“Underutilized campus space is very much a real thing, and I don’t think it gets enough attention relative to how much it costs institutions every year. ... The opportunity is treating occupancy as an operating input—like enrollment or research dollars—so portfolio, energy and service decisions get made with the same seriousness.”
Nic Halverson
Occuspace CEO on the surplus of unused space on college campuses costing the higher education sector roughly $79B annually.

Old Dominion introduced Tim House as the university's sixth AD and Monarchs President Brian Hemphill cited House's revenue generation background and competitive drive as key factors in the hire: "He is a proven athletic administrator, a strong leader, a fundraiser, and a revenue generator. He has built a career working tirelessly behind the scenes so that student athletes, coaches, and staff can shine their very brightest on the very biggest stages." Takeaways from House…
➤ "Monarch Athletics can and should be the catalyst for expediting and amplifying those incredible initiatives and everything going on on this campus. ... College athletics is the greatest marketing platform anyone ever came up with. ... We have a responsibility to win so that everyone pays attention to everything great that I just talked about and everything else great going on on this campus so that more people want to come here, go to these games, get excited, be inspired, go to college."
➤ "This is my first time being an athletic director. I'm not coming here to fail, you know? I'm coming here to win. I'm only coming to a place that I believe can do it at the highest level. This is the best job in the Sun Belt and it's actually one of the best jobs in the country in all of college athletics." (link)
ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips caught up with The Mercury News' Jon Wilner to talk about Stanford and Cal after three years in the league: “Without question, there’s a commitment to football. When you hire Ron Rivera and when you hire Andrew Luck, to me, that’s an emphatic statement that they are paying attention to football. Both of them are all-in on sports. They are finding a way to support their teams and coaches. … All our schools go through transition periods, whether it’s coaching changes or administrative changes, changes with presidents and athletic directors, changes in funding.” Phillips acknowledges that “what I want us to do is to continue assessing how we can help [Cal and Stanford] from a travel standpoint. That’s something we talk about not only annually but throughout the year. For the (ACC) legacy schools, the trips west aren’t as often. In football, it’s once every other year. In basketball, you play two games and go back. But for Cal and Stanford, there’s more cadence, like in baseball. I want us to continue to be really thoughtful in how we’re scheduling.” (link)
Wake Forest AD John Currie addressed reporters ahead of Friday's football matchup with Miami (FL) and covered topics including federal legislation, facility development, athletic department finances and more. Here are the main points…
➤ Preparing contingency plans if federal legislation fails: "There are some people who say it'll be after the election. Senator (Ted) Cruz said it would be before the election. Who knows? I mean, this is not a new gray area — we've been operating in uncertainty throughout my career. So what we do is operate on what we know today, while also building plans for different scenarios. — if the PCSA passes, if it doesn't pass, if we end up with some other model of governance. ... Very detailed. Very detailed. Three-ring binder, tab dividers and everything."
➤ ACC revenue metrics and competitiveness against the Big Ten: "if you look at the three schools in the Atlantic Coast Conference who beat three schools in the Big Ten last week, they were in the same ballpark financially — all six of those schools. ... And according to The Athletic, all three of the ACC schools that won had less revenue sharing than the three Big Ten schools they beat. And then you look at the difference in The Athletic's reporting between where Wake Forest is and where Miami is — it looks a lot like the difference between where the mid-tier Big Ten teams are and where Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State are.”
➤ "Our licensing revenue at Wake Forest has tripled over the last six years. ... It's really important to us when you walk into a Lowe's Foods — one of our great partners — and in 50 different Lowe's stores you see a Pepsi end cap with a picture of Jake Dickert and a WF on it. That's brand extension." (link)
The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman writes on the uptick in international football games as Arizona State and Kansas tussled in London last Saturday. As far as other leagues’ plans to play across the pond, Big Ten COO Kerry Kenny explains: “There’s some benefit to the Big Ten diaspora with how many fans are across Europe and other areas of the world where obviously you want to meet your fans where they are and be strategic about how you do that. (NFL and other college games) are all data points that we need to study before figuring out whether or not just moving a game over there for the splashy headline of moving a game makes the most sense.” While the ACC doesn’t directly advocate for international games, it does help facilitate all neutral-site contests and coordinate logistics. ACC SVP for Football Michael Strickland adds: “We give them a lot of guidance of what their proposal should look like. If we feel like it’s worthy of being passed along, then more times than not we do because we want to be transparent with our membership.” (link)
North Alabama inaugurated Bank Independent Stadium by defeating Alcorn State on Saturday, and Lions AD Josh Looney remarked on the atmosphere: “What energy from this community. The amount of people that have been here a long time told me they had tears in their eyes at some point during this game — some told me multiple times during the game — which is really cool. I’ve been here five years and it’s amazing to see that. I can’t imagine the people that’ve been waiting five decades for this night, and it delivered.” (link); Check out the festivities outside the stadium leading up to kickoff. (link, link)
More from new UCLA AD Tim Harris with the California Post’s Ben Bolch as Harris says the key to financial sustainability is in securing a robust season-ticket base: “It’s why the Lakers were so successful because we started out sold out of season tickets, you know, every year. It is a huge relief when you have that going in because tickets are the portal to everything because a ticket is the ultimate expression of interest. If you can sell tickets, you can sell sponsorships. If you’re selling tickets, you’re gonna get social media engagement. If you’re selling tickets, donors are paying attention. It’s the ultimate expression.” (link)
Playfly has released its new Playfly Sports FanScore: The Premium Opportunity in College Sports, a new report built on a custom Vision Insights survey of collegiate premium attendees, paired with pricing and capacity research across the FBS, the NFL, and the NBA. It’s full of actionable data, including…
➤ 86% of college football fans and 91% of college basketball fans who have attended a collegiate game in a premium or hospitality area have also sat in premium seating at a pro event within the past two years.
➤ Premium college attendees are six years younger on average than non-premium attendees, and purchase rates barely move across income brackets. The older, high-income donor stereotype does not hold up.
➤ The jump from the best standard seat to the cheapest premium seat runs a median of +93% across the G6 and +19% across the P4. In the NFL it is -6%. Where the ladder has no middle rungs, fans do not climb.
➤ Top-quartile FBS programs grew all-sport ticket revenue 33.8% between 2016 and 2025. The bottom quartile grew 8.2%. (link)

The Illinois Board of Trustees approved a new six-year contract for Women’s Basketball HC Shauna Green that includes a $1.2M signing bonus and a four-year non-compete clause covering NCAA and WNBA teams, according to the Illini Inquirer's Jeremy Werner. The agreement increases Green's annual retention pay from $200K to $225K and raises her average annual salary by $117.5K across the guaranteed six years. The deal can extend up to 10 years—adding $50K in compensation per extension—if the program reaches four NCAA Tournaments over six years, and Werner notes: “The non-compete clause means Green isn't going anywhere for the next four seasons, allowing the Illini to continue to build on an amazing resurgence in Green's first four seasons, and she gets a big signing bonus and a solid annual pay bump in return.” (link)
Athletic departments routinely lose critical early weeks of a new coach’s tenure to unmanaged moving logistics, leaving incoming staff and business offices unnecessarily bogged down. Through its single-source partnership model, D1.relocation serves as an integrated Director of Relocation Operations (DORO) to streamline the entire staff onboarding cycle. From initial policy alignment and confidential family discovery within 24 hours of hire to flexible service tiers and turnkey carrier execution, departments can eliminate administrative drag while protecting transition budgets. Best of all, partnership infrastructure is delivered at zero institutional cost while generating a 0.2% giveback on closed real estate transactions directly to your department’s foundation or collective. DraftKings utilized machine learning to identify and target unprofitable customers with increased promotional incentives, according to a New York Times investigation by Alex Klavens, Walt Bogdanich, and Jenny Vrentas. The online gambling giant, which reported $8.7B in gross revenue and distributed roughly $3B in promotions last year, deployed an internal data science team to build an "elasticity" model that analyzed dozens of variables—including betting frequency, daily account balances, and loss-to-wager ratios—to isolate bettors most likely to respond to free bets and bonuses by losing more money. The platform then prioritized its promotional spend toward those elastic losers while simultaneously sidelining a separate data science project designed to build predictive models that would proactively flag customers exhibiting signs of problem gambling. Despite multiple former employees raising concerns over the predatory nature of the targeted incentives, DraftKings Chief Responsible Gaming Officer Lori Kalani defended the strategy: "It’s a marketing tool that every company out there uses. ... Customers who are betting within their means, are betting for entertainment and betting for fun. ... Shopping can be problematic for people." (link)

Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill joined the SportsWise Podcast with Gabe Feldman to discuss potential College Football Playoff expansion, conference-level governance, federal athletics legislation, the operational implications of athlete employee status and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ On supporting CFP expansion to 24 teams: "From a Sun Belt standpoint, we are absolutely for more access. If the CFP expands to 24, I really think that's good for our conference and that's really positive. And in a lot of ways it's good for college football. ... We need to make sure we understand how it impacts the regular season. We need to make sure we understand how it impacts our conference championship games. ... You don't want to drive down value, you want to make sure that the economics is right and that the math maths."
➤ On conference-level enforcement amid diminished NCAA control: "If the NCAA continues to lose a little bit of the authority and discretion that certainly we had governing some of these rules in the past, it is going to be important for conferences to step in. Whether it's because someone gets an injunction for some sort of gambling situation that you don't agree with as a conference, you don't think that individual should compete. Whether it's the professionalization issue. ... Having that governance kind of model there, I do think helps supplant some of those values that maybe the NCAA can't defend." (link)
Towson AD Steve Eigenbrot with an op-ed in Sports Business Journal, argues college athletics faces a "governance paradox" as regulatory authority shifts toward conferences while member institutions retain zero-sum incentives to maximize individual competitive advantages. Citing the SEC's legal dispute with LSU, alongside state-level tax exemptions for NIL payments in Arkansas, Eigenbrot believes conference commissioners must be granted broader executive authority—similar to professional sports leagues—to enforce spending discipline and preserve competitive balance in the absence of federal intervention: "The conference commissioner may not have been hired to govern the ecosystem. But without a national solution, there may be no one else positioned to try. Perhaps conference commissioners really are our next best hope to save us from ourselves." (link)
Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek to ESPN’s Taylor McGregor prior to yesterday’s football game responds to the resolution by the Arkansas Board of Trustees to review the state of competitiveness of Razorback athletics: “I don’t have any because I have yet to talk to the board of trustees or the president about what this statement means.” (link); Hogs Football HC Ryan Silverfield earlier this week in a radio interview: “When I got here, the salary — I hate to say that, I shouldn’t say that — but the amount of money for the 2026 roster was already set. It is what it is, and there was no changing that. Some of these schools will say, ‘Okay, hey, we’ll keep raising the money for this roster even though we spent money we didn’t have.’ Whereas we say, ‘Okay, here’s the money you have set aside and that’s what you have.” (link)
Meanwhile, Arkansas Men’s Basketball HC John Calipari voiced his support for Razorbacks AD Hunter Yurachek, remarking that “Hunter's been a great partner and given us tools to go out and get the No. 1 recruiting class in the country, and our postseason success has been there because of his support. … [Yurachek] has also had to make some tough decisions, like reseating, which has generated more revenue so we can participate in revenue sharing at the highest level. With these type of decisions, Hunter has been unbelievable in making sure this university and athletic department is stable moving forward." (link)
Kentucky AD J Batt updates KSR’s Jack Pilgrim on the Cats jersey patch progress for hoops: “What I’d say is we’ve had a tremendous interest. Part of what we get to do, because we have so much momentum, is be a little bit choosy. So it’s so important to us that, particularly on that sacred piece of cloth, that we have the right partner.” (link)
Arizona State AD Graham Rossini to JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher before yesterday’s kick with Kansas in London on leveraging football performance for commercial momentum: "It definitely is a catalyst for more. Over the last three or four years, certainly since [HC] Kenny [Dillingham] got here and throughout kind of our maturation as a department, we're just trying to stack those wins. We're just trying to build this momentum where there's a trend line and there's a progression to how we operate. ... The CFP and the Big 12 Championship in football [gave us] a good sense of what we're capable of. Now we’ve got to repeat that. We’ve got to continue to go down the road of bringing more people in, generating resources, finding these connection points that we're reinvesting into the talent in our space and then start to do that with more regularity.” (link)
Clemson lecturer/College Sports Research Institute Executive Director Chris Corr argues in a Sportico op-ed that labor organizers seeking collective bargaining in college sports should target athlete agents rather than relying on short-tenured student-athletes. With post-House settlement revenue sharing and NIL elevating college compensation, Corr points out that agencies hold a long-term economic incentive to stabilize the market. Unlike professional unions such as the NFLPA and WNBPA that regulate representatives, uncertified college agents can take 20-30% commissions, though the Protect College Sports Act proposes capping fees at 5%. Corr adds: "Players should not be expected to build that infrastructure alone. The people already sitting beside them in living rooms, negotiating their compensation, evaluating transfer opportunities and advising them whether to remain in college or turn professional may be the most underutilized constituency in the college-athlete labor movement. If organizers want collective bargaining to move from an argument about what college sports ought to become to an institution capable of actually changing it, they should stop merely trying to engage and mobilize the athletes. They should start organizing the agents." (link)
Fox Sports broadcaster Tim Brando believes the role of the Sports Information Director has changed, telling Cellini & Domino of Atlanta’s 680 The Fan: “What has happened is the sports information people used to be respected by their head coaches. And now, they’re not. They all have operations people. The SIDs have to go through the operations guys to get close to the coaches themselves. Years ago, we had SIDs that were legends. Tennessee, you had Bud Ford, one of the most respected men in sports information history. Roger Valdiserri at Notre Dame. Paul Manasseh at LSU. I could run through the litany of big names that were SIDs. Then suddenly the schools started to pay less, hire children basically—kids coming right out that had been associates and assistants. And now they’re all scared of the coaches for the most part.” (link)
Former Colorado Senior Assoc. AD for Business Operations/CFO Cory Hilliard admitted to misusing funds related to his administration of the university’s Nike Elite program in an internal university audit prior to his hiring as USA Swimming CFO in December 2025, per USA Today’s Brent Schrotenboer. Hilliard faces criminal charges for allegedly overspending his annual Nike gear allotment by $9,500 from 2022-25, taking advantage of his administrative access to place 59 personal orders, totaling $6,011 over his allotted limit in FY25 alone. Former Buffaloes AD Rick George alerted auditors to the discrepancy in July 2025, precipitating Hilliard's departure from the university and his subsequent resignation from USA Swimming following an August 2026 arrest. When asked by auditors why he overspent his designated allotment, Hilliard said he did so because he had access to the excess funds and it was an error and a misjudgment. He then said, “I did it. I admit it.” (link)
Georgia AD Josh Brooks received the maximum allowable contract bonus of $400K after last season, $200K for UGA finishing in the Learfield Directors’ Cup top 10, $100K for all Bulldog teams finishing with four-year APR scores of 930 or greater and $100K for achieving an overall average student GPA of 3.25-or-higher (finished at 3.28 overall). That’s according to an amendment to the extended deal Brooks signed back on December 24, 2025, per the Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer. (link, link)

Prediction markets Polymarket and Kalshi are embedding themselves into traditional news media through data-sharing agreements with Dow Jones, Substack, CNN, CNBC, and Fox Corp, with market data now integrated across 25% of the top communications companies in the S&P 500. Wired’s Katie Knibbs points out that “financial services companies have jumped into the media sector before, most obviously Bloomberg, which initially focused on providing market data and financial analytics before expanding to include journalism products.” Knibbs also observes that as regulatory battles continue over whether prediction markets operate as financial exchanges or gambling platforms, both companies are leveraging editorial distribution, podcasting, and media partnerships to boost public credibility and diversify revenue streams, as evidenced by Polymarket Founder Shayne Coplan bringing on Nate Silver as an adviser and Meta evaluating prediction market features. Kalshi spokesperson Jack Such: "Given the forecasting success of the markets, it's clear there is informational value. And three out of four users don't trade, which suggests the informational use case is popular enough to be taken very seriously." (link)
The share of the high school graduating class of 2025 immediately enrolling in college increased slightly across all economic backgrounds, according to data released Thursday by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center.
