“There’s a big lacrosse base out here in the Texas community. When you look at lacrosse, we want to leverage the growth of the sport in Texas, the 3,200 high school athletes competing across nearly 160 varsity or junior varsity teams statewide. That is very, very significant.”

SMU AD in a Q&A with Inside Lacrosse’s Matt Kinnear on the decision to launch a D1 men’s lacrosse program.

lowa State officials met with AD candidates on Thursday as part of the final round of interviews, per CollegeAD, which reports: “The in-person meetings took place in Chicago. The final interviews come nearly a week after lowa State completed its virtual round last Thursday and Friday. It's our understanding that the final pool included at least one sitting athletic director and at least one senior executive from a Power Four program. Sources believe lowa State could make a decision in the coming days.” (link)

The College Football Playoff issued the following statement concerning discussions about a 24-team format: “Constructive discussions with ESPN continued this week. We have enjoyed a strong partnership with ESPN since our inception and are appreciative of the productive dialogue we have had throughout the negotiating period and continuing over the last several days. We will provide additional updates on the matters of future format and media rights when appropriate.” (link)

James Madison AD Matt Roan on whether the Dukes could make the move to the American prior to the July 1, 2028, target date: “I will say never. I think it’s a possibility … and if it’s beneficial to the Sun Belt and the American I think we’d be open to that possibility.” Roan adds that conversations with donors about covering the higher exit fee if JMU does leave early are “not very advanced, but I think we could quickly pivot to get there.” (link)

Ivy League Commissioner Robin Harris joined The Field of 68 podcast to discuss the league’s unique athletic model, moving the annual “Ivy Madness” men’s and women’s basketball tournaments to the PPL Center in Allentown, Pa., and more. Here are some takeaways…

➤ NCAA Tournament expansion and league impact: "I was squarely on the fence because I could see both the positives for the Ivy League and I could see the potential negatives. ... For example, with the women, we pretty regularly now are placing multiple teams in the tournament and so obviously expansion continues to help that. And I continue to believe on the men's side that there will be a day where we will be able to have that second team."

➤ Moving the "Ivy Madness" men's and women's basketball tournaments to the PPL Center starting in 2028: "We have been looking throughout the past 10 years for neutral sites that are also cost-effective because we candidly don't generate net revenue on our tournaments. They're about the student-athlete experience. ... It’s how we operate, but we also have to be fiscally prudent. Even though we looked at major venues, they just didn’t work economically. And so, as we continued to explore options, PPL Center became a really exciting option. ... The enhancements to the arena are truly incredible and it’s right-sized. … By engaging in a three-year deal, it gives us the chance to anchor the tournament and to grow it." (link)

In a Q&A with Inside Lacrosse’s Matt Kinnear, SMU AD Damon Evans talked about the decision to launch a DI men’s lacrosse program…

➤ "There’s a big lacrosse base out here in the Texas community. When you look at lacrosse, we want to leverage the growth of the sport in Texas, the 3,200 high school athletes competing across nearly 160 varsity or junior varsity teams statewide. That is very, very significant."

➤ On leveraging the transfer portal and eligibility rules to fast-track program assembly: "We saw this as a unique opportunity with the five years of eligibility rule that came into play. We believe it's a unique opportunity to stand up a program and really make some noise.”

➤ Is it fair to say the influx of Ivy League transfers accelerated the timeline? “That's very fair to say. You’ve got to take advantage of the moment, and we want to take advantage of the moment. Obviously, the portal is going to play big for us as we move forward. I know from everything I hear there’s an elite group of individuals coming out of the Ivies. I'm sure that a lot of the other programs across the country are going to be going after them. So we're looking at the opportunity to attract talented student-athletes who want to help us establish this program. They will be the foundation. They will be the pillars that stand this program up.” (link)

Surging roster costs and massive buyouts are reshaping college football coaching carousel decisions, per Fox Sports’ Ben Portnoy, who notes such factors are forcing athletic departments “to make a new-look cost analysis: Is it better to spend $100M to fire our coach and bring in a new staff? Or, is it better to put another $15M into the roster and see what happens?” Here’s the gist…

➤ An anonymous industry source: “The rev-share piece is definitely coming into play. That's a factor now when you fire your coach because not only do you’ve got to pay out the coach — you may have to pay a buyout — then you may have to pay this roster off, and then you’ve got to have enough money to go get a new roster."

➤ Wisconsin serves as a key example, with the team off to a 4-1 start this year after the university restructured its NIL operations to better support HC Luke Fickell. Another anonymous industry source adds: “It's like, OK, well, is this new coach that we're going to hire that much better than what we had previously? Or if we invest more in the guy that at one point we thought was the perfect fit, is that a better math solution than starting all over and investing more?" (link)

UCLA is in the process of assuming control of Pauley Pavilion, Drake Stadium, and the Wallis Annenberg Soccer Stadium from the university's recreation department, according to On3's Tracy Pierson. Doing so will allow the athletic department to retain revenue from its own sporting events and eliminate facility usage fees previously paid by the basketball program. Pierson: “A timeframe for when the transition would be completed was not provided. UCLA athletics obtaining control of its on-campus venues should generate millions in revenue. It also makes it possible for the athletic department to generate income from other events conducted in the venues, like concerts or rallies.” (link)

One-third of Arkansas baseball suites at Baum-Walker Stadium will turn over following a new reseating plan that raised minimum donor thresholds to $40K annually and added a 20K priority points requirement, according to Whole Hog Sports' Matt Jones. The overhaul generated $8.8M in new pledges within three weeks—including $5.75M in positioning gifts—as 12 of the stadium's 36 suites opened up for a waiting list of 42 high-level accounts. Chair-back season ticket holders also faced donation increases from $250 to a minimum of $500 per year, with 80 of 127 impacted accounts agreeing to the higher rate to help fund rising costs across the athletic department. Utah State has received a $4.5M joint commitment from Duane and Marci Shaw and their nephew and niece, Brian and Natalie Broadbent. The gift will support student-athlete scholarships, as well as the areas of greatest need within the athletic department. (link)

FAU has received a $1M gift from Howard Guggenheim that will benefit students, faculty and programs within FAU Athletics, the College of Business and Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, as well as the Kurt and Marilyn Wallach Holocaust and Jewish Studies Building. (link)

The NBA and WNBA are partnering with the National Council on Problem Gambling to launch a comprehensive responsible gaming initiative this fall addressing the risks associated with both traditional sportsbooks and emerging prediction markets. The cross-platform campaign will run across social and linear channels, emphasizing that wagering should remain an entertainment vehicle rather than an income generator. NBA Head of Media Distribution and Partnerships Scott Kaufman-Ross: "As the ways people engage with sports continue to evolve, it is important that fans understand the risks associated with putting money on sports outcomes. [We] want to help fans make informed decisions, understand the risk and, if they choose to bet, trade or anything similar, that they do so responsibly." (link)

The College Football Playoff is finalizing a deal to expand to 24 teams starting in 2027, with ESPN to buy additional games through the 2031 season, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Thamel and Heather Dinich report that the 24-team field is likely to include the Power 4 champions, the highest-ranked Group of 6 team and 19-at large spots, although those details have yet to be finalized. The top eight seeds would earn a bye, with the New Year’s Six bowls expected to remain as hosts of the quarterfinals and semifinals. (link, link)

Delaware State AD Tony Tucker will step down to become the Senior Assoc. Director of Admissions/Director of Strategic Projects and External Relations at the St. Andrew's School. President Tony Allen: “Tony Tucker came to us from a long and successful career in residential K–12 private education, and he is going back to an industry he knows well, right here at home. … He took on the quiet work of reorganizing how we serve students before we asked him to lead athletics, and then he revamped the athletics department around responsible growth, with a particular emphasis on women's sports, academic achievement for every scholar-athlete, stronger partnerships with organizations like the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) and new opportunities for sponsorships, fund-raising and investment in critical and long-overdue enhancements to our athletic footprint.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker recently dispatched a letter to House lawmakers urging them to pass the Protect College Sports Act in its current form, while notably citing statistics that highlight the negative effects multiple transfers are having on graduation rates. From the missive, in part: “The NCAA recently conducted a comprehensive review of graduation outcomes for all Division I student-athletes who entered college sports in 2018. Despite the fact that many in this class graduated before the current unlimited transfer policy went into effect, we are already seeing fewer Division I student-athletes graduating in six years. Across race, gender and sport, our review found that multiple transfers negatively impact student-athlete graduation. Of those who did not transfer, 88% graduated on time, and 12% did not. Of one-time transfers, 81% graduated on time, and 19% did not. And only 71% of multiple transfers graduated on time, while 29% did not. For decades, participating in NCAA sports provided a pathway to academic success at rates that far surpassed those for nonathletes, but endless attacks on eligibility and transfer rules are threatening that success.” (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey sat down with both CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander and 247Sports’ Kyle Tucker at the SEC Basketball Tipoff to discuss a myriad of topics. Here’s what you need to know…

➤ On March Madness binding Division I together to prevent potential breakaways: "I do think one of the impediments to this departure idea is the expectation that big and small, north, south, east, west, public, private, liberal arts, public research all come together with basketball teams and have what is really a ‘Hoosiers’-type moment. That's what America expects. ... Why are Fordham and Florida in Division I together? Why [are] Montana State and Ole Miss? Why [are] Texas and Tennessee Tech? … It's because of March. And you can make up all the other reasons. In my opinion, it's because of March. And that's a cultural expectation."

➤ Evolving governance among the Power 4 conferences: “We've tried to adapt over time, and this is where there's maybe more authority and responsibility given to the four conferences in decision making. I don't think we can solve big problems in big rooms filled with people. And every problem we have is a big problem right now, in my opinion. And so the adaptation needs to continue about how we govern ourselves nationally. … We have to have a decision making process and eligibility standard. An agreement to make that work.”

➤ Describing the job of a power league commissioner in 2026: "It's intense, but that would've been five, six, seven years ago. It is transformational. And I think that's always been part of the collegiate environment, but it's accelerated.” (link, link)

“Can Greg Sankey's proposed College Football Playoff scheduling requirement work?” Writing for On3, Ross Dellenger posits that for Power 4 leagues outside the ACC, which is currently the only conference in which each school is slated to play 10 P4 games in 2027, things would likely get “real tricky,” assuming the requirement takes effect next season and the College Football Playoff actually expands (see above). Dellenger notes P4 programs without a non-conference power opponent in 2027 include five Big Ten members, one SEC school and five Big 12 programs. With expansion looming, athletic administrators at those schools find themselves in somewhat of a scramble mode. Dellenger adds: “Can the Big Ten and Big 12 schools strike scheduling agreements? That seems like the easiest route here. Oregon plays Arizona; Washington gets Kansas; Texas Tech meets Indiana; USC against TCU; West Virginia vs. Nebraska. … Not so fast. Who gets the home game? And the advantage and dollars that come with it? Do you strike a two-year home-and-home? These are questions being asked.” More on scheduling, Dellenger: “Notre Dame is expected to increase its frequency of playing SEC and Big Ten schools as part of the 24-team expansion.” (link, link)

With the CAA’s current media rights contract set to end with the 2026-27 season, Commissioner Joe D'Antonio says the league’s negotiating with FloSports and CBS Sports Network on an extension, while also exploring outside options. “The good news is that we're going to have options. ... There are options both within our current structure and outside of our current structure." (link)

Boise State secured unanimous approval from the Idaho State Board of Education on Wednesday for an $18M athletic department deficit spending plan, most of which will go into student-athlete revenue sharing. President David Hahn: “I personally don’t even like the term … deficit in athletics. Boise State is not running a deficit. We are managing our reserves, we are managing our finances. I’m putting that capital where it needs to be for success of all of the missions.” Per Idaho Education News’ Kevin Richert, the department now projects a $16.9M deficit for the current fiscal year ending June 30, with rev-sharing distributions set to increase from about $10M to $14.1M. The university plans to contribute $3M toward athletic debt service, while the department hopes to clear $2M from special events at Albertsons Stadium, including two nights of the Banana Ball tour and a Luke Combs concert. If the deficit exceeds $18M, athletics would have to return to the State Board for additional spending authority. Board member David Turnbull described the vote in stark terms. “The option is to basically put a bullet in Bronco sports if we don’t give them this runway.” (link)

The Big 12 agrees to a multi-year strategic partnership that will provide Principal Financial Group with featured uniform patch placement at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments as well as select Big 12 Olympic sport championship events. Sports agency rEvolution helped broker the agreement. (link)

SMU announces the official launch of its men’s lacrosse program, with play slated to begin in the spring of 2028. In just two months, athletics has already brought in $15M to support what will represent the first men’s lacrosse program in the state of Texas, against a goal to raise $25M by April 1, 2027. Iona announces plans to add women’s flag football as its 27th varsity sport, with competition slated to begin in the 2027-28 academic year. (link)

Deals, Deals, Deals…
➤ Indiana inks a five-year agreement to expand its partnership with Merchants Bank by naming the financial institution the Hoosiers’ official jersey patch partner. Through the deal, which follows up a 20-year, $50M naming rights pact with the company last fall, Merchants Bank branding will appear on uniforms across IU’s 24 varsity sports programs, as well as on coaches' apparel. ➤ Columbia has suspended Women’s Basketball HC Megan Griffith for the initial three games of the upcoming 2026-27 campaign after a review determined she “had coaching interactions with the team that didn’t align with expectations.” Per the AP’s Doug Feinberg, an external firm evaluation was done after the university received a complaint about Griffith’s coaching behavior during practices from a prior season. The school also noted the review didn’t require NCAA notice of any rules violations and didn’t involve any allegations of violations of the school’s anti-discrimination, Title IX or related policies. The women’s basketball team notified the AP that it was aware of the suspension. “This is not indicative of our experience as part of this program, which has been overwhelmingly positive. We fully stand with and support Coach Griffith. This program is a family, and we pride ourselves on being a supportive and inclusive environment for all. We are ready to attack the season.” (link)
➤ Long Island taps former LPGA Symetra Tour pro Dani P. Maloney as Women’s Golf HC. (link)
