“This is one of the last sleeping giants in college athletics. I think we've got one of the biggest, best brands. ... I would argue our ceiling and trying to get back to where historically we've experienced is incredibly high.”

LSU has locked its football roster without adding former NFL players Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris. Yahoo’s Teddy Ricketson notes that “at this time, it has not been reported whether Thursday's scheduled meeting to ‘decide whether to terminate [LSU] as an SEC member institution’ has been canceled or if it will still be held.” In light of the news, Louisiana plaintiffs attorney Ryan Downton says "players are reviewing legal options." Tigers HC Lane Kiffin: "That wasn't easy. As much as I feel for the players, and I believe that you fight for what you believe in, and I believe that, you know, these kids have an opportunity to play, just like all of the other kids around the country that are winning court cases and being put on rosters. But at the same time, I'm the head coach at LSU and I had to make a decision that is for the big picture of LSU and the LSU football program, with the uncertainties of what potentially could've come by adding them to the roster." (link, link)

Meanwhile, SEC presidents and chancellors are still scheduled to vote Thursday on whether to expel LSU from the conference, according to Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger. As noted, the Tigers locked their 105-man football roster late Tuesday without adding the pro players, and Dellenger asks: “But will the SEC really do it? Will the SEC kick out of the league, in the middle of football season, one of its biggest brands in the sport? Will the league boot a football program that's won three national championships since 2003, a baseball team that claimed titles in two of the last four seasons, and women's basketball and gymnastics teams that won it all in 2023 and 2024, respectively? In all, the university has claimed 53 team national titles. Surely, the conference would not hit the eject button on this, right?” One conference administrator confirms to Dellenger that “this is real.” An SEC president adds: “It is time for everyone to follow SEC rules.” Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) criticized the conference, noting: "The SEC is threatening LSU while the same conference allows athletes who spent YEARS competing professionally in foreign leagues to play immediately." NCAA Secretary-Rules Editor Matt Young is sending the following message to members regarding official game timing protocol: “Recognizing that replay technology and available broadcast resources may vary among institutions, conferences, and game sites, it is necessary to establish a standard timing protocol that ensures consistency in the administration of all college football games. The official time for all college football games is the time displayed on the in-stadium game clock. If the stadium clock becomes inoperable, the official time will be maintained on the field by a designated game official. When a replay review requires time to be restored or otherwise adjusted, the replay official's decision will be based on the embedded game clock contained within the program feed. If the broadcaster is unable to provide an embedded game clock, the replay official will use the game-clock graphic displayed as part of the broadcast feed. Moving forward, this timing protocol should be followed consistently at all institutions and game sites. (link)

The Big Ten released a statement in regards to the Michigan-Western Michigan ending: “The Big Ten stands by the statement released following the conclusion of the Western Michigan at Michigan game and the determination made by the replay officials. We will have no further comment on the matter.” (link)

Politico reporter Jacob Wendler via X: “[New York] Yankees President Randy Levine tells me he's feeling ‘good’ about the upcoming floor vote for [Protect College Sports Act], but he's ‘not overconfident’: ‘The game's not over till the scoreboard rings. The bill's not perfect,’ adding that it addresses around 80% of his concerns, but he says ‘it's a lot better than where we are.’ On the bill's critics: ‘There are reasons that people want to kill this bill for sure, and they're using excuses. There are people on the right who continue to try and muddle the water, saying that this bill will, in effect, overrule state laws that prohibit men from playing in women's sports, and that's just not true.’” (link)

Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell's Saving College Sports group is expanding its pro-Protect College Sports Act with a $1M ad buy featuring Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders, per Sportico’s Jacob Wendler, who shares an exclusive look at the video spot. (link

Campbell President Dr. William Downs sat down with CSA Search and Consulting President Drew Turner to discuss the launch of the university's national search for its next AD, aligning athletics with the school’s strategic plan, competing in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) and more. Here’s what you need to know…

Candidate experience profiles: "I'd like to see that experience at our level, at a peer institution or an aspirant peer institution. I think somebody who has not had that experience might get eaten alive. And then somebody on the other end of the spectrum, somebody who comes in from a P4, who's been a number two or a number three who might come to a place like Campbell with perhaps a savior complex and say, 'look, you guys don't have the resources.' And so there's instant frustration. We want to avoid that frustration. So. I think peers and aspirant peers with some experience would be a perfect match.”

"The [AD], the [VP for Athletics] at Campbell University will be a member of my cabinet, the leadership team. Athletics touches everything at our university. And even if it doesn't touch it, that person is part of the team and is part of our decision-making process. No silos, no islands, no us versus them. I need somebody who is the consummate team player. I need accountability. I need transparency. I need a great communicator. … We have a voracious appetite for winning, just like everybody else, a voracious appetite for winning, but let's make it fun.”

“We have 550 student-athletes right now. We have not fully maxed out our NCAA rosters, so there's still some room to grow under those caps. More importantly, successful athletic programs can excite non-athletes to choose your school. … We are in the NIL space. We know to be competitive, you have to be. ... In my view, we're looking to build successful athletic programs and we're not just looking to build temporary shells for rosters that attract mercenary student-athletes who chase a bag and leave after a single season.” (link)

Syracuse AD Bryan Blair joined host Dr. Rob Clark on the Competitive Kindness podcast to discuss leading a legacy brand, balancing accountability with authentic relationship building, the importance of decisive leadership and more. D1.takeaways…

On restoring Syracuse Athletics' national prominence: "This is one of the last sleeping giants in college athletics. I think we've got one of the biggest, best brands. ... I would argue our ceiling and trying to get back to where historically we've experienced is incredibly high. We've been to and won national championships. I would say we're a basketball blue blood, but we're a basketball blue blood that hasn't made the tournament in five years if we're being realistic about where we sit. ... I'm just trying to get [people] to rethink and reimagine those feelings and memories you already had and say, 'hey, how do we do that but on a consistent basis?'"

JMA Wireless Dome as a competitive advantage: "The dome is one of the, I called it the eighth wonder of the world earlier today. I mean, you can have 35K for a college basketball game. Nobody in the country is doing that on a regular basis. And then you flip that same atmosphere, host nation-leading lacrosse on both the men's and women's side, and then you get 45K, 50K for a football game and it's an indoor environment. ... You combine all of those factors with being in central New York, four hours away from New York City, which is our largest alumni base, the media and business capital of the world, all of that combined just creates a platform that allows us to do something really unique."

Maintaining authenticity amidst the transactional nature of modern college athletics: "To coach and recruit for certain people, you got to pour your whole heart in that relationship. You got to give that young person everything you got. But when you have that happen and then they up and leave you at the end of the year for a couple of dollars, you can become really jaded or guarded. ... To get that job or to coach that student-athlete or lead in that way, you got to be authentic and you got to be all in or self-feeling or you'll never be the best version of yourself.” (link)

Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard and Tracks to Success podcast host Kraig Kann discuss leveraging marquee matchups to drive early season ticket growth: "I remember when we said for the Iowa game, you couldn't go to the Iowa game unless you bought a season ticket. There would be no single game sales and people initially had a meltdown like no one's going to be at that game. Well, we sold it out and so we went from in our first year in 2005, we had 22K season ticket holders. We now have 47K." More from Pollard, including how he’s gaining commercial real estate experience through the Cy-Town project: "I've learned so much from Cy-Town that's not a normal athletic director's responsibility. It is a university project, but the president gave it to the athletics director to lead and manage and run because of our entrepreneurial tendencies in college athletics. And so I've learned so much about development and third-party transactions, dealing with developers, contractors, real estate." (link)

The DI Men’s Ice Hockey Committee is evaluating a proposal from the Big Ten to increase the roster limit under the House settlement from 26 to 28 student-athletes. The NCAA Ice Hockey Rules Subcommittee decided to not approve a rule change that would change the rules around commercial trademarks or logos on uniforms or equipment, which will be under review by the DI Cabinet. Effective on September 1, Michigan Sport Administrator Josh Richelew will chair the Men’s Hockey Oversight Committee and Holy Cross HC Bill Riga will serve as vice chair. (link)

West Virginia has leveraged a $5M investment in baseball to construct a biomechanics performance center that not only helped propel the program to its first College World Series berth in 2026, it’s also drawn interest from MLB stars like Paul Skenes, James Wood, and Trey Lipscomb. The facility features doppler radars, motion-tracking cameras, and force plates to measure kinetic load, joint pressure, and release mechanics during pitches and swings. Analysts use those metrics to recommend physical adjustments that redirect energy away from vulnerable joints, increasing velocity while mitigating injury risks like Tommy John surgery. Mountaineers HC Steve Sabins pitched the lab as both a marketing tool and an academic partnership, and lead biochemist Courtney Semkewyc and School of Sport Sciences Director Dana Voelker structured the center so undergraduate students can analyze the data to optimize player mechanics and lower injury risks. Sabins explained how processing data sets the facility apart from rival programs: "Everyone can present data; not nearly as many people can tell you what it means. And we translate it for players better than anyone else. We have mad scientists." (link)

Sportico reports that Kalshi removed betting markets tied to athlete injury durations from its app on Tuesday. The prediction market company’s federal regulator, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), asked it to do so. “Kalshi has not said how it will resolve the injury markets it took down from its app that were already live. Precedent suggests the markets will pay out based on ‘fair market value,’ meaning the latest odds before the markets disappeared, though the company did not confirm this when Sportico reached out.” (link)

The SEC has filed an amendment to its federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama against LSU, school officials and Football HC Lane Kiffin, seeking the authority to expel the Tigers from the league, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Dan Murphy and Mark Schlabach, who note the “SEC is not expected to take such action, but the filing indicates the seriousness of the league as it attempts to affirm the legal right to enforce its own rules.” The league also filed a TRO in federal court seeking similar authority. (link); Here’s what you need to know…

From the amended SEC complaint: “In light of the recalcitrance, lack of institutional control, and serious harm caused by the statements and conduct of LSU, the 15 SEC CEOs (other than LSU) have informally told the Commissioner (and President [Donde] Plowman has directed the Commissioner) to issue a notice of the Special Meeting to be conducted on September 10, 2026, to consider the termination of LSU’s membership in the SEC, whether LSU renounces its intention to roster and play professional players on its football team, or not." Thamel adds: “This is not expected, but the SEC is making clear they have the right.” (link, link)

On the TRO, Thamel: “[The filing] says they cannot otherwise undermine ‘any decision by the Conference’s CEOs to terminate LSU’s membership in the Conference, except for any challenge or counterclaim brought solely in this action.” Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger adds: “A federal judge will hear the SEC's arguments for a temporary restraining order against LSU at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The judge granting such a request may pave the way for the league's expulsion vote scheduled for Thursday.” (link, link, link)

Fox Sports’ Ben Portnoy provides the specific language from the amended complaint, clarifying essentially how a school could potentially be voted out of the league. “Membership of a member may be terminated involuntarily at a meeting of the Chief Executive Officers. A vote of at least two-thirds of all the Chief Executive Officers is required to terminate membership. Any motion to terminate membership shall specify the effective date of the proposed termination.” (link)

The league has issued a statement on the amended complaint that reads in part: “The SEC and its member universities have the right to establish, through agreed-upon governance procedures, the rules under which they voluntarily compete and to expect those rules to be followed. A commitment to those rules, and to the core principles of the Southeastern Conference, is an essential element of SEC membership. Today's filing is necessary to defend that right and preserve the Conference's ability to govern competition among its members.” (link)

Dellenger reports that If SEC presidents were to vote to expel LSU, it’s unclear when such a decision would take effect. “There are varying answers across the league as this is unprecedented. If the expulsion is immediate, says one, ‘the LSU-Ole Miss game would be a non-conference game if it is still played.’ Not only that, but the expulsion obviously impacts a variety of other sports beyond football. For instance, this month, LSU is scheduled to play several SEC soccer and volleyball matches. … The presidents need 11 supportive votes from the 16 schools to expel a member. For more than a week now - since that Aug. 30 gathering - the belief is that the presidents have the necessary votes to place LSU on probation at the very least, if not fully booting the university.” (link, link)

College Football Playoff leaders have triggered the 30-day negotiating window with ESPN as the CFP continues to explore the value of a 24-team playoff, per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, who adds: “ESPN now has 30 days to present an offer. CFP executives can either accept, or reject and move to the open market. The move must come with an increase in revenue - at least $250M - to compensate for the cancellation of the four conference championship games.” ESPN Senior Writer Heather Dinich: “If the CFP opens the window, it doesn’t guarantee a 24-team field next season, but it begins a discussion with the sole rights holder to determine what the value of it would be.” (link, link)

The MAC has formally submitted appeals to the FBS Oversight Committee and the College Football Playoff, requesting both bodies recognize Western Michigan as the actual winner of Saturday night’s game against Michigan for the purposes of rankings, selections and to “take such other corrective action as may be within their authority.” Here’s what key leaders had to say…

MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher: “After further study and investigation, it is now evident that replay protocol was not properly followed in determining whether time remained on the game clock at the conclusion of the Western Michigan vs. Michigan football game. The established replay protocol requires that the game clock displayed on the program feed be used in determining whether time remained. Instead, the Big Ten Conference replay crew relied upon the clock feed embedded within its replay system. As a result, one second was placed back on the game clock and an additional play was awarded. This was not a judgment regarding the proper amount of time to place on the clock. It was an error in the application of the established replay protocol governing this specific end-of-game timing situation. Had the protocol been properly followed and the program-feed clock been used, no additional play would have been awarded, and Western Michigan would have won the game, 12-7.”

WMU President Russ Kavalhuna: “The support we have received from across the country for [HC Lance] Taylor and our Broncos, for their character and their sportsmanship, has been overwhelming, and we are grateful for it. Some have read our actions as weak. However, supporting student-athletes and their growth during a time of adversity is strength. Being bitter doesn’t make you better and this should not be mistaken for weakness or agreement. We can show respect for the game while also asking serious questions; I’ve done both, and I’ll keep doing both. Our job at Western Michigan is to play the game and help our students grow. It’s the job of the conferences and the NCAA to enforce the rules. Our Broncos will continue to take the field against any opponent.” (link

Who is “Miss Kathy?” Memphis AD Ed Scott calls her “a unicorn” and Tigers Football HC Charles Huff awarded her his game ball after UM’s recent win over UNLV, a moment from a raucous postgame locker room celebration immortalized in a viral video. ESPN College GameDay analyst Pat McAfee even gave her a shutout on the August 31 episode of the show. Miss Kathy is Deputy AD for Regulatory Affairs/SWA Kathy Sulentic, who’s been “thrust into the spotlight, hers one of many wagons hitched to Memphis football’s fast-rising star.” Here’s more on Sulentic…

As football administrator, Sulentic oversees the day-to-day operation of the program on behalf of Scott. Huff calls her “the conduit” between him and the athletic department’s administration, adding that there hasn’t been a single fire Sulentic hasn’t been able to help him extinguish.

Explaining his reasoning for presenting Sulentic with a game ball, Huff said her response every time he calls, no matter how upset he is, has been, “'Coach, I’m on it.'" Huff adds: “She’s a godsend. She’s got the right demeanor. She understands football. She understands a locker room environment. She understands these kids.”

Sulentic says she tries her best not to concern herself with the significance of her status, instead preferring to focus on the work. “I feel like the best advertisement for women in sports is to just go out and do your job and kick ass. And then, when there are women around who need a hand up, you grab it and help them up.” More. (link)

New Mexico State is nearing a 10-year, $13M naming rights agreement with White Sands Federal Credit Union to rename the Pan American Center, the home of the Aggies’ men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs, as the White Sands FCU Arena at the Pan Am Center. The deal is expected to be formally approved at today’s New Mexico State Board of Regents meeting. (link)

New North Carolina A&T AD Katreshia Louis-Verrett has wasted little time getting acquainted with “modern Aggie lingo” since starting her new role on September 1, per The A&T Register’s Xavier Burton, who notes the program has often rallied around the motto “foot on the gas” over recent years. Louis-Verrett: “I am a Southern girl with a little bit of spice, and a little bit of kick, and a little bit of speed. That doesn’t change no matter where I am. We have our foot on the gas. And we’re constantly pushing and pursuing every avenue.” Chancellor James R. Martin II: “I don’t think there are many people that are better at understanding the landscape of modern college athletics. We’re in the people business, and she’s great at relating to people and inspiring them. There’s no doubt we’re in the best possible hands to have the best future for a vision that is unique for A&T.” Coming back to Aggieland after a previous stint as an Assoc. AD, Louis-Verrett returns with the aim of revitalizing the university's football and basketball programs. “Let’s let the work begin.” (link)

Colorado football’s upcoming home opener against Weber State will mark the debut of several fan-friendly gameday amenities, per the Daily Camera’s Pat Rooney, who notes much of the effort has been spurred by Buffs AD Fernando Lovo as he attempts to maximize new angles of revenue generation. Outside Folsom Field, CU will be launching “Ralphie Road,” a new mini-entertainment district that’s set to include food trucks, beverage vendors, games, a DJ providing music and big screen video boards tuned to the day’s college football action. Inside, CU is unveiling “Bands in the Stands,” which will feature various Colorado bands belting out tunes from the sixth floor of the Champions Center, and a “Flatirons 5” deal at concession stands, which includes a hot dog, popcorn, candy, soda and bottled water for only $5. Lovo: “We have to keep our fans engaged. We have to do everything in our power to keep our fans and our donors engaged, because this is a new world of college athletics. …  So (we’re) making sure our fans stay connected and committed to this brand, and then by extension come out and support our programs.” More. Range Sports has created the Hollywood Hardwood Classic, a women’s basketball match-up between Baylor and USC that’s slated to be held at the Los Angeles Clippers’ Intuit Dome on November 20. Per SBJ’s Austin Karp, the Big Ten Network will serve as the media partner, with Range’s plan to launch this year and then build upon surrounding activation opportunities over subsequent years. Range Sports Co-President Will Funk says the company is already exploring other opportunities in the college realm, as NIL has “created more space to create unique matchups and formats.” (link
