“I’m not sure I agree with the 5%, but I certainly don’t think it’s a mistake to come up with the uniform number for agent fees. I do like the fact that there’s a standard of professionalism now that you have to have.”

Drew Rosenhaus

Founder/CEO of Rosenhaus Sports Representation on establishing a uniform industry standard on agents.

As the industry waits to see whether the House takes up the Protect College Sports Act, New York Yankees President and Presidential Roundtable on Fixing College Sports Vice Chair Randy Levine defended the financial provisions and NIL restrictions: "There are no athletes under this bill that are losing any opportunities. ... If it’s as attractive as we think, it will turn out to be the largest investment in women’s and Olympic sports that we’ve ever had." Meanwhile, Rosenhaus Sports Representation Founder/CEO Drew Rosenhaus criticized capping athlete pay without similar limits on coaches or administrators, he supported establishing a uniform industry standard on agents: "I’m not sure I agree with the 5%, but I certainly don’t think it’s a mistake to come up with the uniform number for agent fees. I do like the fact that there’s a standard of professionalism now that you have to have." Athletes.org Co-Founder/Executive Director Brandon Copeland warned the 5% fee cap will leave lower-earning athletes without representation: "What agent is going to say, ‘I’m gonna go represent this athlete making $1,000. Then, I’m gonna get 5% of that.’ It’s just not going to happen." (link)

The Tulsa World’s Barry Tramel reports the four-year contract extension signed by Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg back in April “is not guaranteed, unless OSU reaches some hard-to-achieve financial thresholds.” While Tramel does not detail said financial thresholds, he points to Weiberg’s solid track record of hiring successful head coaches, including the strong start for new football boss Eric Morris: “Weiberg has been superb on the hiring. He’s made four prominent hires, and Morris, wrestling’s David Taylor and women’s basketball’s Jacie Hoyt have been blue-ribbon additions. Men’s basketball’s Steve Lutz? Still to be determined.” And yet, Tramel says there’s still tension in Stillwater: “Rumblings abound that OSU might still relieve Weiberg of his duties, perhaps sooner rather than later. OSU has become quite a dysfunctional place the last couple of years, with heavy regents involvement and palace intrigue from the president’s office and, of course, all the Mike Gundy drama the previous two seasons.” (link)

Texas AD Chris Del Conte weighed in on the celebrations of some football student-athletes during the Longhorns’ matchup against Tennessee: “We can all agree it was a heck of a game and an incredible performance on the field, but I also know we had some major issues to address with inappropriate celebrations from our players. I'm not happy about that. I know none of us are, and it was embarrassing to our proud and widely respected football team, athletics program and university. It certainly raised very warranted concerns that many of you shared with me, drew a lot of attention, and I understand why. Rest assured, Coach Sark has addressed both situations with the players individually and with the team, and he discussed them after the game and again in Monday's press conference. As he said, it is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. The message is clear — the players conduct did not reflect the values of Texas Athletics or our university and cannot happen again.” (link)

More on the arrest of former Auburn player personnel scouting assistant David Rudolph Jenrath from CBS’ Brandon Marcello, Richard Johnson, and Robby Kalland, who note Jenrath used a pseudonym email account named "Don Julio" to send 10 documents to 85 recipient addresses across up to 11 schools, revealing Auburn's organizational chart, scouting department manual, target lists for 2027–2029 recruits, and HC Alex Golesh's home address. Additional notes…

➤ The leaked files outlined internal scouting office rules and the program's grading system, which categorized recruits into distinct evaluation tiers: "no-brainers … no hesitation in taking his commitment regardless of roster spots. All hands on deck recruiting. Little to no questions on traits/character. Will be one of the best players in college football. ... [and] rejects … player not good enough to help us win. Documented off the field issues/concerns. Lacks work ethic, coachability, and/or competitiveness."

➤ Police say one of Auburn's competitors who received the information turned it over to Auburn. Also from the CBS trio: “One source on the receiving end of the email questioned how proprietary the information really was. Jenrath was not a major member of the Auburn front office staff, and multiple sources told CBS Sports he was fired after he was spotted at an Auburn baseball game, even though he told staff he was sick.” (link)

A drop in local media rights values and a shrinking pay TV subscriber base (now at 62M) signal a slowdown for upcoming national sports media rights negotiations, according to JohnWallStreet. More of what you need to know…

➤ Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson says that teams are already getting “$4M, $5M, for deals that used to be worth $50M, ten cents on the dollar literally.” Thompson adds that a select few established sports rights distributors “can afford to pay leagues the large increases they’re going to be seeking the next time around, and those that can are too concerned about what is going on in AI and how much cash they need to hold for that.”

➤ Meanwhile, Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes warns that AI data center investments will restrain tech spending, leaving top-tier entities like the SEC, Big Ten, and NFL positioned to capture remaining value while lower-tier properties face stagnant or declining growth. "You can’t look at the engine that powers the economics of this business and the non-replacement from new bidding entities and say that should be your benchmark. Instead, rights owners should be looking at going up just 80%, which would be considered a failure in the old expectation environment." (link)

NC State and an undetermined number of fans are still awaiting reimbursements from Athlete Advantage four months after the cancellation of a 2026 football season opener against Virginia in Brazil, according to WRAL's Alex Littlehales, who notes Athlete Advantage has yet to deliver a $1.5M cancellation fee to the Wolfpack while simultaneously stalling refunds for fans who purchased travel packages, including one buyer owed $4,945. Representatives attribute the delays to recovering international deposits as a spokesperson for the company tells Littlehales: "We understand the frustration of ticket purchasers who are still waiting for refunds following the cancellation of the NC State–UVA game in Brazil. Ticket purchasers are currently receiving refunds, and we continue to work through the remaining refunds." (link)

ACC VP of Media Partnerships Tyler McBride welcomes the challenge of working to drive media revenue distribution and brand visibility across the league, per SBJ’s Austin Karp, who notes McBride works with media rights consulting firm Octagon to gather and disseminate distribution methodology data to member institutions, ensuring they understand how the models drive conference payouts. He also coordinates game production, talent and ACC Huddle efforts alongside ESPN partners, while evaluating fan consumption trends across digital platforms. “I try to be a resource for our schools and ESPN in kind of making sure not only are we doing everything we can to drive tune-in, but drive crowds to those. … We’re very bullish on ACC Network and our ESPN relationship, and so [I’m] trying to make sure I understand all the different components of the ESPN app or the YouTube TV dynamic and just the different ways that distributors are making things easier for the consumer.” (link)

ABC captured the top three college football viewership windows of the week, led by Texas' matchup against Tennessee with 9.7M viewers, according to The Athletic's Stewart Mandel. ABC's slate also featured Ole Miss-Florida (8.3M) and Texas A&M-LSU (5.7M). Across other networks, NBC drew 4.6M viewers for Oregon-USC, CBS pulled 4.5M for Iowa-Michigan, and Fox posted 3.9M for Northwestern-Indiana along with 3.7M for Illinois-Ohio State. ESPN registered 2.9M for South Carolina-Alabama and 2.6M for Oklahoma-Georgia, while all other broadcasts drew under 1.5M viewers. (link)

D1Baseball’s Mark Etheridge catches up with several coaches, including Mississippi State HC Brian O'Connor, LSU HC Jay Johnson, Kentucky HC Nick Mingione, Texas HC Jim Schlossnagle, and Texas A&M Recruiting Coordinator Nolan Cain, to gauge how they’re navigating the new five-year eligibility window. Most interesting comments…

➤ Johnson on the roster dynamics of managing draft prospects alongside veteran talent: "I think there’s a thought, whether it’s Coach (Mike) Bianco, Coach (Dave) Van Horn, or Coach (Jim) Schlossnagle, constantly talking about really being old to be successful in the league. Like that’s a clear advantage if you have age on your side. I think it is an interesting concept because if you do have the super high-end player right now, you’re losing them after three years."

➤ Mingione on difficult redshirt conversations with players and parents: "Well, we don’t have to have those conversations anymore. And parents and players, like student-athletes, they don’t have to make those decisions. They just know that, ‘Hey, I got this year, and I’m going to do whatever I can to help. And I got five of these.’ So, in some ways, it makes it easier for everybody."

➤ O'Connor on the freedom to play reserve athletes without wasting eligibility: "I’ve had many players before, you’re deciding, do you put them in there for this inning? And sometimes that leads to them becoming an integral player. You see something in a few at-bats or an inning, and all of a sudden, they’re a key player in the back half of the year. And you’ve been so reluctant to do that in the past. And now this does give coaches and players the freedom, just, ‘Okay, just play them. Play who should play.’"

➤ Cain on high school recruiting strategy versus transfer portal evaluation: "I don’t think you can go try to recruit a high school player and be like, ‘Oh, this guy’s going to be here for five years.’ I mean, at our level, if you’re recruiting that player, that’s not a good place to be. ... I want to be recruiting the best players because I want to be fighting the draft out of high school for 90% of my high school class. And then when you’re doing that, you’re expecting them to come in and do what they’re supposed to and be out of here in their junior year." (link)

Feeding athletes doesn’t end when the order is placed. Orderers also have to manage budgets, receipts, reimbursements, and tax-exempt purchasing across trips.

ezCater streamlines the administrative side of team meals by keeping ordering, receipts, reporting, and tax-exempt information in one place. Tax-exempt details can be uploaded once and automatically applied to eligible orders, reducing paperwork and cutting out manual follow-up.

For Jacksonville State, that means less time spent dealing with expense reporting and fewer headaches after the meal is over.

“I don’t like to hold on to paper receipts and get in trouble for not turning them in. ezCater has e-receipts, and having that PDF is way better than a crumpled receipt.”

– Matthew Boone, Head Coach of Track & Field, Jacksonville State University

Over the past three years, Miami (OH) AD David Sayler has spearheaded a donor-backed effort to position the RedHawks as a potential realignment candidate in case the ACC, American or another higher-tier league comes calling, per The Athletic’s Cameron Teague Robinson. Supported by high-profile alumni, including Los Angeles Rams HC Sean McVay, Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol, Enterprise CEO Chrissy Taylor and more, Miami has managed to secure matching university scholarship funds, launched construction on a $281M basketball arena and built an estimated $6M football roster budget. Three years ago, Sayler stood up in an MAC ADs meeting in Cleveland and said: “I told everybody we’re coming and we’re going to elevate the MAC, I hope you all come with. It’s a rising tide lifts all boats theory. I can’t speak for what’s happening in other MAC schools, but we are not just OK. … You can’t be afraid to say what you want to do. Because then you got to live every day waking up thinking, how am I going to get there? I’ve got my name on it now. Like I told the public, this is where we’re going, and now I got to go do it.” (link)

Kansas State AD Gene Taylor sat down with KSNT News’ K Nation to discuss the rise of general manager roles across college athletics, benchmarking for success and more. D1.takeaways…

➤ On the emergence of GMs in college programs: “I think the general manager can come in, be a buffer between the head coach and the athlete and the agent and take that off the coach's plate. … It really takes the pressure off the coach and gives the coach the ability to focus. … Let the GM handle all the negotiations, behind the scenes stuff, and then he'll obviously make the final decision. As head coaches they've realized this is a valuable position for us to have.”

➤ On the football jersey patch partnership with local company, Purple Wave Auction: “As you go deep into the [College Football Playoffs], if you do a more national brand, you could have limitations for postseason because if you do a sponsor that has competition with a CFP playoff sponsor or a NCAA basketball playoff sponsor. So, we kind of focused on a local brand so we could carry it through the playoffs if they wanted [and] if we had that opportunity or postseason.”

➤ Evaluating the department's overall competitive benchmarks: “We always want to be successful. We always want to be in a position where we're at least in the middle of the Big 12. And if you're in the middle of the Big 12, no matter what that sport is, you're probably going to get in the postseason. ... Our conference is so difficult and competitive nationwide that If you're in the upper half of the Big 12, you're going to get in a postseason tournament. And then once you get in the postseason, you can make a deep run. ... If we can do that on a regular basis then I would say we’ve had a successful year.” (link)

The FCS Oversight Committee has joined its FBS peers in asking the DI Cabinet to amend a July Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee proposal to expand scouting restrictions to include FCS football. Originally designed to prevent men’s basketball staff members from attending other DI preseason, regular-season or conference tournament games, with limited exceptions, the revised measure would prohibit FCS football staff from scouting other DI contests in person, including those involving teams that aren’t future opponents. The proposal outlined exceptions for FCS football staff members that include: attending the FCS national championship game and the College Football Playoff national championship game; SWAC and MEAC members being permitted to attend the Celebration Bowl; and SWAC school members being allowed to attend the league’s championship game. The DI Cabinet must review and vote on the amended proposal during its October 6-7 meeting prior to it going into effect. The committee also voted to amend its out-of-season activities proposal to allow on-field practices and skill instruction to begin February 1 instead of January 1, as originally proposed, preventing overlap with football’s notification-of-transfer period and the start of the regular academic term following the conclusion of the season. Mississippi Valley State men's basketball’s grueling stretch of 16 straight road games to christen the upcoming 2026-27 campaign is projected to bring in almost $1M in guarantee payments for the athletic department, per HBCU Gameday’s Wali Pitt, who underscores the challenge the team faces in earning those checks while trying to find its footing under new HC Mike Davis. The season-opening, 14-game non-conference road slate includes match-ups against high-major hosts Oklahoma, Arkansas, Michigan, UConn, Mississippi State, Ohio State, Texas Tech and Baylor. Guaranteed revenue from such contests is critical for the program as a Data Driven HBCU financial analysis indicated MVSU’s athletic department relied on $1.35M in guarantee payouts across all sports in FY25, representing 24.4% of its $5.6M in total revenue. Pitt adds: “National attention may follow Valley’s road results, especially against the biggest names on the schedule. Those scores will tell part of the story. They will not explain why the games were scheduled or what the Delta Devils are trying to build through them. ... The road trip helps fund the program’s present. What Davis and his players make of it will help determine its future." (link)

Highlighting the premium placed on dynamic passing attacks, Collegiate Sports Connect has released a new Coach Intel report benchmarking guaranteed compensation for Division I football wide receivers coaches. The data underscores a massive financial priority for the Power 4, where the median salary hits $462,500 and top-tier assistants command coordinator-level pay between $800K and $850K. Within the autonomous leagues, the SEC leads the charge in investment with a median of $662,500, notably outpacing the Big Ten ($450K) and nearly doubling the Big 12 ($357,500). This top-heavy investment creates a monumental divide across the FBS landscape, as the Power 4 baseline is nearly four times that of their Group of 6 counterparts ($120K median) and dwarfs the FCS median of $61,800. Athletic departments can utilize the full database to review individual contracts, evaluate conference benchmarks, and strategically budget to secure elite perimeter leadership. Take a look at the full report. (link)

Former Auburn football player personnel scouting assistant David Rudolph Jenrath turned himself in to authorities on Monday, after warrants were issued for his arrest on charges of theft of trade secrets and computer tampering, which are both felonies. Per ESPN’s Mark Schlabach and Alex Scarborough, the charges stem from an incident near the university’s football and baseball stadiums – where a "business reported that sensitive information was stolen from the business and distributed to their competitors. The business reported that one of their competitors received the information and turned it over to them." Jenrath allegedly sent material related to AU’s recruiting evaluations to multiple schools, but didn’t include material related to Auburn's NIL, revenue sharing distributions or its playbooks. He’s also accused of "disclosing, using, controlling or taking computer programs and data with the intent to harass Auburn University Athletics by disclosing trade secrets and transmitted those secrets without the owners' consent." While a police report failed to identify the schools that allegedly received the stolen information from Jenrath, a complaint alleges the incident occurred on July 19 at the Auburn Athletics Complex. Eighth Judicial Circuit Court of Florida Judge George Wright has awarded Florida men’s basketball student-athlete Denzel Aberdeen a temporary injunction, granting him immediate eligibility to play for the Gators during the 2026-27 campaign. Per Sandberg Phoenix Sports Law Team Lead Neil W. Blackmon, “Judge Wright found that Aberdeen is a third-party beneficiary under the 2026-27 Manual, which is a contract. Under the plain, unambiguous text of the contract and NCAA bylaw 12.6, Aberdeen is eligible to play.” Boise State Assoc. Professor Sam Ehrlich calls Judge Wright’s not granting a “mandatory injunction,” but instead finding that the status quo based on the plain text of the rule is that Aberdeen is eligible, a “massive finding.” (link, link)
