TCU AD on the CALS Report about capping AD pay to mirror student-athlete compensation limits

D1.dossiers... are ready for Air Force, Cal State Bakersfield, Campbell, Duquesne, Incarnate Word, Iowa State, Louisiana, Radford, Rice, Rider, South Carolina State, UAB, Western Illinois and Western Michigan. Coming soon: Detroit Mercy, Florida State, Jackson State, Michigan and Sam Houston State. Just $349 for an entire year of access to all dossiers. (link)

USA Today’s John Brice went behind-the-scenes with Boise State’s Jeramiah Dickey during the Broncos’ football victory over South Dakota earlier in the month, shadowing Dickey through a gameday routine full of fan interactions, media duties and team support. It’s a day that began with a live appearance on ESPN's College GameDay, “discussing the only thing in Idaho that rivals potatoes and skiing in popularity: Boise State's famous blue turf.” Three months shy of completing his sixth full year in charge, Dickey oversees a department fresh off $42M in FY26 fundraising, marking the program's fifth consecutive year securing $20M or more in donations. Broncos Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs Chris Kutz: “He fights, fights for Boise State and speaks out for Boise State. I think that resonates with 98% of the people." The results are tangible with the Lyle Smith Society now boasting 350 members, up from fewer than 50, and season-ticket football sales of 22K, the most since 2013. One place Dickey loves to be is on the gameday sidelines around the student-athletes: “This, being down here around the guys, this fills my bucket. Especially in the climate and environment we’re in.” (link)

Meanwhile, Boise State President Dr. David Hahn announced the university is issuing a Request for Proposals to hire a development advisor to evaluate a large-scale redevelopment project on the east side of Albertsons Stadium. Spearheaded initially by Broncos AD Jeramiah Dickey and guided by campus COO Annie Hightower, the project aims to generate sustainable non-traditional revenue streams for Boise State Athletics and the broader institution by exploring potential uses including hotel, conference, event, retail, dining, housing, and parking spaces. Hahn: "College athletics is changing rapidly. Universities across the country are pursuing large-scale developments to generate new resources and remain competitive in uncharted waters. Boise State is no exception. What distinguishes our approach is its broader ambition: This east campus project is intended to support Athletics and strengthen the entire university. … This is the kind of Out of the Blue Thinking that has long defined Boise State. The status quo is not acceptable. We are committed to realizing our potential as one of America's best universities. " (link)

New Old Dominion AD Tim House brings a blue-collar administrative approach forged during his youth working at his family’s Raleigh Italian restaurant, Casa Carbone Ristorante. House developed his leadership style watching his father, Michael, step in to bus tables when service got busy. Operating in a Norfolk market without a major professional sports franchise or Power Four institution within a two-hour drive, House plans to leverage his fundraising background and the region's large military population to expand the Monarchs' brand while drawing inspiration from former NC State Basketball HC Jim Valvano: "The leadership lessons I lean on the most are what I learned watching him run our family business. ... [Valvano] had a definition of faith: Believe something could happen that hadn’t happened before. And he lived it every single day. That’s my responsibility." (link)

In an interview with the Off the Record podcast, Indiana AD Scott Dolson talked about securing a $50M line of credit for Memorial Stadium infrastructure: "The first path is really what I would call an R&R path. Just making certain that the stadium can handle sellouts from an infrastructure standpoint. They can handle cold weather games. If we host a CFP game in December, well, the pipes freeze. And that path is what the trustees just approved. President [Pamela] Whitten asked for a line of credit of $50M to help put some money behind things that you really can't raise money for." As for the silent phase of the Memorial Stadium modernization campaign: "The other path is really the fan experience, revenue generation, modernizing the stadium just like we did when we created Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. ... We're in the silent phase of a fundraising campaign for that. … We need a couple leadership gifts to really get that off the launching pad." (link)

Northwestern is preparing to open its new $875M Ryan Field next weekend when football hosts Penn State. Sportico’s Daniel Libit caught up with Ryan Sports Development’s Pat Ryan Jr., whose current goal in managing the project is to keep everything on track both on the construction site and in the court of public opinion. To meet the deadline, the project paid union electricians 15% more and flew in 60 workers from the East Coast, while locking in steel prices in 2023 avoided tariffs that would have driven total costs up 49% to $1.3B today. Libit posits the facility will serve as a counterpoint to the prediction that the advent of student-athletes earning money would immediately redirect school and benefactor spending away from pricey athletic infrastructure toward player compensation. Ryan Jr.: “This is a little bit like AI will get rid of radiologists. And it turns out they need more radiologists.” (link)

Northwestern will debut a game day food festival featuring Michelin-star and James Beard Award-winning chefs at the opening of the new $875M Ryan Field. The permanent plaza installation, titled the "Great Chicago Food Festival," will be accessible to all ticketed fans for every football game and concert, launching with pavilions from several local culinary figures. Northwestern also announced the "Great Big Ten Grillout" to provide traditional tailgating fare along with signature dishes from around the conference. Ryan Sports Development CEO Pat Ryan Jr.: “Chicago is a city defined by its great events, and every so often a new one joins the list. The Great Chicago Food Festival is built to be one of them. What makes it different is the lineup and where it happens: the most celebrated names in the best food city in America have each created something new for us, and instead of doing it once a year downtown, we’re doing it at every game and every concert, and it’s included with every ticket." (link)

Also from Evanston: Northwestern GM Christian Sarkisian, a Wildcat alum and former Cincinnati Bengals scout hired in May 2025, oversees roster management, contract negotiations, and revenue sharing for football, men’s and women’s basketball, lacrosse, field hockey, volleyball, and softball. The Chicago Tribune’s Colleen Kane profiles Sarkisian’s running of an eight-person personnel staff that filtered 3K athletes down to 150 targets and 18 football roster additions, while leveraging partnerships with the Kellogg School of Management for analytics and bringing in former Chicago Bears executive Bill Rees to train scouts. Sarkisian: "When there’s chaos, you have to see the opportunity in it... It felt like, hey, if you have a deep understanding of how a front office should operate and how relationships between the front office and coaches should operate, and the benefits that has to the team and organization overall, you could have an upper hand in this. So it was like the stars aligned for that." (link)

Handing an incoming coach an unmanaged lump sum and expecting them to execute a seamless move on their own has become one of collegiate athletics’ costliest operational blind spots. D1.relocation is transforming how forward-thinking athletic directors handle staff turnover by converting static moving stipends into managed, white-glove onboarding experiences. Acting as your department's embedded relocation partner, D1.relocation delivers pre-decision vetting, pre-negotiated volume discounts, direct university billing, and an average savings of 16% per relocation—all with zero retainers or platform fees. By modernizing your hiring process from day one, incoming coaches hit the ground running with zero personal disruption. (link)

UAB’s AD search is expected to begin in the coming weeks, per CollegeAD, which reports the Blazers could finalize a deal with a search firm as early as next week. UAB will also put together a search committee to guide the process. (link); The D1.dossier to lead the Blazers is available to save you hours upon hours of research. (link)

TCU AD Mike Buddie talks with the CALS Report about the Horned Frogs’ approach to sharing revenue, legacy naming rights and more. Key takeaways…

➤ On dedicating revenue share exclusively to six sports: "That doesn't mean the other 16 sports that we sponsor aren't as important. It just means that's not where we're spending the great majority of our revenue share. Strategically and publicly, we have just said football, men's basketball, women's basketball, women's soccer, women's volleyball, and baseball. Those are the six sports that we're going to resource using our revenue-share dollars."

➤ Declining to sell corporate naming rights to historic facilities: "TCU was built on the backs of legendary supporters like Amon G. Carter, the Lupton family, the Schollmaier family, and our venues are named after those people. And so we can't go out and find a corporate sponsor to rename our stadium. And quite frankly, we don't want to."

➤ Capping athletic director pay to mirror athlete compensation limits: "If we are going to cap what we can spend and what they can make, then we should cap what we spend and what we make. ... I do think if one side of the equation is going to have some sort of cap, it's only fair that you examine and at least consider a cap on the other side." (link)

A structural pricing cliff hinders college sports venue monetization, with entry-level premium seats costing a median of 93% more than top standard seats across the Group of Six compared to a 19% jump in the Power Four and a 6% discount in the NFL, according to research from Playfly Sports. The report attributes the gap to thin pricing granularity, showing NFL teams average 27.6 price codes per venue versus 12.2 in college football (16.6 in P4 and 8.0 in G6). Steep entry jumps are most pronounced in mid-major conferences, led by the MAC (+158% median jump), American (+138%), and C-USA (+95%), whereas the SEC (+16%) and Big 12 (+8%) feature more gradual pricing steps. The study notes that more than half of NFL teams price entry-level premium seating at or below their best non-premium seats, creating a stairstep model that college properties have yet to replicate. Valparaiso announces that the home of Valpo Softball will be renamed Bill Steinbrecher Field to recognize the impact and legacy of AD Emeritus Dr. Bill Steinbrecher. The dedication ceremony will be held on March 27, 2027. (link)

Traditional cable bundle penetration dropped to 31% of U.S. households following a 10% decline in the second quarter to 40.1M households, according to MoffettNathanson estimates. The inclusion of virtual MVPD platforms like YouTube TV, Sling TV, Hulu, and Fubo raises total pay-TV penetration to 48% across 61.5M homes, though vMVPD subscriber growth slowed to just 68K in the quarter. The firm projects the overall pay-TV market will hit a floor of 53M total subscribers by 2030, split between 27M traditional and 26M vMVPD customers. According to Sportico’s Anthony Crupi, recent Nielsen data indicates ESPN's distribution has fallen to 53.6M homes from a peak of nearly 103M, with FS1 reaching 51.8M. MoffettNathanson analyst Craig Moffett: “We’re closer to the end of this story than the beginning. Networks are an unnecessary layer of the value chain and are unmistakably on their way out. Their brand names have some modest residual value but their original purpose—organizing content into a schedule—is entirely anachronistic today. As networks fade, the lines between streaming and linear are getting fuzzier.” (link)

Meta is entering the live sports streaming market with the launch of its $1,299.99 Meta VR Glasses, scheduled for release in Spring 2027. The 100-gram micro-OLED hardware features a partnership with ESPN to stream 8K, 180-degree "Immersive Sports" coverage—starting with college football in 2026—before expanding to more than 100 live broadcast events annually across MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports, and UFC. Powered by a Snapdragon Reality Elite processor with a three-hour battery tether, the IMAX Enhanced certified device integrates 3D media catalogs from broadcast partners like Peacock, HBO Max, Paramount+, and DIRECTV, positioning spatial hardware as a high-density delivery vector for live media rights holders. The SEC indicated it was “deeply disappointed” in LSU’s attempt to dismiss the league’s federal lawsuit against the Tigers during the ongoing negotiations to end the dispute over LSU’s previous attempt to add former NFL players to its roster. Here’s what you need to know…

➤ On Friday, Louisiana Attorney General Elizabeth Murrill, who was named a defendant in the SEC's lawsuit, filed a motion in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama to dismiss the league's complaint with prejudice and at the SEC's cost.

➤ ESPN’s Mark Schlabach: “Murrill also said in the motion that the SEC's ‘core (and odd) complaint’ -- that it suffers First Amendment harm from being forced to associate with LSU -- is ‘self-inflicted.’ ‘Any harm from continued association is not forced upon the SEC,’ Murrill wrote. ‘Indeed, as only one member of a 16-member unincorporated association, LSU has no power to force the SEC to do anything.’"

➤ The SEC’s response: “The Southeastern Conference is aware of the motion filed Friday by LSU officials and the Louisiana Attorney General seeking dismissal of the conference's federal lawsuit. We are deeply disappointed that this filing came amid efforts to reach a resolution with LSU that would address our other member universities' concerns about LSU's commitment to the conference's rules and shared governance responsibilities. Those concerns remain unresolved. The conference is preparing its response in court and will uphold the standards agreed upon by its member universities and the responsibilities of conference membership.” (link)

Detroit Mercy President Donald Taylor joined CSA Search & Consulting Senior Consultant Craig Littlepage on the company's podcast to discuss the university's ongoing AD search, institutional momentum and more. Here are some takeaways from Taylor…

➤ "This is a really important hire at a vital point in time. ... We have tremendous momentum. The city has undergone this unbelievable renaissance after the bankruptcy 15 years ago. ... Neighborhoods are thriving and the university is thriving. This is our fourth consecutive year of record, first-year enrollment. All of our professional schools are fully subscribed with wait lists. … So we're very entrepreneurial, very innovative, and it's a great opportunity within our plan to really elevate and bring athletics back.”

➤ "We're looking for someone who's visionary, who understands the intercollegiate student-athlete model, especially at a selective Catholic institution. ... I need the leader to be engaged all-in on community development, community engagement, external relations, building those necessary corporate sponsorships, fundraising, etc., because as you know, it's a different world now, right? The wild, wild west, NIL, the facilities race and everything."

➤ "I need the next athletic director to be prepared for X, Y, and Z and not just come in, ‘I got one thing’ and then well, what happens if that doesn't work?... Proactive. They’ve got to be proactive.” (link)

CollegeAD reports that Campbell has compiled a pool of AD candidates with the interview process expected to get started in the coming days. CSA Search & Consulting is assisting the Camels. (link)

More from Buies Creek as Campbell's next AD inherits a department that moved from the Big South to the CAA in 2023, a Fighting Camel Club donor base anchored by gifts like the Barker and Lane families' combined $4M commitment to football and the John W. Pope Foundation's $4.5M gift to the Convocation Center, and a concluded $105.7M "Campbell Leads" campaign. D1.dossiers has the full intelligence report, including leadership, compensation benchmarking, donor networks, and more. (link)

UConn AD David Benedict joined The Rob Dibble Show to discuss football ticket sales, the athletic department's approach to the NIL and revenue-sharing landscape and more. Key notes…

➤ Football ticket sales and crowd expectations for regional matchups: "The trend lines look good on the ticket sales [for the Syracuse game on October 3]. We've sold more tickets already than we had [for] Maryland [on September 12]. Look, this team deserves support. … I would like to see Hartford and the state community really support this program. It's no longer, you can't say, ‘well, hey, if you start winning, we'll come out and support you.’ We've demonstrated that we've been winning, competitive and exciting to watch.”

➤ National television exposure aiding NIL and corporate brand value: "When national brands and corporations are watching and they're seeing our teams play on national television all the time, I think that plays into it. ... Our men and women are consistently in games that are the most watched games of the year. Those certainly don't hurt us. And for our brand and for opportunities in rev share and NIL, in this day and age, I think it makes an impact. I think there was a reason why last year during the NCAA Tournament that UConn men's and women's basketball players were featured on more national commercial runs during the tournament than any other university or athlete."

➤ Managing athletic department expenses against high-budget competitors: "We’re looking to continue to grow the support [from fans and donors]. At this point in time, until costs start reducing, we're going to have to continue to find ways to generate more revenue and continue to support programs that want to compete nationally." (link)

Mississippi State AD Zac Selmon is aware of the scuttlebutt surrounding Bulldogs quarterback Kamario Taylor and speculation he could exit Starkville for a big NIL deal somewhere else should his star continue to rise. Selmon: “I’m never surprised by the craziness that goes on. We’re going to be as competitive as we need to be.” Per On3’s Andy Staples, Taylor had the opportunity to go to more traditionally successful football programs twice in the last two years and each time selected Mississippi State. As the nephew of former MSU QB Omarr Conner, he grew up loving the program, pledging to change its fortunes after committing in 2023. That doesn’t mean Taylor is giving the Bulldogs a hometown discount. Selmon understands the market is competitive and that if Taylor keeps progressing, Mississippi State will have to rise to the occasion. “Sometimes the outside world is like, ‘Why would they stay?’ Our mindset is why wouldn’t they stay if we put the ingredients around them?” (link)

Southeastern Louisiana AD Jay Artigues and Coaching to the Standard podcast host Dan Canevari discuss NIL’s impact on FCS, upcoming facility investment, how the athletic department is driving university enrollment and more. Main thoughts from Artigues…

➤ Upgrading his football program's infrastructure: "Football right now, we're going to open it up probably around November, December. It's a $28M complex with state-of-the-art athletic training, football locker rooms and meeting rooms. ... We're going to go from probably the bottom of our league in facilities to the top of our league in facilities in football."

➤ Combating NIL disadvantages through program culture: "We had a kid named Caleb Proctor two years ago in football who turned down over $400K to stay with us making almost zero because of the culture that Frank [Scelfo] built in football. ... We may not keep him three or four years anymore, but if we keep that one extra year because of what we're able to build, then that's what we do. Just embrace it."

➤ The widening talent gap between the FCS and FBS levels: "We used to get [players] from Oregon and from Arkansas. That doesn't happen anymore because now you could transfer FBS to FBS and be eligible where before you couldn't. So now that gap's gotten so big … because of NIL, because of the transfer rules. ... It's almost like you have the Super Leagues and then you have the Group of Six and then you have the FCS." (link)

UNC Asheville AD Janet Cone highlights the addition of a new sponsor for her ongoing social media trend where she performs push-ups to support and celebrate Bulldog student-athletes. “Our teams are competing this week in volleyball and men’s and women’s soccer and you know what that means, we could have 90 push-ups this weekend from AD Cone. Got some better news, too. Thanks to the Wells Fargo advisory group of Aiken Meyer Whatley, we now have a sponsor, $5 for every push-up. Each of those dollars will be donated to our scholarship fund, so can’t thank them enough for becoming the official sponsor of the AD Cone challenge. … Lots of push-ups and lots of scholarship dollars equal a winning combination.” (link)

Georgia Southern has introduced the TRUE BLUEprint, a strategic operating framework spanning September 2026 through Spring 2031. The plan outlines specific performance metrics, including securing 10 or more team or individual conference championships annually, achieving top-five league finishes across all programs, maintaining a 990+ departmental APR average, and placing 80% of student-athletes in careers or graduate school within a year of eligibility. Progress will be tracked from a 2026 baseline using a status indicator system reported annually. Additionally, the department launched the Eagle Victory Plan, featuring five specific funding avenues through the Georgia Southern Athletic Foundation—including capital projects, competitive excellence, and sport-specific funds—to support revenue sharing and NIL structures. (link)

Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders now appears in EA Sports College Football for the first time. The Athletic's David Ubben notes Coach Prime’s addition leaves North Carolina HC Bill Belichick, Miami (FL) HC Mario Cristobal, and Iowa HC Kirk Ferentz among the few remaining holdouts. Sanders over the summer said of his participation: "I don’t know about the video games. I have a wonderful team that handles a lot of business for me. If I’m not in the game, that means they weren’t paying enough. It probably didn’t fit where we’re going right now. That’s probably it. It was probably just that simplistic." (link)

Highlighting the critical role of the trenches in modern college football, Collegiate Sports Connect has released a new Coach Intel report benchmarking guaranteed compensation for Division I offensive line coaches. The data reveals a massive financial commitment to the position within the Power 4, where the median salary hits $600K and top-tier coaches command coordinator-level pay, with the overall 75th percentile reaching $775K. Within the autonomous leagues, the SEC sets a dominant market pace with a staggering $775K median—significantly outpacing the Big Ten ($650K), ACC ($545,900), and Big 12 ($437,500). Outside the Power 4, the financial drop-off remains steep, as Group of 6 programs operate at a median of $175,004, followed by the FCS baseline of $79,056. Athletic departments can utilize the full database to review individual contracts, evaluate peer benchmarks, and structure competitive compensation packages to secure elite leadership up front. Former Texas Tech Women’s Volleyball HC Tony Graystone was terminated for cause back on September 13, according to a university termination letter obtained by the Daily Torredor's Austin Jackson. Per Volleyball on SI’s Abbie Harris, no official reason for the dismissal had been provided at the time of Graystone’s departure. Under the terms of his contract, the school isn’t obligated to pay a buyout or the remainder of his $190K base salary for 2026. He would have been owed a 90% payout if terminated without cause. Hired back in 2016, Graystone compiled a 156-179 record across 11 seasons with the Red Raiders, including an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2021. TTU AD Kirby Hocutt named AHC Alisa Blair as the Interim HC for the remainder of the 2026 season. (link)
