadium. While the future looks bright, Dukes GM Cliff Wood acknowledges there will always be financial hurdles to overcome: "We're going to need money to maintain. Same as moving from FCS to FBS. In order for us to be successful, people have to put their money where their mouth is." (link)
Houston AD Eddie Nuñez spoke with TUDN Radio Houston’s Cesar Procel about football attendance challenges, Hispanic community outreach, the need to grow athletic department revenues and more. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ Early kickoff times impacting stadium attendance: "[An] 11 o'clock game doesn't make it easy on a Saturday. There's a lot of families that have kids' events. When you start thinking about, well, I've got kids, they're playing games, basketball, football, this, that, birthday parties. It just gives them another reason why not to come. We have a huge and tremendous fanbase. The thing for us now is letting them understand, come enjoy the experience. ... Having a 6:30 game is a lot different than having 11 o'clock. Look, we have a great product, we have a great coach, we have a great environment. Now it's putting it all together."
➤ Setting attendance targets for home games: "My staff knows we're pushing everything to try to get 40K-plus in there. Now the reality is if we're at 35K, that's still better than where we were. What I don't want to do is be where we were last week. … For me, it's let's get 10K students, let's get 40K people there. If we get 35K at the end of the day, am I going to still be proud? Absolutely. … Because we're going to make it great. And that environment, if they do what they're capable of doing, it's going to help our team be even better than they are."
➤ UH’s most pressing need: "Right now, because of everything, it's finding money. It's trying to find new ways to create new revenue. And for us, that may be through businesses, partnerships with local businesses. One of the ones that I'm starting to really get a better relationship with is Goya and others. Hispanic companies, other companies that are based here in Houston, getting them to help us really elevate what we need financially and be partners with us." (link)
San Jose State AD Jeff Konya appeared on the HQ Sportscast to discuss the athletic department's record-breaking fundraising pace and ongoing facility upgrades. Key takeaways…
➤ Economics of modern roster construction: "In this new world environment when we came in as the caboose budgetarily in the old Mountain West and we're not that far from where we are the caboose in the newly formed Mountain West with some new members trying to put revenue share, institutional rev share and NIL plan so we can retain our competitiveness into that framework has been somewhat of a challenge but we've been able to do it. … The results are the results and there’s an ultimate scorecard with everything in intercollegiate athletics.”
➤ Improving the east side of the football stadium: "What we need to compete is to be able to get more revenue into our program. And the only way we're going to be able to get more revenue into our program is to have more premium opportunities in our football game day. ... Unfortunately when we looked at a solution way back in ‘21-22 at one price point, it's nearly 2x or 3x to that now given the inflation and some of the cost materials that have happened." (link)
UTSA officially opened its $35M, 53,000-square-foot basketball and volleyball training facility, and the San Antonio Express-News' Greg Luca notes the complex provides the Roadrunners with two full-sized practice courts, hydrotherapy spaces, and a creator lab, eliminating historic athletic scheduling conflicts at the Convocation Center. UTSA President Taylor Eighmy used the grand opening to announce a separate $20M baseball development center slated for a December groundbreaking as the athletic department upgrades its infrastructure to match American Conference standards. SMU is accelerating plans to add a varsity men’s lacrosse program, according to Inside Lacrosse's Terry Foy, who explains the “effort comes as the Mustangs evaluate an opportunity to compete during the 2028 spring season, taking advantage of the unique volume of mostly Ivy League seniors in the NCAA Transfer Portal and their remarkably accomplished résumés, as 2025 national champion Cornell has 11 players in IL’s Portal Tracker and ’26 champion Princeton has eight.” Foy also reports that a dedicated fundraising campaign has already secured nearly $20M in donor pledges to support the new program and renovate the Crum Lacrosse and Sports Field. The addition would give the ACC its sixth men's lacrosse program, restoring an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the conference for the first time since 2016. Foy adds: “SMU is unique among nearly all its Division I (much less Power 4) peers for its ability to add men’s lacrosse without an offsetting women’s support. Sources tell IL that Mustang officials intend to add a women’s lacrosse team, as well, likely targeting a 2031 or ’32 debut.” (link)

Big picture: ESPN delivered a 10% YoY increase in total viewers across ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN on ABC during FY26, marking its sixth consecutive year of linear television growth. The network captured 31% of all sports viewing among total viewers and Adults 18-49, outperforming second-place Fox Sports by nine percentage points and NBCUniversal by 13 percentage points. Female viewership rose 14% YoY to represent 34% of the overall network audience, while total cross-platform reach expanded to an average of 239.4M monthly users across linear, digital, and social properties. Programming highlights included the College Football Playoff National Championship game between Miami (FL) and Indiana averaging 28.9M viewers, an NFL AFC Divisional Playoff matchup between the Texans and Patriots drawing a network-record 37.9M viewers, and the Knicks-Spurs NBA Finals Game 5 averaging 24.5M viewers. Kalshi is updating its rulebook to allow for financial penalties against users who harass athletes on social media. In a filing with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the company categorized athlete harassment as an "impermissible activity" that could prompt account deactivation and law enforcement referrals. Kalshi is also partnering with tech firms Signify Group and IC360 on a "Bad Actor Program" to match abusive social media posts with registered betting accounts, joining DraftKings and Fanatics in utilizing the monitoring service. Sportico’s Dan Bernstein points out the policy adoption follows rising concerns from professional athletes and leagues regarding the intersection of sports betting and online abuse, which Kalshi addressed in a statement: "The initiative is focused on abusive, threatening and potentially criminal behavior, rather than legitimate criticism or discussion of sports performance." Hawaiʻi Receives $1.5M Gift From Kanaka Foundation For NIL
The historic gift comes at a timely moment as UH Athletics builds momentum on its annual Giving Week (October 9–19) campaign. Named in honor of the Hawaiian concept kuʻupau—meaning to exert all effort, give everything or "go all in"—the endowment builds on the Kānaka Foundation's previous $1-million gift for STEM students and ensures student-athletes receive long-term NIL support and competitive resources.
"I believe we are only scratching the surface of what UH Athletics will become," -- Matt Elliott, Athletics Director

NCAA President Charlie Baker, speaking today in Chicago at the Women Leaders in Sports Convention, says the Protect College Sports Act will “absolutely” make college sports more sustainable, adding: “As a former governor, I signed thousands of pieces of legislation, and I can promise you, I never signed one that was perfect.” On conferences stepping up to make and enforce their own rules: “I think it could be a good thing. … [The Brendan Sorsby case] was a really good example of where we lost and they won. … I think the place where it gets complicated would be around something like eligibility, right? Because if you want to have a national championship, there's a whole bunch of things where you need to have a national rule.” As for what the association may look like in five years, Baker joked that there would probably be a 48-team CFP by then but that March Madness would still reign supreme. He added that with most of the conference TV deals coming up around that five-year mark, there would be real implications. (link)
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey took the stage today at the SEC Basketball Tipoff in Birmingham, Ala. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ Is the league open to a 24-team College Football Playoff? “I think I've always communicated that we've never said no, that that won't happen, that won't be a point of support. … I think there's an openness to playoff expansion on our part. … Attitudes change over time, and perspectives change. We'll see where that leads us from a final decision standpoint. But going through and trying to remember metrics and analytics and predictives that may have come from that is probably incredibly boring, and I'd be mostly wrong. I think in general, we have achieved some of the progress we've expected on scheduling commitments. We'll see if we can finalize those across the nation. We'll go from there, make some final decisions probably sooner rather than later is my expectation.”
➤ What are his thoughts on the now-tabled proposal for a one-year sit-out period for intra-conference transfers? “I don't know that it will come back up. Those considerations are generated from dialogue with our membership. … We gathered our athletic directors in mid-September to look even more deeply at the issues, resulted in the tabling, which means it's not right now. We'll see what happens with the Congressional activity. We also have some court decisions on transfer issues that have existed that have to be considered. If you will, I'm agnostic on whether or not it comes back. I think tabling was the right action at this point.”
➤ What does he want to see from LSU to feel better about their standing in the conference and could the legal issues between the school and league potentially damage the relationship for the foreseeable future? “Well, I'd like to not be in court. But as I said, those legal filings speak for themselves. … Certainly concerned. We've had disagreements among our membership over time. So this is year 12 for me. I know that there's also a commitment to the league and a commitment to its members. We have to work through some of these difficulties.” (link)
The Ohio Supreme Court has ordered briefing on the impact of Gov. Mike DeWine's executive order on the Borovicanin v. NCAA five-for-five eligibility case. Boise State Assoc. Professor Sam Ehrlich adds: “In the meantime, it has stayed the decision of the Ohio Court of Appeals -- restoring the lower court's injunction and making those players eligible.” (link)
Awful Announcing’s Jon Loesche examines ESPN’s “tangled ties” to the Protect College Sports Act, noting Disney has lobbied Congress and network executives and on-air personalities have actively engaged with advocacy efforts surrounding the legislation, while providing viewers with limited disclosure of the efforts. College Sports Council Vice Chair/New York Yankees President Randy Levine confirmed ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro and Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks personally expressed concerns to him about protecting their existing television contracts. Emails also place Pitaro on the invitation list for an August meeting organized through Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair/primary Savings College Sports (SCS) backer Cody Campbell’s office. SCS ran political advertisements featuring College GameDay analyst Nick Saban across ESPN platforms, but provided no identified on-air disclosure of its corporate lobbying or personnel involvement. The bill was eventually updated in mid-September to include Section 203 protections, ensuring conferences and schools couldn’t contribute media rights to a collective pool if they are “not legally entitled to contribute by reason of an existing contract, including an amendment to such contract” that restricts the transfer or licensing of those rights. USC is leaning heavily on a new ally in its bid to reach this year’s College Football Playoff by utilizing the rehabilitation and recovery infrastructure inside its new $225M, 163K-square-foot Bloom Football Performance Center to support its student-athletes during the first bye week of the season. Opened in August as a replacement for the 14-year-old John McKay Center, the complex features nap pods, sensory deprivation tanks, infrared therapy beds, leather zero-gravity chairs and a 5,406-square-foot active rehabilitation space designed to mimic what’s used in the NFL and Major League Baseball. Per the California Post’s Ben Bolch, the facility has helped players streamline their schedules and improve efficiency. Trojans’ HC Lincoln Riley: “Now you’re conserving time that you can put into film study, you can put into sleep, you can put into your school. Like, it all adds up one way or another, either in a good way or a bad way, and Bloom kind of helps it all add up in a good way.” (link)
Extra Points’ Matt Brown weighs in on yesterday’s Insider Gaming report that highlighted concerns over the long-term viability of the EA Sports College Football series. “To the best of my knowledge, EA is contractually obligated to produce at least one more game under their current licensing agreement with schools. … It would make sense to me that some EA employees are worried that, under new ownership (and new debt obligations), the company will elect to support a smaller number of titles moving forward, and that growing post-release revenue will be even more important. … I don't doubt that some EA employees told [report author Mike Straw] they're worried about licensing costs, and my understanding is that ‘just under $20M’ is an undercount of EA's actual athlete licensing spend costs. But I'd be very skeptical of any claims that the licensing costs are too much for the game to be viable. … Based on what I know now, I would be very surprised if the series was not extended beyond the current licensing agreement. CFB has value to the new ownership group beyond pure profits, after all.” (link)
