“This year, our ticket revenue will cover somewhere around 50% of our total football spend. And so, I certainly again understand the quality, emotion and dynamic at play. But if we don't find a way to change those trend lines, we won't be able to sustain this program as a program that expects to go out and win championships year after year after year.”
Roger Denny
Oklahoma AD to the OU Daily on how and why the renovation plans for Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium could include a reduction in capacity

Following a heartbreaking last second loss for Western Michigan at Michigan last night, the Big Ten explained and confirmed the official’s call of one second remaining on the clock after a hail mary before the Wolverines subsequently prevailed. MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher in response: “I commend Western Michigan for the outstanding effort and a well-played game, and I offer my congratulations to Michigan. I also appreciate the collaborative efforts of the Big Ten office and its prompt response in reviewing the play and providing the requested clarification.” (link)
Oklahoma boss Roger Denny updates on potential renovation plans for Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium that many have dubbed the “Palace Project” & could include a reduction in capacity for the venue: “When I tell people who are evaluating that project, I am in no way telling people we aren't doing that project, and so to the extent there is any confusion about that, I want to clear that up. That project is going to happen. The question is just what it's (going to) look like.” More from Denny to OU Daily: “I understand the difficulty that's associated with a reseating in the stadium, but at the same time, we have to make sure that we are staying economically viable because the one thing that we can't accept here is falling behind. …This year, our ticket revenue will cover somewhere around 50% of our total football spend. And so, I certainly again understand the quality, emotion and dynamic at play. But if we don't find a way to change those trend lines, we won't be able to sustain this program as a program that expects to go out and win championships year after year after year.” (link)
The latest from Utah AD Mark Harlan on the Big 12 Today podcast: "We're in a very disruptive period. ... I think you develop calluses and you develop a skill set and you surround yourself with people that really can help you with chaos and manage change." More on consolidating commercial operations under the new Crimson Brand Partners umbrella: "They're also going to take over stadium management which heretofore had been kind of scattered at Utah. ... This is now on campus. This is now one big company. You got to adapt to these times." (link)
Oregon State AD Kevin Griffin with the Corvallis Gazette-Times’ Les Gehrett on the importance of home attendance & TV ratings: “I think from a spiritual standpoint, it's important for the rest of this country to see that Oregon State is still here. They went through this incredible trauma when the Pac-12 dissolved, and we need to show the rest of the country that we're still here. So we need the stands to be full, and we need folks to see that on television all across the country, that Oregon State is still here. That's the reason for me, is to make sure that we make a statement that we're still here, and not only are we here, we're going to take the fight to the fight, and we're going to compete, and we're going to win. It's a statement more than anything, more than the finances. It's a statement.” (link)
More from Appalachian State AD Doug Gillin during a conversation on the Mind Your Business podcast. On raising competitive standards in the Sun Belt: "We need to get more competitive across the board and that will lead to more television dollars when we get back into negotiations. That means more teams in the NCAA Tournament in every sport. If you look across our platform, pretty much [a] one bid league in most of our sports. I think the challenge for all of us is to invest enough, be competitive enough to get more teams in what is an increasingly less accessible NCAA tournament for all sports. … When you look at the Power 4 versus a Group of Six and how much access you get and who gets in and who doesn't get in. … I want it to be more competitive, and certainly we need to do our part." Army West Point AD Tom Theodorakis joined the NACMA Timeout Podcast with Fairfield Assoc. VP/Deputy AD Zach Dayton to detail the academy's 20-year preservation partnership with USAA, media rights and apparel agreement planning, the Athletic Center for Excellence and more. D1.takeaways…
➤ Structuring a comprehensive preservation partnership with USAA rather than a traditional sponsorship: "The key elements of specifically this partnership really start with branding opportunities. ... Throughout the stadium you'll see USAA signage, whether it's digital or static. We included what we're calling preservation designations, various naming opportunities within our facilities. So, it's Michie Stadium keeping the name but having 'preserved by USAA.’ It also has elements of facility enhancements and financing. It was a multi-prong partnership where it touched on specific assets, but also opportunities for the USAA to invest in our department and the amazing men and women cadets here at the Academy.”
➤ Proactive inventory planning across media rights and apparel agreements: "When we were negotiating with Learfield, we kind of carved out these spaces. ... Talk about logos on the field, talk about specific branding around the stadium, talk about jersey patches, talk about potentially even preservation rights and what that would look like. ... When we were talking through with Nike about our new apparel deal, we also brought up the idea of sponsor patches with the idea that ‘hey, this could be something that’s available to us in the future.’ ... Our concept together [with USAA] was how do we just bundle these assets together, do it in a way that's with a partner that we trust, that we value."
➤ On the vision for the Athletic Center for Excellence: "The original part of [the Michie Stadium Preservation Project] included the Athletic Center for Excellence. That project had to be removed from the original concepts because, through COVID, costs got too high. ... The Athletic Center for Excellence is rooted in this idea of building community within our coaches, being a leadership laboratory. ... An opportunity for recruiting and engagement. ... It's an opportunity to tell our story. I think there's interactive ways, especially nowadays with technology to have that first floor be a place where coaches can bring recruits, graduates can come back here at the Academy and learn more about what we're doing." ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit’s dog, Peter, continues to grow in popularity. The ‘Peter Fan Club’ store has officially opened. This pop-up style set up sells Peter-themed apparel and will follow the College GameDay crew across the country this season. Check out the Baton Rouge version. (link)
The New York Post’s Ben Bolch digs into the attendance numbers at USC football games. The Trojans announced a crowd of 51,144 for the season opener against San Jose State, followed by 53,014 for the game against Fresno State on Friday evening. Scanned tickets were 35,585 and 45,833, respectively, for the first two games. Bolch also reports that average attendance dipped 71,571 during the 2024 season to 67,783 in 2025. (link)
How did Nebraska manage to build the first Power 4 women’s flag football program in less than a year? According to The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman, the process all started three months before the school announced the sport’s addition with Huskers’ AD Troy Dannen approaching project lead/NU Assoc. AD of Financial Reporting Jami Hagedorn to have her “run point on everything from hiring coaches and identifying a playing venue to learning the rules of the game, how to log stats and operate a scoreboard.” Here’s more of what you need to know…
➤ Hagedorn traveled to the NFL headquarters as part of her educational mission. Ten months later, the school had secured 16 full-scholarship athletes for its inaugural roster and hired former Ottawa (KS) (NAIA) Women’s Flag Football HC Liz Sowers and AC Katie Sowers, who teamed up to engineer five consecutive NAIA national titles with the Braves. The current intention is to target a competitive kickoff in spring 2027, a full year ahead of the program’s original timeline.
➤ Tapping experienced leaders who could lead the way was key in accelerating the program-building process from no coaches and players to competing in live games in less than a year. Liz Sowers on the paradigm shift of bringing high-level flag football to a major collegiate platform: "The legitimacy that Nebraska brings and is showing to flag football is huge. You have a lot of players who are coming in who are not used to being treated with respect and as a real sport. ... Being a new sport at an institution like this, we have to prove that we deserve to be up there. And that’s what we intend to do." More. (link)
In the latest edition of The Career Hustle, Rice Assoc. AD for External Relations Tyler Muse sits down with College.town’s Kristen Eargle to discuss his path through athletic administration and his approach to driving fan engagement. He also talks about his efforts at Houston to revamp the men's basketball pregame experience at the Fertitta Center before transitioning to Rice to work under then-AD Tommy McClelland. That and more…
➤ How former Western Kentucky/current Ohio State AD Ross Bjork inspired Muse’s path: "He made a huge impression on me. The way he fought for me as a student-athlete to get that SLR waiver... I decided I wanted to be in his chair. I wanted to work on the administration side. I want to be an athletic director one day because I want to be the one who fights for the student-athletes."
➤ Collaborating with former LSU Gymnastics HC D-D Breaux to build an intimidating environment: "She wanted to make Pete Maravich Assembly Center into one of the most intimidating [places to compete]. ... We added the band playing right after a huge moment. … We added a DJ there the first year, which a DJ at the time I don't think was really thought of as a gymnastics [element], but it was actually a phenomenal addition."
➤ Establishing new game-day traditions for Houston men's basketball: "Where it was when I started in 2019 is night and day compared to what it is now. ... We took the pregame, we added a tunnel sequence that was really cool. We created tradition with the court projection and the song that we used... We added an MC that would tell the fans to start the lights. We founded a student section there called ‘The Cage’." (link)
Take a look at how historic Wrigley Field has been readied for high-profile women’s volleyball matches tonight between Nebraska & Missouri, as well as Kentucky & Penn State. Pretty amazing. (link, link, link)
EA Sports College Football 27 debuted at No. 2 on Circana's July sales chart behind Call of Duty: Black Ops II, per SBJ’s Jason Wilson, who notes the game would have captured the top position if trackers combined individual purchases with the EA Sports MVP Bundle 2026. While sales remain strong, Newzoo Director of Market Intelligence Manu Rosier says the title has recorded a 61% drop in playtime compared to the 2024 release, with monthly active players plummeting 66% from 5.42M to 1.86M. The July data also highlighted a broader market shift as physical software sales crashed to a record-low $85M due in part to Sony’s decision to phase out disc production. (link)
Citing data from The Wall Street Journal showing the enrollment of Northern students at Southern public institutions has nearly doubled since the early 2000s, Esquire’s Paul Pabst explores a trend where parents are steering their high schoolers toward Southern sports-heavy universities and willingly absorbing tuition costs—often pulling from savings or retirement funds—to secure a personal "Do-Over" experience centered around SEC football, warm climates and real estate purchases near campus. The cultural migration underscores a growing divide between traditional Northern private institutions and prominent Southern brand-name programs, with parents prioritizing lifestyle amenities and athletics culture alongside affordability. "This may all sound like a bit much, but as long as you’re going to drain half your retirement account to pay for your kid’s college, why not get yourself a second shot? After all, that is the reality. ... To be fair, most families are genuinely trying to find the best educational fit for their kids. Lifestyle has just become a more important factor. That’s not crazy: The fact that education isn’t just about class is one of college’s greatest revelations, right? Which is another reason the bougie schools up north are getting challenged hard by the Red Solo Cup–and–Visor colleges down south.” (link)
Meta’s recent $18B settlement over allegations that Facebook and Instagram contribute to addictive use among young people serves as a cautionary signal for sportsbooks like DraftKings and FanDuel, prediction markets and high-engagement apps facing growing product-design scrutiny, per Sportico’s Michael McCann. The agreement requires Meta to pay billions over 10 years, while instituting structural safety controls, including two-hour daily time caps; night-mode blackouts; muted notifications during school hours; and hidden "likes,” that privacy legal experts consider a broad precedent for emerging tech and digital consumer platforms. While legal challenges against social media focus on minors and sportsbooks serve adults aged 18- or 21-and-older, plaintiffs in states such as Pennsylvania are already pursuing similar negligence and design-defect claims against betting apps for using gamified interfaces and push notifications to drive compulsive behavior. Harvard Law School Professor Leah Plunkett highlighted the legal implications of holding platforms accountable for engagement-driven designs, noting the settlement “sends a huge warning shot across the bow for any AI or other emerging tech company” that they could also face the prospect of paying enormous amounts of money to settle claims over how they push boundaries. After all the drama this week, late last night LSU decided not to roster NFL-back-to-college players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris for today’s kick against Clemson. However, ESPN’s Pete Thamel notes: “They could potentially be added later in the year, as both are enrolled in school. LSU has 103 players on the roster submitted, and that leaves them two spots.” (link)
USA Today’s Mitchell Northam suggests Duke AD Nina King could be in the mix to replace WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, who is retiring at the end of the calendar year. (link)
Iowa AD Beth Goetz’s signing of a new contract extension through January 2032 signifies her long-term commitment to the Hawkeyes, per the Des Moines Register’s Tyler Tachman. Goetz: “There’s something different and unique about Iowa for me. The opportunity to be able to continue to lead this team and be a part of such a great community is something that was really exciting.” More…
➤ Now planning to lead Iowa into the foreseeable future, Goetz will help guide major facility projects such as renovations to Carver-Hawkeye Arena and Finkbine Golf Course, while navigating the broader shift in modern collegiate sports around player eligibility and revenue sharing. On rethinking long-term planning in today's environment: “At least maybe for most of our lifetimes, those things (strategic plans) were like five, 10 years long, right? And now I think you can have sort of a strategic direction. … Where do you want to head? Because the how you’re going to get there is going to look a bit different. So you can still solidify, I think, your mission and your values and those types of things. But you've got to be really nimble in your methods, because of the ever-changing environment.”
➤ As for her overarching vision for the future of Iowa Athletics: “I would say we want to create a competitive environment in a sustainable way that continues to serve both our student-athletes and allows us to develop meaningful relationships with our fans and community. How you do that’s going to be developed and nuanced over time as the landscape changes, and as what’s important in Iowa changes. But I think that’s really what the overall goal and focus is. From month-to-month, and sometimes day-to-day, the how you get to that point is going to look a little bit different.” (link)
More from Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti, this time from an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show…
➤ On leveraging the College Football Playoff structure for centralized governance: "The CFP is a good place for us to start to do more. ... To use the structure of the College Football Playoff to come together, to make rules, how we manage the game, competition committees. At least start with empowering that organization because we all compete for the championship in that organization."
➤ As for the potential of Big Ten-SEC scheduling concepts: "The NFL does a really good job. The reason why you saw the [Tom] Brady [New England] Patriots and the [Peyton] Manning [Indianapolis] Colts play so often is because of where they finished in their division standings. There's something to learn from that. ... You don't necessarily have to schedule home-and-homes. You can say one year you're playing this SEC team and the next year you're on the road, but you’re going someplace different. ... Those are all great ideas that I think fans would lean into." (link)
Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua talks about financial pressures, the Protect College Sports Act, College Football Playoff expansion and more on the ND Loyal podcast. Most notably from Bevacqua…
➤ The risk of maintaining a 12-team College Football Playoff: "If it stays at 12 teams, there's going to be a limited finite number of programs that can continue to make the College Football Playoff year after year. ... My fear is that universities will make the decision that you know what, it's just not worth it anymore. ... The unintended consequence of that is a super league. I think if we don't expand it in eight, 10 years, you're going to get 24 or so teams that just split off from the rest of college football."
➤ The inevitable decline of conference championship games: "If Alabama hadn't made the CFP, I don't think you would have ever played an SEC championship game again. ... I think that conference championship games ultimately are going to run out of steam anyway."
➤ Pursuing the SoFi jersey patch to fund all 26 varsity programs without private equity: "We do not want to do a deal with private equity like some schools have done. That is not something Notre Dame wants to do. ... We want to have 26 – 13 men, 13 women's – programs remain healthy. ... Let's not bury our head in the sand, wake up two years from now and say, you know what, we need to do a patch deal. And all of the great patch deals are quite frankly spoken for." (link)
Texas AD Chris Del Conte agrees with Notre Dame boss Pete Bevacqua on College Football Playoff expansion in a conversation with Sports Illustrated’s Zion Trammel: “I want to play Ohio State. I want to play Michigan. I want to play Notre Dame. But I don't want it to be a detriment to the program. What the nation wants is big games, but if the playoff does not expand, you don't want to be punished. The playoffs have to expand.” (link)

Indiana HC Curt Cignetti leads the pack as the highest-paid coach in college football heading into the 2026 campaign after agreeing to an eight-year, $105.6M contract extension that carries a $13.2M AAV, following the Hoosiers' national championship run. Per Sportico’s Kurt Badenhausen, Cignetti's February deal, triggered by a contract clause that mandated an adjustment if IU reached the College Football Playoff semifinals, placed him ahead of Georgia's Kirby Smart ($13M) and LSU's Lane Kiffin ($13M) in a rapidly escalating market where seven FBS coaches now earn at least $12M annually. Other notables: Ohio State (Ryan Day, $12.5M), Alabama (Kalen DeBoer, $12.5M), Notre Dame (Marcus Freeman, $12M). (link)

The ACC Network’s ACC Huddle show was in Palo Alto last night for Miami (FL) at Stanford, will be in Berkeley today for UCLA at Cal, and Tallahassee for Monday’s tilt between Florida State and SMU. ACC Network Director of Programming Jeramy Michiaels: ”We went from covering one great game and realizing that we can also be at Cal the next day, and with the way the schedule played out, Florida State and SMU as a conference game on Monday night in an exclusive prime time window on ESPN. We thought it would be a great idea that hopscotching the continent for three games in four days would be the right move to kick off the season.” More on the logistics and personnel involved from Awful Announcing’s Sam Neumann. SBJ’s Irving Mejia-Hilario profiles Oregon's student-run sports marketing agency, the Oregon Accelerator, which has expanded to roughly 100 undergraduates managing creative, research, and PR for 114 Ducks student-athletes across 20 varsity sports. The agency's latest campaign features Oregon QB Dante Moore in a TV commercial for M. Jacobs Furniture scheduled to air more than 3,000 times per month during football season across the Eugene and Bend markets. A 22-person student team advised by alumni at Nike and Wieden+Kennedy coordinated storyboards, production logistics, and a custom Moore bobblehead sweepstakes for the retailer, and UO journalism professor Kelli Matthews recalls launching the initiative in 2021 as NIL regulations shifted: "A lot of the students [were] asking ‘What exactly will we be doing?’ [Business Professor] Craig [Leon] and I would just say we had no idea. We were going to build the plane as we fly it." (link)

Football drove department growth with 38.5M impressions (up 95.3%) and 24,004 new followers, while men’s basketball impressions more than doubled to 15.7M. Additionally, women’s basketball reached 2.9M impressions, and official athletics website KSUOwls.com logged 3.34M page views (up 16.4%), bolstered by a March postseason peak of 785,780 views. ➤ Despite former North Carolina Football GM Michael Lombardi’s contract containing a buyout clause for voluntary termination, such as resigning by choice, he won’t have to pay the university for leaving before the expiration of his contract. The university, likewise, doesn’t owe Lombardi any additional money, according to WRAL News. (link)
➤ Former Virginia Men’s Lacrosse HC Lars Tiffany’s breach of contract lawsuit against the Cavaliers can move forward after “Albemarle County Circuit Court Judge Cheryl Higgins denied two motions Friday by UVA attorneys to dismiss the case, saying that an offer from the school amounted to an extension of Tiffany’s existing contract. Higgins noted that the offer from UVA included all the ‘important economic terms,’ including salary and length of the deal. She also pointed out that, in 2021, Tiffany and the university agreed to an offer for a new deal in April, but did not formally sign that pact until December. … In an important note, Higgins also indicated that discussions between Tiffany and UVA about the possibility of adding another year to the extension did not negate the existing offer.” Tiffany filed a contract action civil lawsuit against the school on June 22. He is asking for just over $1.4M and requested a jury trial. (link)
➤ Former Boston University Men’s Tennis HC Dejan Stankovic and AC Jesse Frieder were deemed to have committed ethical conduct violations during the 2024 campaign by arranging for an ineligible student-athlete, who had worked as a student manager and lacked NCAA Eligibility Center clearance, to fraudulently compete under the names of other eligible student-athletes across three competition dates. Resolved through summary disposition and negotiated resolution, the Committee on Infractions imposed Level II-aggravated penalties on Stankovic, who admitted to instructing players to provide false or misleading information before recanting, and Level II-standard penalties on Frieder. Although BU self-imposed a $25K fine, a vacation of records and a one-year ban on student managers for the 2025-26 academic year, the school unsuccessfully contested a mandatory probationary period, which the panel set at one year to highlight the necessity of formal oversight to match the severity of the institutional violations. Stankovic agreed to a two-year specific show-cause order that included a suspension from 30% of one season, while Frieder accepted a one-year show-cause order with a suspension from 10% of one season.
