“As we get this new athletic director, remember that perfection is just impossible, and the support and emotional endorsement for, we really want you to do the best job, we see the great job you're doing, we give you pats on the back for it, deserves that.”
Jim Hackett
Former Michigan AD/Ford CEO to the Detroit News’ Angelique Chengelis on grace needed for UM’s athletic director
Featured Opportunity...
Former Michigan AD and Ford CEO Jim Hackett spoke with The Detroit News' Angelique Chengelis about the evolving complexities of college athletics administration as the university searches for AD Warde Manuel's successor. Key takeaways…
➤ Necessary grace for outgoing AD Warde Manuel: "When people are driving their Ford car and it breaks and I'm in charge, I'm accountable for that. But there’s north of 300K people that are directly contributing to the performance of the company, and you need to be humble to know that one person is accountable for everything, but they probably are not the reason that something broke down all the time. ... As we get this new athletic director, remember that perfection is just impossible, and the support and emotional endorsement for, we really want you to do the best job, we see the great job you're doing, we give you pats on the back for it, deserves that."
➤ "The trustees I reported to in business were not randomly accepted into the room based on popular vote. They were sorted for whether they're the best fit for what we need. ... And then the second dilemma is, were they selected so they work well together? ... So that really disappointed me when I started to interact with Michigan. I didn’t realize this. And that isn't an indictment about the Regents. I like them all, but it's competing."
➤ "I'm a big believer in a phrase that somebody used: 'You love them ‘til you can't.' What it means is, you invest in their development. Did we invest in Warde's development over the last 10 years? Shame on the university if it didn't. That's a way that you create extension of time, is by people getting better in the job, and that's what I would offer as the path." (link)
Former UAB Football HC Bill Clark publicly expressed his interest in the university's vacant AD position during an appearance on The Coach Bill Clark Show…
➤ "I would definitely entertain it. There'd be a lot of things that would have to happen. My whole thing was if enough people wanted something like that, then I would listen. And other than that, I'm not gonna go ask for it. I'm not campaigning. I would answer and listen. And see how could I help?"
➤ On the traits needed in the new AD: "[The next AD] should be somebody that is a servant to the students and to the coaches. When you talk about servant leadership, what does that look like? … I was an athletic director, and what I would say to the coaches, 'My number one job is to make you look good.' Now you've got certain rules you gotta follow, moral rules and how you treat the kids, but my job is to make you successful. What do I need to do? And when you didn't get that question asked, what does it take for me to help you understand? Of course, everybody would love an unlimited supply of money, but how do I treat you? How do I treat these players?" (link)
Former UCLA AD Dan Guerrero tells The California Post's Ben Bolch he has adopted the unofficial role of therapist for active college sports leaders struggling to navigate the chaotic transition to a revenue-sharing and transfer portal-driven environment. Guerrero on counseling colleagues through the massive industry shifts: "It's very hard for them to put their arms around what's happening right now and they're struggling in so many respects and I saw that coming late in my career. I saw a lot of these things beginning to emanate. I didn't expect they would be to this degree this soon, but it's happened and everyone has to adapt and adjust to the reality, like it or not.” He adds of the model remaining unchanged for Olympic athletes: “I said you have to hold onto that because we got into this thing because we wanted to provide access and opportunity for student-athletes to pursue their aspirations and their dreams and still do that. It’s a different environment for sure, but fundamentally, all of that is still the same.” (link)
New Michigan State AD Dan Bartholomae might not start his new job until the end of the month, but he already understands that he has an opportunity to help the Spartans achieve an even higher ceiling of success, per the Detroit Free Press’ Chris Solari. “Anybody who I spoke to (about MSU) just always spoke about the great people and also the possibilities. And when I see a place where maybe we’re not tapping into the possibilities, I’m like, man, I’m running to that. And so it’s awesome to be here.” More…
➤ On the $500M Spartan Stadium renovation plans: “We gotta create the best fan experience in the country. We’ve got great training amenities, some that can be improved. But we got a great start there. We need to create fan amenities. We need premiums. And it’s all those things I talked about, driving revenue through sustained streams. And there’s no secret, we built it in with the (basketball/hockey) arena in Kalamazoo. That starts with premium and a great fan experience, and that’s needed. And hopefully, that’s coming.”
➤ His task of recruiting donors: “Everybody knows we need to generate revenue, right? You lead with vision. And I think one of the things we all did – not just me, but we all did – at Western [Michigan] was that we created a vision, and then people bought into it. So that’s how you found new people. These people were already excited about college athletics and about Western Michigan University; they just hadn’t been inspired by a vision. And that’s why again, in my speech, you didn’t hear me talk a lot about we’re gonna do this, we’re gonna do that with revenue. What you heard me say is, ‘We’re gonna have a bold vision, it’s gonna be aspirational, and we’re gonna ask you to join us.’” (link)
Former Ole Miss Football student-athlete Dae’Quan Wright was waived by the Cleveland Browns & intends to re-enter the college game with LSU if he clears NFL waivers. Browns HC Todd Monken over the weekend: "Man, isn't this s--- crazy? I don't even know what to say. I wondered why Lane Kiffin reached out to me a week ago; now I know. I didn't call him back. I guess I should have.” (link)
Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey agrees with Monday Morning QB’s Albert Greer, who believes the NFL should be doing everything it can to support college football. Dickey: “Over the last few years, I’ve asked others in the industry … When will NFL get involved because at some point it will impact them right? It will be interesting to see if the NFL steps in. Maybe that’s what we need … it is the greatest league in the country (world?) and why not add another cook with expertise to the kitchen. I know many feel we could fix this without federal legislation and I don’t disagree … but the problem, as I see it, is a lack of unity across industry. Self-interest and self-preservation has led to insanity. We overcomplicated this. Lost our why, became transactional, courts and lawsuits determining our fate … Not an easy problem to fix, but I believe solutions exist.” (link)
The Pac-12 will utilize dedicated AI cameras and live microphones to broadcast in-game audio from head coaches and players during the upcoming season, aiming to establish the conference as an innovative media property, according to JohnCanzano.com’s namesake publisher. More, including this from Fresno State AD Garrett Klassy on prioritizing the College Football Playoff through flex scheduling: "Everything that we talk about in our meetings from a competitive standpoint is, how do we get our teams in the CFP? How do we get our basketball teams in the NCAA tournament? Time will tell if it works or not." (link)
Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders recently sat for a deposition in a federal lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court in Nebraska by graphic designer Alan Tipp, who alleges Sanders, Prime Time Enterprises, and SMAC Entertainment fraudulently induced him into signing away the rights to his 2011 "Prime" and "Truth" logo designs, according to Front Office Sports' Ben Axelrod. The complaint states that SMAC representative Sam Morini pressured Tipp to surrender the intellectual property in December 2022 by promising him a role on the marketing team, a Nike merchandise partnership, and a contract to design an exclusive sunglasses line. SMAC subsequently dismissed Tipp before launching a Blenders sunglasses line bearing the "Prime" logo that generated nearly $5M in its first three days, while simultaneously securing "PRIME21" trademarks with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Tipp is currently seeking to void the 2022 agreement, cancel the active trademarks, and secure damages exceeding $75K ahead of an October 13 status conference. (link)
Hawaii has signed Football HC Timmy Chang to a five-year contract extension through January 2031. (link)
Can sales taxes save Louisiana’s college sports programs? That’s the question the Louisiana Illuminator’s Piper Hutchinson seeks to answer by examining a new proposed measure state lawmakers hope will be a gamechanger for institutions facing a budget crunch during college sports’ new revenue-sharing era. State Sen. Stewart Cathey’s Act 374 would grant every state university the opportunity to set up an economic development district. To this point, only LSU, Southern and Louisiana have been allowed to do so. Louisiana Tech AD Ryan Ivey: “If you think about the economic impact that athletic departments have on their local economy, how are we capitalizing on those potential tax dollars that are out there and the economic development that’s being driven by the athletics departments?” University of Louisiana System President Rick Gallot said he anticipates each of its schools will eventually set up an economic development district. An Arizona State hockey student-athlete collapsed during an outdoor exercise on the morning of Aug. 20 and remains hospitalized, according to a university statement. ASU VP of Media Relations Chris Fiscus declined to identify the player but stated: “The university offers its support for the student-athlete, their family and all of our student-athletes during this difficult time.” Fiscus also declined to answer whether the workout was sanctioned by the team. We offer our best wishes to the student-athlete for a full and speedy recovery. (link)
Continuing its comprehensive evaluation of the coaching market, Collegiate Sports Connect has released a new Coach Intel report benchmarking guaranteed compensation for Division I Men's Soccer assistant coaches. The analysis highlights a pronounced Power 4 standard, with the median assistant salary ($74,953) clearly outpacing the lower tiers, while top-tier assistants in the 75th percentile ($91,350) rapidly approach the six-figure mark as institutions invest heavily to retain elite recruiting and developmental talent. Below the autonomous leagues, the landscape displays a distinctly separated salary spread, a stark contrast to the head coaching market, with the Group of 6 median ($64,740) representing a nearly $20K premium over the overall D1 Non-FBS baseline ($45K). Lots more on the full report. (link)
Hudl and Dropback announce a strategic partnership to assist college football GMs with building more competitive, cost-efficient rosters in the revenue-sharing era. Hudl IQ utilizes AI, computer vision, and data collection to transform football video into high-frequency event, tracking and physical data. Starting today, that data is now available and synced daily directly in Dropback, where GMs can use it to value athletes in dollars, forecast roster spend and model athlete acquisition scenarios. ➤ The NFL’s New England Patriots recently opened the doors to the league’s largest football-focused space, the $95M, 160K-square foot New Balance Athletics Center, next to Gillette Stadium. Per SBJ’s Bret McCormick, the first floor is devoted to player experience, including an industrial, full-sized kitchen attached to the player dining room; a locker room; and a 15K-square foot weight room, with 3,700-square feet devoted to hydrotherapy and recovery. The second floor consists of meeting rooms – the size and layout of those is geared toward individual position groups – and coaches’ offices (23 for coaches and 15 for scouting), while also featuring a virtual walkthrough room, a full-width, 20-yard-long turf field with hash marks facing a large videoboard. New Balance and the Patriots didn’t have a relationship prior to the company agreeing to partner on the new facility. The New Balance Athletics Center was designed by Populous and built by Suffolk Construction, the same duo that designed and built the North End Zone addition to Gillette Stadium, which opened in 2023. ➤ The Portland Fire and Thorns have built a $150M, first-of-its-kind dual-sport facility for the WNBA and NWSL teams. Front Office Sports shares some of the images of the HQ, which features two full-size soccer pitches, two full-size basketball courts, a gym, sauna, Pilates studio, dedicated family spaces and content creation studios. Coordinating team meals means managing a lot of moving parts, from practice and game-day timelines to travel departures and constant schedule changes. That gets even harder on the road, when you’re ordering in unfamiliar cities and trying to make sure food arrives where and when the team needs it.
ezCater helps simplify those logistics by giving teams one place to find local restaurants, order individually packaged meals, and schedule delivery wherever food is needed — whether that’s a hotel, a meet site, or a bus pickup on the road.
That flexibility has been especially valuable for Jacksonville State University during multi-day trips in unfamiliar locations.
“It has been beneficial because we’ll travel to unfamiliar cities and towns for games and be there for 48 to 72 hours. I’m not familiar with who takes catering orders locally or if they’ll deliver. ezCater has been really helpful on that side of things.”
– Matthew Boone, Head Coach of Track & Field, Jacksonville State University

Vanderbilt AD Candice Storey Lee joined The Deal podcast with Bloomberg’s Jason Kelly and former MLB star Alex Rodriguez to discuss the athletic department's transformation since her becoming AD in 2020. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ "I think the most important thing is that we changed the narrative by first changing how we thought about ourselves internally. ... The reality is that as an institution, we had not always consistently invested in athletics here. ... I've always felt like if given a chance, we could thrive, but we had not given ourselves a chance. And so our new chancellor unlocks resources to give us a chance.”
➤ "We used to say come to Vanderbilt and instead of a four-year decision, make a 40-year decision. Well, now with the ability to transfer multiple places, you know, I tell our staff it might be a four-month decision but for that four months, we're going to show you why being a part of Vanderbilt is going to change the trajectory for you for years and years to come. ... It's hard to turn down a world-class degree and you're also getting NIL support, and you're also going to be a part of this network for life, like, and you have a chance to win a national championship."
➤ On the difficulty of securing donor investments without a regulated system: "The reality is that we're sort of mimicking professional sports in some ways and don't have the things that give the framework that you're talking about. ... If we don't insert some stability so I can show you real outcomes … then you're not going to want to give." (link)
Ohio State AD Ross Bjork understands what he’s up against in attempting to make the Schottenstein Center a better venue for basketball, per Lettermen Row’s Spencer Holbrook, who notes the effort starts by fixing attendance issues and addressing some cosmetic issues with the almost-30-year-old facility. Key notes…
➤ Bjork: “The Schottenstein Center was built as a multi-purpose building. So it’s not necessarily the best for basketball, but it’s not necessarily best when there’s 5K people in there. But, man, when there’s a big concert or a big game in there, it’s packed. And we need all those seats. It’s just the average that sort of brings the atmosphere to where people are like, ‘oh, this could be better.’ We have a better lighting system that we put in last year. We are putting in a new scoreboard, center-hung video board, new LED. We’ll be able to activate more. It’ll be a lot brighter in there. And then, look, we’ve just got to get more people in the building. Part of that’s winning, right? And I think people are going to see a better team.”
➤ As far as marketing the men’s program, the Buckeyes plan to utilize targeted ads online, the football season and other tools in hopes of yielding a better atmosphere inside the Schott in 2026-27. Bjork: “We’re using the teams better. We’re using more data analytics from a marketing standpoint where we have a lot more customer information about people that are interested in that. … So our data analytic piece is a lot more dialed in where hopefully that can mean better marketing and better attendance. Ticket packages that are going to be rolled out here in the next couple weeks or months ahead. Using the football stadium as a way to broadcast to the basketball, things like that. … So better lighting, better music, better atmosphere, better attendance.” More. (link)
NC State AD Boo Corrigan joined the Wolfpack Weekly Radio Show to discuss the athletic department's culture, the upcoming football season and the overarching necessity of revenue generation…
➤ On evaluating team culture and body language rather than specific play calls: "I'm sure everyone out here, when you run the ball, wishes they'd pass it. When you pass it, you wish they ran it. I'm not watching any of that, but what I am watching is how guys are and how they get up. ... When the other team scores, what's the interaction on the sidelines, right? ... You need people to stay up. You need people to feel optimistic about what's going on."
➤ Prioritizing donor relations and revenue generation amid the shifting collegiate landscape: "It's so much about revenue generation. I mean, that's what the name of the game is at this point, and it's not something to shy away from. ... Whether we like what it is or not. It's our reality. So if it's our reality, let's be the best that we can be."
➤ Creating community events around Carter-Finley Stadium and the Lenovo Center: "The goal of athletics is to bring people together. We're doing this here, and you celebrate the university. Those are two great things. So we needed more space to do this.” (link)
Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier joined College.town’s Anthony Grassi to discuss his approach to maintaining the university's academic mission amid an increasingly professional landscape, the necessity of exploring alternative revenue streams, including private equity, moving Olympic sports to the Horizon League and more. Here are the main points…
➤ Balancing academic standards with increasing commercialization: "We are quasi-professional. Okay. So we have professional components that we have adopted because of House and others. They need to have a commercial feel to it. We need to come up with a funding model that supports it but not to the downfall of higher education."
➤ "If we're going to have rev share and NIL opportunities and other types of things that need more revenue, we, one, should take a look at operations, private equity and private capital might be one. There's others that we would say, ‘Hey, we need to have innovation that drives revenue and it can't be strictly philanthropic.’ It has to be some engine that continues to feed the dragon."
➤ Financial savings of moving Olympic sports to the Horizon League: "We're well over a million on just a reduction of expense because of where we're going. We're not going to the great state of Massachusetts. We're not going to New York State, right? ... If you take a look at the Horizon footprint, they're in cities. They're in footprints where we're not the outlier anymore. We're part of that process. Our fan bases can travel via car and other to get to these competitions. It just changes the whole mentality." (link)
Louisville AD Josh Heird remarked earlier in the week that "in order for football programs to have success, yes, the financial component is an important one these days, but it's not the only one. You have players sitting at your tables, ask them. I think every one of them will tell you, yes, the financial component is important, but the other variable that's really, really important is knowing that they have coaches and people in the program that are going to ensure that they're successful. We have that, and that is why we want to keep (Football HC) Jeff Brohm here for a long time. As I wrote down here, I said, this man's not complicated. He's easy to describe. He's a great person, and he's a great football coach. And I know a few of you in this room realize that we, the two of us, had some disagreements this spring. But I think we learned both – I think we learned two things. One, both of us can be pretty stubborn. But we also learned that we are both fighting for this university and for this football program to be great, and I will never hold that against him or anybody else.” (link)
Dartmouth Executive Assoc. AD for Administration Taurian Houston joined College.town’s Kristen Eargle on The Career Hustle to discuss coach development, athletic compliance legislation, roster building within the Ivy League and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ On leading the development and execution of quarterly recruiting summits to maximize institutional advantages against Ivy League peers: "We understand that we don't have the same institutional brand as a Harvard, Yale or Princeton. So, in order for us to be able to do things differently and still win at the level that we're expected to win, we have to be different. This was something that [AD Mike Harrity] brought to my work product and said, ‘hey, we need you to work on this.’ And so working with our coaches to say, ‘okay, what are the things that are preventing you from being able to attract, identify, or retain top talent?’ And so we go about getting feedback from them.”
➤ On evaluating head coaching candidates as program CEOs and educators: "We want our coaches to be the CEOs of their program. We understand being a head coach is more than just the X's and O's, more than just leading your team. ... There's donors, there's managing rosters, there's managing staff, there's managing other personnel. And so being the CEO means that you have that mindset of execution, you have that mindset of business. You have that mindset of, ‘you know what? This is my entity, this is my baby, and I want to make sure I'm leading it at a high level.’" More from Houston. (link)
As reported earlier in the week, Syracuse has struck a deal with Progressive Insurance that will place Progressive's logo on the field at the JMA Wireless Dome between the goal lines and 20-yard lines beginning this season. Now you can have a look. (link)
The Big 12-Monster Energy logo has been painted on the field at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. See for yourself. (link)
SwimSwam’s Braden Keith reports “Former University of Kentucky head swim coach Lars Jorgensen has settled a lawsuit accusing him of sexual harassment and sexual assault that was brought by two of his former swimmers in U.S. District Court. Terms of the agreement were not released, though it was dismissed with prejudice, meaning the plaintiffs cannot file the same lawsuit again. The settlement does not affect the claims against the other defendants in the case, which are the University of Kentucky, and former Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart. Former head swim coach Gary Conelly was dismissed as a defendant in 2024.” (link)

➤ Check out the progress at Old Dominion’s Ellmer Family Baseball Complex, still on track to be ready for opening day. (link)
➤ Upcoming changes to Southern Miss baseball’s Pete Taylor Park are still pending approval, but could include a redesigned grand entrance, a new indoor practice facility, a clearer walking path around the perimeter of the stadium, a “Roost Rugrat Stadium” beyond the outfield for the youngest fans, additional seating down the third base line and shade covers above several areas.
