“AI can give business judgment a much stronger and more independent evidence base, one that can absorb signals from across and beyond the enterprise, detect when assumptions are no longer holding and bring a different point of view while there is still time to change the outcome. That is the foundation for the new finance, and what I find most compelling.”

Jatin Dalal

CollegeAD reports Louisiana has now partnered with Renaissance Search & Consulting for its hire of a new Athletics CEO. The new timeline for the search is to have a leader in place by the end of the calendar year. (link); Here’s the job posting. (link); Further, the D1.dossier for Louisiana has been prepared and will save you hours in your research and prep to lead the Ragin’ Cajuns. (link)

Conflicting reports from prominent local media have clouded the internal reporting structure of Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek, according to Best of Arkansas Sports' Andrew Hutchinson and Evan Demirel. Pig Trail Nation’s Mike Irwin noted that while Yurachek technically reports to Chancellor Charles Robinson, the AD bypasses the chancellor to communicate directly with UA Board of Trustees Chairman Randy Lawson. A recent FOIA request uncovered a text exchange showing Robinson questioning Yurachek about the athletic department's attempt to hire an outside public relations firm. Irwin reported the administration abandoned the PR strategy, but columnist Wally Hall claims the Razorback Foundation finalized the agreement and spent $60K on the effort. Hall ultimately views Yurachek’s future as hinging on whether Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders reappoints Lawson to the board in March, while Irwin anticipates a leadership transition before the end of the year, reporting that SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey asked the board to delay any termination until Yurachek concludes his College Football Playoff committee duties in December. Samford AD/Men’s Basketball Committee Chair Martin Newton chats with SoCon Assoc. Commissioner for Brand Strategy and Broadcast Dave Friedman about nuances of the selection process with an expanded field…

➤ Managing the compressed timeline of tournament expansion: "You get to those last couple of days during the selection process where you're choosing those last teams in and it was always difficult at 68. And now that we're moving to 76, you're adding eight more teams. We're going to have our work cut out for us ... literally getting the brackets done, getting them to CBS and Turner in time for the show as well as flights, getting teams where they need to be in the opening rounds."

➤ Separating close teams from one another: "It goes back to who the committee feels are the best teams, not the most deserving teams, but who are the best teams. And I think we'll stick to that principle and procedure. ... There are no bylaws or anything that says that you have to have a winning record or 20 wins. Our focus is to pick the best at-large teams."

➤ Discerning player availability from NCAA eligibility: "Our job is not to determine who's eligible, who's not eligible. Our job is to determine are they available for games and what games were they available for and how did that team do during the games that they were available for. … Each one of these conferences now … is doing some type of player availability throughout the week before games. And so we will ask that, we will go through that." (link)

In an interview with the Navigating Sports Business podcast, Rutgers AD Keli Zinn talks about utilizing benchmarking to establish concrete performance expectations for head coaches: "If we are investing in your roster and facilities and operations and salaries at ninth in the league, you should perform at ninth in the league. ... If all of those things put you ninth in the league and you're performing 14th, there's a problem there." (link)

Missouri State AD Patrick Ransdell sits down with The Starting Lineup to chat about the transition to Conference USA, the department's ongoing facility upgrades and more…

➤ "Ultimately I am a believer that we need to in some way, shape, or form collectively bargain. Because I think that's just the best way to do it. The pros have proven that. ... I think it would be really difficult to collectively bargain at the individual campus levels and state levels. I think it probably needs to be done through maybe a conference office. … If this thing (the PCSA) can't get through Congress, then I think you're going to see conferences kind of take the bull by the horn and kind of do some self-regulation and we’ll see how that goes.”

➤ Financial realities of midweek television windows: "If we're getting let’s call it $2M, $3M a year from Conference USA and we said, 'All right, we're not going to do weekday with CUSA anymore and so we’re not going to play in October on the midweeks,’ we're not going to generate $2M or $3M more in ticket revenue. So, there is no doubt the money is worth it on that side of things. … The money’s the money, and right now if I can find a dollar, I’m going to spend it about eight different ways.” (link)

La Salle AD Jarett Gerald discusses what accomplishments he’d like to see in his first year on the job and notes the Explorers will launch a capital campaign on Friday, November 6. “A lot of that is going to be investing in our students, investing in our people, and one of those big things will be investing in our student spaces. There’s two things – obviously, you really want basketball to be competitive at a high level, and I think we have a chance to do that. But the other side of that is I want to be able to invest in some of our spaces. … I talk about our women’s soccer team being third in the A-10 and some of the things that our peers have that we don’t have and some of our student spaces – whether it’s locker rooms, whether it’s a wellness center for all of our students – those are the things that I really think if we invest in those, it just builds what we’re doing at La Salle and makes people more excited about being there.” (link)

For the first time ever, the Heisman Trophy Trust is partnering with REVELxp to sell general public ticket and hospitality packages to its December 11-13 Heisman weekend in New York City, per USA Today’s John Brice. The get-in price for any of the three offered packages – Legacy, Icon and Bronze – starts at $8,500 and scales up to the top-tier Legacy option, which includes Times Square hotel accommodations, a theater box for Friday's Heisman Live event, a photo opportunity with the four finalists and a Sunday social event, among other amenities. Heisman Trust CEO Jeff Price created the public access model after observing empty tables at last year’s weekend event and to support the Trust's charitable mission. Price: “We can do all of those things programmatically that we’ve done, but you can also then get an intimate fireside conversation with the four finalists and really have a celebration of college football and the Heisman finalists, along with the amazing winners that we have and the impact that we drive.” (link)

Florida-Georgia led the college football weekend with 7.1M viewers on ABC, according to The Athletic's Stewart Mandel, who notes Ohio State-USC followed closely behind, drawing 6.6M viewers on NBC. Indiana's matchup against Minnesota pulled 4.9M viewers on CBS, edging out Miami (FL)-North Carolina's 4.6M audience on ABC, the network which also captured 4M viewers for Notre Dame-Navy. Other notable broadcasts included Wisconsin-Iowa on Fox (3.3M), Arizona-Texas Tech on ESPN (2.5M), Mississippi State-Texas on ESPN (2.1M), and Arizona State-BYU on Fox (2.1M). (link)

Wake Forest has launched a dedicated website to promote the Heisman candidacy of QB Gio Lopez. Have a look. (link)

North Carolina paid outside law firms more than $914K to investigate workplace culture and conduct allegations involving former football GM Michael Lombardi and DC Steve Belichick, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit. Public records show Barnes & Thornburg collected $821K after billing 1,034 hours at a rate of $990 per hour for lead counsel Nate Huff, while K&L Gates received $86.5K for work dating to July 9—weeks before the university publicly disclosed the inquiry. Williams, Mullen Clark & Dubin also received $6.7K for employment-law and litigation advice. (link)

Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders has resolved a federal fraud and copyright lawsuit filed by graphic designer Alan Tipp over the ownership and branding rights to the "Prime" logos, according to USA Today's Brent Schrotenboer. The dispute centered on Tipp’s allegations that Sanders and SMAC Entertainment representative Sam Morini fraudulently induced him into signing an August 2011 work-for-hire agreement relinquishing his logo rights in exchange for unfulfilled career promises—including marketing opportunities with Nike, brand consulting for Blenders Eyewear, and personal branding sessions with Colorado student-athletes. Tipp, who sought to void the 2011 agreement and demanded compensation after the Blenders sunglasses line generated more than $5M in its initial three-day launch, claimed he received no financial compensation while Sanders capitalized on the intellectual property across apparel and commercial partnerships. Sanders and his legal team contested the claims in federal court in Nebraska, arguing Under Armour and other partners operated under established trademark rights without prior objection before the parties filed a joint stipulation to dismiss the case. (link)

Another settlement as USC is done with the lawsuit brought by former men’s basketball student-athlete Chad Baker-Mazara over unpaid NIL compensation and damages stemming from his dismissal following a late-season loss to Nebraska last year, according to The Athletic’s CJ Moore. The complaint alleged the university dismissed Baker-Mazara when postseason qualification appeared unlikely, after which the Trojans' collective terminated his contract under a morals clause for unspecified conduct that could adversely affect the program. The university released a statement closing the matter: “USC is pleased to resolve this matter and will have no further comment.” (link)

Democrats capturing House and Senate majorities during Tuesday's midterm elections have reduced the odds the Protect College Sports Act passes during the lame-duck Congressional session to between 5% and 10%, according to Colorado State FAR/Sacred Cow BBQ publisher Kyle Saunders. More…

➤ Projections showing House Democrats securing at least 258 seats leave incoming leadership with minimal incentive to advance the Senate-passed bill or accept a compromise before January, when incoming committee chairs such as Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ), who previously labeled the 2025 SCORE Act “nothing more than a major giveaway” to the NCAA and the conferences, take control of markups.

➤ Outgoing House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) faces internal math challenges given a 218-member majority, compounded by at least 21 House Republicans who formally requested alterations to the bill's 20-member conference cap and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise's (R-LA) push to add an explicit ban on classifying student-athletes as employees. Amending the text would force a return to the Senate, where staff warned the legislation was “a final product” and threatened counter-amendments capping coach, AD and president salaries if conference realignment restrictions were altered.

➤ More Saunders: "When Congress can’t act collectively, the people who need rules tend to write their own, and the courts write the rest. ... So if the bill dies on January 3, college sports absolutely still gets governed in 2027. Conference commissioners, a settlement judge, state courts and a few governors will do it, one rule and one injunction at a time, and the next Congress starts over with House committees led by people who called the last version 'a giveaway.'" (link)

More takeaways following last night’s election results…

➤ Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has told staff he won’t run for House GOP leader, per Colorado State FAR/Sacred Cow BBQ publisher Kyle Saunders, who notes “the Speaker who’d have to whip the college sports bill in the lame duck has no leadership future to whip for. And its House sponsor, Michael Baumgartner (R-WA), is in a race too close to call.” (link)

➤ Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman observes it’s “going to be REALLY hard for House Republican leadership to get people back to Washington for the lame duck.” (link)

➤ In the aftermath of Texas’ election of Democrat Gina Hinojosa to replace current Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer points out that higher ed board regents are appointed by the state’s governor. Texas’ Kevin Eltife, Texas A&M’s Robert Albritton and Texas Tech’s Cody Campbell, all board chairmen heavily involved in college athletics, have terms that end in February 2027. (link)

Texas Tech has tabled plans to launch a new for-profit collective designed to secure above-the-cap NIL deals for student-athletes across its athletic programs, per the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal's Don Williams. When the subject was discussed back in the spring, Red Raiders AD Kirby Hocutt talked openly about the need to develop more above-the-cap revenue, while noting such a collective would have to be for-profit, with a product for sale to the general public that could engage student-athletes through NIL deals that would pass muster with the College Sports Commission. Hocutt: “I think it was just ultimately as you looked at the totality of the landscape and exactly what deliverables there would have to be with a collective, it just didn't fit at this particular time for Texas Tech athletics. … I wouldn't say in the future we've taken it off the table, but it's not been something we've activated on since we talked about it last spring." (link)

Texas AD Chris Del Conte joined host John Mitchell on the Learning From Experts podcast to discuss department standards and more. Here are some takeaways…

➤ Establishing a national program standard: "The standard is that we have a top-five athletic program. Every program is funded [as a] top-five program in the country. There's no stair-stepping at Texas. Every single student-athlete at the University of Texas is on a full ride starting this coming year. If we fund, we support, and we give you all the tools necessary, that's our expectation. It doesn’t happen every year. It’s called sport, but that's our expectations and our goals. We know that we may fall short and some years we may win it, but you’ve got to have a standard to shoot for."

➤ Cultivating an internal David mentality within a Goliath brand: "In society, if you believe in David and Goliath, Texas is never going to be David. You're always going to be Goliath, but you’ve got to have David principles in your core to make sure that you are successful. If you always think you're Goliath and your ego is there, someone's going to take you down. I think our coaches and student-athletes understand that yes, we're going to get their best shot, but we have the fortitude, the understanding, the leadership, the coaching in that mix that allows them to compete at the highest level. Outside of our walls, you’re never David." (link)

Louisville AD Josh Heird addressed the rising expectations surrounding the Cards’ football program after Football HC Jeff Brohm received an eight-year, $64M contract extension back in April. “The amount of pressure to win now has ratcheted up so significantly because the investment level has increased so significantly. And that’s what’s happened here.” Estimates published by The Athletic place the 2026 UofL football roster budget between $22M and $25M, ranking somewhere between 35th to 40th nationally. Heird to WDRB’s Eric Crawford: “Yes, there is a sense of urgency, and I’m not saying there wasn’t one before, but that pressure gets even greater when that investment level is at certain levels. And I can promise you, there’s other coaches on this campus that feel that same pressure.” (link)

UMass inks an eight-year deal making Under Armour the official outfitter and supplier of uniforms, apparel, footwear and accessories for all 21 varsity sport programs and athletics staff, starting July 1, 2027. (link)

Arizona’s men's and women’s basketball jersey patch sponsorship deal with Carvana is reportedly worth a total of $12.75M over four seasons, per Tucson.com’s Bruce Pascoe, who notes UA is set to receive $3M this season and next, $3.25M in 2028-29 and $3.5M in 2029-30. The Wildcats are now expected to reap about $1M as its share of the Big 12's Monster Energy deal, an average of about $1.85M from Alkeme for naming rights to McKale Center and an average value of $3.19M over the next four seasons from the Carvana deal. (link)

VCU is continuing its collaboration with VCU Health, reaffirming the brand as the official healthcare partner of Rams Athletics. In addition, the academic medical and health system will become the school’s first jersey patch partner for all varsity programs and the initial partner with on-court logos inside the Stuart C. Siegel Center, beginning this fall. (link)

CBS Sports’ David Cobb reports that while non-conference rematches will still be avoided in the NCAA Tournament Opening and First Rounds, with expansion to 76 teams, language around avoiding them in the Second Round is no longer part of official NCAA guidance. (link)

A Celebration of Life for college athletics leader Doug Woolard will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2026, from 2-4 p.m., at the Clearwater Beach Sheraton Resort on Sand Key in Clearwater Beach, Fla. (link)

Chalk North Dakota State’s successful “NDSU Giving Day,” that brought in just over $500K in 24 hours from 261 donors, to the FBS/Mountain West moves and to a more accepting attitude of NIL and the Green and Gold Fund, per InForum’s Jeff Kolpack. NDSU Deputy AD Derrick Lang: “I absolutely do believe that. … Hopefully we’ve done a better job of the messaging on how those dollars are being used. Our kids are earning those opportunities through playing time, doing the right thing in the classroom, doing the right thing in the community so it was new for us too. We have a long way to go but we’re seeing people come around on it.” If NDSU’s move to FBS required its fan base to help pay for it, it appears that is happening as the giving day success comes on the heels of a “701 Day” that raised over $10.1M in early August, with over $29M having been collected toward a $50M “Climb the Mountain” campaign goal. (link)

The idea behind college sports memorabilia startup CollectU was born out of the scheduled demolition of Northwestern’s old Ryan Field, per SBJ’s Matt Fortuna. In the facility to secure some small artifacts for the Ryan family, founder Jay Sharman asked a worker on-site what would happen to everything in the stadium. When told it was getting bulldozed, he asked if he could take it. “I don’t see why not,” the worker told him. CollectU launched three months later in partnership with former TrueNU collective leader Jacob Schmidt. The company now has 10 school clients, a full-time staff, a retail store with plans for more, heavyweight investors and advisors that include former Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany. “This is university-owned property that is either going to be in a dump or in a warehouse, and it’s monetizing that in an organized way to add value at a time when everybody’s seeking added value. So I think it’s a good, simple concept where execution is really important, and I think they have demonstrated the ability to execute.” (link)

It’s Personnel…
➤ Memphis highlights the reclassification of several members of the Tigers' executive leadership team. Senior Deputy AD Tim Duncan has added the role of COO; Deputy AD/CRO Cooper Jones has expanded his position to include the title of AVP for Athletics Advancement; Deputy AD for Regulatory Affairs Katherine Sulentic has added the duty of Assoc. General Counsel; and Executive Assoc. AD for Academic Services and Student-Athlete Welfare Ted White has been elevated to Deputy AD for Student-Athlete Welfare. (link)
