“We are up 20% in our football season tickets. … I think we are one of only 10 or 11 FBS programs to have retained both our head football coach, our offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and our starting quarterback. So, that continuity is also very important to us.”

The SEC Executive Committee will enforce conference regulations barring former NFL players from returning to college despite ongoing eligibility litigation involving LSU, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel. Tennessee Chancellor/SEC Executive Committee Chair Donde Plowman confirmed conference presidents voted to empower Commissioner Greg Sankey with the ability to impose penalties on non-compliant programs, including half-season head coach suspensions and the forfeiture of 50% of a sport's annual budget. Georgia President Jere Morehead added that maintaining eligibility standards serves as a critical test of the 16-member league's authority to self-govern. Plowman: "We have a responsibility to try and lead the best we can in this time of chaos. Our group is united on this. This is not a rule we will budge on. … It's not a new rule. We didn't just cook up a rule. ... We are a voluntary membership organization, and we have a right to set and enforce our rules. ... This is about -- if you signed a contract, you signed a contract. That's always been the bottom line. You don't get to unsign it and come back." (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban “will be the subject of a TV commercial airing during college football’s opening weekend that is supportive of the Protect College Sports Act, he told participants today on a call of more than 200 college sports stakeholders and congressional lawmakers. The call with commissioners, presidents and university board members featured Saban, Randy Levine, Cody Campbell and Sens. Eric Schmitt and Maria Cantwell. Lawmakers updated stakeholders on the legislation ahead of a possible vote when Congress returns Sept. 15. The bill is not expected to undergo dramatic changes, lawmakers said. Congressional staff members have identified at least three issues for possible revisions to address opposition: transgender athletes, conference expansion and pending litigation.” (link)

Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould joined JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher on the BFT Unfiltered podcast to outline the league's football strategy, non-conference scheduling parameters, the role of athletics in driving higher education enrollment and more. Here are some takeaways…

On athletic success driving enrollment for member institutions: "What has transpired with realignment and all the change in our industry is not just related to athletics, but what's happening in higher education. And when you look at enrollment trends and recruitment of general students and support for these universities, athletics really matters because athletics is the marketing vehicle of most of these institutions. I think what happens in our industry with realignment and economically what happens with athletics in our institutions is really about attracting students and the health and viability of these universities."

Autonomy designations versus operational investment: "We've been very clear that we're going to control what we can control. … The autonomy legislation is a legislative designation. That's it. It's not based on how much you spend. It's not based on how many games you win. It's not based on your institutional investment. It's an arbitrary bylaw that the NCAA set over a decade ago that hasn't been defined. The power moniker is a kind of PR thing that was put on those conferences. We don't control any of that. … What we're going to control is how much we invest, how we compete, how we build our brand, what we do on the playing field." (link)

West Virginia AD Wren Baker covered a bunch of ground in a sitdown with the All ‘Eers podcast. Here’s what you need to know…

Navigating the proposed $48.5M revenue-sharing cap in the Protect College Sports Act: "That's more than we're spending right now and it would probably take us at least a couple years to get to that cap. ... But at least I could build a three-year plan and say, 'Here's how we're going to get to the cap max’ and we go to work on it."

Generating immediate ROI through new premium seating inside the Coliseum: "We're adding some loge and even some kind of open-air, suite-type seating. We've sold out of that already. ... The project cost us about a million-five, I think. And so in five years, that project will pay for itself."

Financial strategy behind the West Tower project at Milan Puskar Stadium: "Probably the first thing it does for the average fan is it keeps us from having to raise the price of their tickets. ... By getting those premium spaces ... the revenue that those generates gives us additional resources to invest in our program."

Long-term aspirations for mixed-use development: "We're also looking both in the coliseum footprint and around the stadium. Is there any kind of entertainment district-type projects that could be done? Boutique hotels, shops and restaurants … to make our venues not just usable for seven, eight football games a year, but truly 365 day a year facility use opportunities." (link)

The FCS Oversight Committee adopted a proposal to alter the offseason calendar, transfer windows, and recruiting regulations for FCS programs. If approved by the DI Cabinet in October, the new model will grant programs a 21-practice out-of-season window, permit joint spring practices with other four-year institutions, and shrink the January transfer portal window from 15 to 10 days. Further modifications include reducing the 2027 preseason practice window to 27 calendar days and allowing up to 17 total staff members to conduct off-campus recruiting. (link)

Missouri AD Laird Veatch addressed the media as the Tigers unveiled their newly constructed north end zone facilities at Memorial Stadium. Veatch talked about how MU prioritized premium seating and fan experience over raw capacity, confirming the stadium now holds 63,609 fans, and addressed the integration of a new uniform patch sponsorship with Centene Company's Ambetter Health as well as the specialized premium sections backed by local corporate partners Equipment Share and Farmer Company. More from Veatch…

Hospitality over capacity: "The difference is really attributable to the smaller number of seats on the hill … and obviously the addition of all the premium seats here in the north end. And I will remind you that this has really never been about capacity. It's been about elevating a quality elite experience for our fans."

Establishing a baseline for uniform sponsorships while holding back the basketball inventory for future negotiations: "We are really excited about the unprecedented growth in our corporate sponsorships … led by St. Louis based Centene Company and, in particular, their Ambetter Health brand, to be our uniform patch partner for football and all other sports except men's and women's basketball. ... We've intentionally held back men's and women's basketball to pitch that separately."

Partnering with Sodexo Live to overhaul stadium concessions and integrate local brands like Shakespeare's Pizza: "New food and beverage concepts are going to be available throughout the stadium. Some of our concession stands have been converted to grab-and-go. ... A lot more local flavor and variety throughout the stadium." (link)

Arizona AD Desireé Reed-Francois & UCF boss Terry Mohajir were both recently on Big 12 Radio. D1.takeaways…

Reed-Francois : "[We] are up 20% in our football season tickets. … I think we are one of only 10 or 11 FBS programs to have retained both our head football coach, our offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and our starting quarterback. So, that continuity is also very important to us.” (link)

Mohajir on restructuring the football front office to isolate coaches from NIL negotiations: "Our GM does not report to our head football coach. Our GM reports to our administration. And we do that intentionally and designed so our head coach doesn't have to talk money with the players. And I think that also is great for culture. … The agents will say, ‘I want x more dollars’ or whatever. I don't ever want to put our head coach, our position coaches or the coordinators in that position and talk money with players because that becomes really personal. ... There's a clear demarcation line between the head football coach and the GM to discuss money."

More from Mohajir on maintaining a philosophy of evaluation, recruitment and development when building a roster: "I don't care how much money you have. If you don't have that as your rooted philosophy, you're gonna have a challenging time because you can't just you're gonna go overpay for people or you just can't outspend people. You have to have philosophy. We’ve seen it all over college football. … We’re going to be really disciplined, and that’s for all our sports.” (link)

Iowa AD Beth Goetz says the Hawkeyes have raised $44M toward the Carver-Hawkeye Arena renovation, per The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman, who also reports SLAM has been hired as the project’s architect while a construction firm will be hired soon. The process is expected to last two academic years, starting after 2027 spring graduation. (link)

Utah and insurance firm ALKEME have agreed to a multiyear partnership that makes ALKEME the equipment sponsor for the Utes’ football program. The ALKEME name will be displayed across the bumpers on the back of Utah football players' helmets beginning this season in what is believed to be the first equipment-only partnership in the country. Utes AD Mark Harlan: "This partnership is a tremendous example of the impact that can be made when a partner that shares our values and our vision comes forward in a really creative way. It also speaks to the new opportunities that are emerging through the innovative approach of Crimson Brand Partners. Our student-athletes will benefit from the investment that ALKEME is making in our athletics programs, and the internship program will open doors for University of Utah students." (link)

Penn State has opened the Paterno Family Football Experience Room, a permanent museum experience celebrating more than a century of PSU’s football history. The room will also function as a multi-purpose engagement space for donor and alumni gatherings, Letterman events and special program celebrations. Non-eligibility Legal Ledger…
Former Texas Tech football student-athlete Roy Alexander has filed a lawsuit against the NCAA alleging that his six-game suspension for gambling on sports is unjust and constitutes breach of contract. Alexander is seeking an injunction to allow him to return to the field earlier in his final season of eligibility, according to ESPN’s David Purdum, who adds: “The suit acknowledges that Alexander violated NCAA rules by betting on sports from 2023 to '25, but it states that he did not wager on any games involving his teams and therefore did not impact the integrity of the game. He played for Albany from 2021 to '24 and Incarnate Word in 2024-25, before transferring to Texas Tech. … According to the suit, Alexander placed small bets -- most of them under $12 and the largest $80 -- through an app from January 2023 to April 2025 while on the teams at Albany and Incarnate Word. He stopped betting after reading an ESPN article on the ‘perils of wagering’ on college sports, according to the filing.” (link)
A former Cal softball student-athlete has filed a lawsuit alleging that former HC Chelsea Spencer coerced her into a sexual relationship and prematurely ended her softball career, according to Sports Illustrated's Paige Durrenberger, who adds, per the suit: “Jane Doe's playing time directly correlated with how quickly she responded to Spencer's advances. … In 2024, the relationship became sexual and lasted for about a year. The player alleges that the coach would visit her hotel room on away trips. The complaint outlines the sexual relationship as ‘mutual,’ but acknowledges the unfair power dynamic between the two. The player claimed Spencer instructed her to delete messages and keep the relationship a secret from everyone, including her teammates. As the relationship deepened during the softball season, the player decided to end the relationship before a game … in April 2025. According to the complaint, the player expressed that she would never speak to Spencer again, and Spencer responded, ‘You're not pitching.’” Also according to the complaint, the player went to Bears Assoc. AD for Sports Administration Gordon Bayne in May 2025 to tell the truth about the relationship. Following the meeting, the player was allegedly removed from the team. UC Berkeley Vice Chancellor for Communications and Public Affairs Dan Mogulof declined to comment. (link, link)

Evening Standard

NCAA President Charlie Baker pens an urgent call-to-action through USA Today asking for federal intervention via the Protect College Sports Act to halt the rapid legal erosion of traditional collegiate eligibility boundaries. Citing a surge of over 165 filed lawsuits since the start of 2025, Baker warns that court injunctions forcing the NCAA to reinstate former NFL and NBA professionals, alongside allowing multi-school transfers, are systematically crowding out incoming high school recruits and depleting scholarship opportunities for traditional student-athletes. “As rosters are increasingly packed with older adults and former professionals, the most obvious consequence is an unfair matchup on the field. But the longer-term impact falls on the next generation of young athletes who will be squeezed out of the system as a result. Sidelining incoming freshmen doesn’t just rob them of their roster spots or athletic scholarship opportunities — it also strips away their chance to experience the lifelong benefits of college sports. In addition, adding former professionals to rosters costs already-enrolled student-athletes valuable playing time and development opportunities during their precious years in college.” More. (link

The student-athlete rev-share cap of $21.3M for 2026-27 has increased to $21.58M following an audit of power conference revenue, according to Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, who notes “there was an automatic 4% boost plus an additional, one-time increase,” allowing schools to spend an additional $131,438 during the 2026-27 season. (link)

Atlantic Hockey America Commissioner Michelle Morgan receives a four-year contract extension to continue leading the league through the 2029-30 campaign. (link)

Texas Chief of Staff/Executive Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Chris Plonsky plans to retire from her role at the conclusion of the 2026-27 academic year after 39 total years on the Forty Acres. (link)

The College Football Playoff enters its fourth consecutive season with structural changes, initiating a new six-year contract through 2031 that grants guaranteed automatic bids to the Power 4 conference champions, one bid to the highest-ranked Group of 6 team and an automatic spot to Notre Dame if listed in the top 12 of the final rankings. Negotiated in 2024 under implicit threats of a breakaway playoff, the new financial model drastically skews revenue distribution, per The Athletic’s Chris Vannini, who notes the SEC and Big Ten will each collect roughly 29% of the pool (over $21M per school), while the ACC will receive 17% ($13M), the Big 12 will take 15% ($12M), and the Group of 6 will collectively split 9% (around $1.8M per school, but more for Oregon State and Washington State). Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark reflected on the leverage wielded by the Big Ten and SEC during the initial revenue negotiations: "I’m a very different commissioner than I was (then), and I’m not sure I would have made the same decision." ESPN Senior Writer Heather Dinich sat down with The Golics this morning to share the latest on the CFP weighing in on pro-college eligibility. “The CFP Management Committee is having about a 90-minute Zoom meeting later today. They are absolutely expected to discuss a potential eligibility rule for the College Football Playoff. The Power 4 conference commissioners who will be on that call have all publicly come out against having former pro players join the college teams. Some have been more broad and said ‘you can’t do this in any sport.’ Some have been more narrow and said ‘just the NFL and NBA.’ Everyone has different nuances to it, but the bottom line is all these guys have already made rules in their respective leagues that say you can’t do this, so it seems natural that the next step is for the College Football Playoff to implement a similar rule and then in turn naturally be sued by any athletes who want to do this.” (link)

CBS’ Brandon Marcello reports UCLA AD Martin Jarmond’s dismissal came after three consecutive years of declining donor contributions and a cumulative $241.1M athletic department deficit since 2019. Despite a high-profile move from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten that boosted media rights revenue 88% to $77.3M, annual donor support plunged from $18.5M in FY22 to $13.5M in FY25 [ranking 14th out of 16 public Big Ten institutions] amid booster backlash over slow NIL adoption, poor administrative communication and a 42% two-year drop in corporate sponsorship revenue. The department's financial distress was further exacerbated by a $31.1M university campus subsidy required to offset operational losses and rising travel costs, alongside impending financial obligations that include the $20.5M annual rev-sharing cap, the second of three $10M payments owed to Cal, an eventual $5.9M Jarmond buyout and an ongoing $1B lease lawsuit filed by the Rose Bowl Operating Company. Tennessee has reportedly agreed to a new 10-year jersey patch deal with First Horizon Bank that’s valued at more than $120M, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Fox Sports’ Ben Portnoy. The agreement, which is separate from the Vols’ previously announced men’s & women’s basketball jersey patch deal with Axle Logistics, will feature the financial institution’s logo on UT’s football, soccer, golf, tennis, rowing, volleyball, track & field, cross country and swimming & diving uniforms. Portnoy adds: “[It’s] worth noting the agreement also includes a naming rights component for club spaces at Neyland Stadium and Lindsey Nelson Stadium (Baseball). Have seen a few other schools integrate naming rights into these kinds of corporate deals (Ohio State, Duke, etc.).” (link, link)

In advance of the 2026-27 athletic campaign, Georgia Tech AD Ryan Alpert provides more details to season-ticket holders of what will serve as the first Bobby Dodd Stadium reseating since 2003. The $70M renovation of the facility, which is expected to be completed prior to the 2027 season, will “include the addition of 12,500 chairback seats, the widening of aisles, the installation of handrails and a full overhaul of premium areas, which will affect the stadium’s seating manifest.” Alpert adds: “All season ticket members (with the very limited exceptions of those located in the Renasant Deck, Genesis Goal Line Club or ADA seating areas) will be a part of the reseating process. While the original design for the upcoming stadium renovation included reducing stadium capacity to around 42K seats, the new design will keep capacity at right around 50K seats. Therefore, most season ticket members will have the ability to remain in or near their current seats in this reseating process. In addition, 2027 season ticket prices and TECH Fund commitments for all bowl seating areas (non-premium) will not increase from 2026.” More. (link)

Georgia Tech also taps Veritiv as football’s first-ever jersey patch sponsor as well as the Official Sustainability Partner of Georgia Tech Athletics. The multi-year strategic partnership offers the specialty packaging, facility and print solutions company the opportunity to collaborate with Tech student-athletes in NIL activities, while working with the school to achieve three main sustainability goals – reducing waste and advancing circularity; making procurement more sustainable; and using data and innovation to improve resource efficiency. Dealing with the downstream financial effects of college sports’ new revenue sharing era was the major topic at a recent Louisiana Board of Regents NIL symposium held at Grambling State. Per the Louisiana Illuminator’s Piper Hutchinson, mid-major programs facing a tight donor pool in a state ranking next-to-last in median household income, with player budgets ranging from low-six to low-seven figures, are reallocating general fundraising gifts away from facility upgrades to keep rosters intact. Beyond financial strain, athletic leaders from LSU and Louisiana Tech highlighted issues such as unmanageable student-athlete expectations and unfulfilled contract obligations, while praising Louisiana's pioneering state law requiring background checks and mandatory registration for all NIL agents. LSU Senior Deputy AD Heath Schroyer emphasized the non-negotiable value of maintaining competitive sports programs despite the financial pressures: “No one has endless money, whether you’re at LSU or at McNeese, we’re all fighting the boogeyman, if you will. Everyone’s got more, right? ... I don’t know if you can put a monetary value on what successful athletics can do to market your university. If you take athletics away from all of the institutions in this state, all those schools, they can’t survive.” (link)
