The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit appears poised to reverse a nationwide injunction that would grant a fifth year of eligibility to the high school class of 2022, a potential major legal victory for the NCAA, Sportico's Michael McCann observes. During oral arguments in the Wisne case yesterday, McCann notes NCAA attorney Rakesh Kilaru successfully pressed the argument that the plaintiffs' antitrust claims lacked sufficient market data, warning that allowing the return of former players would actively drive down athlete wages through labor oversupply while displacing current roster members. Conversely, players' attorney Robert Shelquist argued the NCAA operates as an unfair monopolist but faced a "hot bench" that repeatedly criticized his broad definition of the relevant antitrust market encompassing all DI athletes. Notably, a victory for the NCAA would only cover the 10th Circuit’s jurisdiction of Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah and Wyoming. (link)
Meanwhile, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) issued an executive order Tuesday stating that “no state institution of higher education or private college or university in Ohio shall uphold any rule, requirement, standard or other limitation that prevents a student-athlete of that institution or college in the Class of 2022 from fully participating in intercollegiate athletics in the 2026-27 academic year, regardless of whether the student-athlete completed four seasons of intercollegiate competition or exhausted eligibility under 2025-26 NCAA regulations or any prior regulations, and regardless of any athletic authority's interpretation of applicable NCAA eligibility bylaws.” (link)
NCAA President Charlie Baker indicated in a statement that “the Governor of Ohio cannot legislate NCAA eligibility rules. One elected official seeking to make their own rules for their own schools' advantage is a terrible way to run athletic competitions and precisely why Congress must pass the PCSA as soon as possible. And not only did NCAA members vote unanimously to implement the aged based eligibility change in this way, the Ohio Court of Appeals just recently agreed with that decision. … Eligibility rules established through the Association's governance process have been and will continue to be applied consistently across the membership by the NCAA including in the state of Ohio.” (link)
Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that “in its latest filing in a federal lawsuit against LSU, the SEC re-emphasizes that the case should not be dismissed as LSU’s threat to interference with the league’s First Amendment rights is ‘ongoing’ and calls expulsion from the conference a ‘very real threat.’ The SEC says LSU continues to ‘flout’ the rules, offering an example: the school’s open recruitment of NBA player RJ Luis. SEC says LSU has ‘refused to publicly & definitely state that he will not be included in LSU’s basketball roster’ and mentions recent Will Wade comments.” Furthermore, Dellenger notes, the SEC contends that LSU is not “prepared to accept the consequences of its stubborn refusal to follow” conference rules. (link, link)
However, LSU Men’s Basketball HC Will Wade addressed the media via Zoom in lieu of making the trip to Birmingham for SEC Media Days and was asked directly about RJ Luis’ status. Wade: “We're going to follow all the SEC protocols with him. I think it's been pretty clear what the SEC protocols are around that. He didn't travel with us to McNeese, and he hasn't been rostered." CBS’ Isaac Trotter consequently notes: “The RJ Luis discourse can end now. Will Wade is not planning to fight the SEC to get him on the floor after Luis signed multiple NBA deals.” (link, link)
As reported, James Madison has committed $23M to join the American, with corporate sponsors covering the Dukes’ entrance fee. SBJ’s Matt Fortuna notes that specific donor gifts will fund JMU’s Sun Belt exit obligations, allowing existing American members to maintain their current payouts without dilution as ESPN helps fund the addition. One sitting American AD praised Commissioner Tim Pernetti's vision for expanding the league's Eastern seaboard footprint: "It’s a good addition for us; I wish we added them during the last go-round. If you could grab any [Group of 6] schools out there and add them to your league, Boise State is No. 1, JMU is No. 2. … We have two academies. If you add the third in Air Force, from a TV viewership standpoint I think that’s an added bonus. And secondly — and this can actually be first — I do think our league would be looked on favorably congressionally or politically if we’re a league that has all three service academies.” (link)
In an appearance on the Gary Parrish Show, Memphis AD Dr. Ed Scott clarified comments made by Tigers Men’s Basketball HC Penny Hardaway regarding his personal financial contributions to the team's NIL budget. Scott explained that Hardaway did not directly pay players, which would violate NCAA rules, but instead pledged to fundraise $2.6M to push the total roster budget to $9M. Scott noted the athletic department is directly funding $6.4M of that total—up from $5M last year—and will front the entire $9M to guarantee player contracts. Hardaway has agreed to personally cover any fundraising shortfall out of pocket by the end of the fiscal year in June. More from Scott…
➤ "If you can find a mid-major, meaning a Group of Six school that's as good as we are in football that is giving equal to more money to their basketball program, I'd love to talk to that AD and see how they're doing some things. … I think we're the only one in the Group of Six that I know of … that has given equal to more money to men's basketball than we are football because basketball matters at Memphis."
➤ "I'm not allowed to run a deficit in the athletic department. ... Look, we know Louisville presented a $35M deficit to their board. We know that Boise State, who's a competitor of ours in the G6, who beat us in football, is running an $18M deficit. I can't do that. So, we’re not going to run the business model that way.” (link)
Prosecutors in Pennsylvania announced Tuesday that Jalen Smith played a "central role" in helping fix games in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 NCAA Division I basketball seasons, placing bets and recruiting players with the promise of a big payment for purposefully underperforming during a game and as such has been sentenced to six years in federal prison. FBI Special Agent Wayne A. Jacobs: “Today's sentencing sends a clear message: Those who exploit professional and collegiate athletes for personal gain will be held accountable. This conduct does more than harm individual athletes. It undermines the integrity of sports and the trust placed in fair competition.” The point-shaving scheme Smith was involved in is said to have involved nearly 30 NCAA basketball games and prosecutors accused Smith and at least 26 other named defendants of wagering millions of dollars and paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to players in bribes, ranging from $10K to $30K per game, according to an indictment. The latest edition of D1.extra finds that so far private equity investment in English football has yielded inconsistent on-field results, with 10 of 19 clubs examined finishing higher on average and nine dropping down the pyramid since 2016. The median performance change rests at a modest +0.5 places per season. Minority stakes paired with established operators produced the highest gains, highlighted by Aston Villa rising 12.2 places and Bournemouth jumping 9.3 places. Conversely, funds purchasing majority control at a club's peak struggled, as Southampton plummeted 10.3 spots and Chelsea fell 4.3 places. As this report is meant to establish a baseline more than to draw conclusions, it’s prudent to weigh the importance of entry points and management structures along with the presence of institutional money itself. The Women’s Lacrosse Oversight Committee will implement a new championship schedule beginning in 2027 to expand primetime television coverage and increase fan attendance. Under the revised date formula, first- and second-round games will shift to Thursday and Saturday from the current Friday and Sunday model, while quarterfinal matchups will be split across Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Moving the early rounds up one day preserves the existing recovery period between the second round and the quarterfinals while creating a multi-night broadcast window. Florida Senior Assoc. AD of Operations/Committee Chair Lindsey Thomas: "This is a great opportunity to increase women’s lacrosse viewership. Increasing the fan base and viewership is a priority for the committee, and the new date formula also will provide additional rest for teams." (link)

Playfly Sports will lead local and national ad sales this season for the Los Angeles Clippers’ regional broadcasts, per SBJ’s Tom Friend, who notes this marks the company’s first all-encompassing NBA partnership and follows up similar hybrid deals with the MLB’s Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Guardians, Colorado Rockies and Minnesota Twins. The company has long represented the franchise for just national sales on its local telecasts, but with the Clippers preparing to execute a one-year direct-to-distributor local TV deal, a partial-OTA package on Nexstar’s KTLA-5 and reprise ClipperVision for streaming, Playfly will handle their entire 2026-27 portfolio. Georgia Tech will introduce 20 facility and fan experience upgrades at McCamish Pavilion ahead of the 2026-27 basketball season. Additional upgrades include a new LED lighting system and the implementation of value-driven promotions, such as $3 beer offerings during select midweek matchups. Full rundown of upgrades. (link)

The Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen and Catie Harper spoke with James Madison President Jim Schmidt about the school's impending move to the American, noting “conversations about the move have been going on for sometime, but Schmidt said the potential raise in the Sun Belt's exit fee was a determining factor to make the move now.” Schmidt described it as a ‘strategic moment of time,’ adding: “We either should be intentionally staying in the Sun Belt for the foreseeable future, knowing that it would be hard to leave or the exit fee is high. Or if we're going to make a move sometime in the next two to three or four years, now seems like the right time to do it.” Schmidt offered some details on the $23M American entrance fee, noting JMU is bringing corporate sponsorship deals to the conference as a whole. Those sponsors, who have yet to be announced, are now doing business with the league contingent on adding JMU. Mettlen: “JMU is bringing corporate $$ to the American to cover some, maybe all, of the entrance fee. It's not on top of. It seems similar to a smaller-scale version of the FedEx package Memphis offered the Big 12.” (link, link, link)
In the wake of James Madison’s announcement that it would join the American by July 1, 2028, The Athletic’s Chris Vannini, Justin Williams and Matt Baker examine what that move means for JMU, the Group of 6 and more.
➤ With JMU’s arrival set to put the American at 15 football-playing members by 2028, adding another football-playing member would make for a cleaner schedule. Miami (OH), Liberty and UConn are among those that have shown interest, with the RedHawks reportedly having included an offer of $30M or more to the league. Liberty has the financial resources, enrollment and athletic success to fit and could also continue an in-state rivalry with JMU, however, school leadership’s past outspoken political involvement has turned off many school presidents who make such decisions. One person briefed on conversations said American schools would like some nonconference basketball games scheduled with UConn in exchange for welcoming back its football program to the league, but the Huskies see that as a drag on their MBB schedule.
➤ As to how the Sun Belt and the rest of the G6 will react: “The Sun Belt looked deeply into adding Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee from Conference USA in 2021, as did the MAC. … Perhaps they could be targets again. So could Liberty, but the Flames have ambition to join the American. If the Sun Belt raises those exit fees this week, it could make the league less appealing to join by becoming harder to leave. If the league wants to get into Florida, there’s also Florida International, which was in the Sun Belt from 2005 to 2012 before moving to CUSA. … FCS program Tarleton State has lobbied heavily for an FBS invitation for years, especially from Conference USA. … Expect that push to continue.”
➤ Former MAC Commissioner/Pivotal Sports & Entertainment Principal of College Sports Strategy Rick Chryst calls the next few years an “audition period” in college sports, with multiple looming events set to shape college sports’ future — starting with the CFP’s likely expansion to 24 teams. “That raises the stakes for sure in terms of the opportunities.” With most league TV deals set to expire in the 2030-34 range, schools and conferences are already positioning themselves to receive the biggest payouts possible when that day arrives. Consultant Lindsay Conner: “The more strong schools you have in your conference, the stronger your hand is in media rights negotiations and the more you’re likely to receive in the next media rights deal.” (link)
Nebraska’s athletic department has spent $85M (14%) to date of its approved $600M budget for the Big Red Rebuild project, which is set to include “significant renovations and modernization of Memorial Stadium." Approved by the Board of Regents back in April following the pause of a previous $450M proposal under former AD Trev Alberts, the project is being entirely funded through private donations and bond financing. Per Nebraska Public Media’s Aaron Bonderson, crews are currently drilling and pouring the foundation for what will become the new West Stadium, with demolition of the West and South Stadiums slated to begin following the current gridiron season. In addition, the university largely completed an $11.4M renovation of the Bob Devaney Sports Center ahead of the 2026 fall season. The effort, which came in within an approved $13.35M budget, expanded capacity to 10K and added chairback seating, premium spaces and ADA accessibility upgrades, with more than $1.5M remaining for planned audio, video and flooring improvements. (link)
The Utah Board of Trustees has approved a motion to move forward with the Utes’ plans to renovate Rice-Eccles Stadium. Per the Salt Lake Tribune’s Jason Batacao, “the total project cost will be around $39.1M including soft costs,” and will be funded by the school’s on-hand capital expenditures money. (link)
Arkansas Pine Bluff is officially breaking ground today on its first-ever on-campus track and field facility. The project, being developed through the collaborative efforts of Tarkett Sports, Design One Contracting, McClelland Consulting Engineers and Polk Stanley Wilcox, will also serve as the home venue for UAPB’s women’s soccer program. Rising NIL guarantees and escalating development costs are creating serious internal concerns about the long-term viability of EA Sports’ College Football video game franchise just two years after its successful return, per Insider Gaming’s Mike Straw. Here’s the deal…
➤ Following the record-breaking release of College Football 25 back in 2024, sales have steadily dropped with subsequent titles. The most recent release, College Football 27, lasted just a month in the top 10 for video game sales as a standalone inclusion. Player payout costs have surged from $600 per athlete ($7.5M total) in 2024 to $1,500 per athlete (nearly $20M total) for CFB 27, with internal projections fearing NIL costs could reach $30M-$40M in coming years.
➤ Combined with tens of millions in university licensing fees, marketing costs and the underperformance of the Ultimate Team mode, one studio source expressed concern that the game could soon be discontinued. “If we don’t find a way to keep players around and, in turn, make more, we won’t have anything. Forget in 10 years, I’m scared about if we have a game by the end of the decade. Games aren’t getting cheaper to make, and there’s the real concern with all of us that EA’s going to streamline and just have a few key franchises and dump everything else.” (link)

St. John’s inks a partnership naming AlumniFi as the Official Credit Union of St. John's Athletics. Through the deal, the digital-first banking brand will also be the first corporate partner in program history to have its logo prominently displayed on the Red Storm's men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball and lacrosse uniforms. The agreement was facilitated through Learfield’s St. John's Sports Properties. (link)

Federal Trade Commission officials are conducting a probe into the $167B online sports gambling industry, focusing on whether major sportsbooks such as DraftKings and FanDuel have engaged in deceptive and misleading advertising practices. While political and career staffers at the agency are evaluating the market, “prediction markets” such as Kalshi and Polymarket are not expected to be included. The review arrives amid growing criticism from conservative advocacy groups regarding increases in suicide, hospitalizations and bankruptices among users. Per The Washington Sun’s Jeff Stein, the Trump administration has so far taken a hands-off approach with the industry with the White House having even promoted an advertisement for sports-betting site Stake during the UFC event held on the South Lawn this summer.
