“What’s our record against the American? 11-0. So, we haven’t lost to an American football program since we’ve been in the Sun Belt. James Madison going to the American is interesting.”
Doug Gillin
Appalachian State AD reacting to James Madison’s move to the American.

CollegeAD reports the process to find Louisiana’s next AD is “finally underway,” adding: “At the beginning of October, Louisiana officially posted the role, redefining and relabeling the position as the Ragin' Cajuns seek a CEO of Athletics. Sources say Louisiana has formed a small search committee that has quietly met with several candidates about the opportunity. While a timeline is not clear, it's our understanding that the search could be wrapped up in the coming weeks. The Ragin' Cajuns are operating without the assistance of a search firm.” (link); Dozens & dozens of sitting ADs have used a D1.dossier to prepare for their interview. You can do the same. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey covers a multitude of topics on The Assist podcast with Kyle Tucker and CBS Sports…
➤ On the primary threat to the overall health of college athletics: "To have a Final Four and a true national championship you have to have national standards by which teams and people compete and you have to have clarity around who's recruited, who's eligible to play, not court by court, state by state, waiver by waiver."
➤ The sudden implementation of the five-year eligibility rule causing roster confusion: "What happens around us affects us directly. And what I mean by that is the five-year rule changing midstream, which we did not support the immediate effective date. I do think there's value in the age-based eligibility five-year model, but not the way it was implemented. … I think there are questions that haven’t been answered, like the access points for young people.”
➤ Why March Madness prevents a major conference breakaway from the NCAA: "I do think American culture expects March Madness to take place as it has. ... I do think one of the impediments to this departure idea is the expectation that big and small, north, south, east, west, public, private, liberal arts, public research, all come together with basketball teams and have what is really a Hoosiers type moment." (link)
MAC Commissioner Dr. Jon Steinbrecher tells Field of 68’s Rob Dauster and Jeff Goodman the NCAA “needs some limited antitrust protection from Congress” to resolve the current legal issues facing college sports. “The challenges right now where you have student-athletes challenging the fairly newly enacted age-based eligibility proposal, they’re making the case that they missed out, they were unfairly treated when, in fact, the student-athletes were given and provided everything that they had been guaranteed. Didn’t really matter where you drew the line. There was going to be a group that only had four years of eligibility and now moving forward with this new rule, we’re going to have a group that can play up to five years if they want to. … We need to get back to enforcing and having educationally sound transfer rules. I’ve spent seven years writing the rule that we enacted and actually had in place for three years. And it unified all the sports’ eligibility rules into one rule. And it really came down to you were provided with one opportunity to transfer without having to sit out a year in residence. … It’s a sound rule.” (link)
Appalachian State AD Doug Gillin reacts to James Madison’s departure for the American: “An interesting step in realignment. The American’s a great conference. [Mountaineers Senior Assoc. AD for Strategic Communications] Joey Jones is here – what’s our record against the American? 11-0. So, we haven’t lost to an American football program since we’ve been in the Sun Belt. James Madison going to the American is interesting. I think there’s different ways to look at it. If you read what’s reported, whether it’s $23M to get in, $5M to get out, that’s a $28M decision, let’s say. What we really want to focus on – and certainly we’re having conversations with everybody too – what’s the best position for Appalachian? And what’s the best funding model for Appalachian? … We need to raise more money. We need to have more assets to invest in our programs, and then if we do, where is the best place to invest those? And that’s what we’re really taking a look at right now. How can we continue to grow our programs by using those resources, which are limited at times, into our programs directly, not necessarily in any other avenue.” (link)
The American Conference has agreed to a deal to make Ecore Athletic the league’s preferred flooring provider. The deal was facilitated with RISE Ventures, and Commissioner Tim Pernetti says: “What those guys have done — [RISE Ventures CCO] Bryan [Calka] and [Director of Partnership Solutions] Julieanne DiMattia, who actually worked for me at IMG, and [Senior Director/Partnership Marketing] Kelli Sargenti, who worked for the Jets — is they’ve come in and created a revenue strategy around the league, with everything from conference naming rights, which we have in the market, to licensing and sponsorship. And in this case, as they looked at community-based organizations and also organizations that quite frankly are pretty well spread across our business. Court sports is a high-demand business, and they’re sort of across the board with their technology in college sports. RISE sourced it and brought it together.” (link)
Texas AD Chris Del Conte says UT has permanently banned a fan from its football stadium after a video of the fan giving the middle finger and shouting obscenities at Florida players on the field went viral. Del Conte: "We pride ourselves on sportsmanship and treating our opponents with respect. This individual's actions did not reflect those values or meet our standards and will not be tolerated. The matter has been addressed internally, and I want to personally apologize to the University of Florida and its entire football program. Having access to our field comes with a responsibility to represent Texas with class and respect. This individual failed to uphold that responsibility and has been permanently banned from Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium." (link)
South Carolina has sold out all 54 of the Williams-Brice Stadium Reimagination Project suites, including 30 luxury suites, 12 Founders’ Suites and 12 loge suites. Limited inventory remains for the 100 Level Club. Gamecocks AD Jeremiah Donati: “The Williams-Brice Stadium Reimagination Project has remained on schedule and on budget while achieving every goal established to date. This project represents a strategic investment in the future of Gamecock football, elevating Williams-Brice Stadium as a premier venue in college athletics and delivering an enhanced game-day experience for our student-athletes, fans and supporters. We are executing this vision with a clear focus on results, positioning the program and the stadium for sustained success.” (link)

St. Bonaventure generated a record-setting $3.4M in total fundraising during the 2025-26 academic year, surpassing its prior benchmark by over $1M, according to the athletic department's annual report. The Bonnies Athletic Fund hit its targeted milestone by generating $1.3M ($1,301,332) across a record 2,279 donors, and the annual Athletics Giving Day campaign raised $749,290 from 1,988 donors. Meanwhile, support for NIL totaled nearly $1.5M for the Men’s Basketball Excellence Fund and $60K for the Women’s Basketball Excellence Fund. Operationally, the Sixth Man Club delivered $599,200 from 40 donors to back men's basketball, and St. Bonaventure began acquiring Unfurl, LLC to consolidate its institutional NIL entity with its basketball excellence funds. CBS’ Bud Elliott asks: “How much has the talent spread around in college football now that three or four teams can't hoard it all? This week, 92% of all games have a Vegas line of 2 scores or less. A decade ago, same week, that number was just 65%. That's an enormous jump.” (link)

Rockbeach Training Founder/CEO/former Cincinnati Deputy AD/CRO Anthony Di Fino: “Make the call before you make the call. In this business, every new rep learns on real fans, because there’s nowhere else to practice. That’s the most expensive call in sports: a poorly trained intern or rep losing a fan. Now there’s somewhere else to practice.” (link)

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark met with the media over the past two days at the official introduction of new Iowa State AD Jared Benko in Ames and from Monster Energy Big 12 Basketball Media Days in Kansas City. Here are some key takeaways…
➤ On the possibility the Big 12 Football Championship could be eliminated: “[It’s] one of our marquee tent-pole events. … If it does go away – and there's no reason to believe it will or won't, more to come on that – we'll look to replace it with something. We'll need another tent-pole event to take its place, and I'm working on that now.”
➤ Does he foresee conference championship basketball tournaments potentially going away with NCAA Tournament expansion? “Tentpole events for us matter. Our [football] champ game has been very valuable. Our basketball tournament, both men's and women's, has been very valuable. If there's a point in time where change is made, we will look to backstop those events with other events. We're in the event business. It drives a lot of fan engagement and excitement. We'll see what happens in the future. Those are big moments for us. For some reason if one goes away, we'll replace it with something different.”
➤ How difficult is it for Big 12 football programs to schedule showcase opportunities such as the one that resulted in last Saturday’s BYU home win over Notre Dame? “Our schools are committed to playing the biggest and best. I do believe that if we were to get something done with the CFP, expand to 24, you'll see scheduling, the scheduling dynamic, move in a different direction. I think that will be a positive when you think about scheduling and the best matchups week-in, week-out, specifically out of conference. We're committed to it. We want those big moments. We want to compete against the best.”
➤ On how the Big 12 will help non-revenue generating and Olympic sports: "Olympic sports are critically important for us, and when I think about our growth going forward, obviously, we can continue to grow football and men's and women's basketball, but a lot of focus from a conference perspective are on those core Olympic sports that matter. You're seeing fan engagement. You're seeing ratings. You think about volleyball, women's soccer, softball and wrestling, gymnastics, baseball. All those are value-creators on a go-forward basis and we're putting a lot of emphasis behind them." (link, link)
Could College Football Playoff expansion to 24 teams incentivize top blue-blood brands to go independent like Notre Dame? Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde believes it’s an intriguing thought, if not a new one. Key takeaways…
➤ “Several years ago, one of the nation’s top [ADs] told me he believed Texas, Michigan, Ohio State and USC could all successfully go independent, perhaps others. … Dumbing down the playoff for the sake of mid-tier power-conference teams could hasten a breaking from traditional ties for the biggest brands. If winning a nonsensically large league has almost no inherent value, why do it when more lucrative, autonomous alternatives exist?”
➤ Significant roadblocks remain regarding housing non-revenue sports and how to schedule games. “While it’s easy to wave a hand and say none of those sports matter, they actually do (especially basketball and all those with federally protected equal access and opportunity via Title IX). … As for scheduling football games: Who is willing to play the independents, and what’s in it for them? The blueblood independents could all play each other and fill out maybe one-third of a schedule, then they might have to buy the other two-thirds at a highway robbery rate.”
➤ Also, per Forde, a more immediate short-term move for top-tier brands in major leagues may be demanding uneven revenue distribution based on postseason advancement and viewership metrics before an inevitable 20- to 40-school super league materializes. (link)
Montana State holds down the No. 1 spot in the first in-season reveal of the Football Championship Committee’s top 10 FCS football rankings. Tarleton State ranks second, while Youngstown State, Stephen F. Austin and South Dakota State round out the top five. Positions 6-10 consist of North Dakota, Northern Arizona, South Dakota, Austin Peay and Harvard, respectively. (link)
With potential College Football Playoff expansion to 24 teams, Army and Navy officials are working with an ideal goal of preserving the exclusive window for the annual Army-Navy Game, per Reuters. Under the proposed CFP model, the 16-team first round would likely begin during the second week of December, the exclusive broadcasting window currently held by the two service academies, to ensure the tournament concludes by mid-January. With conference championship games expected to be eliminated to accommodate the new format, moving the game to the first week of December or Thanksgiving week are potential alternatives. Army AD Tom Theodorakis emphasized the priority of preserving the matchup's standalone platform while ensuring postseason access: "I view these conversations as a win for the academies and 'America's Game.' ... If we can preserve Army-Navy while giving our cadet athletes the opportunity to be in the College Football Playoff, that's the best of both worlds." (link)
Through seven weeks and every FBS team playing at least two home games, Fresno State leads non-Power 4 schools in average attendance at 40,762, up 7.18% from last year’s average. East Carolina, Colorado State, Memphis and South Florida round out the top five. Full database. (link)
Super notable sports finance development from Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams: “The NFL is partnering with General Atlantic on a new investment fund. This will turbo-charge 32 Equity, the league's investment arm, and create a GP structure where the league shares in carry-on investments.” (link)
Vermont is proceeding with plans for its long-delayed multipurpose center, including a new basketball arena, after UVM trustees recently authorized up to $10M in spending on pre-construction activities for the project. Per WCAX 3’s Ike Bendavid, work on the Tarrant Center originally commenced back in 2019, but was derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, a hole in the middle of the UVM athletic campus has marked where the facility will be built between Gutterson Fieldhouse and Patrick Gym. The new arena will serve as home to the men’s and women’s basketball teams, while expected to also host non-athletic events such as concerts. The overall project also includes renovations to Gutterson Fieldhouse and some of the money has already been spent on new campus recreation and wellness facilities. According to the school, rising costs have been the biggest hurdle to get the originally projected $100M center back on track. Next steps for the project include determining the final cost as well as how much additional fundraising will be needed. (link)
